The New York State Assembly voted Wednesday afternoon on an unusual piece of legislation, a bill directing the state's parks office to allow Nik Wallenda, of the "Flying Wallendas," to tightrope walk above Niagara Falls. Death-defying, tourism-friendly acts have long been outlawed at Niagara, but a companion bill had already passed the New York Senate.

Niagara Falls: Travel beyond the waterfalls

Niagara Falls is a stunning natural attraction: a massive rush of water tumbling over wide cliffs. While the Falls are no doubt a world class attraction, it's difficult to stare at them all day. Luckily, there's plenty to keep you occupied at Niagara Falls. Three separate waterfalls make up the destination: American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, and Horsehoe Falls (the most spectacular of them, and entirely on the Canadian side).

Niagara Falls with Tweens: A Family Vacation

For years, tourists have witnessed extraordinary things at Niagara Falls: 63-year-old dance teacher Annie Taylor going over the falls in a barrel, the Great Blondin crossing on a tightrope and cooking an omelet en route, and courtesy of Ripley's Museum, "the world's rarest egg." But in my experience, nothing more rare or spectacular has happened than this: my two tween daughters telling their father that I'd taken them to "the coolest place in the world." A trip to the Niagara Falls with tweens really is worth the effort.

What follows is my secret recipe to a perfect family day in Niagara Falls with tweens, although you're welcome to come up with your own variations. Most importantly, keep them moving, keep them fed, and then, at precisely the right moment, get them soaking wet. If you're trying to find the best family vacation ideas for a trip with your tweens, I would definitely suggest taking them to Niagara Falls.

Photo Opportunities Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls is probably one of the most breathtaking places in North America. It is so marvelously beautiful that every tourist frantically takes photos, one after another, trying to capture the intensity of the vigorous cascades to share with others at home. Although I was equipped only with a Nikon Coolpix digital camera, the beauty of the falls flowed into my photos, allowing me to relive and share those moments of sheer awe through pictures.

But don't be envious; you can have an amazing experience at Niagara Falls, too! Summer is the best time to visit the falls and the best time for pictures, too. The high winds that blow around Niagara Falls can be severe in the cold months from November through March, when the average temperature is 30-36 degrees Fahrenheit (-0.9-2 degrees Celsius). From June through August, the temperature is much more agreeable at 75-81 degrees F (21-25 degrees C), which makes the cool water splashing from the falls feel very refreshing and delightful to visitors. Listed here are the 5 best photo opportunities in Niagara.
