Sitting between three bodies of water and the Coastal Mountain Range, Vancouver benefits from gorgeous scenery. Mountains are well and good, but visitors would do well not to be distracted from the city's happening cultural scene. Fast-paced Vancouver is buzzing with young artists, creative musicians, and all-around eccentric thinkers that create a unique twist on the typical "modern city." While wandering the city's bustling streets, pedestrian's pass stylish vintage stores, trendy little restaurants, and probably a few lively street performers.

Vancouver has found a way to maintain its status as Canada's frontier town: pushing boundaries. Visitors would be well-advised to join the maddeningly hip crowd.

Profiles in Mileage: Photographer of the Stars

The United States glows in the dark.

As soon as the sun sets, bulbs flick on and the stars grow dimmer as light spreads to fill the night. Finding darkness takes careful planning, patience and, for Nick Risinger at least, a fueled-up station wagon.

Last year Risinger, a 28-year-old amateur astrophotographer, drove 15,000 miles around the American west in search of the pitchest blackness in order to capture the ultimate portrait of the heavens. With his father, Risinger criss-crossed the deserts of eastern Oregon, Arizona and Texas, seeking out light pollution free areas to get many of the 37,440 exposures he has now stitched together into a single massive image, his Photopic Sky Survey.

"I'd been to dark places before, but not the darkest places," Risinger told Aol Travel. "You have to hit these places at the right time, when they have dry air and no cloud, when there is a new moon. It takes a lot of planning"

In order to find the right places to set up his six camera astrophotographer rig, which rotates in time with the earth in order to avoid blurring images, Risinger used a custom built application that laid a light pollution map of the U.S. over Google Maps, allowing him to see weather predictions and predict when the deserts would go dark.

Even with all this planning, Risinger struggled to find the conditions he needed, looking up to find himself under popular airline routes or discovering that certain areas were simply too far out of the way. He slept in his car, but was always tired.

"I had not realized how expansive the country really is," says Risinger, who listened to old Beatles records to pass the time as he drove by day down Route 93, the west's major North-South thoroughfare. "I got to see some amazing stuff, but I definitely wasn't the traditional tourist. I think I spent 45 minutes at Arches National Monument."

Risinger's favorite spot was an oasis in the desert Arizona, but he can't quite remember the name. The man has logged a lot of miles since quitting his job in marketing.

In order to photograph the entire Milky way Risinger had to travel to South Africa, where he set up on a ranch full of Springbok 4 hours northeast of Cape Town.

"Seeing the sky from the Southern Hemisphere for the first time was amazing to me," says Risinger. "The Milky Way was suddenly straight overhead and I found the landscape beautiful too. At night we heard jackals."

Risinger is back in Seattle now, receiving some well-earned attention from the astrophotography community. Last week he saw his image projected in a planetarium for the first time.

"I think about South Africa a lot," he says, but he seems less than eager to plot his future travels. "I wouldn't have done this if it wasn't a personal passion. I aged 5 years in the last year."

Still, it was worth it.

"I wanted to capture the sky in a way that people hadn't seen. This project was about context, ours and the stars," says Risinger. "I think it worked."

Las Vegas is hardly lacking in the night life department. Yet there are such a plethora of spots in this mecca of fun that figuring out where to spend time (and money) is half the battle. Put indecision aside and grab a drink or plate at these stellar newcomers and oldies but goodies that won't disappoint.

The Playboy Club
The iconic little bunny tails live on at The Playboy Club, Hef's namesake. But this spot has come a long way since the days of gentlemen smoking cigars. At today's Playboy Club, expect hip-hop music, VIP gaming tables and views from the top of The Palms.

Inside the Chandelier
The best thing about this Cosmopolitan stunner? It's still kind of a secret. Sandwiched on the middle floor of the new hotel's iconic chandelier centerpiece, the little bar is managed by an expert molecular mixologist who concocts sweet drinks with edible plants and freeze dried fruit. Try the Verbena cocktail, which includes an edible flower called the 'buzz button' that pops open, or the Madame Curry, a very spicy Thai-inspired drink. The bar also has TK# private gaming booths.

Pure Nightclub
With 30,000 feet of dancing space, pink strobe lights and a plush red VIP section, Pure couldn't be any sexier if it tried. Yet the staff here is more helpful and less ego-damaging than nearby nightclubs. The current sweetheart of the Vegas clubs scene, this Caesars venue is filled to the brim with sweaty dancers by midnight, so arrive early.

Dragon Noodle Co.
Hear that? It's your stomach and it's asking you to find a meal after your long night hopping through all those Vegas clubs. Stop in to Monte Carlo's Dragon Noodle Co. for the kitsch factor - it's loaded with paper lanterns and smiling cat figures. But stay for the surprisingly authentic menu of huge plates; try the Wok Tossed Garlic Eggplant and the Singapore Rice Noodles.

Sugar Factory
A brand new venture right inside Paris Las Vegas, Sugar Factory is one part candy store, two parts epic Las Vegas club. Comfort food staples get a sweet makeover with top menu items like Red Velvet Pancakes and Chocolate Pizza. For a tasty nightcap, the Chocolate Lounge features premiere chocolatiers and gourmet fondue to be paired with the champagne or dessert wine of your choice. Inside the Royalton in New York City

When planning a trip to New York City, consider several important factors for choosing a where to stay. The city offers 5 star accommodations at posh luxury hotels like the Four Seasons and The Setai Fifth Avenue and some unique affordable options like Fashion 26 in Chelsea by The Fashion Institute of technology or at one of the two townhouses at Hotel 414. The Morgans Hotel Group offers some modern boutique hotel options including the soon to open Mondrian Soho, the Hudson, The Morgans, and the Royalton. With the expert advice of six of the country's best bartenders, including Richard Boccato of Weather Up in Tribecca and Eric Alperin from The Varnish in Los Angeles, the menu at Forty Four includes classic cocktails, punch bowls, and new original creations. The inspired Reconciliation is made with rye whiskey, Amaro Lucano and house made orgeat. To pair with the drinks the bar menu includes delicious flatbread with duck confit and dried cherries, risotto poppers with sage, and decadent little cheeseburger sandwiches.

Designed by Philippe Starck, rooms at the Royalton feature clean lines and sleek minimalism. On the desk, an iPad is docked ready for guests loaded with maps and other helpful apps. The glossy dark wood headboards on beds with soft white sheets fit well with the minimalist style. In the bathroom, slate showers and round tubs with tiny sparkling tiles add glamour. Rooms range from a comfortable standard to three chic penthouse suites.

Inside the Magic Castle

Few experiences in Los Angeles are more iconic that a visit to the world famous members-only Magic Castle. This Victorian Mansion above Hollywood Boulevard houses the Academy of Magic Arts, an organization devoted to the advancement of magic. For an evening of evening of entertainment and magic, members and their guests must follow the strict dress code: coat and ties for the men, eveningwear for the women. No casual clothing. The castle is 21 and over, with the exception of Sunday brunch which is open to families. The magicians and members believe that following the rules as well classy and respectful behavior helps make an evening at the Magic Castle truly special.

Once inside the castle, bartenders man several bars to order drinks. Visit Irma, the invisible piano playing ghost, and be sure to ask her about the odd painting of a baby over the fireplace. Head upstairs to one of the five dining rooms for dinner. To see the magic shows, explore the castle to find stage magic and grand illusions in the Palace of Mystery, cabaret style magic in the Parlour of Prestidigitation, and sleight of hand close up miracles in the 22 seat Close-Up Gallery. The Magic Castle offers that special experience that brings out the child-like wonder in everyone from the staff and magicians to the members and guests.

On a recent night at the castle, one magician found himself stranded on stage in shredded clothes after a fight with an invisible tiger, while another made a bubble float and bounce in mid air. Magic feats are performed, jokes are told, members of the audience often find themselves being pulled into the act on stage.

For the people who think they can guess how the magicain performs each trick should be sure to catch a show in the Close-Up Gallery. Once inside the audience sits so close, that during tricks by magicians like the award-winning David Minkin, the audience can not stop gasping and shaking their heads in disbelief.

David Minkin has been performing at the castle for many years. According to Minkin, "The Castle is unique in that it is generally considered the home of the world's magic community. It is an extraordinary venue, and every week it features some of the most talented magicians from around the world. It is invitation-only, so you need an invitation from a member or a magician to attend."

When asked about performing in the Close-Up Gallery, Minkin replied, "The Close-Up Gallery is a special room for many reasons. Not only is it the most intimate room at the castle with only 22 seats, but it is also the most sought after place for magicians to perform. It has a rich history in terms of the names of prominent magicians who have performed in it. And this room, with its elegant decor and tiered seating, showcases close-up magic in a very classy way.
In the past, I've enjoyed working there with guys like David Acer, John Carney, and Richard Turner. It's always fun passing each other in the green room and talking about the shows, and the guests, and performing in general."

When asked to divulge how he performs his tricks Minkin, isn't likely to share his secrets, but he is willing to offer advice on how to visit this members-only club. "Write a nice letter or email to a Magic Castle magician letting them know how much it would mean to you to visit. If you demonstrate that you are going to be respectful of the club you have a good chance of getting in."

For accommodations close by, stay at the Magic Castle Hotel. Local attractions include the Walk of Fame, Grauman's Chinese Theatre, Madame Tussaud's Hollywood, Hollywood Bowl, and Yamashiro restaurant which has the some of the most spectacular city views of LA as well as a Thursday open air Farmer's Market in the spring and summer.

In 2009, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of The Magic Castle mansion, Jim Bentley recreated one of Harry Houdini's famous straightjacket escapes while suspended by a crane high over the rooftop. With any luck and a little magic, illusions will be performed at The Magic Castle for the next 100 years and beyond.

Like going to New Orleans for Mardi Gras, doing Spring Break in Key West means going to the party. A week of placid serenity this is not. With that in mind, here's our list of the top five Key West Spring Break hangouts, from the best bars to the craziest clubs.

You can't miss Sloppy Joe's. This 70-year-old Duval St. corner saloon is the one of the biggest and well-known watering holes in Key West. A body paint station in the back provides a happy medium for revelers who want to let loose and get nude, but not naked.

Key West is a wonderfully LGBT-friendly place, and the way vacationers tell it, the Aqua Nightclub's drag show is not to be missed. A little gender-bending fun can be the perfect way to spice up an evening of run-of-the-mill partying, and Aqua is also known for having the some of the best music around. Leave your reservations at the door and go with the flow.

5. Top 5 Key West Spring Break Hangouts - Cowboy Bill's Honky Tonk Saloon

The self-proclaimed "Southernmost Country Bar in the United States" has built a reputation for itself chiefly on two things: its one-dollar PBRs until 10 p.m., and its mechanical bull, which runs perhaps not-at-all-coincidentally from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. Tuesday to Saturday. Toss back a few brews, dance to some country music, and take a turn - or dare your friends - to conquer the mechanical steed. Either way, Cowboy Bill's will be part of a night to remember.

When the sun goes down on Virginia Beach, night clubs light up. The city is renowned for its nightlife, with bars and clubs to suit every palate, from bumpin' hip hop to wild drag shows. There are so many things to do, it can be hard to pick. Below are a few of our favorite Virginia Beach Night Clubs.

Peabody's

The biggest and most traditional Virginia Beach night club, Peabody's caters to the young bump n' grind crowd. There's free cover for college students on Fridays (with ID), and every Saturday, live DJs spin their "Bash at the Beach" gala (free cover before 9pm). Peabody's is Virginia Beach's "Jersey Shore"-style club; if you like candy-flavored shooters, big dance floors, thumping beats, and lots of scantily-clad twentysomethings, this is your spot.

Shaka's

Opened in 2009 in the space formerly occupied by Ohana's on Atlantic Ave., Shaka's has quickly become one of the top Virginia Beach night clubs. A spacious dance floor, hip DJs, and cool events -- like the weekly "Tuesday Talent Shows" where visitors can strut their stuff for friends and strangers -- keep people coming back. The venue also has a restaurant and raw bar, which is a great way to get energized before dancing. There's a live act or special DJ event happening almost every night from Thursday to Sunday, and plenty of specials to boot, so be sure to check before you go. The club is open Tuesday to Sunday, 5PM to 2AM.

The Cave

If hearing the same Top 40 grooves at the club isn't your cuppa, try The Cave, a Virginia Beach night club whose DJs spin a more edgy selection of hip hop and underground music. Cover charges are waived most nights until 11 for women, and on select nights for guys. Thursday features "Super Models and Bottles," with specials on bottle service.

Rainbow Cactus Company

Servicemen and women rub elbows with drag queens and surfers at the Rainbow Cactus Company, an eclectic but cosmopolitan venue unlike any other night club in Virginia Beach. There are drag races every night except Thursday (which features live karaoke) and special events throughout the year, in a relaxed, happy-go-lucky atmosphere. This Virginia Beach night club is a little off the beaten path -- about 10 miles from Atlantic Ave. -- but well worth the effort for a great night out spiced a little different from your average fare.

Funny Bone

If you don't feel like shaking your hips, consider letting your diaphragm do the work at the Funny Bone. Part of a chain of well-regarded comedy night clubs, Virginia Beach's Funny Bone has live comedy most Wednesdays through Sunday nights. You could see anyone from a hot local up-and-comer, a national touring act, or more esoteric fair like an "erotic hypnotist." Tickets generally range from $15 to $25 (less than the cover at some plain jane night clubs), and you get a solid show. It's the perfect place to sit back, have a bite to eat from their restaurant and a drink or three, and unwind (or wind up) to the week's festivities.

When you travel, you're free of responsibilities. There's nothing holding you back. So why not throw caution to the wind and get in on these wild Europe party scenes? Whether you are in the south, the north, the east, or the west, when you travel around Europe, you'll find some the greatest and most diverse places to let loose.

The continent may be famous for its food and culture, but with all backpackers and young travelers from around the world descending here, these European cities are prime party destinations for drinking heavily and staying up until dawn.

1. Ios, Greece
In my opinion, Ios is one of the best party destinations in Europe. In recent years, the island has tried to distance itself from its boisterous reputation for parties, but so far it has been unsuccessful. From May to September, hundreds of thousands of party goers descend on the island to compete for the world's best tan, drink heavily, and dance until the sun comes up. Bars stay open until dawn and no one wakes up until noon. Beach bars like FarOut hold day-time contests and parties. The god Dionysus would be proud with all the merriment going on here.

2. Barcelona, Spain
This is a city for night owls: No one here even goes out until 2 am and the clubs don't close until well after dawn. Start your night on Las Ramblas, which has a little bit of everything (shot bars, touristy spots, backpacker pub-crawls). When the clock strikes two, move to the clubs near the waterfront and dance until dawn. Don't feel bad about sleeping most of the day. This is the city that invented the siesta.

3. Lagos, Portugal
Lagos is where you'll find young travelers heading out for booze cruises, beach parties, and late night pub-crawls. And everyone nurses his or her hangover on the beach. Bronzed limbs are of the utmost importance in this small historical seaside town, so work on that tan before heading out to the bars and clubs. Water sports or beachside drinking dominate the day, while dancing dominates the night.

4. Ibiza, Spain
The reigning champ of European nightlife, Ibiza is where you go if you don't want to sleep for a week. It's like Ios or Lagos on steroids. Clubs are open until noon, being drunk is the norm, and the drug culture is obvious. Emperor Nero, famous for his orgies, would probably even be shocked at what goes on here. Ibiza is debauchery at its best.

5. Krakow, Poland
Historical Krakow is a beautiful place to visit, with its tiny streets lined with amazing cafes, clubs, and bars. The city has a sophisticated jazz scene, or seek out up-and-coming places where the parties go to the wee hours.

6. Prague, Czech Republic
I remember when Prague was an unknown destination with very few crowds. Today, it's cheap beer and cheap rooms make it a hot spot for Europeans and Brits looking for an easy weekend getaway (flights are inexpensive as well, so you'll encounter lots of stag and hen parties). It's not out of control like Ibiza, but with clubs open until dawn and a culture that loves to cut loose, Prague rates as one of the best party towns in Europe.

7. Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Amsterdam is not a city for wild drinking parties, making it the most low-key location on this list. The city is really a stoner's party and travelers visit Amsterdam to chill out at the famous "coffeeshops." You can still find a few good pub-crawls in the Red Light district, though, with good beer and great music venues like the Winston.

Dublin is obviously a great place to go on a pub-crawl, especially in its famous Temple Bar neighborhood. There seems to be at least one pub (or more) on every block and the close proximity is ideal for people who live for pub nights. But remember, this is not a cocktail town: Only serious beer lovers need apply.
