Looking for something to do this Mother's Day? Take charge of your weekend to recharge by sinking into one of these sumptuous spa retreats.
Miraval, Arizona

Miraval, Arizona
Horses. Hammams. Happy hour. A seal of approval from Oprah Winfrey herself. If that meets your requirements for a relaxing long weekend, then Miraval is a must. The 400-acre luxury spa, a smattering of casitas in the sun-baked desert hills just outside of Tucson, offers an ideal, yin-yang balance of exercise and ease, of challenges and comfort. There are enough fitness activities to satisfy the most rabid gym rat, enough spa treatments to bliss out the super-stressed, and enough tequila, chips and guac at the nightly cocktail bar to go ahead and indulge, after all. Don't miss the outdoor Miraval relaxation massage, which combines the dry air of the Sonoran desert and the deep moisture of Clarins aromatherapy oils for reduced stress and improved circulation. The iced-cucumber water at the pool is pretty divine, too.
From mats to meals, there's a nama-stay that caters to the intentions you set with your yoga practice and travel style. Just be warned: you may find bliss in that om, and never return home.

Luxury: LuxYoga, Cote d' Azur, France
Get pampered while you deepen your practice in Cote d'Azur in the South of France at LuxYoga's 10,000 square-foot renovated farmhouse, just 25 minutes from Nice. The amenities of a boutique luxury hotel combined with the intimacy of a personal home will have you feeling like a guest-and part of the family. Rare wines, aromatherapy-treated bedrooms, open terraces and an award-winning private chef are all there to enhance your weeklong experience, reflecting the grandeur of a balanced yoga lifestyle, beyond the mat-at least for a week. Enjoy classes every morning and four-course dinners every evening. Four days are filled with yoga workshops, clinics and meditations, with a couple of down days to enjoy the area's culture through excursions and cooking classes.
Everyone has their own reasons to feel completely worn out. The holidays, children, work, and what happens on "The Bachelorette" are stresses that can really break just about anyone down. That's when you know it's time to book a week-long retreat where your greatest concern will be whether to go on another hike, take a seaside yoga class, or attend an organic cooking demonstration.
That's when you know it's time to book a week-long retreat where your greatest concern will be whether to go on another hike, take a seaside yoga class, or attend an organic cooking demonstration.

Bringing home beauty secrets of a faraway destination doesn't require an expensive wellness vacation or a plastic surgery trip. Instead, national beauty secrets can be found everywhere from the local pharmacy to the farmer's market. What should be searched out and what should be left to the locals? Check out our top hits and misses below.
SKIP IT: Boots Products from the UK
Common sight: A woman from the U.S. flies across the pond and dumps out her purse, stuffing in as many Boots products in as possible before throwing down a credit card and strolling away pleased with herself. Ladies, take note. As fantastic as Boots is, these British items are available stateside...at Target.
TAKE IT: Sure, we have Nivea products back home but they don't hold a candle to the creamy formula of the German originals, which live in thin-but-hearty tins you can safely place in your purse or pocket. Before leaving the drugstore, also stock-up on Labello, a tube of no-frills gloss that moisturizes and protects lips from the sun; it's a favorite of thrifty Euro fashionistas.

SKIP IT: Brazilian Sand
Because masses of Brazilian people look amazing sitting on the beach, the rumor came about that it must be the sand. And thus, women around around the world flocked to Ipanema, shoveling up scoops of sand in hopes of turning it into some sort of miracle serum. It's all wrong.
TAKE IT: One Brazilian product that is practically miracle-worthy is the Brazil nut, which moisturizes and keeps users looking as fresh and young as those adorable ladies in Copacabana. Ditch the sand and make room for amazing Brazil nut based items from Nunaat Cosmetics. Try the Chocolat line amplified with cocoa butter, another fave of locals.

SKIP IT: Licorice Oil from India
Thought to be the cure for everything from obesity to dry skin, India's beloved licorice oil has a major savior complex, but hasn't been FDA approved for all of these purposes, so don't try to bring it into the States.
TAKE IT: Instead, go for a smaller and more useful beauty product made from similar natural oils from Indian company Lakme.Their simple Liplove lipsticks come in shades just a few darker than natural lip tone and are packed with intense SPF protection.

SKIP IT: Moroccan Argon Oil
This mixture created from the seeds of a very rare plant grown only in Northern Africa is the real deal. It's a fantastic moisturizer, age minimizer and smells plain amazing. But even a small bottle of this miracle elixir can put a serious dent in your savings account.
TAKE IT: More wallet-friendly options come from Morocco's Kajame, which has a line of products that incorporate argon oil with other natural ingredients. The Prickly Pear Exfoliator, for example, adds ground argon shell and prickly pear seed oil for a smooth exfoliating gel. Or, the Fountain of Youth creme combines shea butter, honey and beeswax to argon oil for a deliciously soft night cream.

SKIP IT: Olive Oil in Italy
A wunderkind in the kitchen, it's long been assumed that slathering skin in the sweet stuff will result in Sophia Loren-good looks. But skin will only retain the moisture for a few hours... possibly before breaking out from all the pore clogging oil.
TAKE IT: Pick up Italian beauty product Cléo. The line, which comes in soaps, creams and bath gels, is made from all natural items like yogurt, honey, vanilla and mint and is remarkable light and creamy.
Maple syrup, caviar, Meyer lemons, agave. No, these are not the items needed for some exotic dish. For many, spa vacations are a luxury that seems out of reach. But recently, a slew of resorts have emerged that combine spa treatments like massage, wraps and facials with wellness components including acupuncture, nutritional counseling, fitness classes and even healthy cooking classes. Now, a week or weekend-long getaway can focus on whole body health rather than simply relaxation. You can even choose what type of spa vacation is right for you - do you want a resort that focuses on 6 am hikes or one that allows a glass of wine? Do you prefer a pre-set or a customized program? A getaway with friends or a total immersion in "me" time? These five U.S.-based spa vacations range from coast to coast, don't require a passport and don't have to break the bank. Choose the one that best suits your needs:

Lake Austin Spa Resort

This quintessentially "Texas" resort is nestled just outside of Austin in "Hill Country" ...meaning you're close enough to civilization to enjoy its perks, but far enough away to enjoy a true resort-style experience. Voted a top spa vacation by Conde Nast Traveler and many more, Lake Austin Spa Resort is designed to evoke a casual visit to a friend's lake house ... and with just 40 rooms, it's intimate enough that everyone will know you by name before your stay ends. Indulge in healthy spa cuisine (with many ingredients sourced from local Texas organic farms), take nature walks, enjoy a yoga class, or pamper yourself with treatments that blend the beauty and the ingredients Texas Hill Country with results-oriented products and modalities. We love that this resort feels like "home" - the Blue Room, or relaxation area, is filled with antiques and oversized rockers, and many rooms feature private porches.

Who should visit: Girlfriends or spa goers seeking a luxury spa vacation that won't break the bank.

Canyon Ranch Hotel & Spa Miami Beach
Book a hotel stay with a la carte fitness, spa and health coaching or opt to design a personalized program that focuses specifically on an area of need, be it relaxation, fitness or nutritional counseling. Unlike the properties in Tuscon or Lennox, no minimum stay is required, and alcohol is served. Choose from 40+ daily fitness classes, an entire book of spa treatments and special activities for children and teens.

Who should visit: Relaxation seekers who don't want a total immersion experience; girlfriends on a weekend getaway.
The Oaks at Ojai

Like many "old school" spa accommodations, California's famed Oaks at Ojai is focused on wellness and detox in addition to spa services. Accommodations include access to 15 optional fitness classes, three healthy spa cuisine meals, evening programs and complete use of resort facilities including the pool, saunas and hot tub.
Who should visit: True "wellness" seekers - the resort's signature is its 1,000 calorie diet (no booze!) - and anyone on a budget... the resort is known as being one of the more affordable spa vacation getaways.

But the two confirmed honeymoon resorts they chose - Soneva Fushi and Four Seasons Maldives at Landaa Giraavaru - both offer over-water bungalows, extreme privacy and hefty price tags. But it's said to be worth it to stay in there ... unless, of course, you're this unlucky couple. For true privacy, we'd opt for Soneva Fushi, which sits on its own private island.
Honeymoon Resort for Megan Fox & Brian Austin Green

Hawaii has long been a favorite honeymoon destination. Why not? Its beautiful beaches, laid-back vibe, and remote location make it the perfect escape. Transformers hottie Megan Fox and longtime love Brian Austin Green finally tied the knot this summer at the upscale Four Seasons, choosing to make it both their wedding and honeymoon resort. A special perk? Guests booking a suite (and flying out of Terminal 1, United or US Airways) will have access to a new lounge offering a wet bar, tv, drinks, snacks, reading materials, charging stations and gratis Wi-Fi. Suite guests also enjoy specially-designated staff. The bad news? Suites start at over $1,000 per night.
Viceroy Anguilla, Anguilla
Honeymoon Resort for Orlando Bloom & Miranda Kerr

Fresh from a full renovation that added two new restaurants, two pools, more rooms, better beach access and The Spa at Viceroy Anguilla, the honeymoon resort of choice for Miranda Kerr and Orlando Bloom was recently acquired by Starwood Capital (of W Hotels fame) but will remain under the same luxe level of service. Opt for poolside treatments, meditation or healthy cooking classes before getting cocktails at Bamboo Bar and Grill, overlooking the beach. If you can, stay in one of the 60 new oceanfront penthouses.

El Dorado Golf and Beach Club, Los Cabos, Mexico
Honeymoon Resort for Hilary Duff & Mike Comrie

Cabo San Lucas has long been a honeymoon resort paradise for celebrities and West Coast jetsetters alike. Duff and Comrie spent their honeymoon at the plush El Dorado Golf and Beach Club, a private resort that has boasted numerous celebrity clientele. Enjoy swimming in the pristine Sea of Cortez, spend your days indulging in world-class sport fishing, golf, or spa treatments or simply lie in the warm Mexican sun. Cabo, unlike many other Mexican cities, has not been negatively impacted by violence from drug cartels or illnesses like swine flu. Its large amount of expat residents also makes it a very friendly area for American tourists.

Hotel Guanahani, St. Barths
Honeymoon Resort for Bethenny Frankel & Jason Hoppe

Luxury seekers often flock to the French island of St. Barths for their winter getaways, and Real Housewives of New York star Bethenny Frankel and new husband Jason Hoppe are no exception. The luxe Hotel Guanahani is no exception. An ideal honeymoon resort, the hotel is a member of Leading Small Hotels of the World and overlooks the Margiot Bay. The resort's signature brightly-colored cottages are reodlent with the scent of local bougainvellia. A 2010 renovation also ensures that the guestrooms are up to their $1,000+ per night price tag.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Best All-Inclusive Resorts in Mexico

Filed under: Best Of, Luxury, Spa & Wellness

The Family Pet Resort in Newtown Square, PA promises "all the services you would expect from a five-star resort including room service, maid service, soothing music and clean & comfortable climate-controlled suites."

During the day, there are group play sessions and private play sessions with balls, Frisbees, tunnels, and agility equipment, as well as homemade peanut butter treats. At night, there is a tuck-In session with a belly rub and a bedtime story to soothe the dog, and email updates to calm the overprotective owner.

	When Boarding Your Pet:

o. Make sure your pet is current with vaccinations such as rabies, distemper, and bordatella (kennel cough); many facilities require documentation, so make sure you plan ahead.

o. Aggressive dogs may not be welcome, and some places might deny any pets that haven't been neutered.

o. Help your pet to feel at home by packing their favorite toy or blanket.

o. If your pet has digestive issues, think ahead and send along any special food they eat.

o. If your pet is on any medication, include detailed instructions on how to administer it. For example, if Fluffy will only take his pills when they're wrapped in cheese, be sure to mention it.

Cats are catered to as well, with "peaceful and private luxury condos [that] have calming music piped in to create a soothing, spa-like environment." Luxury Suites for dogs are just $29 a night, Kitty Condos are $34 a night, and also available are "Ultra Luxury Vacation Villas that include TVs and...Oversized Family Suites for families with multiple pets."

People drive for miles and miles to leave their animal companions at the Olde Towne Pet Resort in Springfield, VA. The 27,000 square-foot facility boasts 183 canine suites sized from 20 to 60 square feet and is equipped with windows and skylights, floor drains, automatic drinking water fountains, and plush dog beds. The eight-foot by seven-foot Luxury Suites have TVs, DVD players and cyber cams so you can check on Fido from wherever you are.

Grooming options range from fanciful to practical, with aromatherapy, honeysuckle-jasmine shampoo and conditioner, and hot oil treatments, as well as de-skunking and tar removal. While three walks a day are included in boarding costs ($60-$110 a night for dogs, $30-$50 for cats, depending on accommodation), there is also an a la carte menu of exercise and play options, including Cardio Jog, Pilates for Pooches, Water Workout and Lap Swim, and Iron Dog Training. For a few dollars more, your pampered pet can also have a vacation photo and ride home in a limousine.

On the scenic north shore of Lake Tahoe, DogGoneCrazy is like summer camp for dogs (and cats too). Most dogs quickly fall in with the routine of scheduled play times, nap times and optional nature hikes -- in fact, they thrive on structure. They also thrive on the fresh, healthy dog cookies made daily in the bakery. In-house baker Evelyne Sanchez can even make treats to order for dogs with special diets or food allergies. You can see how happily tired they are with pictures that are posted daily on the DogGoneCrazy website.

At Far Fetched Acres, dog trainer Colleen Safford gives pavement-weary New York City dogs a vacation in the country. She started out with a dog walking and training service in town, and after buying a country house in the beautiful Hudson Valley, it wasn't long before her clients began to tag along. Now, a newly constructed 2,000-square-foot carriage house serves as an indoor play and nap area.

Boarding at Far Fetched Acres is $65 a night with a $10 surcharge on holidays; they do offer free pick-up and delivery to Manhattan on Mondays and Thursdays. With an average of about 10 guests at a time (up to about 20 during the holiday season), each dog gets plenty of personal attention -- with no surcharge for cuddling.
Las Ventanas

Talking about some of the pampering services offered for dogs, Safford chuckles. "Some things really cater more to humans -- skip the blueberry facial. Luxury from a dog's point of view is having enough space to run around and lots of things to sniff."

The long list of regulars at Far Fetched Acres means that dogs get to know each other,so when they arrive they're immediately among old friends -- the best way to spend a vacation.

For some pet owners, the perfect vacation is one where they can bring their best friends along. According to the Travel Industry Association (TIA), over 29 million U.S. adults have traveled with a pet in the last three years. Paris Hilton and her pals may have opened the door for tote-bag-sized dogs, but now a growing number of top resorts are welcoming pets of all sizes.

You might even run into a celebutante or two at Las Ventanas al Paraiso in Los Cabos, at the tip of Mexico's Baja Peninsula, where the Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific Ocean. While this Five-Diamond retreat is eminently drive-able from Southern California, many Hollywood-types like their dogs to travel in the comfort of their private jets, which can land at San Jose del Cabo International Airport, only 20 minutes away.

Some of Las Ventanas' 71 suites offer private pools, rooftop terraces, and even Spa Suites with private treatment rooms; all feature butler service, spacious living areas, wood-burning fireplaces and splendid views of the sea, golf course, or sand and desert gardens. To accommodate its four-legged visitors, Las Ventanas has designed a portable Pet Cabana, which can be set in the suite or brought to the pool or beach for shade.

Las Ventanas is known for its excellent seafood, cooked over a wood fire at the Sea Grill, but there's hardly any need for a doggy bag, as the "Canine Delights" menu offers everything from the Rin Tin Tin (braised beef short ribs with farro risotto and gravy) to a"Ruff" con Pollo (chicken breast with rice and tomato). On the "Feline Delights" menu: the Claw Cleaner (albacore tuna, chopped egg and sour cream), Kitty Captain's Plate (scrambled eggs and poached salmon), and Tomcat's Favorite (a selection of seafood).

For animals on special diets or who simply crave a particular food, the chef will prepare made-to-order dishes. All pet entrees are regally served in metal bowls encrusted with faux gemstones, with bone-shaped placemats for dogs and kitty-design placemats for cats.

Perhaps the greatest luxury: You can sleep as late as you want, as resort staff will walk your pet at any time, either along the fine sand beach or in the flowering desert countryside. Summer rates of $500 a night apply through September, and there is a $50 flat fee for each pet (not per night).

Topnotch Resort and Spa in Stowe, Vermont has equal appeal for people and pooches. Set on 120 verdant acres, Topnotch rates four diamonds from AAA and has won awards for its skiing, tennis and spa. Topnotch has 68 guest rooms and suites as well as 40 luxurious one- to three- bedroom homes. As is the case at most pet-friendly properties, pets are welcome in select guest rooms and suites. Topnotch makes puppies feel at home with Pet Welcome Baskets stuffed with organic doggie treats from Robbie Dawg, bottled water and a special keepsake water bowl. Your pet will also have his own special "Aero Paws" inflatable dog bed by AeroBeds, wrapped in a soft fleece cover. Hiking in Vermont's Green Mountains is an activity best enjoyed with your faithful companion, but afterward a visit to the 35,000 square-foot Spa at Topnotch might appeal. Your little friend can also unwind with an in-room Rover Reiki massage treatment ($60 for 25 minutes). A Deluxe Double room starts at $195 a night (up to $395 in October leaf season).
Nemacolin Wooflands, Nemacolin Woodlands Resort

Set on 2,000 acres in Southwestern Pennsylvania, Nemacolin Woodlands Resort offers an array of vacation possibilities for you and your pet. Six lodging options for people include the AAA Five-Diamond Falling Rock and the Maggie Valley RV Park, as well as townhouses and luxury homes. Pets under 30 pounds can stay in your room ($150 per stay), and larger animals can be boarded at Nemacolin Wooflands, the full-service grooming, training and amusement center right on the property.

This unique arrangement allows everyone to fully enjoy everything a vacation at Nemacolin has to offer: golf, spa, fishing, horseback riding, as well as a full slate of winter sports -- including dog sledding. Meanwhile, dogs and cats can opt for the a la carte services offered at Nemacolin Wooflands including swimming, nature hikes, ball play, movie night (with popcorn) or the ice cream social.

Overnight rates start at $309 for people, $15 for cats (with discounts for multiple cats), and $27 for dogs up to 30 pounds. Luxury Suites are available for dogs at $50 a night, and for people at $699 a night.

For the pet-friendliest destination in the country, Miami rivals Los Angeles, with a wealth of four- and five-star hotels that welcome furry guests, including Sofitel Miami, the Fontainebleau Resort, Loews Miami Beach, The Tides Hotel, Four Seasons Miami, Ritz-Carlton South Beach, the Mandarin Oriental Miami and the EPIC Hotel.

Like many pet-friendly hotels, Mandarin Oriental Miami welcomes animals under 25 pounds. To help keep your pet petite, the hotel chef prepares meals that are fortified with the protein, vitamins and minerals that pets need and do not contain any added sugar, artificial flavors or color. Tail-Waggin' Turkey ($9.99) blends tender ground turkey, brown rice, creamy yogurt, carrots, peas, beans, crushed tomatoes, organic flax seed, olive oil and sea salt.

The little nippers need exercise to stay svelte, so the Mandarin Oriental offers a Doggie Boot Camp with a certified dog trainer -- either a simple Play Date ($70 for every 45 minutes) or a more intense Training Date ($90 an hour). Rates at the Mandarin Oriental start at $249 a night and go up (way up) from there.

The 54-story, elliptical-shaped high-rise EPIC Hotel, like all Kimpton Hotels, accepts any number of pets (including birds) without size or weight restrictions for no extra charge. Many Kimpton Hotels even have a resident Director of Pet Relations (canine variety) for pet-less travelers to socialize with. When you see bowls of food and water placed in the lobby, you know that pets truly are welcome.

The HosPETality Program offers cozy beds, bowls, leashes, plastic bags and VIP (Very Important Pet) amenities to all registered pets. Pet-sitting, walking, grooming, and massage can be arranged through the concierge. Rates start at $229 a night.

A dog's life at any of these places is pretty dog-gone good.
With school and work schedules on overdrive as Summer shifts into Fall, it's easy to forget about the need to take a break. But don't head into winter without an escape plan in place--before you know it the holidays will be here and you'll be feeling the stress in body and mind. Carve out time between now and February for some healing R&R. After all, research shows that relaxation has some pretty significant health benefits, including improving immune function and lowering blood pressure.

To help you on your journey, we've rounded up some of the best places to unwind in America. Some of these restful oases, like Manoa Falls, HI made our list because of the sheer natural beauty of the destination, others, like Mii Amo Spa, because they have releasing stress down to a science. If you have time, schedule a visit-you'll be glad that you did.

Best Places To Relax in the U.S.

The Southwest has developed a reputation for spiritual healing and while that may be difficult for non-believers to swallow, no one will argue with the soothing power that the desert landscape has on frayed nerves. If you're looking to unwind, a trip out to the small Arizona town of Sedona, known for its red cliff canyons and artsy vibe, is a sure bet, but if you're looking to master the art of relaxation, book a stay at the Mii Amo Spa. The 24,000-square-foot destination spa retreat takes full advantage of its location with Native American rituals and ingredients designed to refresh both mind and body (we recommend a "smudging," an indigenous ritual designed to cleanse the spirit with the smoke of sage grass, followed by their signature facial).

If you're looking for a pristine, coastal escape, look no farther than Sanibel Island in Florida. Fifteen miles of unspoiled, white-sand beaches provide the perfect retreat for those seeking to lose themselves to sunbathing and swimming. Wildlife lovers will be in heaven here--the J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Preserve, which occupies over 50 percent of the island, is home to hundreds of creatures, including 230 types of birds, 50 types of fish, alligators, and dolphins. There are also opportunities galore for biking, canoeing and kayaking.

Sometimes relieving stress is as simple as letting loose and giving in to a little debauchery, and in that department, Las Vegas rules the roost. Between the casinos, the clubs, and the shows it doesn't take much to find the "sin" in this city. If you're looking for true relaxation, however, schedule a spa treatment at the Wynn Resort for the morning after a night on the town. There's something about being able to escape the neon and noise of the city into the comforting cocoon of the spa, with its warm peach and brown hues and feng shui-friendly design, that puts both mind and body at ease. Unwind with a stone ritual massage or a coconut crème scrub and then cap it all off with dip in the Jacuzzi.

Few places in the U.S. retain the wild feel of the Western Frontier like Montana, with its wide-open prairies, blue-skies, and snow-capped mountain ranges. For outdoor-lovers, it's the perfect place to find a little R&R and Runamuk Guest Ranch caters to just such a clientele. The 18,000-acre dude ranch in Roundup, Montana has been owned and operated by the same family since it first opened in 1886 and has developed a loyal following of visitors from across the country who come to ride horses, move cattle, practice yoga and soak up great scenery, hearty meals, and massage all in one fell swoop. For individuals looking to live out a cowboy fantasy and de-stress at the same time, this is the place.

Just two hours east of Los Angeles lies the pristine oasis town of Desert Hot Springs, known for its natural hot springs--one of the few geothermal springs in the world that doesn't exude the unpleasant odor of sulfur. Some people claim that soaking in heated mineral water can do everything from increasing blood circulation to stimulating your metabolism to reducing pain, but one thing is for sure--it certainly eases stress, which means relaxed muscles, a calmer mind, and lower blood pressure. Two Bunch Palms resort is one of the best places to soak up these benefits. The starring attraction is, of course, the geothermal mineral pools, but the resort also offers a tantalizing array of spa treatments from Shiatsu massage to waterdance therapy, where therapists gently cradle and stretch your body into yoga-like poses in one of their private, outdoor pools.

Golf and beach lovers alike find relaxation and fun at the Barefoot Resort in North Myrtle Beach. The resort has made a name for itself among golf enthusiasts thanks to four challenging, championship courses designed by Golf greats like Greg Norman, Pete Dye, Davis Love III, and Tom Fazio. Of course, the white sand beaches of the South Carolina shore also have something to do with the resort's appeal. When visitors aren't out practicing their golf swings, they can be found swimming, sunbathing, sailing or taking advantage of boardwalk extravaganza that is Myrtle Beach. Summer is the most popular time to visit, but the resort attracts visitors year-round.

Just a little over an hour from New York City, the Great Lakes Region of Pennsylvania has long attracted nature-lovers and urbanites seeking respite from the city. Visitors flock to the region for the opportunity to hike through lush forest, sail the sparkling waters of Lake Erie, and go bird-spotting. Nestled in the heart of this outdoor paradise is The Lodge at Woodloch--a winning spa that allows guests to simultaneously commune with nature and pamper both body and mind. In between exploring the surrounding woods and lake, guests can sign up for massages, yoga, meditation, kayaking, and even art lessons. In the evening, there is nothing more relaxing than curling up with a book in one of the rocking chairs on your own private veranda.

Napa Valley may have a reputation as the premier wine region in the United States, but you don't have to be a wine connoisseur to find beauty in the scenery here. The crisp, California air and miles of gently rolling hills and vineyards make this area a serene oasis from everyday life. Many visitors choose to enjoy the surroundings and the wine-tastings on their own, but the best way to experience the region is via the Napa Valley Wine Train, which chugs its way through the valley, introducing travelers to the countryside, wineries, and top-notch, seasonal cuisine (prepared and served onboard the train) all at the same time.

The sound of running water is so comforting that many spas play recordings of the sound during treatments to help guests relax. Still, nothing beats the real thing. Streams and waterfalls exist throughout the United States, but only a few can rival the beauty of Manoa Falls in Hawaii. The awe-inspiring waterfall plummets down a sheer, 150-foot cliff into a small pool surrounded by a rainbow-streaked mist. The journey to the Manoa is just as inspiring as the vision of the falls themselves--the easy, 1.5-mile hike winds its way through lush, green rainforest and bamboo forest to the base of the Ko'oaus Mountains, where the grand finale--Manoa Falls--makes you forget about the stresses of everyday life.
