Bank of America's "Museums on Us" program will be returning for a 14th season this year, allowing B of A and Merrill Lynch debit and credit cardholders free admission for themselves (after presenting their card) to 150 arts and cultural institutions around the United States. The promotion kicks off the weekend of February 5, and is effective on the first full weekend of every month in 2011.
With so many museums, zoos, aquariums, gardens, and other institutions participating this year, AOL Travel has rounded up our top 10 Can't-Miss choices. From the Met to the MIM, here are some wonderful places to explore free of charge on the first weekend of the month - as long as you have the right plastic to grant you free entry.

1. Metropolitan Museum of Art - New York, NY

The Met is one of the most popular tourist attractions in New York (with more than 5 million visitors annually), and ranks among the top museums in the world. This museum has something for everyone - including the largest collection of impressionist art outside of Paris, collections from ancient Egypt and Greece, as well as permanent installations featuring some of history's most prolific artists. They aren't joking when they say you could spend days exploring all the art in the Metropolitan Museum, so plan accordingly.
http://www.metmuseum.org/

2. Shedd Aquarium - Chicago, IL

Positioned right alongside Lake Michigan, the John G. Shedd Aquarium houses nearly 22,000 aquatic animals. Exhibits like Amazon Rising, two different saltwater reef exhibits and the Oceanarium marine mammal pavilion (featuring whales and dolphins) make the Shedd Aquarium a must-see.
http://www.sheddaquarium.org/

3. The Musical Instrument Museum - Phoenix, AZ

The Musical Instrument Museum just opened in the spring of 2010, making it the newest museum in the Phoenix area. What makes MIM part of our Can't-Miss list is its special focus on musical traditions from around the world (the collection houses instruments from over 200 different countries). In addition to the collection, there is also a theater with live performances and an Experience Gallery, which allows visitors to touch and play exotic instruments.
http://www.themim.org/

4. The Living Desert - Palm Springs, CA

This 1,800 acre zoo and botanical garden aims to preserve, protect and educate about the natural desert environments of North America and Africa. Guests are able to walk or take shuttles between exhibits, which feature animals ranging from coyotes to badgers to giraffes.
http://livingdesert.org/

5. Museum of Fine Arts - Boston, MA

First opened in 1876, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston houses more than 450,000 works of art. One million visitors each year explore the collections, which normally costs $20 for adults - great savings if you can take advantage of Museums on Us.
http://www.mfa.org/

6. Liberty Science Center - Jersey City, NJ

Liberty Science Center is one of the leading educational centers on the East Coast. Visitors of all ages are encouraged to interact with their wide range of exhibits (like the famous Touch Tunnel and Our Hudson Home), Live Science programs and IMAX theater programming.
http://www.lsc.org/

7. Museum of Contemporary Art, Miami - Miami, FL

Located in North Miami, MOCA is among the leaders of modern art museums in the United States. Their robust permanent collection of contemporary artists (like Dennis Oppenheim and Jose Bedia) is augmented by frequent lectures, performances and other events.
http://www.mocanomi.org/

8. Bronx Zoo - New York, NY

The largest urban zoo in the US is another Can't-Miss highlight of the Museums on Us program. Normally $16 for adult admission, Bank of America and Merrill Lynch cardholders will get free admission on the first full weekend of each month, and a chance to see 4,000 animals, including giraffes, gorillas and sea lions. The Bronx Zoo is also renowned for its Madagascar and Tiger Mountain exhibits.
http://www.bronxzoo.com/

9. Lan Su Chinese Garden - Portland, OR

Portland prides itself on the Lan Su gardens, the most authentic Chinese garden outside of China itself. Lan Su provides visitors a serene perspective into Chinese culture, history and Ming-dynasty architecture. Hundreds of native Chinese plants, a scenic pond with bridges, and a teahouse round out the experience.
http://www.lansugarden.org/

10. Country Music Hall of Fame - Nashville, TN

You'll find all things Country in this piano-shaped building, from Jimmie Rodgers' guitar to a sprawling exhibit on the Hank Williams family. The Country Music Hall of Fame and museum seeks to catalogue and honor the tradition of folk and country music that began in the American south. If you're lucky, you might even catch a live performance on the weekend that you stop in for a visit.

	Safe Places in Portland

1. Lair Hill

Just south of downtown, Lair Hill is tucked between the I-5 freeway and bustling Barbur Boulevard. Even surrounded by this much traffic, it manages to be Portland's quietest neighborhood in terms of crime. According to the Portland Police Bureau's neighborhood crime statistics, Lair Hill claims the distinction of being the only neighborhood in the city where no crimes were reported in the past year. If you find you've wandered southward from downtown, don't worry. Just stop by the Lair Hill Market Cafe for a panini and a glass of wine, and you'll find that you enjoy your time in this neighborhood that tops our list of Portland safe areas.

2. Healy Heights

It's unlikely that you'd find yourself accidentally walking into Healy Heights, because it's located about 1000 feet high in the steep West Hills. Healy Heights boasts Council Crest Park, which offers stunning views of Mount Hood. Only four crimes were reported to police last year in this hilltop neighborhood, making it one of Portland's safe places to live and visit.
3. All of the Portland Metro Area

Forbes Magazine rated Portland as the third safest city in the country behind Minneapolis and Milwaukee. Forbes used four criteria and the chance of natural disasters is the one factor that puts Portland third. Portland is flanked by an active volcano to the east (Mount Hood) and a major fault line to the west. Even with the possibility of natural disasters on either side, Forbes rated Portland high because it has the lowest crime rate among the cities in their survey. Portland safe areas also include Beaverton and Vancouver, WA.

4. Northwest Heights

Tucked behind 70 miles of trails in Portland's Forest Park, you're more likely to see deer or coyotes here than criminals. Along the slope of this neighborhood, massive houses overlook the urban areas, and it's hard to believe you're still within city limits. While a few crimes were reported in the past year, the majority were "thefts from a vehicle" according to police statistics.

5. Ardenwald

While Ardenwald is on a par with Northwest Heights for the total number of crimes committed in the past year, more serious crimes occurred here, including one car theft. That fact alone doesn't necessarily make this one of the more dangerous places in Portland. The only safe area on our list from the east side of the Willamette River, Ardenwald also boasts the most urban environment. This makes it a great choice for those who want that big city feel without the big city crime.

Areas to Avoid in Portland

1. Gateway Transit Center, Hazelwood

If you find yourself at the Gateway Transit Center you might want to catch the next train out. Hazelwood had the most murders and rapes last year of any neighborhood in Portland, according to the Portland Police Bureau's neighborhood crime statistics. It fared slightly better (second in the city) in lesser crimes like prostitution, but there were over 1800 crimes reported in the neighborhood last year, and a major concentration of them were centered around this commuter stop. These statistics make it one of Portland's most dangerous places.

2. West Burnside Street, Downtown

You can head downtown to shop at Nordstrom, spend a night at The Nines Hotel, or gaze at paintings at the Portland Art Museum. What you'll find just beside the culture is scary. Data places this area at the top of the highest crime rate figures in the city. Of more than 4800 downtown crimes reported in the last year, most involved disorderly conduct and liquor or drugs. The crime cloud hovers around West Burnside Street, the northern border of this neighborhood, known for homeless shelters and seedy bars. To ensure you stay in Portland safe areas, stick to the southern half of this divided neighborhood.

3. Old Town

If you're headed north, once you've crossed West Burnside you'll find yourself in Old Town. Old Town just can't seem to get out of the shadow of its past. Just below the street are tunnels some say were used to "shanghai" unsuspecting drunks into service on ships in the late 1800s. While you're not likely to be pressed into service aboard the Portland Spirit, you may have to side-step many homeless people sprawled on the sidewalk, in addition to avoiding drug addicts. Many visitors report being asked for money in not-so-polite ways. The city is actively trying to turn Old Town into a destination for nightlife and upscale lofts and even the old Merchant Hotel, now Old Town Pizza, is said to have an upscale clientele.

4. Eastport Plaza, Lents

Eastport Plaza, home to Portland's only Wal-Mart and a military recruiting office, is Lents' busiest corner of crime. Yes, you can get your blue jeans and milk inexpensively here, but you're also likely to be robbed. With over 2,800 crimes reported in Lents in the last year, this bastion of low cost goods had more than its fair share. There were no murders in Lents in the past year, but there were three counts of reported rape. Of the many crimes committed, most were larcenies with a good dose of disorderly conduct and threats against others. This shopping destination certainly does its best to be listed as one of the areas to avoid in Portland.

5. The Sellwood Bridge

This bridge is barely wide enough to allow two cars to pass in opposite directions, has no shoulders and offers a narrow footpath on one side only. That doesn't stop Portland's devoted cyclists from squeezing in as well. If watching cars and cyclists battle for road space doesn't tie your stomach in knots, just remind yourself that this bridge might be near collapse.

When it was originally built in 1925, the Sellwood Bridge was shorted funding because the Burnside Bridge, which was being built at the same time, went over budget. According to the Sellwood Bridge Project, the group was tasked with finding a solution for replacing the decrepit bridge, which means every possible corner was cut during construction. Today the bridge scores around two out of 100 possible points in the federal bridge sufficiency scale. Portland is called "Bridge City" for good reason, but this bridge is not a great example of bridge building at its finest. If you're worried about structural safety, this is one of the areas to avoid in Portland.

Portland, Ore. is where I was born and raised. It is a playground for the environmentally friendly and the ecologically conscious. It is also a place full of daring activities. In Portland, we aren't afraid to swim in our raging rivers and climb our perilous mountains. Because I have experienced one after another adventure activity in Portland and its outlying regions, I can say with confidence that there are things here you have never seen or done before. So if you're a first-timer excitedly planning Portland travel adventures, here are a few to add to your list. I dare you to try them all!

1. Voodoo Doughnuts is a Portland original. This is the only place where you can find a bacon doughnut, and your baker's dozen comes in a bucket, not a box (boxes are available for those who can't handle change). There are various locations, but the original is located downtown just off the Burnside Bridge. Look for the red door, and prepare your stomach for the first of many Portland travel adventures.

Voodoo Doughnuts, 22 SW Third Ave, Portland, OR 97204; 503-241-4704; all stores open 24 hours, 7 days a week; Cash only, ATMs available

2. If you've ever heard of a runner's high, you may have heard of the Hood to Coast Relay. This might be one of the most daring activities you'll find in Portland. Every year our crazy and overly athletic locals grab their bikes, don their running shoes, climb Mt. Hood to Timberline Lodge and then relay a whopping 197 miles to the city of Seaside located on the Oregon coast. Registration must be made early, but anyone can join a team or make a team of their own. I dare you to make it 197 miles!

Hood to Coast Relay, 5319 SW Westgate Dr #262, Portland, OR 97221; 503-292-4626; Team cost $1320
3. Paintballing is a hugely popular adventure activity in Portland. With so much open forest throughout the region, the possibilities are nearly endless - you can go anywhere there is state-owned public land. For the inexperienced, or those who don't have their own equipment, there are quite a few fields where you can rent guns for the day. Paintball Island in Canby, OR, just south of Portland, offers a great experience for the novice. They offer private parties for groups of 20 or more, anyone over 12 can play, and they have professional referees for all of their games.

Paintball Island, Pat's Acre, 6255 Arndt Rd SW, Canby, OR 97002; 503-309-9900; Sat-Sun 9:45AM-2PM; Reservations required

4. Portland International Raceway, also called PDX, offers visitors the opportunity to get behind the wheel, another of the more daring activities you'll find in Portland. There are Les Swab late night drags as well as pro driving classes. In these intense classes, professional instructors will take you out on the track and teach you how to drive in extreme conditions. Look out - they might even yank the e-break on you while you're going 50 mph, just to see how you handle the spin.

Portland International Raceway, West Delta Park, 1940 N Victory Blvd, Portland, OR 97217; 503-823-7223; Times and prices vary

5. Conclude your Portland travel adventures with an attempt at dragon boat racing. This sport is a rather recent development in Portland, but it has a fierce following. The heavily physical form of rowing takes you back to Viking days, where a drummer beat to the rhythm of your rowing to keep the team on track. The Double Fifth will give you the opportunity to try your hand at this almost extreme sport. They will set you up with the equipment you need, and even connect you with a team.

Double Fifth Dragon Racing, 13023 NE Hwy 99, Ste 7, Box 234, Vancouver, WA 98686; 877-872-3211, 971-222-3679; Rates depend on services; Times vary

To find another adventure activity in Portland that you've never experienced, simply walk down the street! There is something new to try wherever you go, as long as you can bring yourself to take that first step. I hope these ideas provide a great start to your daring Portland vacation.

Portland, Ore. is a city of diverse and interesting people, great culture, and magnificent outdoor adventure opportunities. But before you visit, it's wise to brush up on Portland slang, even if you're only asking for directions.

1. "Pod"

If the word "pod" makes you think of "Invasion of the Body Snatchers," you'll have to rewire your brain for your trip to Oregon. In Portland slang, a pod is all about food, and not just any food. We're talking "street food."

A pod is any one of several collections of food carts that can be found all over town, usually located in a parking lot or along a city block. They dish out some of the best food in the city. In fact, a few of Portland's up-and-coming restaurateurs got their start selling food through a small sliding window.

Whether you want crepes, Thai, Mexican, vegan or baked goods, you can find it at a food cart. Some of the pods even have shaded seating areas, which makes them a true dining destination. Eating at a pod solves one of those perennial food dilemmas you have when you go out with a friend - what kind of food to eat. At a pod, you can both eat happily.
2. "Couch St."

The pronunciation of this street shouldn't be tricky, but it is. Saying it like a piece of furniture that you sit on instantly marks you as someone from out of town.

In Portland local lingo, this street name is pronounced "KOOCH." The street is named after John Heard Couch, a sea captain who was one of the founders of Portland. He plotted his land into streets and named each street that ran east to west with a letter of the alphabet in alphabetical order. When the streets were renamed, they kept their alphabetic order and C Street was named after Couch. The whole area is known as the "Alphabet District."

3. "Glisan St."

Perhaps it's only fitting that there should be an issue with the pronunciation of this street in Portland's local language as well, since the man it's named after, Rodney Glisan, married one of the daughters of John Couch, who is responsible for the tricky pronunciation of Couch St.

Glisan, an Army physician, was also one of Portland's founders. When you see the name, your first instinct is probably to say it so that it sounds like "glisten." That is actually the correct pronunciation of the name. However, Portlanders refer to it as "GLEE-san" St. So, in this example of Portland lingo, right is definitely wrong.

4. "Freddie's"

A commonly heard Portland phrase is "I got it at Freddie's." No, it's not a salon or a super trendy spot for shopping. It's the affectionate Portland slang term for Fred Meyer, a local grocery store empire founded in the early 1900s, which now has stores all over the state. "Freddie's" offers one-stop shopping and is the place to go when your shopping list includes disparate items such spark plugs, underwear, orange juice and a duvet cover. If you stay in Portland longer than a few days, you will likely find yourself uttering, "I need to go to Freddie's."

5. "The Gorge"

Also known as "Portland's backyard," "the Gorge" is the Columbia River Gorge. It's a canyon cut by the Columbia River as it winds its way toward the Pacific Ocean, marking the border between Oregon and Washington State. The Gorge is federally protected as a National Scenic Area, and its western end is just minutes from Portland.

What can you do in the Gorge? It might be better to ask if there's anything you can't do. It includes a major recreation area where you can hike, bike, mountain bike, cross-country ski, ride horses, white water raft, windsurf and go kiting. The town of Hood River, OR, just an hour from Portland, is often referred to as the "windsurfing capital of the world." If you don't like working up a sweat, the scenery in the Gorge is spectacular with old-growth forests and waterfalls such as Multnomah Falls, which is the second highest year-round waterfall in the United States.

6. "The MAX"

Portland is very proud of its public transportation network. In fact, this is a place where taking public transportation or commuting by bicycle is considered a badge of honor. "The MAX," Portland slang for Metropolitan Area Express, is a light rail system that connects downtown Portland with many of Portland's suburbs, as well as the airport.

7. "The Sunset"

While the sunset in Portland can be very beautiful with the sun sinking behind the city's West Hills and the Willamette River, in local language "the Sunset" is the nickname for the section of U.S. Route 26 that runs from the Oregon coastal town of Seaside to the I-405 interchange in downtown Portland. Traffic backs up often on the Sunset because it's the easiest route to the Nike and Intel campuses, which are major regional employers. Since the Sunset runs from east to west, it's possible to drive on it into the sunset.

8. "The Schnitz"

While this may sound like some odd Germanic slicing device, it's actually the Portland slang name for the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall on Broadway.

In the early 1980s, Howard and Arlene Schnitzer donated funds to help restore the Paramount Theater, as it was then known, and the building across the street, which would become the Portland Center for the Performing Arts. Today, "the Schnitz" hosts all genres of entertainment, from music to dance and lectures by famous authors.

9. "The 'Couv"

The Interstate Bridge where I-5 crosses the Columbia River and separates Portland from Vancouver, Washington is known in Portland lingo as "the 'Couv." Because the city is so close to Portland, many people who work in the Portland area live in and around Vancouver, WA.

Portlanders generally consider their city to be much more sophisticated, and there are important differences between the two, mainly concerning taxes. For example, the state of Washington has no personal income tax, while Oregon has a relatively high income tax. Washington has a sales tax, but Oregon doesn't. There are many people who, after having crunched the tax numbers, decide to live in one city and work in the other.

Note: If you drive across the 'Couv and need to fill up your car, remember that in Washington, you have to pump your own gas, but in Oregon, there's no such thing as self-serve.

10. The "Wil-LAM-et"

There are two rivers that flow through Portland. While the pronunciation of the Columbia River is straightforward, people tend to sink a bit when it comes to the Willamette River, which flows through the city and is spanned by beautiful bridges.

Most outsiders tend to pronounce it with the emphasis on the first syllable; however, the actual way to say it in Portland lingo is "Wil-LAM-et." It's worth learning to do this as a proper Portlander because there are many businesses, parks and public buildings that get their names from the river.
The hunter-green foliage of Portland tells of the six months each year when the city is covered by misting rain. While beautiful during the rainy months of November through April, Portland and its people come alive beginning May. The coming of the sun brings a feast for the eyes, ears and nose just in time for summer vacation.

Live in the sun while it's here! Grab your camera and capture the beauty and innate quirkiness of Portland before the rain comes back.

We've pulled together some photo opportunities in Portland while the sun's out, or even when it's dimming a bit in the evening.

1. The Romantic Photo: International Rose Test Garden

Take a whiff of Portland's most romantic spot even before you see it. The heady fragrance of roses envelopes you once you step off TriMet bus 63 or get out of the car at the International Rose Test Garden on SW Kingston Drive.

Portland Travel Guide

Best Portland Restaurants

Best Portland Nightlife

The sweet scent draws you up to the low stone wall that separates the garden from the parking lot and the nearby tennis courts. Once at the wall, you overlook four and a half acres of roses in every hue from white to reds so deep they're almost black. Cluster roses (floribunda), long stemmed roses (grandiflora) climbing roses, wild roses and hybrid tea roses bloom from mid-May through October.

Couples walk hand in hand through more than 10,000 rose plants. Be kind. You're sure to stumble upon their hushed murmurs from a hidden bench or alcove.

Perhaps the most well known of these alcoves is in the Gold Medal Garden on the second level. Follow the right most walkway down and you discover an east facing gazebo that fronts a fountain. Countless brides and grooms have been photographed in this very gazebo surrounded by gold medal winning roses spanning back to 1919.

Founded in 1917, Portland's International Rose Test Garden is the oldest continually running test garden in the United States.

2. The Quirky Photo: Paul Bunyan Statue

Now, if you're looking for a bit of the weirder side of Portland, may we suggest you travel to the Kenton neighborhood via car or the Max yellow line. Shops line both sides of North Interstate Avenue as you pull up to the North Denver Avenue intersection. There on the left stands a 31-foot tall Paul Bunyan statue. A lumberjack in Portland? Sure, why not. We were founded by pioneers and timber was one of the top industries well into the 1980s.

Probably the quirkiest thing about good old Paul is not his height. It's his location. He sits in front of a Wells Fargo drive through. Parents, be aware that Paul has faced the Dancin' Bare adult club since 1990. Paul was there first, though. He was erected in 1959 and was named to the national historical registry in 2009.

3. The Family Fun Photo: Council Crest

You've had those days. You just need to beat on the kids (and they feel the same way). So you gather the lot of them and pile the swords and other fighting toys into the car. Head up a winding tree-lined road in southwest Portland and you are at Council Crest.

This is the summit of Portland at 1,073 feet above sea level. The grand feature of the park is its view. On cloudless days, you can see Mount Saint Helens and Mount Adams in Washington and Mount Hood in Oregon. But probably its best family feature is the large echo chamber at its peak. When standing in the center of the open-air chamber a whisper will reverberate in your ears.

The chamber is surrounded by a low wall and makes a great setting for a knock-out battle between family members. Be the fun with swords, pong or dart guns, frisbees or just playing tag, the 43-acre park definitely fits the bill. Oh, you can also bring along Fido for some fun in the off-leash dog area.

Best of all, Council Crest includes a history lesson. It is thought to have originally been a gathering place for Native American tribes. This is a photo opportunity in Portland you might not want to miss.

4. The Scenic Photo: Portland Aerial Tram

Everywhere you turn in Portland you can capture a great picture of downtown or one of the three mountains in view on cloudless days. But, the newest, and perhaps most fun way to get a great shot of downtown is via the Portland Aerial Tram. You board the tram at its base on Southwest Whitaker.

Running at 22 mph, it's a scant three minutes to the top. It's a calm ride with views of the Willamette River, Mount Hood and downtown. Be warned, the trip takes new riders by surprise as it passes through the mid-way tower. Tram operators are kind enough let you know about the "swing." Let's just say that glass windows and up to 178 feet off the ground make for a shaky moment or two. Completely safe, but shaky.

You disembark at the Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU). A quick walk inside takes you to a terrace and sculpture garden over looking the city. Please be kind, though. This is a hospital and patients and their families may be present.

The aerial tram opened in 2007 and connects the South Waterfront with OHSU on Marquam Hill. It saves 93,000 gallons of gas each year. It costs just $4 to board the tram for a round trip up the hill. Or, get on with your TriMet monthly or annual pass.

5. The Classic Photo: Pittock Mansion

If you're looking for the iconic Portland picture, travel up to Pittock Mansion in Washington Park.

The chirping of birds will guide you around the lush gardens and manicured lawns, the home of Portland pioneers, Henry and Georgiana Pittock, has been a museum since 1965. There is a fee of $8 for adults, $7 for seniors and $5 for youths to enter the house, but all visitors are welcome to stroll in the gardens free of charge.

You may recall the location from movies such as "Body of Evidence" in 1993 and "The Haunting of Sarah Hardy" in 1989.
Because of its extensive public transit system, exciting local scene and emphasis on outdoor activities, Portland, Oregon is a decidedly family-friendly city. Families looking to strike a balance between keeping the kids entertained and providing the adults with a taste of Portland's history and culture will find plenty of things to do to keep everyone happy during a tour of the south waterfront area. Spend a day on the rails, in the air and on the water.
Here is our suggested itinerary for planning one of the best family vacations in Portland with kids.

Morning

Kick off your family vacation in Portland by fueling up with a kid-approved, sugar-filled breakfast at the original Voodoo Doughnut location (22 SW 3rd Ave., 503-241-4704). A Portland mainstay, Voodoo Doughnut is known for eccentric flavors like maple bacon and Tangfastic. Choose one of their cereal-topped doughnuts and pretend you're feeding your family a balanced morning meal. Starting at 95 cents per doughnut, Voodoo is a bit on the pricey side (for doughnuts) and only accepts cash. They are open 24 hours, seven days a week.

Portland Travel Guide

Best Portland Restaurants

Best Portland Nightlife

Take advantage of the sugar rush by walking to the Tri-Met MAX station at the corner of SW 5th Street and Oak Street. Purchase and validate an all-day riding pass at the self-service ticket vending machine. Passes are $4.75 for adults and are valid for all city buses, commuter rails, and streetcars. Children under 7 ride free when accompanied by a paying adult.

Board the green line to City Center/Portland State University. Get off at the PSU stop and transfer to the streetcar at 5th and Montgomery. Then, take the streetcar to Southwest Moody and Gibbs, where you will find the station for Portland's aerial tram ($4 round-trip, free for children under 6). The tram travels 22 miles per hour and climbs approximately 500 feet, so children can enjoy great views of Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Hood and the Willamette River from the window. The tram operates Mon-Fri 5:30AM-9:30PM, Sat 9AM-5PM, Sun 1PM-5PM. Hours are subject to change, so please check before you visit.

Insider Tip: The tram has limited seating, so before riding, you may want to warn your kids that they will be standing. The tram does allow strollers and backpacks.

The ride is short -- just three minutes each way. At the top, you'll find observation balconies and area maps, so parents viewing Portland with kids can help them identify the city's bridges and mountain ranges. Extend the fun by visiting some of the attractions at the top of Marquam Hill, such as the sculpture garden on Kohler Pavilion's seventh floor.

After descending the hill on the aerial tram, take bus No. 35 from the Tram Tower Station to 6th and Washington. From the bus stop, walk south on 6th Avenue a short distance to reach Pioneer Courthouse Square, where lunch awaits your hungry brood.

Afternoon

Exploring Portland with kids is best done on a full stomach. Eat like a local by grabbing a bite from one of the food carts in Pioneer Courthouse Square. The number of gourmet food carts has exploded in Portland in recent years, with more than 400 currently in operation throughout the city. Some of the best have been written up in the New York Times, Sunset Magazine and Bon Appetit Magazine.

You won't find any gourmet carts at Pioneer Square, but you will find plenty of options for children. Honkin' Huge Burritos has only one menu item, so there are minimal decisions -- just cheese, beans, rice, guacamole, tomatoes, and lettuce rolled in a flour tortilla for $4.50. Philly's on the Phly and Jean's Hot Dogs in the Square offer additional kid-friendly meal choices.

Insider tip: The food carts are only open on weekdays at lunch time, and cash is the easiest form of payment.

Grab a seat on the steps of Pioneer Courthouse Square next to the fountain and enjoy a little people-watching while you eat. After lunch, explore the myriad of things to do in the square. If you arrive by noon, you will be able to see the famous Weather Machine in action. With accompanying musical fanfare, the Weather Machine displays one of three pictures representing the day's weather: a sun on clear days, a blue heron on cloudy days, and a dragon on stormy days. Children will also enjoy the echo chamber and the waterfall fountain. Older kids will have fun searching for some of the celebrity-named bricks in the square. (Parents can pick up a map at the visitor information center before challenging kids to find Sherlock Holmes and Elvis Presley bricks). During the summer, catch Noon Tunes, a free concert series held every Tuesday and Thursday.

After the kids have thoroughly explored the square, take a quick walk east on Morrison Street until you reach Tom McCall Waterfront Park. The park is a must-see on your Portland family vacation, and kids will want to pet the bronze beavers, ducks and sea lions (all native to Oregon) lounging on the sidewalk next to the courthouse. The Animals in Pools fountain was installed in 1986 and the "duck sitting in a spa" is a favorite of my children.

If you're in need of a break, spread out on the lawn once you reach the Eastside Esplanade. While you rest, you may be lucky enough to see the Hawthorne Bridge in action. The drawbridge, which is the oldest bridge in Portland and one of the oldest vertical-lift bridges still operating in the United States, is raised and lowered to allow safe passage to large ships, cars, cyclists and pedestrians. The park is open 5AM-midnight.

Next on your Portland family vacation itinerary is the Oregon Maritime Museum (Southwest Naito Parkway at Pine Street, 503-224-7724). Housed in a steam-powered tugboat, the museum features model ships and maritime memorabilia. The "Children's Corner" has a lot of nautical equipment that kids can touch and play with -- even a boat whistle to blow. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for children ages 6-17 and free for children under 6.

Insider tip: The museum has limited hours: 11AM - 4PM Wed - Sat, 12:30PM - 4:30PM Sun.

Evening

Head south through Waterfront Park until you reach the Salmon Street Springs fountain. This fountain, with a water display that varies from bubbling to misting to full spray, is a popular place for kids to frolic on warm days and is the perfect way to end a summer day in Portland. After the water dance, catch the MAX back to your hotel or stop in one of the nearby restaurants for a well-deserved sit-down dinner for the perfect end to your family vacation in Portland with kids.
Trying to find the best happy hour in Portland is like trying to name the best star in the sky. There are hundreds of contenders and no clear winner. Portland is a drinker's paradise, and the city knows a thing or two about good eating as well. The best happy hour specials feature great drink prices as well as deals on delicious noshes. A handful of elite Oregon microbreweries foster excellent competition not only in the Portland beer scene but also in the crafting of complementary foods that create the ideal happy hour. State laws are friendly toward the drinking crowd as well -- in Portland, you'll find late night happy hours in addition to the standard pre-dinnertime specials, and even a few lunchtime happy hours. It's always 5 o'clock somewhere in Portland!
The Bagdad, an old-fashioned pub and theater located in southeast Portland on Hawthorne, is part of the McMenamins empire. All of the McMenamins properties are uniquely wonderful: the company makes a habit of buying historic buildings such as schools, churches and theaters, and converting them into restaurants, entertainment venues, hotels and more. The menu is more or less the same at any McMenamins location, so you can't go wrong. I love the Bagdad for its location and its cheap second-run theater. Catch a $2 movie on a Tuesday evening, then hang out in the pub after the flick to take advantage of the late night happy hour specials. McMenamins is a popular microbrewery, and their Ruby Ale -- a light, crisp, raspberry-flavored beer -- is a Portland favorite. Happy hour food specials include $1 to $3 snacks and $4 to $5 burgers. Don't miss the Cajun tater tots!

Happy Hour: 5PM-6:30PM weekdays

Located on Northwest Broadway, the Gilt Club is an artsy, sexy happy hour destination for Portland residents. The Mediterranean-inspired fare highlights ingredients grown in and around Portland, and the happy hour menu features items from $1-$5. The setting is upscale and lounge-inspired, and the food and drinks are as artful as the decor. Try the $2 scrambled eggs and toast from the happy hour menu -- slow cooked eggs with creme fraiche, chives and brioche toast fingers -- or go for the $5 stewed pork shoulder with telaggio and red onion on foccacia. Wash it down with Gilt's Moscow Mule, a vodka cocktail with ginger beer, lime, fresh ginger zest and a spritz of soda, served in a traditional copper cup.

Happy Hour: Monday - Friday 3PM-6PM; Monday - Thursday 9:30PM-close; Saturday 1PM-4PM; Friday and Saturday 10PM-close; Sunday 3PM-close

Only a 30-second walk from Powell's City of Books in southwest Portland, you'll find the classy seafood restaurant, Jake's Grill, owned by McCormick and Schmick's. While the restaurant is a white linen kind of place (complete with white linen prices!), you can take advantage of some of the top happy hour specials in Portland at their laid-back bar area or sit on the 10th Avenue sidewalk for some people watching while you enjoy an afternoon cocktail. The items on the happy hour menu are great for sharing, and you'll want to try one of everything. At $1.95 to $4.95 per item, you can order several items without worrying too much about the effect on your wallet. If you're really hungry, the $2.95 half-pound cheeseburger is the best happy hour deal in Portland, and it's served with Tillamook cheddar cheese -- you cannot visit this city without sampling Tillamook cheese. At Jake's late night happy hour, try the $4 white wine sangria.

Shanghai Tunnel

Happy Hour: 5PM-7PM daily

Discovery Channel junkies might recognize this favorite Old Town Portland dive bar. Shanghai Tunnel gets its name from the tunnels that run below the bar and through other parts of downtown Portland to the Willamette River. Legend has it that visitors to the bar would be drugged, whisked away through the tunnels, and sold into slavery in the East. Historians agree that this legend is probably not true, but it gives the place character. The dark and dirty atmosphere inside the bar contributes to the spooky feel, but after a couple of Shanghai's cheap drinks, you'll be relaxed and comfortable. The staff is friendly and fun, the food (especially the noodle bowls) is delicious and cheap, and the history -- true or not -- is fascinating. The $1.50 Rainier is a big hit at this local bar, and it's one of the best happy hour specials in Portland.

RingSide Steakhouse

838 SW Park Avenue
Portland, OR 97205
503-223-1513

Happy Hour: 3PM-6PM and 9:30PM-close daily

RingSide Steakhouse is quite possibly the top steakhouse in Portland, and its happy hour menu is shockingly inexpensive -- offering some of the best happy hour food specials in all of Portland. The $2.25 steak bites are the talk of the town, but don't stop there -- try the potato skins loaded with bacon, cheddar and sour cream, the prawn satay, chili-lime crabcakes and the pulled pork sliders. All of these options are $3.50 or less on RingSide's happy hour menu. This famous Portland steakhouse is renowned for its wine list, offering 60 wines by the glass and over 700 labels by the bottle. The knowledgeable staff will happily help you select the perfect wine to complement your meal. This may be the swankiest happy hour in Portland.

No matter where you are in the Portland area, there are a lot of outstanding happy hour choices within stumbling distance. Since most establishments offer late night happy hours in addition to the afternoon specials, you are guaranteed to find a great spot to either kick off or wind down from an evening on the town.

Portland, Oregon, is a fun city for a holiday with tweens. It's here that two major rivers meet, and Voodoo Doughnuts were born. Community is very important and, as you will find, we take our individuality very seriously. The weather in Portland is mild and often rainy, so plan your day accordingly. The warmest, driest months are July and August with November through January typically the wettest, so summer is usually the best time to come to Portland with tweens.

Morning

The morning is best started with a good breakfast. There are large chains like Shari's, Elmer's and IHOP, if you prefer something familiar. Smaller, family-owned restaurants are also found all over. Of these, I would suggest Nite Hawk on North Interstate Ave. in North Portland (6423 North Interstate Ave., Portland, OR 97217; 503-285-7177). The dining room is small but the omelets are fresh and come with a wide variety of ingredients.

There are two places you could kick start your day in Portland with tweens. The first option is the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (1945 SE Water Ave. Portland, Oregon 97214; 503-797-4624). The exhibits offer a little something for everyone, with hands-on activities in physical science, life science, earth science, technology, and astronomy. There is also an IMAX theater, a planetarium and the opportunity to go aboard the USS Blueback submarine. The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday (except on Thanksgiving and Christmas) from 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. during the summer and from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. after September 7, 2010.

Another option is to head to the Washington Park area, where there are a number of attractions in close vicinity (making for less driving time between them). The Oregon Zoo (4001 SW Canyon Road Portland, OR 97221; 503-226-1561 ext. 0), is one of the main attractions in Washington Park. Its parking lot is small so get there early -- or take the Max Light Rail Service. The zoo has exhibits from around the world along with hands-on activities and specific information about each animal. Seasonally, there are concerts in the evenings. Also, there is a large field and many grassy areas on the zoo's grounds in case you'd like to stop for a picnic lunch. The zoo is open from 8 a.m to 6 p.m. and admission for adults and children 12 and up is $10.50 and $7.50 for children 3 to 11. If your tweens are more into art than animals, next to the zoo is the Portland Children's Museum (4015 SW Canyon Road 97221; 503-223-6500). The museum is open daily from 9 a.m to 5 p.m. but closed from September 7 to 13, 2010. Admission is $8 for adults and children; free for babies up to age one.

Afternoon

If you're staying in Washington Park, now is a good time to head over to the Japanese Garden (611 Southwest Kingston Avenue Portland, OR 97205 503-223-1321). There are guided tours included with the admission fee ($9.50 for adults; $6.75 for children between 6 to 17) and it's the perfect place to take beautiful scenic pictures. And you can't leave without seeing the International Test Rose Garden (400 SW Kingston Drive Portland, OR 97205; 503-823-7529), part of Portland's Rose Gardens. Within the International Test Garden are themed sections, such as the Shakespeare Garden, the Miniature Rose Garden, Royal Rosarian Garden and the Queen's Walk. Admission is free and the garden is open daily from 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.

A great place to go in downtown Portland with tweens is Powell's Books (1005 West Burnside St., Portland, OR 97209; 503-228-4651). Powell's is an institution in Portland -- a new and used book store that takes up a whole city block and has books of every genre, including rare and valuable ones. There is a great pizza place called Rocco's Pizza (949 SW Oak Portland, OR 97209; 503-223-9835) right across the street.

Evening

The nightlife scene in Portland is mostly pub related, which isn't particularly tween friendly. But the Lloyd Center (201 Lloyd Center Portland, OR 97232; 503-282-2511) in the North Portland Lloyd district, offers plenty of activities for families with tweens, with a food court, movie theaters, stores -- and an ice rink. A great end to your perfect day in Portland with tweens.

When the mercury is rising and mosquitoes start using you as their own personal buffet bar, it's time to take a breather in a cooler destination. If you still want to be in the heart of the action there's a slew of fantastic cities in the States with an incredible number of activities crammed onto their summer schedules, but where temperatures won't have you running for shade. In these seaside escapes, lakeshore gems and mountain settlements, you can give your entire attention to the vacation without having to keep a constant eye on the UV index. So forget about battling the crowds and the temperature and read on for the coolest U.S. cities to escape the heat this summer.

Portland, Oregon
Oregon's outdoorsy largest city really picks up its paces when summer arrives. Local produce is showcased at the metro area's 32 farmers' markets, and festivities brighten the calendar from the Portland Rose Festival to the boisterous Oregon Brewers Festival. The waters round the city come to life in the mild weather -- Scappoose Bay, just north of Sauvie Island, is a perfect place for kayaking, the Clackamas River is known for its whitewater rafting, and windsurfers skim the Columbia River. If your visit coincides with a rain day, seek out the elegant Portland Art Museum or admire the 350 velvet "artworks" of the kitsch Velveteria. With average July and August temperature barely creeping above 80 degrees and only around an inch of Oregon's infamous rain falling each summer month, it's an idyllic time to visit The Rose City.

Missoula, Montana
Summer is divine in this western Montana college town of 70,000. With school out til fall, Missoula's alternative coffeehouses, bistros, and bars are pleasantly free of crowds. On Wednesday lunchtimes, head to the arts festival at Caras Park, where you can also sample dishes from the city's best restaurants. Time your visit to coincide with August's River City Roots Festival or Symphony in the Park. There's a scintillating selection of activities nearby -- from exploring spooky ghost towns to hiking or biking the Lolo National Forest and Rattlesnake National Recreation Area. The Blackfoot and Bitterroot rivers are perfect for tubing on warm August days, but Missoula's average summer highs only hit the low to mid-80s and nights are cool.

Portland, Maine
Perched on the hem of dramatic Casco Bay, Maine's largest city is compact and easily explored. Plus points include an excellent art museum, a smorgasbord of enticing restaurants, such as Fore Street, and brew pubs like Gritty McDuff's -- the first brewpub in Maine since Prohibition when it opened in 1988 -- and eclectic vintage and book stores in the lively Arts District. Ferries beetle back and forth from Portland's working waterfront to a cluster of bay islands. Back on the mainland, lighthouses and beaches dot the coastline just outside town, and great hiking spots beckon. Portland -- the perfect New England summer destination -- saw average high temperatures in 2009 hit just 74 degrees in July and 79 degrees in August.

San Francisco, California
San Francisco is the ultimate urban summer playground with a plethora of parks where you can throw a Frisbee, some incredible hikes to the headlands, and Mount Tamalpais across the Golden Gate Bridge, as well as plenty of summer celebrations to keep things interesting. Experienced surfers looking to catch some curls during their California vacation should check out Ocean Beach in Golden Gate National Recreation Area, known for its powerful swells. It's the city's longest stretch of sand, ideal for strolls or huddling round a fire pit come nightfall. San Francisco tops the list of US's 40 cities with the lowest daily mean temperatures for June, July and August at just 61.4 degrees. The city's famed fog is prevalent in summer, billowing over the Marin Headlands in a picturesque manner and usually burning off by afternoon.

Denver, Colorado
There's an abundance of neighborhood celebrations, music festivals, and arts events all summer long in the Mile High City. And summer in Denver is the ideal time and place to grab a cold one -- Colorado's largest city has no fewer than three beer festivals on its summer schedule. Free outdoor movies play in the parks and Botanic Gardens, and with 16 outdoor pools, there are plenty of places to splash around. Denver makes the list of top ten US cities with the lowest average temperatures for June, July and August, at just 70.9 degrees (it's a dry heat, there's none of that nasty humidity here.) The accessible mountains -- covered in wildflowers come summer -- offer a further drop in temperature, but if you stay in the city, Water World has 25 wet and wild rides and attractions that will cool you off in no time.

Anchorage, Alaska
If you dream of long summer days -- really long summer days -- head to Alaska. The land of the midnight sun basks in 24 hours of daylight at the summer solstice in June. The state capital, Anchorage, is a city of 227,000-42 percent of the state's population. It sits on the Cook Inlet and offers a vibrant downtown, rich native culture and access to incredible wilderness. It's the perfect base for exploring kayak the inlet; view elk, bear and whale; hike the nearby Portage Glacier-before heading back to town to one of the fine restaurants like The Marx Bros. Cafe, a fun brewpub such as The Glacier Brewhouse, or one of the many quirky clubs like Cyrano's Off Center Playhouse. And don't forget the shopping (the state has no sales tax). Average highs are a mere 65 degrees in Anchorage in July. Low humidity and temperatures that rarely eke beyond the mid-70s make this the perfect city to chill out in.

Honolulu, Hawaii
Honolulu offers a whole host of things to do, from joining the hordes on Waikiki Beach to cooling off at outdoor bars and laid back restaurants. But you don't have to spend all your time outside, the city also has a contemporary art museum with works by the likes of Andy Warhol and Frank Stella. Don't miss the summer concert series at Waikiki Aquarium or the many music festivals on the calendar. A drive round Oahu island is a great daytrip -- discover the surfing beaches along the North Shore, tiny towns, and delicious offerings from the shrimp shacks on the way. Average high temperatures don't change much on Oahu -- going from around 80 degrees in January to 88 in August, but it feels cooler thanks to the lovely Pacific breezes. Not only does Honolulu make our list of cool cities -- it's also on the American Lung Association's list of the top ten U.S. cities with the cleanest air, so you can breathe easy when you're there.

Asheville, North Carolina
Cooling breezes sweep down over bohemian Asheville from the Blue Ridge Mountains, keeping the days balmy and summer nights deliciously warm rather than uncomfortably hot. Home to thriving theater, literary and restaurant scenes, this is the perfect temperate destination for culture vultures. Architecturally rich, many of this arty destination's coffee shops, stores, galleries and restaurants roost in art deco, beaux-arts, and neoclassical gems downtown. The mountains offer prime shady spots for picnics and cool hiking trails. Events include Bele Chere, one of the Southeast's largest street festivals, and a kaleidoscopic array of arts festivals. Perched at an altitude of 2,134 feet, things keep pretty cool around here, and mean summer temperatures hover in the 70s.

Traverse City, Michigan
Traverse City -- 120 miles from the Mackinac Bridge, 242 miles from Detroit -- is a city of 15,000 with a wonderful wealth of activities. Beaches line the nearby shores of Lake Michigan, the Sleeping Bear Dunes sit 30 miles west of town, and the Village at Grand Traverse Commons is a beautifully preserved series of historic buildings in 480 acres including shops, biking and hiking trails. Traverse City's National Cherry Festival kicks off in early July with an air show from the U.S. Navy's Blue Angels -- just one of 150 mostly free events. The peninsula is the perfect destination for foodies, renowned for its wine and ice wine (made from grapes frozen on the vine) and there are fantastic wineries, butchers, bakers, cheese makers and brewers to visit. Lake Michigan cools the towns and cities nearby and Traverse City, on Grand Traverse Bay, has an average summer high of 80 degrees through July and August.

Cleveland, Ohio
Cleveland has a celebratory air in summer with a slew of events -- including Irish, German, Puerto Rican, and Italian Festivals; the arts and technology Ingenuity Festival; and the beer-centric Burning River Fest -- all crammed into the calendar. Add to that visits to the Botanical Garden, the Museum of Art, the Great Lakes Science Center, the Zoo and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and you'll have a packed summer itinerary. Northeast Ohio has plenty of excellent beaches, too. Pack the cooler and head for the water's edge at Edgewater Park right in the city -- you'll join swimmers, sunbathers, boaters and dog walkers on the 900-foot-wide swathe of sand. One of the top five coolest summer cities in the U.S., Cleveland enjoys an average temperature of just 69.9 degrees.
It's been a busy season at this Wildlife Conservation Society park, where you can see tots of all sizes-from sea lions to big cats-this spring and summer. Now on exhibit in the Congo Gorilla Forest area is a colorful and chatty baby Wolf's Guenon monkey that was born in December 2009 to parents Jordan and Gigi. Also be sure to check out the colony of teeny Kihansi Spray Toads that debuted in February. The reptile was almost made extinct when a recent dam was built in Tanzania, but thankfully, the colony that moved to the zoo is thriving. You may need to bring a magnifying glass-the newborn toads are smaller than the head of a Q-tip.
At 2 a.m. on Valentine's Day, the San Diego Zoo's 13-member African elephant herd announced the arrival of a newborn male calf with triumphant trumpeting that could be heard all around the park. The baby elephant isn't the only new addition: A baby Malayan tapir named Tembikai is also a part of the family at the San Diego Zoo. The adorable snouted mammal, whose name means watermelon in Malay, weighed 13 pounds at birth. Mom and baby will finally meet the public this spring.
It was a happy day on March 1 when a new baby bonobo ape entered the world (staff and volunteers kept a respectful distance but monitored the event via surveillance camera). The little tyke, the fourth child of mother Susie, is the 11th offspring since the zoo received its first bonobos in 1990. Fifteen of the country's 85 live at this zoo, which participates in the Species Survival Plan for the rare and endangered ape, which shares more than 98% of the same DNA as humans.
Andean bear cubs don't leave the den until they are three months old, so the twins born here in January will make their long-awaited public debut in May or June. Newborn cubs weigh only up to 18 ounces at birth, and are usually hairless, toothless, and blind. At four-to-six weeks of age they finally open their eyes and begin taking steps. Anxious zoo-goers awaiting the chance to sneak a peek at the adorable duo don't have to wait that long-the zoo has added a special bear web camera to record their antics.
Three rare golden-red maned wolf pups-brothers Santiago and Diego, along with sister Cayenne-were born on Christmas Eve 2009 at this Denver institution, marking the first time since 1985 that the zoo has heard the pitter-patter of little wolf pup paws. All three can now be seen frolicking in the zoo's Feline Building. Also on display is an endangered Grevy's zebra, named Lakota, that was born in November 2009. Lakota is extremely shy and is usually found close by his mother, Topaz.
All eyes are on Miri, a17-year old Bornean orangutan that is part of the zoo's colony of Indonesian orangutans (the largest such group in North America). That's because she is expecting her second baby any day now, with a projected due date sometime in March or April (the gestation period ranges from 235- to 270-days). Miri's first offspring, Satu, is five years old and was the first Bornean orangutan born at Zoo Atlanta. Experts predict that without these targeted conservation efforts this endangered species could be extinct in as little as 10 years.
A 130-pound, 5-foot-10-inch male Masai giraffe made a dramatic entry into the world in January, dropping six feet to the ground as his mother gave birth while standing up. After checking out the lanky not-so-little-one, head to the zoo's Gorilla Forest to get a glimpse of a baby girl born on February 6 to Mia Moja, a Western Lowland gorilla. According to the World Wildlife Fund, there are only 100,000 western lowland gorillas left in the wild, making them a critically endangered species. A naming contest for both giraffe and gorilla is expected soon.
A newborn red-flanked duiker is now on exhibit with his mother in the zoo's Africa Rainforest area. The tiny duiker, which does not yet have a name, is part of the antelope species and will weigh just 20 to 26 pounds at full maturity. Mother duikers protect their calves from predators by hiding them in brush piles and only bring them out to nurse, so spotting the baby will be a game for visitors.
This zoo, just minutes away from Minnesota's enormous Mall of America, is now home to a tiny female White-Cheeked Gibbon. The zoo's animal care staff is now nurturing the little one, since her mother has shown little interest since she was born. She weighed just 18 ounces at birth and is said to make sounds resembling Star Wars' R2-D2. Zookeepers organize twice-daily 30-minute family reunions in hopes that the mother, Tia, and father, Bailey, will begin to bond with their offspring. The long-armed ape, the first female born in North America since 2006, will make her public debut in the spring.
If you like a side of history with your travel, you'll get it at these inns and hotels that all have an intriguing past. Some are as tame as a former convent while others have scandalous previous lives like, say, serving as the den of iniquity for an infamous Colombian drug lord. Renovations have transformed them all into visitor-friendly places with comfortable rooms that may distract from some dubious beginnings. But you can't completely wipe away the fingerprints of criminals or the memories of a Titanic survivor. So go ahead and book a stay at these 10 hotels and be transported back to dreamy Victorian days or dark medieval nights.

There are nine narrow suites housed inside these 100-year old railway cars that went out of passenger service in 1929. Black-and-white pics of the old Yountville station cover the walls like a mini-museum dedicated to the time of 20th century railroad barons. The cars sit along actual train tracks, but fear not, the only movement you'll feel is the spinning after one two many glasses of Napa' best vintages. Rooms are narrow, but wide enough to hold a king bed as well as a private sitting area and an ample-sized bathroom. Flat-screen TVs and free Internet access provide the entertainment.

Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar, amusingly-named one of Forbes' richest men in the world in 1989, was the owner of two three-story mansions on the coast of the Yucatán Peninsula. Conscious aside, the man had taste, and this was party central for celebrities and gangsters alike who flitted around the massive property with the reckless abandon that the 80s were known for. Escobar died in 1993 and the buildings were abandoned until 1996 when nearby hotelier Melissa Perlman, of the eco-chic Amansala, began transforming it into an eight-room haven for the boho crowd. The super spacious suites with names like King Pin and King Big Daddy give a gentle nod to the past, but are now outfitted in cool, calm colors while the helipad Escobar once used for quick getaways is used for yoga sessions. And as a precautionary measure to rid the mansion of bad mojo, Perlman summoned Tibetan monk Palden Gyatso to bless the site.

Bostonians used to avoid this Beacon Hill building at all costs. That's because it was the Charles Street Jail, a lockup that held the city's most notorious criminals (Malcolm X was once a "guest"). But now it's the place to be seen since it was converted into the hottest spot for those in the know. Visitors check into one of the 298 former cells that were beautified with rose and taupe instead of dingy grey and have wrought-iron windows that let the light shine in. At night you can drink cocktails with names like Jesse James and Doing Thyme inside the brick walls of Alibi bar or order veal and ricotta sliders and striped bass at the Clink restaurant. But cute names aren't the only reference to the Liberty's beginnings. The jail's rotunda remains intact and is still lined with the catwalks formerly patrolled by officers. Unlike the past, service is top-notch. Ask for a nail file and no one will bat an eye.

Built in the Conquistador era, this 1651 building was constructed as a sanctuary for the Carmelite Sisters in Old San Juan. The convent had been a holy residence for more then two centuries when the last nun left in 1903. The building was then a dance hall and even a homeless shelter. In 1962 there was a divine intervention that turned this hideaway from the sins of mankind into a hotel where celebs like Rita Hayworth and George Hamilton fancied a stay. Today it is a luxury property with 58 rooms and a recently opened tapas bar offering small bites for those who love to eat but take their vows against gluttony very seriously.

Downtown Nashville's Union Station was considered a showpiece of Gothic Revival architecture when it opened in 1900 and drew the likes of Mae West and Al Capone to get a glimpse. The station's 65-foot vaulted lobby ceiling, Italian marble flooring, intricate Tiffany-style stained glass, and limestone fireplace are as impressive today as they were more than 100 years ago. The fifth-floor balcony offers a great view of the ornate lobby and guests can take a self-guided audio tour that details the station's history. And while the hiss of locomotives is long gone, the turn-of-the century elegance continues in the 137 rooms.

The 101-room Augustine is a regal pressence near Prague Castle in the city's historic Malá Strana district. The seven 13th century cloistered buildings were once home to monks of the St. Thomas Monastery (several practicing friars still live in a separate part of the complex). You won't find basic, spare quarters, though. Guestrooms feature accessories inspired by early 20th century Czech cubism like timber chairs. The glass-roofed restaurant is surrounded by 19th-century Baroque frescoes, but the place isn't at all puritanical. So don't feel guilty about downing a Pilsner Urquell at the cellar Brewery Bar. Once upon a time, monks fermented beer there for profit, so we're sure they'd give you their blessing today.

Originally built in 1908 as the American Seaman's Friend Society Sailors' Home and Institute, this Georgian-style building was designed with cabin-like rooms, perhaps so the sailors would feel right at home. In 1912, the building was used to shelter Titanic survivors who lived there until the end of the investigation into the ship's sinking. The YMCA bought the hotel in 1944 and in the 80s and 90s it was a doss-house for the down-and-out. Restored in 2008, the revamped hotel is still a refuge, but now for smart travelers who appreciate the $99 and under rates. The 200 rooms duplicate ships quarters-space is sparse and calling the bed a berth wouldn't be an exaggeration. But the perks are big and include flat-screen TVs, free WiFi, and iPod docking stations, making up for the Jane's only drawback-communal bathrooms.

Sleeping inside an airplane has never been as comfortable as at the Vliegtuigsuite, a modern luxury room inside a Cold War-ear East German government plane at Amsterdam's Teuge Airport. Unlike that seat in coach, there's more than enough space here for two, and it's been rehabbed into a mega-suite with a king-sized bed, sauna, and a media center with three flat-screen TVs, WiFi, and a Blu-Ray player. A hostess is at your beck and call 24-hours a day should you need a midnight snack or cocktail. The bonus: unlike today's flights, if you want to go and hang out in the cockpit, it's all yours. After all, you are the captain of this fantastic voyage.

The ornate, 16th century private residence of Pope Julius II is set in the tranquil, olive-and-wine nirvana of Tuscany. From 1503 to 1513, this grandiose pope (the same one who commissioned Michaelangelo to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel) transformed his own residence into a decadent villa with paintings by Raphael. The home passed through various family ties and today Marquis Giuseppe Ricci Paracciani and his wife Princess Eleonora Massimo have made their home a country hotel filled with tapestries, canopied beds, and antique furniture. The simple décor is authentic to its medieval Middle Ages past, but the in-house spa offers hydromassage baths and local sea-salt scrubs that are in tune with 21st century pampering sensibilities.
Add to that the "Erotica Package," and you'll be writing your own love story: the bundle features a chilled bottle of wine, a dozen red roses, strawberries and whipped cream, erotic dice, and two plush bath robes-all of which you can take home.
Top Budget Travel Destinations for 2010

Hawaii's budget took a blow last year, due largely to a lack of visitors. Tourism is Hawaii's primary source of income, with nearly three-quarters of all jobs directly impacted by tourists, and last year the state saw traveler's hesitation with shorter and fewer stays. The good news? Hotels are willing to wheel and deal just to have bodies in the beds, making Hawaii's financial woes translate into major savings for savvy travelers. Some hotels are hoping you'll extend your stay, by offering a fifth night free, while others, like Waikiki's Aqua Resorts, have rooms for as little as $60/night.

Budget carrier JetBlue announced service to Montego Bay this winter from Boston, New York, and Orlando. You can jet to the second largest city in Jamaica for as little as $119 each way if you book now for the Spring, Those looking to hit the duty free shops and tropical shores during the day and find a budget place to rest their head at night can book a room at the Caribic House for as low as $25 a night-just cross your fingers for a 3rd floor room so you can still catch a glimpse of the beach.

Last year marked the worst recession in Singapore's usually-affluent 44-year history, making the country rely more than ever on tourism. To help bolster their economy, hotels have lowered their prices, making luxury suites more in reach to those with smaller budgets. With all that money you save, you can seek out some of Singapore's best known experiences, shopping at famous destinations like Orchard Road or Marina Square. Thanks to a promotion running all year, stay at the prestigious Goodwood Park Hotel, noted as one of the best hotels in Asia, and a landmark on its own, for as little as $110/night.

With the Atlantic Ocean on the West and Irish Sea to the east, no point on Ireland is more than 30 miles from the ocean. In Dublin, tourists could spend days traipsing through the country's many museums, cathedrals, and parks, only takings breaks to eat up deliciously fresh seafood. Even better, they can do it all on the cheap: the hospitality industry is luring travelers with discounted rates and special offers, like the Ardmore Hotel, a three star hotel offering rooms for as low as $65 per night.

Last year Iceland was faced with a financial crisis, making the US exchange rate with the krona nearly three times more favorable than the year before. Travelers will be able to find meals and hotels for almost half the price they were just a few years ago, giving travelers the chance to see the Northern Lights, and the country, without having to break the bank. Stay at the Hotel Plaza, located in the heart of downtown Reykjavik, for only $50/night.

Adventurers aren't the only ones who enjoy Costa Rica's tropical beaches and dense rainforest, the Central American country is actually one of the world's most popular destinations for eco-tourists because of its biodiversity of tropical plants and animals. There are plenty of travel deals to be snagged up, too, including a deluxe room with an open-sky shower and hammock at Beijaflor Resort for just $99 a night. Those who are looking to stay in the thick of things can rent a jungle bungalow at the Hotel Kasha for just $50 per person, per night.

Sin City was hit hard last year when conventions, which fuel its economy, dropped off by 26 percent. The convention cut-backs, and empty hotel rooms that ensued, made the average nightly rate plummet to under $100. On top of all of that, the city has seen major expansions lately, with the opening of the multi-billion dollar CityCenter, and room add-ons to the Golden Nugget and Hard Rock Hotel. Fewer visitors, added to more inventory, results in big savings, and a chance to stay in a luxe room you might otherwise not be able to afford. Stay at one of the largest hotels in the world, the MGM Grand, for as little as $53/night.

The Dominican Republic Ministry of Tourism just reported that the country sustained no damage in the wake of the 7.0 magnitude earthquake on January 12th that devastated Haiti, the other country on the western side of the island of Hispaniola. All eight of the Caribbean country's airports, seaports, and resorts are open for business, and prices on airfare and hotel rooms are expected to drop in 2010-especially when peak season ends in April. A decent meal in Santo Domingo, the first European City in the New World, can easily be found for less than $8 and the Quality Hotel Real Aeuropuerto Santo Domingo has rooms between $80 and $140 per night.

The dollar is gaining momentum, making exchange rates to the Mexican peso that much more favorable. Additionally, Mexico is still recovering from the swine flu scare, and the recession, which both hurt the country's tourism. Many locations throughout the country have responded by slashing hotel rates, and including perks, like free massages and gift certificates, to lure travelers back. Airfare has even become more affordable as more and more flight itineraries include destinations in Mexico. While deals abound all over Mexico, stay sea-side, at the Emporio Acapulco, for only $85/night.

Magestic Mount Hood is the backdrop to Portland, a locale known as the most environmentally friendly city in the United States and the microbrewery capital of the world. If you've ever had an inkling to explore Portland's quirky neighborhoods or browse art galleries in the Pearl District (free the first Thursday of every month), now is the time. The city has added more than 900 downtown hotel rooms in the past three years, and budget carriers JetBlue and Southwest serve the city. Even hip Hotel Lucia-a four star establishment-has rooms available for as low as $100 a night. If you're looking for something offbeat to do for just $5, stop by the city's "Velveteria," a museum with over 2,000 velvet masterpieces, but hurry-it's closing soon.

While hauntings are controversial and nearly impossible to prove, the hotels on the following pages are all well-known for "mysterious" happenings. In this case, we've restricted our choices to benign, Casper-like ghosts. No desecrated Native American burial sites à la Poltergeist or Amityville Horror shows: We want to ensure you fall into a dead sleep and check out the right way.
Keep reading to find out which two hotels inspired Stephen King novels, where Marilyn Monroe reportedly "hangs out," and where the ghost of a small boy is said to steal golf balls.

This Hollywood landmark, which hosted the first Academy Awards presentation, opened in 1927 and immediately became a celebrity haunt, luring luminaries like Chaplin, Fairbanks, Swanson and later Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra, and Cary Grant. Since its 2005 makeover by decorator-to-the-stars Dodd Mitchell, current cavorters include Kirsten Dunst, Eva Longoria, and Prince. No surprise that spectral superstars, including Marilyn Monroe (who lived here for two years during her early modeling career), seek the spotlight. Supposedly her spirit floats around the VIP Tropicana poolside lounge; guests have also reported seeing her reflection in the full-length mirror from her original suite, which sometimes sits near the gift shop, as well as a voluptuous blonde dancing in the ballroom. Another restless resident, Montgomery Clift, occupied room 928 while filming From Here to Eternity. It's said the strains of his bungled bugling (practicing for the movie) resonate in the hallways.

This sumptuous Art Deco ocean liner sailed the Atlantic from 1936 to 1967, before being permanently berthed in Long Beach. The ship, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, has been a filming location for maritime adventures from the original Poseidon Adventure to Pearl Harbor. Sections were gutted to expand the museum and add themed restaurants, a theater, and guestrooms (recently modernized with iPod docking stations and LCD TVs). At least 50 former crew members and passengers met an untimely demise during its thousand-plus Atlantic crossings (not including possible WWII casualties while it served as a POW transport). Oddly apparitions weren't reported until after its retirement. People hear infants crying in the nursery (the original third-class playroom), while the first-class swimming pool sightings include a little girl named Jackie and women in vintage swimsuits; wet footprints and splashing sounds allegedly appear though the pool is drained. A watertight engine room door crushed engineer John Pedder during a 1966 fire drill; he supposedly still cruises the area.

Top Ten Haunted Hotels

This exclusive, yet relaxed, Adirondacks summer retreat debuted in 1883, fell into disrepair a century later, and eventually was restored to its original glory. Today is on the National Register of Historic Places and is popular among present guests and, reportedly, among "former" guests, including a mysterious lady in white who rouses sleepers with her chilly breath, a couple who argues violently through the fine-dining Trillium, and a portly walrus-mustachioed man dubbed Walter by employees who "bump" into him in the elevator. Supposedly a stately blonde in white evening dress rebuked then walked through a sous-chef at Mr. Brown's, a resort restaurant (the chef promptly resigned). Golfers also claim to see a boy in 1950s attire struck on the golf course. Legend has it that he was hit by a car while he chased golf balls for resale to the pro shop. Today he spirits away your balls and flings them from behind a tree while giggling.

Another member of Historic Hotels of America, this 1925 Federal-style, brick hostelry faces site of the infamous 17th-century witch trials (it was also the hotel that starred in the film Ghost Hunters). Some parapsychologists believe former witch victims may reside here, including the first person executed, orchard owner Bridget Bishop, who is believed to be responsible for the aroma of apples often permeates the hotel. Guests also claim a woman paces the sixth floor, pausing to pine at room 612. The front desk has also received complaints about suite 325-it seems that ghostly "strangers" use the bathroom in this room (indeed closing the door modestly) with running water, lights turning on, and flushing toilet.

A National Historic Landmark, Hotel del Coronado is best known as the hotel where the film Some Like It Hot was shot. Named "one of the top ten resorts in the world" by USA Today, The Del has hosted newsmakers from Edison, Lindbergh, and Babe Ruth to every president since LBJ. It ostensibly inspired Stephen King's novel 1408, which is based on parapsychologist Christopher Chacon's investigation of a famously haunted room, 302 (now 3327). It was in this room that lonely, lovelorn, 20-something Kate Morgan was found dead several days after checking in under an alias in1892. Kate claimed she was waiting for her brother, but it was really her reprobate estranged husband (some believe he murdered her, though the coroner's inquest ruled suicide). Hotel guests and employees have reported flickering lights and TVs, floating objects, strange sounds from footsteps to voices, sudden chill spots, and mystifying breezes. Her apparition (in black lace Victorian garb) and antics occur throughout the grounds, often at the Established 1888 gift shop.

On the National Register of Historic Places, this Victorian charmer welcomed such VIPs as Robert E. Lee, Ulysses Grant, Oscar Wilde, Dwight Eisenhower, Mae West, and Babe Ruth. The owners seem equally proud as haunted hosts to 32 ghosts. "Teddy" Roosevelt recruited several Rough Riders over drinks here in 1898 to fight in the Spanish-American War and he supposedly continues to imbibe beverages here in the cozy dark bar off the lobby. After arguing with her jealous husband, chambermaid Sallie White stayed overnight. She died two days after her husband's brutal March 28, 1876 assault; the Menger paid the $32 funeral cost. Sallie still wanders the Victorian wing halls, carrying towels but ignoring housekeeping requests. Richard King, owner of the famed King Ranch, died in his private suite here and supposedly walks through walls. Staffers report hearing heavy footsteps only to find a pair of army boots by the door: The hotel was constructed 23 years after the adjacent Alamo fell, prompting speculation that soldiers haunt the land. Interactive entities range from a buckskin-clad cowboy to a woman knitting, while utensils float around the kitchen and restaurant.

War often evokes bloody phenomena: The spirit of Gettysburg lives on in this 1797 handsome historic hostelry. At one time, the Cashtown Inn served as Confederate General A.P. Hill's headquarters and triage center for the wounded-some of whom may not have departed. The inn's brochure reproduces an 1895 photo that purportedly caught the apparition of a Confederate soldier standing on the front porch. The entity is particularly active during summer (Gettysburg raged from July 1-3), prowling the attic and halls, rapping on room 4's door, even mischievously appearing in a chair opposite the bed. Rooms contain guests' journals to note paranormal occurrences, like the door of Room 1 slamming of its own accord, mysterious scrawling on mirrors, creaking floorboards when adjacent rooms are unoccupied, even an EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomena) supposedly clearly stating, "OK," in response to the guest's comment "I am leaving this recorder on... If you would like to talk to us just speak."

When this early 20th century, neo-Italianate Renaissance classic (also on the National Register of Historic Places) was renovated in the '80s, it became the linchpin in downtown Portland's redevelopment. Sadly, it's also known for a jumper who jumped down the stairs outside of room 703-according to rumor, his spirit now haunts the rooms on the way down (though baffling phenomena occur up to room 1003). Rooms in that vertical column are particularly susceptible to supernatural doings, but 703 features the eeriest events of all-inexplicably moving objects, mysterious tapping, and cold spots. Photos taken in this room occasionally depict a dark cloud and videos contain strange shadows, distorted faces, even EVPs. Guests report that upon returning to their room, glasses are out, towels used, chairs moved---though the electronic key record indicates that no one entered. One reported hearing increasingly heavy breathing as the sheets practically mummified him. When he finally freed himself from their stranglehold, his large heavy luggage flew across the room towards him, followed by a figure running into the closet. Security demonstrated he was quite alone in the room.

Top Ten Haunted Hotels

Originally a fashionable Victorian spa, Eureka Springs is one of America's quirkiest towns. In the past, Native Americans touted its healing waters; Today this alternative, artsy destination welcomes everyone from Hell's Angel conventioneers to LGBT activists. Over the years, the Crescent has served as a college, hospital, and hotel and there are nearly as many ghosts here as there are incarnations of the property. The ghost of Norman Baker (who ran a hoax "Cancer Hospital" and health resort here during the late '30s) rambles about. The Crystal Dining Room is a hotspot for sightings of Victorian-garbed spirits. Elsewhere, a wailing woman carries her infant's blanket. A tall bearded gent knocks on doors, asking, "Are you waiting for me?" An Irish stonemason who crashed from the roof into Room 218 during construction bangs on walls and flicks the lights and television on and off. A nurse floats around the third floor. A woman in Room 419 introduces herself as a cancer patient. A waiter in old-time attire bearing a tray of butter followed teenagers closely in and out an elevator and down the hall to their room.

If you're like us, you have a need to travel. Here are ten low-budget vacation destinations that everyone can enjoy. Some are major metropolitan areas, others couldn't be less so. While price is the big factor, we also need to make sure these places have the things we like to see and do -- otherwise, what's the point of going?

The Texas capital is perched on the edge of Hill Country, so hiking and mountain biking options are plentiful (and free of charge). The art scene ranges from funky to highbrow, with a multitude of galleries and shows to see. This city is billed as the "live music capital of the world," with shows for just about any musical taste. However, no visit to Austin is complete without the show put on by the Congress Bridge bats. Nope, that isn't a band; it's over a million Mexican Free-tailed Bats that emerge from under the bridge nightly.

Top 10 Cheap Travel Destinations Across America

In Vegas, you can be fed, transported and entertained for less than you'd imagine possible. If you're on a tight budget, don't expect to get a lot of comps (freebies) from the casinos. You have to spend some to get some back. Grab every coupon book you see and watch for daily or hourly specials for food, drinks, clubs, and shows. Many food specials are off-menu, so you'll need to ask your server for it.

Top 10 Cheap Travel Destinations Across America

Inner Harbor is a must-see even if you have only a passing appreciation for boats and sailing. Here you'll be impressed by the museums and the National Aquarium. Civil War buffs can visit Fort McHenry, the birthplace of "The Star-Spangled Banner." You can also take in an Orioles game for as little as $8. Little Italy is a vibrant area full of great, cheap dining places, and if you're lucky enough to schmooze your way into a crab boil, your life will never be the same again.

Top 10 Cheap Travel Destinations Across America

Touring California Wine Country is possible even on a canned-beer budget. Tasting-room visits and winery tours are usually inexpensive and are occasionally free. Don't be discouraged by some restaurants and hotels that don't fit in with your monetary plan: Bargain food and lodging is still reasonably easy to find. Along the way, make it a point to cruise along California's Highway 1, even if it means driving out of your way -- you simply can't put a price on the coastal views.

Top 10 Cheap Travel Destinations Across America

Uptown boasts great public art displays and hosts. The Taste of Charlotte food festival each June is worth checking out, but if you're traveling in the fall, Charlotte Shout is September's month-long celebration of art and culture. You can always immerse yourself in NASCAR too. Lowes Motor Speedway, Dale Earnhardt, Inc., Hendrick Motorsports Museum, Richard Childress Racing Museum, and North Carolina Auto Racing Hall of Fame should all be on a race fan's list.

Top 10 Cheap Travel Destinations Across America

Over at the lakefront, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum is a mandatory stop. (Adult admission is $22 for a one-day ticket.) Later, wander next door to the Great Lakes Science Center and experience Robots + Us: Where Humans Meet Machines exhibition. Throughout Cleveland, we found it to be inexpensive, yet more clean and more sophisticated than we'd ever imagined.

Top 10 Cheap Travel Destinations Across America

LoDo, the historic, culturally diverse downtown area, can also be "low-dough." For about the price of a bottle of Coors Light ($4), you can head over to Coors Field to see a Colorado Rockies game. Right field reserved tickets are just $9 a piece. Getting around Denver is not a problem, because the city offers decent public transportation, including a light rail system. Denver locals tend to be outdoorsy, so you'll easily find biking, camping, hiking, and skiing outlets.

Top 10 Cheap Travel Destinations Across America

"The Birthplace of Rock and Roll," Sun Studio, asks just $8.50 for a tour. This is where the careers of Elvis, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis, and B.B. King all began. W.C. Handy Memphis Home and Museum on Beale Street is a mere $2 to visit. Graceland (Elvis' home and final resting place) mansion tours are $28 (see all the attractions for $69). On a somber but important note, make a point to visit the National Civil Rights Museum ($12), located on the site of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination.

Top 10 Cheap Travel Destinations Across America

Portland is blessed with a temperate climate and everything is close by. Feel like a trip to the mountains? Mount Hood is about an hour east of the city. Would you rather head west and check out the Pacific? That's an easy day trip too. Portland is known as the City of Roses, with a month-long rose festival each June. If you find that agreeable, you may have a hard time leaving after your visit.
