Cruising remains one of the best values in travel. On most cruises you can enjoy the adventure without paying extra for food, entertainment or most onboard activities. But increasingly, cruise lines have implemented fees that add to the lines' profits -- and threaten to bust your cruise budget. Here are some tips on how to save on your next cruise.

BUY A LESS EXPENSIVE CABIN ON A MORE EXPENSIVE SHIP
Not the other way around. Wherever your cabin is located on the ship, you'll typically have better food and service on a more luxurious line. Note: Make sure all cabins on the ship have access to the same amenities. Some ships have designated dining and lounge for certain cabin classes.

KEEP AN EYE ON THE INTERNET
If you're a do-it-yourself person, it's possible to book a cruise yourself online. Industry experts are divided, though, about whether you'll save money. Cruise lines work to protect their distribution channels and to some extent, are able to prevent discounting. But check cruise line websites frequently for price changes and special deals. Also, check websites that offer last-minute deals and flash sales. Checking these resources also keeps you informed of price changes so that you're a more informed consumer, however you choose to book.

BE FLEXIBLE ON YOUR SAILING DATES
Some departure dates for similar itineraries can be less expensive. Seasonality is a big factor. The best prices for Alaska cruises, for example, are typically early or late in the summer season. In the Mediterranean, prices will typically peak in July and August.

CONSIDER REPOSITIONING CRUISES
They're generally offered when lines move a ship from Europe to the Caribbean, for example, or to and from Alaska. They're usually affordably priced. Search for "repositioning cruises" and find many options.

BE SHORE EXCURSION SAVVY
Some excursions, like touring St. Petersburg, Russia's Hermitage Museum can be once-in-a-lifetime treats. But you can walk around most Alaska and Caribbean port towns on your own and get more from the experience than seeing them from a tour bus window. To explore deeper into the destination, consider going in with other passengers to hire a taxi; you can visit most of the sites included in the shore excursions, but at your own pace. Just remember: If the taxi breaks down, the ship won't wait for you. (If a shore excursion motor coach is delayed, it will.)

CONSULT A CRUISE-EXPERIENCED TRAVEL AGENT
Travel agents can alert you to deals you might not find on your own, and they typically have "preferred" relationships with certain lines, which can mean special perks for you. Among them: early boarding and spending credits. Knowledgeable agents can also help steer you to a cruise that suits your personality and budget. Plus, if something goes wrong, you have an ally.

BE PATIENT WHEN BOOKING SPA TREATMENTS
They're often more expensive onboard than ashore, but there are ways to save. While there's always a sales push when you board, patience can be rewarded. As the cruise progresses, you'll often be bombarded with special deals. And if you don't go ashore on days in port, you can sometimes save at the spa.
The Economist has released something a little less dry - even juicier - than its normal fare: The annual Big Mac index, which compares burger prices around the world.

The burger indices, which the august weekly has been releasing for over twenty years, always spark cocktail party debates between economists about the valuation of various currencies and the legitimacy of using strange indicators (men's underwear is also popular) to determine whether exchange rates are being manipulated. For travelers the results can be felt more concretely.

The taste of home costs too much in Brazil, for instance, but can be grabbed on the cheap in Mexico.

The lovely graphic below, compiled by the good folks over at Credit Sesame, gives a cursory visual guide to Big Mac-Ronomics. Reversion to the mean is as good a reason as any to get to India now.
The hush that falls over those gathered at Hollywood Forever Cemetery isn't just a sign of respect for the dead. On select evenings, it signals that a blockbuster movie screening is beginning. The cemetery movie series is an unexpected-yet-perfect way to pay tribute to legends like Rudolph Valentino and John Huston. "You're literally a few feet from someone who has worked on these movies," says Cinespia series cofounder John Wyatt.

Small city celebrations never devolve into spectacle, but linger instead in charming nostalgia. The holiday lets towns embrace their better selves. New York city can't have a "dunk the mayor" booth because the line would be too long, but Maplewood has one.

Of course, there are more of these towns and traditions that chronicling all of them would be impossible. So here are a few shining examples from the Northeast's buffet of patriotic treats. Anyone looking to make a getaway to a place that makes Norman Rockwell look like a gritty realist should check out these towns.

Bristol, Rhode Island: It's impossible to talk about any Fourth of July celebration - small town or otherwise - without mentioning Bristol. The town is home to the oldest continuous July Fourth celebration in America, a tradition begun in 1785. The festivities begin well before Independence Day, though, with a series of concerts, a carnival, a beauty pageant and more. But, it all culminates in the parade (big number 226 this year) that winds through the town, full of floats entered by residents and businesses, marching bands, ensembles and the like. Planning on visiting Bristol? Heads up: the fireworks are actually on the night of July 3.

Maplewood, New Jersey: This small town lets loose on July Fourth, hosting not only a local parade but a circus - featuring elephants - and a small fair where the mayor is enthroned over the dunk take and local gluttons shovel it away during an ice cream eating contest. At the end of the day, fireworks light up the bunting draped over many of the main street buildings.

Glen Cove, New York: Kids take center stage at Glen Cove's annual July Fourth bicycle parade. What started as a small, informal affair 15 years ago by two residents has blossomed into a town-wide tradition. Last year, more than 200 kids decked out their bikes, wagons, scooters and power wheels in patriotic decor and rode through the downtown area. No fussy floats here! At the end of the route, participants will find a patriotic sing-along and refreshments. Fireworks in Glen Cove will also be on July 3.

Merrimack, New Hampshire: The Fourth of July kicks of early in Merrimack as enthusiastic revelers take to the Sparkler race/walk at 8 a.m. before heading to the Rotary Club's pancake breakfast. The parade kicks off at 2 p.m. from the town commons as children ride their bicycles, wagons and strollers - all suitably decked out in red, white and blue - along the main road. The kids are accompanied by a monster truck, a drum and bugle corps, military vehicles, local business leaders and a single New England Patriot's cheerleader. Though there used to be an Independence Day carnival, it unfortunately got the axe this year as the town tightened its belt. Still, a Patriot's cheerleader!

Massapequa Park, New York: After a worrisome interlude during which the town's fireworks were temporarily canceled, this small, green Long Island hamlet is back on track to celebrate a festive holiday weekend. The town typically hosts a small parade featuring veterans and Little Leaguers walking down centuries-old streets. What's great about the celebration here is that it doesn't aspire to be big, just comfortable.
Japan comes at a premium. According to a study released Wednesday by the research firm Employment Conditions Abroad, four of the most expensive cities in the world are Japanese and Tokyo has defended its title of "Least Affordable Place on Earth."

Three Swiss cities and two Norwegian cities also broke the top ten, with Oslo placing second and the surprisingly costly Luanda, Angola coming in seventh.

The presence of Luanda, a port city crippled by poverty, among the top ten illustrates the hidden price tag that can comes with visiting the developing world: Goods retail for outrageous amounts due to unmet demand. Luanda leads the sorrowful pack of places that are expensive to visit for many of the same reasons that few people want to visit: Caracas, Venezuela, Libreville, Gabon, and Kinshasha, Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Poorly supplied areas aside, the top twenty is dominated by the blonde-haired blue-eyed usual suspects, northern European cities like Copenhagen, Helsinki, and Stockholm, where strong economies give the Euro muscle.

The Telegraph reports that the ECA study brings at least some good news for travelers: Popular destinations on the continent, including Paris, Berlin and Rome, have slipped down the list and some of the least expensive cities actually have a great deal to offer. Mumbai, Chennai, Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi - all increasingly accessible tourist-friendly towns with a lot to offer - remain among the cheapest major cities.

Because accommodation and utilities were not factored into the survey, the results are likely most relevant to budget travelers. A stay in one of the nicest hotels in a cheaper, more dangerous city - let's say the Avari Towers in Karachi, Pakistan - will still run visitors close to $300.

Of course staying in a rougher neighborhood of Karachi might have a hidden cost as well.

Honduras is the in the middle of a massive tourism infrastructure build out, which makes now the time for budget travelers to take advantage of increasing accessibility and still low prices. Though the islands offshore have long been a favorite among divers, the rest of the country is experiencing a tourist surge that could significantly reshape many of its quaint towns and bring up prices.

The Central American country, which is slightly smaller than Ohio, packs a punch, offering Mayan ruins, virgin jungle, and pristine beaches.

As it stands, the U.S. dollar trades for just under 19 Honduran lempira. To put that in more concrete terms: Cocktails cost $1.50. The cocktail lounge? A handful of pleasant small towns dotting the Caribbean coastline.

About 3 hours by air from Texas, Honduras is also convenient and perpetually warm - a little humid perhaps, but its a privilege to whine about such things come winter. The San Pedro Sula airport is a convenient entry for beach goers, who may want to rent a car given the recently paved highways that run across the northern coastline.

Tip: Make sure to look into travel safety tips when visiting Honduras.
Ukraine isn't the first destination to top everybody's list, but it should be. The former Soviet republic is a prime destination for history buffs, outdoorsmen and adventure travelers alike.

The capital city of Kiev, founded in the 5th century, has been overrun and occupied by the the Khazars, Mongolians, the Lithuanians and the Nazis, among others, but still stands proudly today as home to roughly 2.7 million people.

The country has amped up construction ahead of their co-hosting gig (along with their western neighbor, Poland) of the Euro 2010 Football Championships in 2012. Matches will be held in Kiev, Donetsk, and Lviv, and the country has furiously worked at creating a new concourse at the Kiev airport, now to open in 2012, as well as ample hotel rooms for tourists and viewers alike.

Ukraine created its own money, the Hryvnia, in 1996 (1 Hryvnia equals 13 U.S. cents). Meals can cost between $30 and $40 per person in Kiev, with meals going for less in smaller towns that dot the country. Or opt for the far more budget-friendly option of cafeteria-style restaurants, where meals can go for as little as $4. Hotels are another story, with basic rooms starting out at around $100.

Major international carriers such as Delta, Continental, SwissAir, KLM and British Airways all fly with stopovers from New York's JFK airport to Kiev (a quick check shows that flights start around $1,400 with a stopover).
Ireland has always been a popular destination for Americans, many of whom trace their ancestry to the island. Yet there is more on offer here than nostalgia for famines past. For those traveling on a budget, Ireland offers easy access to areas of tremendous natural beauty and an invitation to participate in local events and customs.

2011 has already been an interesting year for travelers (think sleepy air traffic controllers, potential national parks shutdowns and giant holes in airplanes). We asked our Facebook fans where they'll be going this summer, and received a mixed reaction - plenty of enthusiasm and excited travelers, but also some financial worry and international concern sprinkled throughout.

Economic factors aren't playing along in favor of consumers looking for a bargain vacation this summer, as airlines have continued to add on fuel surcharges and baggage fee increases. Gasoline prices in the United States are on the rise as well.

For example, Conrad K. told us on Facebook that his budget won't allow for big travel plans this year: "Staying home - can't afford the gas!!!," he commented.

There are also some destination-specific considerations applicable in the summer of 2011. Repercussions from the disaster in Japan are likely to continue into the summer months, and might restrict some travel plans in Asia.

The political upheavals in North Africa and the Middle East continue to have an effect on summer travel this year as well. While popular destinations (such as Bahrain or the pyramids in Egypt) have claimed that tourism is back to business as usual, a decline in visitors to those regions might not be surprising.

Still, plenty of comments on our Facebook wall reveal readers who are ready to vacation abroad this summer. Debbie H. is excited about her trip to Europe: "Carnival cruise on the magic to Italy and Spain cannot wait!"

Tarcious P. is Caribbean-bound: "DOMINICA nature island of the Caribbean [sic].. Best choice [sic] ever...;)"

Summer is still prime time to get out for family travel, beach vacations, road trips and more. According to our Facebook page, many of you are looking at Hawaii, New York, and Niagara Falls for summer escapes.

What are you planning for the upcoming season? Will you be spending as much money this year on travel as you have in previous years? Are you packing up for an international adventure, or staying stateside? Take a look at our travelers' poll and give us the stats on where you'll be going - and if some of the global and economic events of the past few months will have an impact on your vacation plans into the next season.
Beer and BBQ aside, relaxing with the fam in The Great Outdoors (not the movie with John Candy) is an excellent way to leave everyday life behind. Not everybody knows how to camp though. For some it has been but merely a dream of green and toilets dug in the ground. Dream no more! Read on for our beginners guide to camping

Gear Up Little Trooper
One of the first things to consider when planning a camping trip is what kind of camping equipment to take. Start out with a well-made tent that will be easy to assemble. Well no kidding.

A good one is the Marmot Earlylight tent. Easy to set up, mid-range in cost, and made well so it will last years if its taken care of. Don't use the tent poles as javalins alright?

Water repellent for the tent. Buy it. Pack a sheet and a few blankets - and use the entire sleeping bag to sleep on if the ground is rocky.

A portable propane grill is beneficial but not necessary if the campground has fire pits or grills. Remember a lantern and flashlight for late night trips to the bathroom (hole in the ground?)

For those heading out near a lake, a fishing pole and tackle is a must. Fairly obvious to say, but even seasoned campers have forgotten their poles and regretted it when they smelled freshly cooked fish wafting from a nearby campsite.

For more on what to gear up on, check out our must-have camping gadgets.

Pick a Spot, Pitch Your Tent

Flickr/martinamor

When searching for a camping site, for the love of all things make sure to look for flat ground that does not show signs of water rushing through during rainstorms. Some campgrounds have raised wood platforms for a tent, but they're not everywhere.

Oh yes, don't pitch the tent close to the fire-pit. Sounds silly to suggest, but you really don't want to find yourself on fire in the middle of the night.

Some campgrounds are almost like a family resort, like at a KOA, where there are often swimming pools, activities for kids, and a camp store where you can purchase supplies. Whatever level of comfort you have for being outdoors you can find a campground with camping sites to suit your needs.

Grub

jasonnipolito/flickr

Even for the camping newbs, it is recommended to pack your own food and drinks. While some campgrounds may have a small on-site eatery or restaurants nearby, many campgrounds are isolated in the wilderness and it's good practice to be prepared and even better form to at least attempt to rough it a little bit.

Canned foods won't get as much attention from the local wildlife (bears and such) as would raw meats and fresh foods. Plus you're really not camping unless there's at least one can of baked beans consumed. Just be careful who you share your tent with after dinner.

Hang any non-perishable goods from a tree branch and don't keep them in your tent unless you want to be bear food.

For those looking to camp near a stream or lake, and have packed fishing gear, there's always the option of fresh fish for dinner.

Camping is nothing to feel apprehensive about for you first-timers. So get out there, breathe in fresh air, and embrace the healing powers of nature!
Receiving over 470 million tourists in 2010, Europe continues to be one of the top travel destinations in the world. Yet despite its popularity, many people who don't live near the continent maintain that cheap travel to Europe is simply not possible. It's time to debunk this myth. For knowledgeable travelers interested in budget travel, Europe is a fantastic option.

Before you begin searching for European vacation deals, you'll want to ask "what am I willing and not willing to sacrifice in the name of saving money?" This is an important question. While some have no problem with the idea of camping across Europe, others may refuse to sacrifice a hotel's comfortable bed and private bathroom. Laying out your own ground rules before you plan will help determine the extent of your budget-saving options.

That said, here are some suggestions for cheap travel to Europe:

1. <strike>Mail yourself to a European city.</strike> Ok, maybe not.
2. Take a repositioning cruise. Back in December I mentioned a cheap repositioning cruise from Miami to Barcelona is sailing this coming May for a very reasonable rate. Of course, you'll still have to organize return travel.
3. Look for airfare through specialty agencies and portals. I've been using 1800FlyEurope.com for years and have been very happy with their service. They even have a newsletter that keeps you updated on the latest travel offers. Travelzoo also has an excellent newsletter packed with travel deals, many for Europe. This spring has already seen airlines put Europe on sale, creating some exciting opportunities to travel Europe cheaply.
4. Before you get to your destination, research the public transportation options. In larger cities, buying a long-term (ten-trip, three-day, etc.) pass will save you money.

Of course, getting to your destination is only one aspect of budget travel. Europe is a big continent with numerous types of accommodations. Your options include:

o. hotels
o. hostels
o. condo rentals
o. camping
o. couch surfing

Some of these options are certainly cheaper than others. Arranging to sleep on someone's couch will always be kinder on your budget than renting a condo. That's not to say that condos don't make sense for the savvy traveler. For example, I found a nice one-bedroom condo rental in the heart of Brussels, Belgium for a very reasonable $540 (€380) a week. You could easily pay more than that on a hotel room.

You could also stay at any of the popular youth hostels in Europe as a way to save money. HostelWorld.com has long been one of my favorite portals for finding hostels, featuring a clean interface and helpful reviews by previous travelers. If you want to get a little more rustic and go camping in Greece, for example, then you may want to visit EuroCampings. This site features thousands of campsites across Europe and includes customer ratings and prices, making it an easy and fun option for those wanting to travel Europe on a budget.

Finally, let's not forget to cover cheap eats in Europe. Finding tasty food for cheap can be daunting for some, but it's generally easy to do if you stick to the local cuisine. "Europe is famous for a great variety of street food - all cheap and delicious," says AOL Travel contributor Annemarie Dooling, who mentions the crêpe stands of Paris as an example. As far as finding some of the best budget food options, I still like to use TripAdvisor.com when I don't have a guidebook with me. The one problem I do have with the site is more often than not the mid- to upper-tier options are rated, but the budget options are mostly ignored. The Frankfurt listing for budget food demonstrates this well with only five restaurants listed in the budget price range. Still, there are valuable reviews and suggestions to be found at TripAdvisor, making it easier for you to travel Europe on a budget while enjoying the best food around.
Affordable beach weddings are totally within your reach, if you plan your nuptials to be either hotel-adjacent or DIY on a public beach. Here's how to make them happen.

Hotel-adjacent beach weddings are the best option for busy people. Hotels love to host weddings, as it means income and possibly even a fair amount of guests for them. Both hotels in your area and hotels at popular destination wedding locales are likely to have multiple wedding packages for you to choose from. They may look steep at first, but they often include everything from the officiant to the flowers and the cake. Allowing the hotel to sort out all the details (seating, the permit, an aisle and an altar, for example) will certainly save you time, and time is money. Right? Right.

Furthermore, hotels often offer an indoor-outdoor reception space, catering, and all the other stuff you were dreading to organize.

If you're convinced you can save more by doing it yourself - i.e. your dad is a florist and your mom works in chair rentals - having the ceremony on a public beach may be the best choice for you.

First, choose your favorite local beach. Then check with your local state department to see if a permit is required, because having your wedding busted up by the cops is a major faux pas. If there's a large fee, consider your second favorite beach.

Get a friend to officiate (they can be ordained online these days), make the programs yourself, and avoid big flower costs by using draped fabrics and fasten them tight in case the wind picks up. Less is more: plenty of people have affordable beach weddings by letting the landscape be the decor.

You'll need some family members or friends to show up early and claim your wedding spot, lest your aisle be occupied by sunbathers - and make sure they take a look at the tide schedule, or they may choose a lovely place that quickly disappears. Lastly, be sure to reserve a secondary location just in case the weather has a cruel sense of humor on your big day.

That should get you started on affordable beach weddings.
