With a fully palpable heat wave underway and August's triple digit-temperatures ahead, the thought of autumn breezes and (dare we say) winter chills seems like welcome relief. Don't get us wrong, our love for high temperatures goes back to a simpler time of sprinkler-running and ice cream-truck chasing, but planning that last summer escape usually conjures anxiety-inducing images of throngs of sweaty crowds in Rome and New York. Instead of just retreating into the air-conditioning until the sun goes down, jet to a cooler summer destination that's more balmy than blistering hot.

From short jaunts to longer-haul trips, these destinations have summer breezes aplenty, which means an ice cream cone in the middle of the day is a want, not a need. Plus, booking stays in these cooler locales in the summer off-season can mean big savings.

Instead of waiting for winter, take advantage of off-season discounts and plenty of summery, outdoor adventures in Breckenridge, Colo. For a taste of life down under, Auckland, New Zealand is a cool choice with wine tastings from abundant vineyards and fresh fish from generous harbors during their mild winter.

From street food festivals in temperate San Francisco to culinary boot camp on Canada's Prince Edward Island, these are eight destinations where sitting inside in the middle of an August day is unacceptable. So, if you can't stand the heat...
The Disney Wonder's first Alaskan port of call is the gold rush town of Skagway, where prospectors flocked by the boatload in 1896 after the glittering ore was discovered.

While the gold supply is pretty much tapped out and Disney's boats are a little more luxe, modern-day prospectors can still get a feel for what prospecting life was like. At Liarsville, a restored gold rush trail camp, guests can take a step back in time and try their hands at panning for gold - joined by a rough and tumble group of unshaved Disney characters.

When panning begins to get tiring, visitors hop aboard the White Pass and Yukon Route Railroad and take a three-hour ride up mountains and through forests. There are breathtaking views from the coaches and even the opportunity for adult-only time during the second half of the ride, when the kids are taken to an activities car and entertained.

Cruisers interested in roughing it can take in nature at canopy level on a zip-line course through the thick pine forest.

Gas prices and high airfare are going to suck for summer travelers in 2011. At least that's what we've gathered from our first Great Big Summer Travel Poll. Not the most shocking discovery - travelers despise expensive gas and pricey airfare. But, other results might come as a surprise...

Results like 51.3% (1,266 votes) of those surveyed who voted "No" when asked "Is the slow economy affecting your travel plans this summer?" is a bit of a shock. 48.5% (1,232 votes) of respondents said they'll spend $1,500 or more on summer travel this year (the second highest percentage was for 15.9%--or 403 votes--who said they'll spend $500 - $1000 this summer.

These results are interesting as gas prices are soaring, and typically do every summer. Airlines are hiking fares, and the economy is still sluggish. So what's the deal?

Take the following into consideration:

49.4% (1,254 votes) responded they are traveling in the U.S. when asked "Where are you traveling this summer?" The second most votes were by those saying they're not traveling at all at 19.7% (579 votes), followed by those traveling internationally at 16.7% (491 votes) and vacationers planning international and U.S. travel at 14.2% (419 votes)--lucky people!

As most poll participants are traveling only in the U.S., and since the biggest pet peeves of those polled were high gas prices (36.9%, 890 votes) and expensive airfare (36.9%, 890 votes), it seems likely that people are spending the majority of their money in areas within easy striking distance of travelers--their own city, state or general locale.

AOL Travel user Viegram commented: "No travel for us this year. Airfares and gas is way too high. Family reunion canceled due to high costs. We live in Orlando so we will be doing local attractions. Plenty of discounts at the Florida attractions if you can take the stifling heat!"

People are spending more, but doing so closer to home to avoid excessive transportation costs. Instead of spending that $1,500 on airfare or fuel, it's going to be spent on actual travel activities, amusement parks, at the beach, national parks, or weekend getaways.

What travelers aren't doing

Going on cruises. A staggering 89.4% (2,081 votes) of participants said they are not going on a cruise this summer compared with 10.6% (246 votes) who said they are.

Historically cruises are more popular in the fall, winter and spring which partly accounts for the large amount of "no" votes. It can't help that June through November is hurricane season in the Atlantic (it's May through November in the eastern Pacific). That tends to put a damper on folks wanting to get on a large boat.

Hurricanes or no, there isn't a lack of cruise options out there during the summer. There are Caribbean cruises, and plenty of routes around Europe and Alaska.

Mediterranean cruises tend to be more expensive and they leave port from European cities (obviously), so there's the added cost of getting there from the U.S. And, with expensive airfare a concern among travelers, dishing out the funds for a ticket to Europe, then another $500 and up for a cruise makes ships leaving locally during the peak times more appealing.

For travelers who are too impatient to wait for summer to start, or eager to take advantage of time off during Memorial Day weekend, May is just around the corner. When planning travels, it's important to keep in mind that international destinations (especially those on the Mediterranean, Caribbean and in the Northern Andes) experience ideal weather conditions in May. And since summer rates don't kick in until mid-June, it's possible to travel in May and avoid the inflated costs of summer.

2011 has already been an interesting year for travelers (think sleepy air traffic controllers, potential national parks shutdowns and giant holes in airplanes). We asked our Facebook fans where they'll be going this summer, and received a mixed reaction - plenty of enthusiasm and excited travelers, but also some financial worry and international concern sprinkled throughout.

Economic factors aren't playing along in favor of consumers looking for a bargain vacation this summer, as airlines have continued to add on fuel surcharges and baggage fee increases. Gasoline prices in the United States are on the rise as well.

For example, Conrad K. told us on Facebook that his budget won't allow for big travel plans this year: "Staying home - can't afford the gas!!!," he commented.

There are also some destination-specific considerations applicable in the summer of 2011. Repercussions from the disaster in Japan are likely to continue into the summer months, and might restrict some travel plans in Asia.

The political upheavals in North Africa and the Middle East continue to have an effect on summer travel this year as well. While popular destinations (such as Bahrain or the pyramids in Egypt) have claimed that tourism is back to business as usual, a decline in visitors to those regions might not be surprising.

Still, plenty of comments on our Facebook wall reveal readers who are ready to vacation abroad this summer. Debbie H. is excited about her trip to Europe: "Carnival cruise on the magic to Italy and Spain cannot wait!"

Tarcious P. is Caribbean-bound: "DOMINICA nature island of the Caribbean [sic].. Best choice [sic] ever...;)"

Summer is still prime time to get out for family travel, beach vacations, road trips and more. According to our Facebook page, many of you are looking at Hawaii, New York, and Niagara Falls for summer escapes.

What are you planning for the upcoming season? Will you be spending as much money this year on travel as you have in previous years? Are you packing up for an international adventure, or staying stateside? Take a look at our travelers' poll and give us the stats on where you'll be going - and if some of the global and economic events of the past few months will have an impact on your vacation plans into the next season.
Peanuts, crackerjacks and home runs: baseball stadiums are the stuff summer is made of. Luckily, there are 29 stadiums in the U.S., each ripe for a summer time visit. There are 5 ballparks, however, that stand out as their own kind of Mecca to fans.

Wrigley Field
Try to ignore the Cub's losing streak and enjoy the history of this 1914-built stadium. Smaller than your average ballpark (it's the country's 10th smallest), Wrigley Field boasts outfield walls swarming in ivy and a hand-turned scoreboard. Soak-up the baseball nostalgia that has played host to the filming of movies like "A League of Their Own," "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," "Rookie of the Year," and countless TV shows. Take a photo underneath that iconic red marquee; hardcore fans can shell out for a daily tour that includes visits to the press box, clubhouses and dugouts.

Fenway Park
The oldest stadium currently in use, Fenway is modest and unassuming from the outside, and anything but inside. The stadium is now home to new solar panels; the Red Sox were the first team in the Major Leagues to try out this green initiative. Fans around the country come here to honor baseball's tradition. Book early for a tour and spy on players during batting practice, and plan ahead for 2012, the stadium's centennial, when Fenway will undoubtedly plan the season of a lifetime.

Camden Yards
Enjoy sweeping views of Baltimore's Inner Harbor from the recently renovated Camden Yards. After it's 1992 makeover, the stadium's wide walkways and spacious design were not only commended, but have been duplicated in several new parks. The retro-cool park was created around the base of a former railroad center and is just minutes from another baseball legend: the birthplace of Babe Ruth. While it's a newbie, the stadium has already seen some exciting games and milestones like Cal Ripken Jr.'s 2,131st game - breaking Lou Gehrig's former record- and Eddie Murray's 500th home run.

AT&T Park
In the past 9 years this park has been known as Pacific Bell Park and SBC Park before taking a namesake after AT&T. But who needs a name when it's located right smack on the edge of San Francisco Bay? Besides stellar views, the unique setting has been known to assist games in crucial times, like when balls soar over the 24-foot high right field wall, named in honor of Willie Mays and into the adjacent cove, named for Willie McCovey. The park is even a destination for non-sports fan; the stadium boasts free Wi-Fi and a 'make your own mascot store' featuring the San Francisco Giants' mascot, Lou Seal.

Citi Field
One of two new ballparks gifted to New Yorkers in recent years, Citi Field is not so much an homage to former Mets home Shea Stadium, as it is a mecca of fantastic ballpark food. Here, fans can enjoy plates of sushi, expertly made rum cocktails and even sweet treats from Manhattan burger sweetheart Shake Shack. Tai Pan Bakery, known for delicious and authentic Chinese treats, has an outpost here, as does Kozy Shack, who has an entire kiosk full of gluten-free meals. Fans can get their shop on at boutiques like the Mets Museum and Touch by Alyssa Milano, where cute baseball styles for women abound.
Originally billed as the "International 500-Mile Sweepstakes Race" in 1911, the Memorial Day weekend high-speed automobile race in Indiana soon became known as the "Indianapolis 500," "The Indy 500," or simply "The 500." The Indianapolis Motor Speedway, nicknamed "The Brickyard" because it once was paved with bricks, opened in 1909. The first 500-mile race took place in 1911.

At Churchill Downs, Derby Day is as much about fashion as it is about thoroughbred racing. It's arguably the most fashionable event in sports. Unless your tickets are in the casual infield section, dressing down is a major no-no. Think springtime at the country club. Men wear seersuckers or light-colored sport coats, usually with a snazzy hat. Ladies wear chic pastel dresses or suits, but the real focus of a woman's ensemble at the Kentucky Derby is her hat. Derby Day is not a time for stylish subtlety - be bold with your hat selection. Wear something large and colorful and you'll fit right in. Check out this photo gallery if you need some fashion inspiration for the Kentucky Derby 2011.

The Kentucky Derby itself is just a one-and-one-quarter mile horse race, over in about two minutes' time, but it's part of some much larger traditions. It's the first leg of the annual United States Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing, and it determines which horse will have a chance at winning the first Triple Crown since 1978. The Triple Crown Races are the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes, and the Belmont Stakes, and these races are only open to three-year-old horses, so each horse only has one shot at racing's most coveted prize. The early favorite in the Kentucky Derby 2011 is Uncle Mo. You can read about all 13 entrants here.

The Derby is the biggest race of the day (and of the year) at Churchill Downs, but there will be races and betting all day long. Come in the morning and sip traditional mint juleps all day while you watch the races. Many of the very best seats are already sold out for the Kentucky Derby 2011, but there are still plenty of tickets available in the grandstand and the infield. Tickets in the grandstand offer great views, easy access to the betting windows, and fabulous style all around you. The infield is another story. If you care about seeing the race or not getting beer spilled on your outfit, don't get infield tickets. But if you just want a party atmosphere, these cheap seats are perfect (but they're not seats; you'll be standing, and don't expect to see the horses).

In addition to mint juleps, a thick, meaty stew called burgoo is a Kentucky Derby tradition. Whether you're in Louisville or hosting a party at home, these are essential elements.

If you need a hotel in Louisville for the Kentucky Derby 2011, act quickly. This is the biggest event of the year in Kentucky, drawing over 155,000 fans, so rooms will sell out early. In keeping with the style of the Derby, try getting a room at an elegant five-star hotel like the historic Brown Hotel downtown, or the Seelbach Hilton.
Summer 2011 holidays begin with the Summer Solstice on June 21 (in the Northern Hemisphere), the longest day and shortest night of the year. Over the centuries, this day has been known as Midsummer, St. John's Day or Litha and was especially important in such ancient religions as Druidism and Wicca. Summer 2011 officially ends on September 21, when fall begins.

So when is Easter 2011? The quick answer for most Christian religions is April 24.

Most churches determine the date by the appearance of the "paschal" full moon, which is the first full moon that rises on or after the Vernal, or Spring, Equinox. Easter Sunday comes on the first Sunday after that moon. The roots of the word "paschal" trace to the Greeks "Pascha," which itself derives from the Hebrew "pesach." In English, both words mean "Passover," which is the Jewish holy season that celebrates the Israelites' release from slavery in ancient Egypt.

After much controversy during the early centuries of Christianity over determining exactly when Easter is, this method has been widely accepted over the years.

However, determining which date Easter 2011 is on gets a little more complicated when you consider that the paschal moon is not necessarily an actual full moon and that not all religions track time by the same calendar that's hanging on your wall.

The paschal moon is one of the "ecclesiastical moons" of the lunar calendar, which is based on the lunar cycle with months of 30 or 29 days. The ecclesiastical moon falls on the 14th day of the lunar month and is sometimes is a few days off from the actual full moon because of cumulative small variances in the lunar calendar. In 2011, the paschal moon happens to fall on the same date as the full moon in the sky - April 17.

Further complicating matters is that most Eastern Orthodox churches calculate when Easter is based on the old Julian calendar, rather than the Gregorian calendar used by Western churches. Because of this, Orthodox Easter Sunday can be take place several weeks from the Western celebration. In 2011, though, Orthodox Easter is also on April 24.

Incidentally, Easter Sunday in the Western religions can fall on any date from March 22 to April 25. And as far as the Easter Bunny, don't worry; he very carefully keeps track of when Easter is, and has not missed one yet.
