Fast-paced Vancouver is buzzing with young artists, creative musicians, and all-around eccentric thinkers that create a unique twist on the typical "modern city." While wandering the city's bustling streets, pedestrian's pass stylish vintage stores, trendy little restaurants, and probably a few lively street performers.

Vancouver has found a way to maintain its status as Canada's frontier town: pushing boundaries. Visitors would be well-advised to join the maddeningly hip crowd.

As soon as the sun sets, bulbs flick on and the stars grow dimmer as light spreads to fill the night. Finding darkness takes careful planning, patience and, for Nick Risinger at least, a fueled-up station wagon.

Last year Risinger, a 28-year-old amateur astrophotographer, drove 15,000 miles around the American west in search of the pitchest blackness in order to capture the ultimate portrait of the heavens. With his father, Risinger criss-crossed the deserts of eastern Oregon, Arizona and Texas, seeking out light pollution free areas to get many of the 37,440 exposures he has now stitched together into a single massive image, his Photopic Sky Survey.

"I'd been to dark places before, but not the darkest places," Risinger told Aol Travel. "You have to hit these places at the right time, when they have dry air and no cloud, when there is a new moon. It takes a lot of planning"

In order to find the right places to set up his six camera astrophotographer rig, which rotates in time with the earth in order to avoid blurring images, Risinger used a custom built application that laid a light pollution map of the U.S. over Google Maps, allowing him to see weather predictions and predict when the deserts would go dark.

Even with all this planning, Risinger struggled to find the conditions he needed, looking up to find himself under popular airline routes or discovering that certain areas were simply too far out of the way. He slept in his car, but was always tired.

"I had not realized how expansive the country really is," says Risinger, who listened to old Beatles records to pass the time as he drove by day down Route 93, the west's major North-South thoroughfare. "I got to see some amazing stuff, but I definitely wasn't the traditional tourist. I think I spent 45 minutes at Arches National Monument."

Risinger's favorite spot was an oasis in the desert Arizona, but he can't quite remember the name. The man has logged a lot of miles since quitting his job in marketing.

In order to photograph the entire Milky way Risinger had to travel to South Africa, where he set up on a ranch full of Springbok 4 hours northeast of Cape Town.

"Seeing the sky from the Southern Hemisphere for the first time was amazing to me," says Risinger. "The Milky Way was suddenly straight overhead and I found the landscape beautiful too. At night we heard jackals."

Risinger is back in Seattle now, receiving some well-earned attention from the astrophotography community. Last week he saw his image projected in a planetarium for the first time.

"I think about South Africa a lot," he says, but he seems less than eager to plot his future travels. "I wouldn't have done this if it wasn't a personal passion. I aged 5 years in the last year."

Still, it was worth it.

"I wanted to capture the sky in a way that people hadn't seen. This project was about context, ours and the stars," says Risinger. "I think it worked."
Las Vegas is hardly lacking in the night life department. Yet there are such a plethora of spots in this mecca of fun that figuring out where to spend time (and money) is half the battle. Put indecision aside and grab a drink or plate at these stellar newcomers and oldies but goodies that won't disappoint.

The Playboy Club
The iconic little bunny tails live on at The Playboy Club, Hef's namesake. But this spot has come a long way since the days of gentlemen smoking cigars. At today's Playboy Club, expect hip-hop music, VIP gaming tables and views from the top of The Palms.

Inside the Chandelier
The best thing about this Cosmopolitan stunner? It's still kind of a secret. Sandwiched on the middle floor of the new hotel's iconic chandelier centerpiece, the little bar is managed by an expert molecular mixologist who concocts sweet drinks with edible plants and freeze dried fruit. Try the Verbena cocktail, which includes an edible flower called the 'buzz button' that pops open, or the Madame Curry, a very spicy Thai-inspired drink. The bar also has TK# private gaming booths.

Pure Nightclub
With 30,000 feet of dancing space, pink strobe lights and a plush red VIP section, Pure couldn't be any sexier if it tried. Yet the staff here is more helpful and less ego-damaging than nearby nightclubs. The current sweetheart of the Vegas clubs scene, this Caesars venue is filled to the brim with sweaty dancers by midnight, so arrive early.

Dragon Noodle Co.
Hear that? It's your stomach and it's asking you to find a meal after your long night hopping through all those Vegas clubs. Stop in to Monte Carlo's Dragon Noodle Co. for the kitsch factor - it's loaded with paper lanterns and smiling cat figures. But stay for the surprisingly authentic menu of huge plates; try the Wok Tossed Garlic Eggplant and the Singapore Rice Noodles.

Sugar Factory
A brand new venture right inside Paris Las Vegas, Sugar Factory is one part candy store, two parts epic Las Vegas club. Comfort food staples get a sweet makeover with top menu items like Red Velvet Pancakes and Chocolate Pizza. For a tasty nightcap, the Chocolate Lounge features premiere chocolatiers and gourmet fondue to be paired with the champagne or dessert wine of your choice. Stop into the eatery's retail outlet which stocks their namesake crystal-studded lollipops popular with celebs like Kim Kardashian and Britney Spears.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Inside the Royalton in New York City

Filed under: Hotel, Food + Drink, Nightlife

When planning a trip to New York City, consider several important factors for choosing a where to stay. The city offers 5 star accommodations at posh luxury hotels like the Four Seasons and The Setai Fifth Avenue and some unique affordable options like Fashion 26 in Chelsea by The Fashion Institute of technology or at one of the two townhouses at Hotel 414. The Morgans Hotel Group offers some modern boutique hotel options including the soon to open Mondrian Soho, the Hudson, The Morgans, and the Royalton. The sophisticated lobby lounge and contemporary rooms at The Royalton hotel deliver a stylish midtown New York experience.

With an address that would make numerology enthusiasts swoon, at 44 West 44th Street, The Royalton's prime location is across from the historic Algonquin and close to Grand Central Station. The entrance, almost hidden, leads into a darkly mood-lit lobby. The discretely placed front desk, concierge and bell desk areas are all close by to be available, but do not dominate the reception area. The floor to ceiling hand-forged bronze fireplace sets the stage. Designed by Roman and Williams, the sophisticated lobby mixes cut glass elements with steel, thick leather walls and suede and hide furniture with several sunken lounges and seating areas with fire elements throughout.

Towards the back of the lobby, don't miss the cocktail lounge, the Forty Four. The Morgan's Hotel Group opened the Forty Four lounge at the Royalton with a cocktails menu created by the Cocktail Collective. With the expert advice of six of the country's best bartenders, including Richard Boccato of Weather Up in Tribecca and Eric Alperin from The Varnish in Los Angeles, the menu at Forty Four includes classic cocktails, punch bowls, and new original creations. The inspired Reconciliation is made with rye whiskey, Amaro Lucano and house made orgeat. To pair with the drinks the bar menu includes delicious flatbread with duck confit and dried cherries, risotto poppers with sage, and decadent little cheeseburger sandwiches.

Designed by Philippe Starck, rooms at the Royalton feature clean lines and sleek minimalism. On the desk, an iPad is docked ready for guests loaded with maps and other helpful apps. The glossy dark wood headboards on beds with soft white sheets fit well with the minimalist style. In the bathroom, slate showers and round tubs with tiny sparkling tiles add glamour. Rooms range from a comfortable standard to three chic penthouse suites.

The Royalton's location offers convenient access to the best of New York. Each day, guests return to a sophisticated retreat hidden from the bustle of the city and a vibrant lobby lounge scene to enjoy some of the best cocktails in Manhattan.
The New Jersey Shore is not the first place most people think of when they want a luxury getaway, but with its proximity to New York, Philadelphia and other bustling east coast metropolitan areas, Atlantic City is the perfect spot for some quick weekend pampering. With built-in activities, top level restaurants and plush rooms with water views, why give your wallet a workout for a hotel when you can stay on that classic boardwalk in an Atlantic City casino? Here are five of our favorites:
The Tropicana
Known affectionately as The Trop, this east coast outpost of the well known chain conjures up the same cocoa butter scent and exotic music of the Las Vegas location. Besides the classic table games and slots, The Trop offers up The Quarter, a connected branch that's packed with a food marketplace, clubs and restaurants - there's something here for just about everyone. For a true weekend getaway, step away from the roulette table and tee-off. Golf packages from half a dozen quality nearby grounds go hand-in-hand with a night at this Atlantic City casino.

The Borgata Hotel & Casino
A short ride away from the boardwalk you can find the Borgota sitting over a picturesque row of small yachts and boats at the nearby Trump Marina. With a top rated spa, boutiques at the Shoppes at the Water Club and lush rooms with extra spacious showers, this Atlantic City casino is a top choice for relaxing. Whether you're risking it all at the Borgata Poker Tournament, playing the slots or enjoying a meal at Bobby Flay Steak, you'll return from this casino well rested.

Harrah's Resort Atlantic City
Everything about Harrah's, from the festively dressed cocktail waitresses to the lingering smell of exotic drinks will remind you of your favorite casino. Keno, classic table games and even the World Series of Poker have a place on the gaming floor at this Atlantic City casino. When you've given up enough of your cash, pay a visit to the new Pool at Harrah's, a trendy departure from the typical casino pool, with built-in nightlife in the form of a hip party; a draw for the most attractive AC visitors and the tourists who love to watch them.

Caesars Atlantic City
Like its Vegas brethren, the Atlantic City Caesars has recently extended their property - right over a beautiful expanse of land practically merging into the rising surf of the Jersey shore. The Pier Shops at Caesars are decadent and fun, with high end candy shops, couture clothiers, world class restaurants and a spacious veranda where you can simply sit and watch the sun set over the ocean. Back in the tower you can experience the same luxury in the plush suites of the hotel, packed with thick, soft linens, state of the art entertainment systems and high end marble furnishings.

The Chelsea Hotel
If you'd like to stay close to the gaming but not right in it, try this cute boutique. Like something out of a mid-century magazine, the Chelsea aims to bring back those memories of Atlantic City past. All done up in funky 1960's decor but with a chic twist, this boutique is the perfect spot for a girls weekend. If you get hungry, Teplitzky's Diner, named as an homage to the hotel's original owners, lives on the first floor and serves all your home-cooked favorites. As an added bonus, The Living Room, the club just upstairs, masquerades as a dance floor, a bar, or simply a quiet space for a book or laptop, made-up to look like a house complete with living room and library.
When you plan a trip to Niagara Falls, the breathtaking waterfalls will surely be the focus of your trip, but after a ride on the Maid of the Mist and a few dozen photos, what else do you have in mind for your trip? You're not just going to stare at the water for a week, are you? There are plenty other area attractions besides just the famous falls. If you enjoy gambling, you may want to consider an excursion to one of the popular Niagara Falls casinos -- or perhaps even stay there for your visit. Here's an overview of the Niagara Falls casino scene.

Seneca Niagara Spa Hotel & Casino

This Niagara Falls Casino opened on the New York side of the falls in 2002, and features 82,000 square feet of gaming space. Try your luck at one of their 4200 slot machines or 100+ table games on the casino floor, including all the classics like blackjack, roulette, craps, and more. Seneca Niagara is currently the only Niagara Falls casino on the US side with live poker, offering Texas Hold'Em, Omaha, and 7-Card Stud.

You must be 21 or older to enter the casino, but guests of all ages are welcome at the hotel. When you stay at Seneca Niagara, you'll find luxurious accommodations at moderate prices. The hotel has enough dining options to satisfy any craving and any budget, from an all-you-can-eat buffet to a high-end steakhouse. Don't skip the spa -- services include massage treatments, body wraps, and salon services.

Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort

Fallsview Resort is one of two major Niagara Falls casinos on the Canadian side of the falls, and one of the largest casino floors in the world at 200,000 square feet. You'll find over 3000 slot machines in a sophisticated casino setting, along with all the favorite table games like baccarat, blackjack, craps, roulette, pai gow, and also some fun new twists on the old classics like blackjack switch and double attack blackjack.

You'll be hard pressed to find a hotel with better views than the Niagara Falls views you'll get from your window at the Niagara Fallsview Resort. In addition to a full service spa, the resort offers a state-of-the-art fitness center, shopping, golf, and over a dozen restaurants to choose from.

Casino Niagara

This huge Niagara Falls casino on the Canadian side offers 1500 slot machines, table games like blackjack, craps, roulette, and several other favorites, a sports book, a poker room, and plenty of tournaments. Casino Niagara is not a hotel, but with several restaurants, lounges, and live entertainment, it's easy to spend all day here.

In the US, you must be 21 to gamble, but across the border, the legal gambling (and drinking) age is 19, so younger gamblers should stick to the Canadian Niagara Falls Casinos. Good luck!

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Inside the Magic Castle

Filed under: Hotel, Tips & Tricks, Arts & Culture, Nightlife

Few experiences in Los Angeles are more iconic that a visit to the world famous members-only Magic Castle. This Victorian Mansion above Hollywood Boulevard houses the Academy of Magic Arts, an organization devoted to the advancement of magic. For an evening of evening of entertainment and magic, members and their guests must follow the strict dress code: coat and ties for the men, eveningwear for the women. No casual clothing. The castle is 21 and over, with the exception of Sunday brunch which is open to families. The magicians and members believe that following the rules as well classy and respectful behavior helps make an evening at the Magic Castle truly special.

Once inside the castle, bartenders man several bars to order drinks. Visit Irma, the invisible piano playing ghost, and be sure to ask her about the odd painting of a baby over the fireplace. Head upstairs to one of the five dining rooms for dinner. To see the magic shows, explore the castle to find stage magic and grand illusions in the Palace of Mystery, cabaret style magic in the Parlour of Prestidigitation, and sleight of hand close up miracles in the 22 seat Close-Up Gallery. The Magic Castle offers that special experience that brings out the child-like wonder in everyone from the staff and magicians to the members and guests.

On a recent night at the castle, one magician found himself stranded on stage in shredded clothes after a fight with an invisible tiger, while another made a bubble float and bounce in mid air. Magic feats are performed, jokes are told, members of the audience often find themselves being pulled into the act on stage.

For the people who think they can guess how the magicain performs each trick should be sure to catch a show in the Close-Up Gallery. Once inside the audience sits so close, that during tricks by magicians like the award-winning David Minkin, the audience can not stop gasping and shaking their heads in disbelief.

David Minkin has been performing at the castle for many years. According to Minkin, "The Castle is unique in that it is generally considered the home of the world's magic community. It is an extraordinary venue, and every week it features some of the most talented magicians from around the world. It is invitation-only, so you need an invitation from a member or a magician to attend."

When asked about performing in the Close-Up Gallery, Minkin replied, "The Close-Up Gallery is a special room for many reasons. Not only is it the most intimate room at the castle with only 22 seats, but it is also the most sought after place for magicians to perform. It has a rich history in terms of the names of prominent magicians who have performed in it. And this room, with its elegant decor and tiered seating, showcases close-up magic in a very classy way.
In the past, I've enjoyed working there with guys like David Acer, John Carney, and Richard Turner. It's always fun passing each other in the green room and talking about the shows, and the guests, and performing in general."

When asked to divulge how he performs his tricks Minkin, isn't likely to share his secrets, but he is willing to offer advice on how to visit this members-only club. "Write a nice letter or email to a Magic Castle magician letting them know how much it would mean to you to visit. If you demonstrate that you are going to be respectful of the club you have a good chance of getting in."

For accommodations close by, stay at the Magic Castle Hotel. Local attractions include the Walk of Fame, Grauman's Chinese Theatre, Madame Tussaud's Hollywood, Hollywood Bowl, and Yamashiro restaurant which has the some of the most spectacular city views of LA as well as a Thursday open air Farmer's Market in the spring and summer.

In 2009, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of The Magic Castle mansion, Jim Bentley recreated one of Harry Houdini's famous straightjacket escapes while suspended by a crane high over the rooftop. With any luck and a little magic, illusions will be performed at The Magic Castle for the next 100 years and beyond.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Top 5 Key West Spring Break Hangouts

Like going to New Orleans for Mardi Gras, doing Spring Break in Key West means going to the party. A week of placid serenity this is not. With that in mind, here's our list of the top five Key West Spring Break hangouts, from the best bars to the craziest clubs.

1. Top 5 Key West Spring Break Hangouts - Sloppy Joe's

You can't miss Sloppy Joe's. This 70-year-old Duval St. corner saloon is the one of the biggest and well-known watering holes in Key West. The drink prices are only a little north of average but you can't beat the crowd-friendly ambience or the live music ('til 2 a.m.) if you're looking for a good time.

2. Top 5 Key West Spring Break Hangouts - Mallory Square Sunset Celebration

After a little happy hour pregaming, take your buzz over to Mallory Square at dusk and watch the sun go down with a cavalcade of street artists and performers celebrating the beginning of another crazy Key West night. Get there at least an hour before sunset (around 6:30 during Spring Break) if you want to get a good view and still have time watch the fire dancers and get your palms read.

3. Top 5 Key West Spring Break Hangouts - Garden of Eden Bar

Nothing says spring break like "clothing-optional," right? Exhibitionists and voyeurs alike are welcomed with open arms into this Duval St. party destination, where you're invited to wear as much or as little as you please. The bar is open during the day, where you can relax and sun yourself (they'll rent you a towel for a few bucks), but things really get going at night when the DJ starts spinning and the club atmosphere takes shape. A body paint station in the back provides a happy medium for revelers who want to let loose and get nude, but not naked.

4. Top 5 Key West Spring Break Hangouts - Aqua Nightclub

Key West is a wonderfully LGBT-friendly place, and the way vacationers tell it, the Aqua Nightclub's drag show is not to be missed. A little gender-bending fun can be the perfect way to spice up an evening of run-of-the-mill partying, and Aqua is also known for having the some of the best music around. Leave your reservations at the door and go with the flow.

5. Top 5 Key West Spring Break Hangouts - Cowboy Bill's Honky Tonk Saloon

The self-proclaimed "Southernmost Country Bar in the United States" has built a reputation for itself chiefly on two things: its one-dollar PBRs until 10 p.m., and its mechanical bull, which runs perhaps not-at-all-coincidentally from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. Tuesday to Saturday. Toss back a few brews, dance to some country music, and take a turn - or dare your friends - to conquer the mechanical steed. Either way, Cowboy Bill's will be part of a night to remember.
Whether you crave mountain vistas, city nightscapes or mellow beach scenes, there are bars around the globe where patrons are as happy to see out the windows as they are to be seen. From luxury hotels in the world's most glamorous cities to a humble shack on a Caribbean beach, these spots will have you ordering another round.
It doesn't take a jeweler's eye to see that the views of Simonsberg Mountain from the Delaire Graff Estate's bar and restaurant are world class. Diamond dealer Laurence Graff saw the heart-pumper of a vista in South Africa's Cape Winelands, razed the existing buildings, planted grapes and hired haute interior designer David Collins -- Madonna's and Tom Ford's BFF -- to decorate 10 lodges, a restaurant and bar. With cozy grape leather banquettes, modern art from Graff's private collection, and a panoramic view of vineyard valleys and the mountains beyond, this bistro-chic bar is a rare gem.
With steep mountains, a deepwater port, piercing skyscrapers and neon lights, the view across Victoria Harbor from the Chinese mainland to Hong Kong Island is so dramatic it has commanded the attention of empires. The plush over-water Lobby Lounge at the Intercontinental has unrivaled views each night at 8 pm, when the territory holds a harbor-wide Symphony of Lights display. Some 40 buildings on both sides of the harbor flash and dance to a sound and lights extravaganza replete with laser beams, searchlights, and synchronized neon displays celebrating the everyday energy and overwhelming spectacle of Asia's commercial capital.
The ideal hotel beach bar must include sunset views, flawless service and a potent shot of local culture; in Hawaii this translates to hula, ukulele and epic mai tais. The House Without a Key bar at the Halekulani on Waikiki Beach meets these requirements and more, serving up a perfect Pacific sunset every night to accompany your cocktail. Some beach bars stand out for their simple charm and empty beach views. A lonely shanty of driftwood and corrugated tin, painted with happy dayglo slogans, the Bomba Shack on Tortola's Cappoons Bay succeeds on the merits of little more than great vistas and good vibes. With a long stretch of talcum powder sand, deep azure waters, and the hunky surfers that gather the rolling swells, Bomba's has better sea-views than any other down-home surf shack in the Caribbean.
The lights of the Las Vegas Strip will never lose their hold on the hearts of travelers. Though there is no official count, the number of nightly proposals at the Top of the Mark seems higher than at the average hotel bar. The prime spot to see Vancouver cycle through its seasons is from the bar and restaurant atop Grouse Mountain. The drop off the peak is vast, with views stretching from Washington's Mt. The Red Sea is the home to some of the most elaborately colorful sea life on the planet, with a protected marine park that has become a must-see for beach-happy snorkelers and SCUBA divers. In the Israeli resort town of Eilat, this underwater bar is dedicated to this ocean world, some 650 feet off shore and around 15 feet below the surface. Eye-to-eye with the creatures of the coral reef, patrons sip cocktails in an aquatic-themed bar, comfy on sea urchin-printed cushions and romantically lit by both the ocean's waves and star-fish light fixtures.

The New York night life scene pulses through the city's arteries without missing a beat seven days a week. After the sun sets, the lights come on for anyone seeking their night life comfort zone: young or old, hip or square, gay or straight, resident or visitor. No need to worry about naming a designated driver; New York's famed taxi and public transportation systems will drop you steps from pretty much any place you desire.

New York night life encompasses myriad after-dark activities.

Want to catch a play? There's Broadway, off-Broadway, off-off-Broadway and even plenty of street performers.

Do your New York night life plans include a concert? The city boasts such storied venues as Madison Square Garden, Radio City Music Hall, the Metropolitan Opera and Carnegie Hall. Hundreds of more intimate musical settings dot New York's neighborhoods, and it's not unknown for major artists to pop into smaller places for a set or two after playing one of the big halls.

You'll find clubs featuring every style and genre of music to provide the soundtrack for your New York night life adventure: jazz, rock, hip-hop, soul, funk, classical, new wave, old wave, you name it. And you don't necessarily need to be of legal drinking age; many New York night life spots are open to all ages or teenagers, as well.

New York night life can be a great for a few belly laughs at one of the dozens of comedy clubs throughout the city. You'll find national and local comics doing their shtick on these stages.

What New York night life foray would be complete without a meal? From fine dining to pizza by the slice, the Big Apple will fill you up with some of the best food in the world. You're not bound by the dinner-time bell, either. There are plenty of places to satisfy those late-night or early-morning munchies.

And as the song goes, the neon lights are bright on Broadway. Or Times Square, Rockefeller Center and the velvet-rope nightclub hot spot where you hope the doorman deems you worthy of entry. Take a budget-friendly New York night life stroll through these blazing districts, especially during the holiday season, when it seems the entire city is garlanded with mind-blowing lights and displays. It's a great time to grab a cup of coffee or hot chocolate, sit at a street-side table and watch the neon-bathed crowds walk by.

No story about New York night life would be complete without a mention of Greenwich Village, where you can find a microcosm of the city's myriad nightlife options in the West Side neighborhood. Though the residential areas now cater to the middle- and upper-class demographic, you can still experience the vestiges of the Village's once-Bohemian lifestyle in its coffee shops, small theaters and street performances.

When planning your trip, consider your New York night life plans when booking your lodging.
This steamy Miami nightclub on West South Beach spotlights top-name DJs from across the country, which probably explains why the packed dance floor throbs every weekend to a hip-hop soundtrack. This hot spot is not for the thrifty or the shorts-and-ballcap crowd. Prepare to be silently judged on the pedigree of your outfit's designer. 2201 Collins Avenue.

Owned by Gloria and Emilio Estefan, this throwback venue to Havana's heyday will be the most likely place to park for celebrity spotting on any given weekend. Part restaurant, part dance club, Bongo's offers both live Latin music and DJ-driven dance mixes. And being right next to the Miami Heat's home arena, this Miami nightclub is a great place to get your groove on after catching an NBA game. 601 Biscayne Boulevard.

	LIV at Fontainebleau Hotel

A high-energy fusion of dance club and lounge luxury, this chic nightclub inside one of Miami Beach's most famous hotels gives a neon-tinged nod to Miami's colorful past while integrating its high-tech music system and special effects. Big spenders can reserve one of the six private skyboxes that gives a birds-eye-view of the club's interior. But don't get burned; the writhing crowd of passionate dancers can really heat things up on weekend nights. 4441 Collins Avenue.

	The Florida Room

If the tinkling of piano keys is more your musical style, you'll want to drop in to this cozy lounge nestled in the Delano Hotel. With a Lucite grand piano as its centerpiece, The Florida Room has hosted such luminaries as Lenny Kravitz and Jamie Foxx, performing under its mirrored ceilings and custom chandeliers. Not all Miami nightlife has a heavy beat. 1685 Collins Avenue.
If you love craft beer, you'll love this chill Miami nightlife hotspot. Operating in a restored wood-framed house, this cozy pub serves as a great place to meet a group of friends on a weekend night or just sit at the bar and sample some of its nearly 200 specialty beers. Just one rule: No hip-hop! Occasional live shows are also scheduled. Fear not if you are a wine lover; Abraxas offers a full wine list of vintages from all over the world. 407 Meridian Avenue.
When the sun goes down on Virginia Beach, night clubs light up. The city is renowned for its nightlife, with bars and clubs to suit every palate, from bumpin' hip hop to wild drag shows. There are so many things to do, it can be hard to pick. Below are a few of our favorite Virginia Beach Night Clubs.

	Peabody's

The biggest and most traditional Virginia Beach night club, Peabody's caters to the young bump n' grind crowd. There's free cover for college students on Fridays (with ID), and every Saturday, live DJs spin their "Bash at the Beach" gala (free cover before 9pm). Peabody's is Virginia Beach's "Jersey Shore"-style club; if you like candy-flavored shooters, big dance floors, thumping beats, and lots of scantily-clad twentysomethings, this is your spot.

Shaka's

Opened in 2009 in the space formerly occupied by Ohana's on Atlantic Ave., Shaka's has quickly become one of the top Virginia Beach night clubs. A spacious dance floor, hip DJs, and cool events -- like the weekly "Tuesday Talent Shows" where visitors can strut their stuff for friends and strangers -- keep people coming back. The venue also has a restaurant and raw bar, which is a great way to get energized before dancing. There's a live act or special DJ event happening almost every night from Thursday to Sunday, and plenty of specials to boot, so be sure to check before you go. The club is open Tuesday to Sunday, 5PM to 2AM.

	The Cave

If hearing the same Top 40 grooves at the club isn't your cuppa, try The Cave, a Virginia Beach night club whose DJs spin a more edgy selection of hip hop and underground music. Cover charges are waived most nights until 11 for women, and on select nights for guys. Thursday features "Super Models and Bottles," with specials on bottle service.

Rainbow Cactus Company

Servicemen and women rub elbows with drag queens and surfers at the Rainbow Cactus Company, an eclectic but cosmopolitan venue unlike any other night club in Virginia Beach. There are drag races every night except Thursday (which features live karaoke) and special events throughout the year, in a relaxed, happy-go-lucky atmosphere. This Virginia Beach night club is a little off the beaten path -- about 10 miles from Atlantic Ave. -- but well worth the effort for a great night out spiced a little different from your average fare.

Funny Bone

If you don't feel like shaking your hips, consider letting your diaphragm do the work at the Funny Bone. Part of a chain of well-regarded comedy night clubs, Virginia Beach's Funny Bone has live comedy most Wednesdays through Sunday nights. You could see anyone from a hot local up-and-comer, a national touring act, or more esoteric fair like an "erotic hypnotist." Tickets generally range from $15 to $25 (less than the cover at some plain jane night clubs), and you get a solid show. It's the perfect place to sit back, have a bite to eat from their restaurant and a drink or three, and unwind (or wind up) to the week's festivities.

In a city where you can gamble your life savings with one roll of the dice and luxury hotel suites go for five figures a night, it's hard to imagine anything being budget-friendly. But you really don't have to be a high roller to enjoy a great Vegas vacation. You can plan a trip to Las Vegas on a budget and still see all of the best things the city has to offer. From start to finish, we'll help you find all the best deals so you can have a great getaway on a modest budget.

Enjoying Las Vegas on a Budget - Your Flight

If you can't find a cheap flight to Las Vegas, you're not looking hard enough. Airlines constantly offer deals for trips to Vegas, so get on airlines' mailing lists to hear about special offers, and check online through airline sites as well as discount travel sites. A little persistence will go a long way -- don't settle for anything that doesn't seem like a great deal. You'll get the best prices when you fly mid-week or overnight, and you should be able to find tickets for under $100 each way, sometimes way cheaper, even.

Enjoying Las Vegas on a Budget - Your Hotel

Let's be honest -- if you're trying to do Las Vegas on a budget, you aren't going to be able to stay at the fanciest hotels. But that doesn't matter! You don't go to Vegas for the hotel room -- you're probably going to spend all your time out on the town anyway, right? You can always hang out at the Bellagio or the Venetian while catching your Z's at the Sahara or the Riviera. If you're willing to settle for a no-frills room, you'll be able to find some things for under $20/night, and you can get a perfectly comfortable room for under $40/night in some of the older hotels on the Strip. If you tend to stay at the same place each time you visit Vegas, sign up for their free rewards programs. You'll get special offers in the mail as well as discounts and freebies while you stay.

Enjoying Las Vegas on a Budget - Your Meals

The all-you-can-eat buffet is a Las Vegas institution. They've gone up in price in recent years, but every major hotel on the Strip has a buffet, and it's a good way to fill your belly in Las Vegas on a budget. You can often get discounts when you have a casino comp card, too. In addition to the hotel buffets, there's no shortage of great restaurants for any budget all over Sin City. In-N-Out Burger is a favorite fast food stop that won't set you back much, and the Peppermill restaurant offers huge servings at moderate prices on delicious items like burgers, steaks, and all-day breakfast options. Casinos with lower limits like Slots-A-Fun and the Sahara also tend to have cheaper dining options, like $1 or $2 foot-long hot dogs. Maybe not the most delicious meal you'll ever have, but definitely a good deal for a cheap, filling lunch on the go.

Enjoying Las Vegas on a Budget - Your Entertainment

Some of the best entertainment in Las Vegas is free -- just walk through the beautiful water fountain displays at the Bellagio, or take yourself to a romantic Italian village inside the Venetian. You can see a lot and get great photo ops in Las Vegas for no cost at all. But you'll want to dip into your budget at least a little to see one of the fabulous Las Vegas shows. Ticket prices may seem steep, but not to worry -- there are lots of ways to score cheap Las Vegas show tickets. As with all choices in Las Vegas on a budget, never pay full price!

Enjoying Las Vegas on a Budget - Casinos

Casinos are the real wild card in your Las Vegas budget. Maybe you'll hit it big on the first slot machine pull, and you won't ever have to worry about your budget again! But more likely, if you gamble, you're going to lose some money. Set aside a gambling budget before you enter a casino. Think of this as entertainment money -- never gamble more than you're willing to lose. Those losses are the price you pay for the fun you have at the tables. To stretch your gambling budget farther, stick to casino games with low limits. One of the best low limit casinos on the Strip is Casino Royale. Play games like $3 craps or their unique spin on Blackjack, Blackjack Switch. Casino Royale has a generous comps program with lots of free plays, so you can really stretch your budget for maximum gaming fun.

We all know that it's easy to lose big in a place like Vegas, but not if you are smart with your budget. Plan ahead and avoid stupid risks at the casinos, and you can vacation like a high roller in Las Vegas on a budget. The tips above will save you money on your trip to Vegas, but you can also find great savings with Las Vegas package deals. The more flexible you can be with your travel plans, the more you can save.

In this oasis of excess and luxury, what are the top Las Vegas casinos for you to spend some time and win some money?
Here are our picks for the top 5 Las Vegas Casinos:

MGM Grand - Las Vegas casinos are known for their recognizable design and décor and the MGM Grand is no exception. Enter the building by passing near an 88-foot gold lion and enjoy a massive gaming area including Majestic Lions progressive slots that pay out three-quarters of a million dollars daily. Sit down at a table and play some Blackjack, Pai Gow Poker, or even Casino War. Don't worry if you aren't sure how to play or what the rules are! Have a seat and the knowledgeable and friendly dealers will help you get started. If placing bets on races and sports is more your speed then you will feel right at home in the Race & Sports Book arena. Grab a bite to eat at a variety of fine dining restaurants (such as Tom Colicchio's Craftsteak or the Nob Hill Tavern by Michael Mina) or relax in one of the five pools in the Grand Pool Complex when you need a break from the tables. Be sure to check out The Lion Experience at MGM Grand, where you can view lions in a custom habitat inside this unique Las Vegas casino.

Bellagio - With one of the world's most incredible choreographed fountain displays outside, the beauty of the Bellagio continues as you enter one of the most refined of all Las Vegas casinos. Known for Bobby's Poker Room, the highest limit poker action in the world, this Las Vegas casino is a mecca for high rollers and elite players. There is also a high-limit area, Club Prive, for the big boys and girls to play in privacy in an art deco-inspired lounge. If you aren't a high roller, you will still find plenty of opportunity to test your luck at table games like Baccarat or Roulette and over 2,300 slot machines. With your winnings, enjoy a luxurious spa treatment like a Caviar Fusion Facial, or catch the breathtaking show "O" by Cirque de Soleil.

Venetian - When entering Las Vegas casinos, you may expect glitz and grandeur, but the Venetian hotel casino will still make your jaw drop. Play poker at one of the 39 tables in one of the largest poker rooms found in any Las Vegas casino, or see if Lady Luck is with you as you sit down and play one of the more than 139 other table games. Take some time while at the Venetian to step away from the casino and enjoy a gondola ride through the canals and under romantic bridges with your special someone. This is one casino in Vegas where you will want to bring your camera!

Mandalay Bay - As you've already seen, Las Vegas casinos offer more than just gaming in the buildings you'll visit. At Mandalay Bay, you have the opportunity to view North America's only predator-themed aquarium, the Shark Reef. There is even a tattoo studio on the property, Mario Barth's Starlight Tattoo, where you can get some new ink before heading to the Burger Bar for one of the most delicious burgers you may ever eat. When you're ready to get some gaming in, head to this fine Las Vegas casino floor and play any number of table games with calming water flowing around you in a tropical atmosphere. If you are a first-time poker player and aren't ready to jump in the game, we recommend taking advantage of the free poker lessons offered at 2:00pm Monday through Thursday.

Caesars Palace - If you want to experience one of Las Vegas' casinos inspired by ancient Rome, then Caesars Palace will suit you perfectly. If slots is your game, you'll enjoy a wide variety ranging in denomination from a penny to $500. If you prefer the tables, you will have plenty of opportunity to test your skill at one of the many regular or high-stakes tables available at Caesar's Palace.
Las Vegas has more entertainment options than you can imagine, and if you don't risk your savings on the casino floor, it's actually one of the most economical vacation destinations in America! You can get a lot of bang for your buck and spectacular entertainment for the whole family when you know how to get cheap Las Vegas show tickets -- we'll help you find the very best deals.

To get the cheapest Las Vegas show tickets, your best bet is to wait until the day of the show and buy your tickets from one of the ten Tix4Tonight locations on the Strip, offering tickets up to half off. The downside is that you don't get to plan in advance, so the show you want to see may be sold out, or you may not be able to get the best tickets. If you choose to get cheap Las Vegas show tickets from these vendors, think of several backup plans in case the show you want is sold out. Getting cheap show tickets this way can be hit or miss, but the good news is that there are always more shows, and so many great ones! There are at least ten shows to please any Vegas visitor, so if one or two of them are sold out, who cares? You're still going to have a blast.

If last minute planning isn't your style, you can often get cheap Las Vegas show tickets well in advance as part of a vacation package. When you purchase packages from travel agents, travel websites, or directly from your hotel, you can save money on every aspect of your vacation.

When you're in Las Vegas, you will undoubtedly be accosted by several people, either in your hotel or on the streets, offering you free show tickets and other sounds-too-good-to-be-true type deals. Of course these "free" Las Vegas show tickets come with plenty of strings attached, and they're anything but free in the long run. If it sounds too good to be true, it's because you missed something in the fine print. Don't rely on offers like this to get cheap Las Vegas show tickets.

If you've tried everything you can think of and you're still striking out on cheap Las Vegas show tickets, invest in the concierge services at your hotel -- start your stay with a generous tip to the concierge and they'll help you take care of reservations and arrangements for the duration of your stay.

There are lots of deals available in Vegas, mostly because the casinos expect you to give those discounts right back to them when you get to the slot machines and gaming tables, but if you stick to a reasonable gambling budget and take advantage of all the discounts, you'll save a lot of money on accommodations, flights, meals, and cheap Las Vegas show tickets. The real sin in Sin City is paying full price for anything.
In my opinion, Ios is one of the best party destinations in Europe. In recent years, the island has tried to distance itself from its boisterous reputation for parties, but so far it has been unsuccessful. From May to September, hundreds of thousands of party goers descend on the island to compete for the world's best tan, drink heavily, and dance until the sun comes up. Bars stay open until dawn and no one wakes up until noon. Beach bars like FarOut hold day-time contests and parties. The god Dionysus would be proud with all the merriment going on here.
2. Barcelona, Spain
This is a city for night owls: No one here even goes out until 2 am and the clubs don't close until well after dawn. Start your night on Las Ramblas, which has a little bit of everything (shot bars, touristy spots, backpacker pub-crawls). When the clock strikes two, move to the clubs near the waterfront and dance until dawn. Don't feel bad about sleeping most of the day. This is the city that invented the siesta.
3. Lagos, Portugal
Lagos is where you'll find young travelers heading out for booze cruises, beach parties, and late night pub-crawls. And everyone nurses his or her hangover on the beach. Bronzed limbs are of the utmost importance in this small historical seaside town, so work on that tan before heading out to the bars and clubs. Water sports or beachside drinking dominate the day, while dancing dominates the night.
4. Ibiza, Spain
The reigning champ of European nightlife, Ibiza is where you go if you don't want to sleep for a week. It's like Ios or Lagos on steroids. Clubs are open until noon, being drunk is the norm, and the drug culture is obvious. Emperor Nero, famous for his orgies, would probably even be shocked at what goes on here. Ibiza is debauchery at its best.
5. Krakow, Poland
Historical Krakow is a beautiful place to visit, with its tiny streets lined with amazing cafes, clubs, and bars. The city has a sophisticated jazz scene, or seek out up-and-coming places where the parties go to the wee hours.
6. Prague, Czech Republic
I remember when Prague was an unknown destination with very few crowds. Today, it's cheap beer and cheap rooms make it a hot spot for Europeans and Brits looking for an easy weekend getaway (flights are inexpensive as well, so you'll encounter lots of stag and hen parties). It's not out of control like Ibiza, but with clubs open until dawn and a culture that loves to cut loose, Prague rates as one of the best party towns in Europe.

7. Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Amsterdam is not a city for wild drinking parties, making it the most low-key location on this list. The city is really a stoner's party and travelers visit Amsterdam to chill out at the famous "coffeeshops." You can still find a few good pub-crawls in the Red Light district, though, with good beer and great music venues like the Winston.
8. Dublin, Ireland
Dublin is obviously a great place to go on a pub-crawl, especially in its famous Temple Bar neighborhood. There seems to be at least one pub (or more) on every block and the close proximity is ideal for people who live for pub nights. But remember, this is not a cocktail town: Only serious beer lovers need apply.
When making vacation plans to a mecca like New York or L.A., it's always fun to see the touristy spots, but even more fun to poke your head in the places that stars call their second homes. You know the ones -- the stores where they bought that handbag or that club where they danced the night away. But does that mean regular Joes can't get through the door if Hollywood A-listers hang there?
