With Venice in Danger, Protectors Look to Rich for Rescue

An Italian heritage protection group has issued a warning claiming that a rising tide of tourists in Venice is likely speeding the flooding of the city and recommending that the government cap the number of tourists before there is nothing left to visit.

According to Italia Nostra, a prominent domestic organization, Venice is receiving about 60,000 visitors daily, twice what the city's infrastructure can handle. The large cruise ships, tour boats and water buses that chug constantly around the lagoon are eroding the mud banks and pilings holding up the apartments, museums and churches.

"The Italian government has not lived up to its commitment made to UNESCO to safeguard Venice and its Lagoon," IN President Lidia Fersuoch told a press conference.

Fersuoch said she would ask UNESCO to take the city off the World Heritage list and put it instead on its endangered list, where it would join a group of lesser-known, less-trafficked sites. Though the estimates vary, a consensus of experts agree that Venice will likely sit under a great deal of water by the end of the century unless some form of drastic action is taken.

Italia Nostra's solution is an elegant one, quite literally. The organization proposes that Venice start marketing itself as a more exclusive destination for wealthy travelers.

For those keeping track, Venice is already a very expensive destination. Gondola rides can run tourists $100 or more and the bill for eating out near the major attractions makes visitors long for the lira.

It wouldn't be much of a stretch to say that the city has accidentally been implementing Italia Nostra's gentrification plan for the last twenty years. The tourists still come, apparently willing to shell out to experience the city's undeniable, if fading, majesty.

Cruise Crew Life: Living and Working Aboard a River Cruise Ship

"The crew makes the ship," declares Avalon Panorama hotel manager Dan Ungureanu as he makes his final dinnertime speech to guests. It was the end of the ship's first voyage through Germany, but the crew pulled everything off so seamlessly it was like they'd been traversing the same route for years.

As each crew member has their shining moment - a modest announcement of their name, job, and home country - it is easy to wonder how everything comes together. Each morning as guests sit bleary eyed at the breakfast table, the same waiter who served dinner the night before will smile and pour cups of coffee. And this is after the staff stayed up late doing closing out work and spending some time writing emails back home.

It turns out that many of these crew members have work days that last from 6am to 10am with only short breaks in between. They also stay on the ship and away from their friends and family for as long as eight months at a time. And they do it by choice.

In the Kitchen

Executive Chef Michael Zambersky works in a kitchen that is no bigger than a cramped hotel room - a workspace that he says is bigger and has a better layout than other ships he's worked on in the past. He and nine other employees work nearly round-the-clock to prepare three square meals a day for up to 160 people.

To get everything done, the ship employs a pastry chef who works alone to make all the on board sweets and two dishwashers who clean and peel potatoes and vegetables from dawn until well after dusk. The five other workers on Michael's staff are cooks.

When it comes down to crunch time, they have seven seconds to plate each elaborate course for meals that typically include five and seven plates of food - and that's not accounting for the fact that the ship gives guests two entree options, plus extra selections catered to vegetarians and those looking for healthy alternatives.

"It really is about organization and concentration," says the modest chef as he tries to portray the hustle and bustle of the tiny kitchen.

At the Front Desk

Another crewmember who knows a thing or two about organization is the senior receptionist, Petya Yordanova.

Petya has been working on ships for seven years and spends her days fielding questions from guests, keeping track of who is on land, answering phones, and putting together documents such as a daily bulletin and news updates in several different languages for guests.

When asked what the most difficult part of her job was, she didn't state an actual task but instead noted, "sometimes I miss the lazy days with nothing to do."

But Yordanova, who says she loves working on a ship because she gets to see different cities every day, has an advantage over other workers: she gets to work alongside her husband for much of the day. He's the hotel manager and also spends much of his time at the front desk. No wonder he think the crew makes the ship!

In the Dining Room

Sdenka Juranova, a server from the Czech Republic, is quite literally in the same boat. She's dating a crewmember on board. In reality, onboard romances are not uncommon when spending months on end together in close quarters. At least on the Avalon Panorama the crew has a little more privacy; their quarters house two people per room whereas most ships - both on rivers and ocean liners - hold four or more.

"I'm happy that I have the support," says Sdenka, who wakes up each day at 5:45am and finishes her day around 10:30. When she has free time, Sdenka says she likes to go explore the city and do some shopping, "but most of the time I'm sleeping because I'm tired."

Many other crewmembers had similar answers, saying they take naps or just sit back and relax when they have time off.

Peter Vadau, the Maitre'd or dining facilitator, says the hardest part of his jobs it to "motivate the tired crew" after a few months out on the water. Peter is unmarried and without children, and says he is typically away from home for eight months at a time.

Ariadi Putra, another server on the ship, has a wife two teenage children back home in Indonesia. He keeps in contact with them through email and smiles coyly when asked if he counts down the days until he sees his family. "The four month vacation is nice," he comments.

Why They Do It

The big breaks in between cruise seasons seem to be the main incentive for the crew to take these demanding jobs. Most say they chose to work on cruise ships because of their love for traveling, and many worked on ocean liners or in luxury hotels before joining the ranks of the Avalon Panorama.

The crew also held the company they work for in high regard. Peter, who has worked for Avalon for four years, says he feels like he is a part of the company. Others take pride in the design and cleanliness of the ship and proudly pointed out details where Avalon took their ideas into account, including the kitchen setup and less cramped cabins.

The 44 crewmembers who make sure every detail on the ship is prepped, pressed and perfect come from a variety of places. The majority come from Indonesia, Hungary, and Romania, but there are also some from Serbia, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Croatia, to name a few. Even at the end of the maiden voyage, the crew had already formed bonds and was working as a team. From a server helping another fold and carry a table to the hairdresser who doubles as a housekeeper when she isn't busy, it was clear that no matter what might go on behind-the-scenes to the guests everything was flawless.

Washington D.C. is a city that knows how to welcome the queen of daytime TV, business magnates, and heads of state from around the world. The Mandarin Oriental, The Four Seasons and The Ritz-Carlton offer lavish suites to pamper the powerful people who visit Washington D.C.

During a recent tour of the most exclusive hotel suites in Washington D.C. we learned how hotels prepare for VIP visits from world leaders, CEOs, and influential media moguls. Oprah Winfrey has made many appearances in the capital to visit the first family for the inauguration and to attend the Kennedy Center Honors. Washington D.C. is a city that knows how to welcome the queen of daytime TV, business magnates, and heads of state from around the world. The Mandarin Oriental, The Four Seasons and The Ritz-Carlton offer lavish suites to pamper the powerful people who visit Washington D.C.

Prepping for VIPs: It Takes an Army...Or a Security Detail

When asked how the hotel staff prepares for the arrival of a VIP, Mandarin Oriental General Manager Amanda Hyndman leads her team to understand the specific requirements for each guest. The staff confers with their travel agent or butler to find out how the room should be prepared.

With many guests arriving from around the world, we asked Hyndman how the Mandarin Oriental handles caring for guests who speak so many different languages. The staff at the hotel represents 58 countries and many languages, so they can plan accordingly. Last year delegations from China, Thailand and the Ukraine were all met and cared for by staff members who speak their language.

Hyndman tells of times when high-level delegations have sent their security team to the kitchen to help choose a piece of meat then taste it before the meal is sent up to the room. Extreme requests have included 20 vases of gardenias, particular brands of candles, and precise food requests. Recently one musician required a specific set of ingredients for a shake that included kale, broccoli, lettuce and spirulina ready for when he checked into the hotel.

When asked how the Four Seasons prepares for VIPs, Head Concierge Javier Loureiro responds, "Things change. Needs change. Our job is to respond to the changes."

On call 24 hours a day, a hotel butler is the main point of communication between the delegation and our hotel staff. "During a VIP's visit we get very little sleep. Our job is to take care of immediate needs of the VIP at any time of day." When asked about unique requests, Loureiro adds, "Some guests are interested in fast automobiles. One man wanted the hotel to arrange a choice of four to five ultra-luxury cars parked downstairs for him to choose from."

Suzie Sims, director of diplomatic sales at The Ritz-Carlton, emphasizes the importance of a security plan. The Ritz-Carlton on 22nd Street has two entrances, required by the Secret Service, including a separate diplomatic entrance. Most teams set up cameras in the hallway and a command post.

Anything a Guest Wants, They've Got It

Some Ritz-Carlton guests have been known to reserve a connecting room to be transformed into a gym, lounge, or formal meeting room. The hotel staff has also transformed adjoining rooms into dressing areas for their butler to iron, steam, and arrange extensive wardrobes. Some guests have arrived with such a large number of suitcases delivered by moving truck, that an extra room was reserved to store the luggage.

Recently, Sims was asked by a VIP to help with a birthday surprise for a guest. Hotel staff got to work pre-dawn to quietly fill the suite with hundreds of balloons while the guest was sleeping in the next room. The staff often gets requests for specific TV channels. Sims remarks, "We bring in a cable guy to reconfigure the channels. There is always a way to make it work." If the President of France wants to watch Bravo, they will make sure the giant TV in his suite has Bravo.

The Ritz-Carlton staff represents more than 30 nationalities. "We need to speak their language and be ready to cook their food. I work closely with the ambassador's protocol office to learn how to communicate with each guest properly and be as culturally sensitive as possible. Since we have Ritz-Carlton hotels throughout the world, we reach out to our colleagues in that country for resources and recipes. We can recreate the club lounge experience from another country."

The Ritz-Carlton Suite, the Presidential Suite at the Mandarin Oriental, and The Royal Suite at the Four Seasons were designed to entice the rich and powerful with the highest level of luxury, service, and security. Now that Oprah has wrapped up the 25 year run of her show, we may see her enjoying the posh hotels of Washington D.C. more often, unless she has already reserved the Lincoln bedroom.

Travelodge: Future Hotels Offer Lure of Virtual Sex

According to a report sponsored by the budget hotel chain Travelodge, future hotels will offer technology allowing their clients to make remote digital love to their spouse or partner.

The "Future of Sleep" study, authored by self-proclaimed futurologist Ian Pearson, also hypothesizes that in 2030 "video, audio, smells and tactile experiences produced using our bed or bed linen will play a key role in helping to make our dreams feel real."

Obviously Pearson sees pay-per-view as a thing of the past. He also claims travelers will be seeing the internet through contact lenses and that they will be able to digitally turn their hotels into simulacrums of their bedrooms.

There is no dancing around the fact that this sounds ridiculous, but Apple's introduction of the iCloud this week already means that traveler's digital possessions will likely travel with them. The bigger reach may be concluding that hotels will offer any of these services gratis in 2030 when, in 2011, so many are still charging for the damn wifi.

This news may also be greeted with a certain degree of displeasure by certain travelers who don't mind taking a break from home. Just because you can take it with you doesn't mean you'll want to.

Surprisingly, that picture-perfect movie location, Skopelos, has stayed under the radar. There are still gems like Skopelos hidden all around the globe, if you know where to look.

Our friends at Travel +Leisure have done the requisite digging to find places you can truly unwind, from the rugged Chilean spot that inspired the novel Robinson Crusoe to a tiny island in the Caribbean that was virtually deserted for decades until a luxe resort opened in 2010.

Similar high-end resorts have been popping up across Southeast Asia, where many islands are vying to be the next Phuket. So those looking to get far off the grid head to Con Dao, an archipelago 110 miles off Vietnam's southeastern coast. Sheer granite cliffs border deserted beaches, and a private guide can lead visitors by motorbike to remote spots like the spectacular Dam Tre Bay lagoon.

Travelers looking to commune with nature can also find solitude on Nicaragua's acre-wide Jicaro Island on freshwater Lake Nicaragua. The nine casitas at Jicaro Island Ecolodge were built from storm-felled trees, and all the food is locally sourced; you can sip a passion-fruit-banana cocktail as you sit by the infinity pool.

Prince William, Kate Middleton Charter $3.2 Million Yacht For Sightseeing

It must be nice to be royalty. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, while on their Seychelles honeymoon, have reportedly rented a $3.2 million yacht for sightseeing around the islands.

The dynamic duo, no strangers to water sports (have you seen Kate in a bikini?!), have chartered the Sea Stream, which is said to be the fastest luxury crewed boat in the Seychelles, according to our AOL Travel counterparts in the U.K.

The boat costs around $42,000 a week to hire and comes equipped with jet skis and scuba diving gear. William had said while he was in Australia earlier this year that he wanted to scuba dive on his honeymoon.

The royals dined like, well, royalty while on board, too. They were said to eat sushi, Parma ham and other delicious bites while aboard.

The royal honeymoon is no cheap affair. The villa that the newlyweds are reportedly staying in costs a whopping $6,500 per night.

Spring in Italy's Lake Como (or Lago di Como) is an enchanting time for a visit. The crowds - which clog the roads on the lake's perimeters, and populate the water with boats - have not yet arrived en masse, the weather is gorgeous and hotel discounts are available. I recently tagged on an extra day to a week long stay in Italy, and took the time to decompress at Como's stunning Grand Hotel Tremezzo.
Spring in Italy's Lake Como (or Lago di Como) is an enchanting time for a visit. The crowds - which clog the roads on the lake's perimeters, and populate the water with boats - have not yet arrived en masse, the weather is gorgeous and hotel discounts are available. I recently tagged on an extra day to a week long stay in Italy, and took the time to decompress at Como's stunning Grand Hotel Tremezzo.

It's easy to see why Como maintains such a classy reputation: Palm trees are contrasted with snow-capped peaks for backdrops, historic towns have been preserved along with centuries-old palaces, and golden, pastel and cream-colored villages dot the opposite shores of the lake in most directions. A drive along the winding roads, a ride on a boat, or a trip up the funicular to Brunate all provide endless scenic overlooks and photo ops.

I snapped some photos using - believe it or not - my iPhone camera, and the images reveal that Lake Como really is as tranquil and picturesque as Clooney & co. profess it to be. Click through to see some highlights from a 24-hour escape to one of Europe's most glamorous vacation spots.

Rent Liechtenstein For $70K A Night Through Airbnb

It turns out that the Snoop Dogg was on to something: Last year, the rapper tried to rent out the entire country of Liechtenstein for a music video shoot. Now that idea is coming to the masses.

Geek.com reports that Airbnb, essentially eBay for the travel sector, has partnered with Rent a Village by Xnet (a company that does what Airbnb does on a local level) to provide a lucky traveler with the entire principality of Liechtenstein, which comes with a population of roughly 35,000.

So how does this work exactly?

Visitors can check in pretty much wherever their generous hearts desire: a wine estate owned by the prince, the heart of the Gutenberg Fortress or even the capital city of Vaduz.

As Airbnb says "renting a whole state definitely requires a certain ceremonial flair." Um, yes. True statement.

So what about the nitty-gritty details? The entire country starts at $70,000 a night, and can accommodate up to 900 guests in 500+ bedrooms (making $70K seem like a bargain). The minimum night stay--yes that is part of the deal--is 2 nights.

Do you have to go camping and live off the land for a true eco vacation? That's one way to do green travel, but it's not the only option. Eco-friendly hotels take the guilt out of a luxury vacation, and educational, family-friendly eco adventures offered at these destinations teach you about being green on vacation and at home. These five eco-friendly hotels do way more than just recycle their paper products; they're raising the bar for green travel.

B Ocean, Fort Lauderdale: B Sensitive to the Environment

B Ocean is a brand new oceanfront hotel in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. When B was built in 2010, they gutted the existing hotel building to replace everything with more modern, efficient electrical systems that are above and beyond current environmental standards. The hotel has a full recycling program, and they use recycled materials wherever possible. Visit between October and March to witness sea turtles nesting on the beach in front of the hotel. In fact, sea turtles are a passion point at B Ocean. Each guest room has a plush sea turtle available for adoption - when you take these adorable friends home (look for collector's edition designer plush sea turtles at the gift shop as well), a portion of the proceeds goes to the Sea Turtle Foundation. To see more unique Florida wildlife, B Ocean arranges eco tours of the Everglades, the Florida wetlands that hundreds of animal species call home. Don't forget your camera and keep an eye out for manatee, dolphins, alligators, Florida panthers, wood storks, great herons, ibises, and over 350 more bird species.

Ritz-Carlton Golf & Spa Resort, Rose Hall, Jamaica

Very few golf resorts can call themselves eco-friendly hotels, but the Ritz-Carlton Golf & Spa Resort, Rose Hall, Jamaica, has some of the greenest of greens. This resort was recently awarded Green Globe Certification for its continued environmental conservation efforts. Sustainable efforts at the Ritz-Carlton, Rose Hall are overseen by The Ritz-Carlton Environmental Action Conservation Team (REACT), who educates all departments on environmental practices designed to minimize the hotel's carbon footprint. Green initiatives at the property include utilizing recycled products, increased energy efficiency throughout the resort, environmental education and community outreach, an on-site herb garden used by the culinary department, and environmental and nature programs for kids and families. The Dolphin Program is an excursion for guests to swim with dolphins and get up close with dolphins, stingrays, and sea turtles.

El Conquistador Resort, Fajardo, Puerto Rico

Just minutes away from Puerto Rico's El Yunque Rainforest, El Conquistador and its sister property, Las Casitas Village & Spa, have both competed a comprehensive green overhaul. The properties share an on-site waste water treatment facility, through which all water is filtered and treated. The water is then recycled and used in the lagoons on El Conquistador's Arthur Hills Golf Course, as well as to water the course's greens. As part of their energy conservation initiative, El Conquistador and Las Casitas both utilize natural lighting and solar energy throughout the property, with a/c and electric systems on automatic timers. Walking and hiking trails throughout El Yunque lead to breathtaking waterfalls and plant and animal photo-ops that you won't find anywhere else in the country. Be on the lookout for rare parrots and colorful tree frogs. Entrance to the forest is free, but the US Forest Service offers guided tours for $5 per person every half hour from 10:30 to 2:30, seven days a week.

Eventi - A Kimpton Hotel, New York, NY

The Big Apple isn't exactly a green apple, but some eco-friendly hotels like Eventi are doing their part to make the city more earth-conscious. Eventi is participating in Kimpton Hotels and Restaurants' EarthCare Week, running from April 15-22, 2011. During EarthCare week, Eventi will host a daily Lights Out Power Hour, a candlelit wine hour. Another EarthCare event perfect for Manhattan tourists is the National Eco Step Challenge. The hotel will provide pedometers to all guests, encouraging them to rack up steps to win prizes.

Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua, Maui, Hawaii: Environmental Ambassadors

The second Ritz-Carlton property on our list of eco-friendly hotels, the Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua exemplifies dedication to the natural Hawaiian environment as well as the local culture in all of its operations. Jean-Michel Cousteau's Ambassadors of the Environment programs at the hotel are designed to teach guests of all ages about environmentally friendly living through hands-on experiences with nature. It's impossible not to fall in love with nature when you come so close to the vibrant wildlife in the reef at Kapalua Bay and the Hawaiian rainforest. Sea turtles the size of small cars, sharks, urchins, and fish in every color of the rainbow live in the water just off the hotel's beach, and naturalists are on hand to teach all about safe and friendly coexistence with these wondrous creatures. Like the Rose Hall hotel, the Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua has gardens onsite that provide many of the herbs and fruits used in the hotel's kitchen.

What to Love: The complimentary R U Ready fitness program for kids aged 7-17 fuses a web based experience with outdoor play to sharpen athletic skills needed for baseball, basketball, football, skateboarding, snowboarding and more. Whether you have kids or not, sometimes it's nice to simply get away and be in an atmosphere free of frolicking children. After all, adults need fun just as much as children, right? That's why all-inclusive adults-only resorts exist: to let adults relax and play in the lap of luxury.

Whether you're looking for a romantic getaway or wanting to participate in organized excursions, there's an adult all-inclusive resort for you.

Before booking your accommodations at an all-inclusive adults-only resort, there are a few things to consider.

1. Just because a resort is adults-only doesn't necessarily mean that lewd activity is promoted there.
Don't associate "adult-only" with lewdness. While it's true that some adults-only resorts market themselves as sexual retreats, most are geared towards the romantic and relaxing. Those few all-inclusive adults-only resorts that cater to those seeking more libidinous adventures are almost always clearly marketed as such so as to not shock unsuspecting guests.

2. Understand the "all-inclusive" of all-inclusive adults-only resorts.

The theme throughout the article is the definition of "all-inclusive" varies greatly, depending on perspective. Don't be afraid to contact a representative at a resort you're interested in and ask numerous questions. It may help you keep your expectations realistic. The spa treatment for you and your partner may require extra payment - and a tip.

3. Finding a resort that is both all-inclusive and adults-only can take a little effort.
While many adults-only resorts are also all-inclusive, not all all-inclusive resorts are adults-only. Make sure you do due diligence and verify that a resort is truly an adult all-inclusive resort. What I like in particular with this site is how it clearly shows not only more information about such resorts, but also their category, minimum age, resort type, and star rating. This kind of organized information makes it simple for travelers to find an adults-only all-inclusive resort that meets their needs.

Aside from the previously mentioned CMtravelonline.com, you have several options for discovering good deals on adult all-inclusive resorts. AOL Travel offers regularly updated listings of the best adults-only travel deals. As of this writing, AOL Travel was listing a deal with 20 percent off of a five-star adult-only all-inclusive resort in a Cancun. Beyond that, you could turn to Orbitz. They have a special listing of adults-only vacations, most of them at all-inclusive resorts. And if you're still not sure which resort is right for you, you can always consider a travel agent.
