Oprah Slept Here: Outrageously Expensive Washington D.C. Hotel Suites (PHOTOS)

During a recent tour of the most exclusive hotel suites in Washington D.C. we learned how hotels prepare for VIP visits from world leaders, CEOs, and influential media moguls. Oprah Winfrey has made many appearances in the capital to visit the first family for the inauguration and to attend the Kennedy Center Honors. Washington D.C. is a city that knows how to welcome the queen of daytime TV, business magnates, and heads of state from around the world. The Mandarin Oriental, The Four Seasons and The Ritz-Carlton offer lavish suites to pamper the powerful people who visit Washington D.C.

Prepping for VIPs: It Takes an Army...Or a Security Detail

When asked how the hotel staff prepares for the arrival of a VIP, Mandarin Oriental General Manager Amanda Hyndman leads her team to understand the specific requirements for each guest. The staff confers with their travel agent or butler to find out how the room should be prepared.

With many guests arriving from around the world, we asked Hyndman how the Mandarin Oriental handles caring for guests who speak so many different languages. The staff at the hotel represents 58 countries and many languages, so they can plan accordingly. Last year delegations from China, Thailand and the Ukraine were all met and cared for by staff members who speak their language.

Hyndman tells of times when high-level delegations have sent their security team to the kitchen to help choose a piece of meat then taste it before the meal is sent up to the room. Extreme requests have included 20 vases of gardenias, particular brands of candles, and precise food requests. Recently one musician required a specific set of ingredients for a shake that included kale, broccoli, lettuce and spirulina ready for when he checked into the hotel.

When asked how the Four Seasons prepares for VIPs, Head Concierge Javier Loureiro responds, "Things change. Needs change. Our job is to respond to the changes."

On call 24 hours a day, a hotel butler is the main point of communication between the delegation and our hotel staff. "During a VIP's visit we get very little sleep. Our job is to take care of immediate needs of the VIP at any time of day." When asked about unique requests, Loureiro adds, "Some guests are interested in fast automobiles. One man wanted the hotel to arrange a choice of four to five ultra-luxury cars parked downstairs for him to choose from."

Suzie Sims, director of diplomatic sales at The Ritz-Carlton, emphasizes the importance of a security plan. The Ritz-Carlton on 22nd Street has two entrances, required by the Secret Service, including a separate diplomatic entrance. Most teams set up cameras in the hallway and a command post.

Anything a Guest Wants, They've Got It

Some Ritz-Carlton guests have been known to reserve a connecting room to be transformed into a gym, lounge, or formal meeting room. The hotel staff has also transformed adjoining rooms into dressing areas for their butler to iron, steam, and arrange extensive wardrobes. Some guests have arrived with such a large number of suitcases delivered by moving truck, that an extra room was reserved to store the luggage.

Recently, Sims was asked by a VIP to help with a birthday surprise for a guest. Hotel staff got to work pre-dawn to quietly fill the suite with hundreds of balloons while the guest was sleeping in the next room. The staff often gets requests for specific TV channels. Sims remarks, "We bring in a cable guy to reconfigure the channels. There is always a way to make it work." If the President of France wants to watch Bravo, they will make sure the giant TV in his suite has Bravo.

The Ritz-Carlton staff represents more than 30 nationalities. "We need to speak their language and be ready to cook their food. I work closely with the ambassador's protocol office to learn how to communicate with each guest properly and be as culturally sensitive as possible. Since we have Ritz-Carlton hotels throughout the world, we reach out to our colleagues in that country for resources and recipes. We can recreate the club lounge experience from another country."

The Ritz-Carlton Suite, the Presidential Suite at the Mandarin Oriental, and The Royal Suite at the Four Seasons were designed to entice the rich and powerful with the highest level of luxury, service, and security. Now that Oprah has wrapped up the 25 year run of her show, we may see her enjoying the posh hotels of Washington D.C. more often, unless she has already reserved the Lincoln bedroom.

JetBlue And Nintendo Bring Gaming (Temporarily) To JFK Airport

Sitting around the airport and waiting for your flight to take off just got a lot more interesting.

From April 22 to May 30, JetBlue is teaming up with Nintendo to offer a grandstand complete with new Nintendo 3DS games.

The system, which launched on March 27th, sold nearly 400,000 units its first week.

The program will be at JetBlue's ever-fun Terminal 5 and will include 3D experiences such as flight simulators, submarine navigation games, Madden NFL and Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars. The consoles are also set up with a customized Mii Maker and to take 3D pictures.

Add in daily prize giveaways and some gamers may consider purposely missing their flight to keep playing.

JetBlue's JFK Terminal has long been a bastion of fun. The Live at T5 concert series has included artists such as Sarah McLachlan, Taylor Swift and James Blunt. On St. Patrick's Day, the airline teamed up with Aer Lingus for a 2-day celebration.

When planning a trip to New York City, consider several important factors for choosing a where to stay. With the expert advice of six of the country's best bartenders, including Richard Boccato of Weather Up in Tribecca and Eric Alperin from The Varnish in Los Angeles, the menu at Forty Four includes classic cocktails, punch bowls, and new original creations. The inspired Reconciliation is made with rye whiskey, Amaro Lucano and house made orgeat. To pair with the drinks the bar menu includes delicious flatbread with duck confit and dried cherries, risotto poppers with sage, and decadent little cheeseburger sandwiches.

Designed by Philippe Starck, rooms at the Royalton feature clean lines and sleek minimalism. On the desk, an iPad is docked ready for guests loaded with maps and other helpful apps. The glossy dark wood headboards on beds with soft white sheets fit well with the minimalist style. In the bathroom, slate showers and round tubs with tiny sparkling tiles add glamour. Rooms range from a comfortable standard to three chic penthouse suites.

Inside the Magic Castle

Few experiences in Los Angeles are more iconic that a visit to the world famous members-only Magic Castle. This Victorian Mansion above Hollywood Boulevard houses the Academy of Magic Arts, an organization devoted to the advancement of magic. For an evening of evening of entertainment and magic, members and their guests must follow the strict dress code: coat and ties for the men, eveningwear for the women. No casual clothing. The castle is 21 and over, with the exception of Sunday brunch which is open to families. The magicians and members believe that following the rules as well classy and respectful behavior helps make an evening at the Magic Castle truly special.

Once inside the castle, bartenders man several bars to order drinks. Visit Irma, the invisible piano playing ghost, and be sure to ask her about the odd painting of a baby over the fireplace. Head upstairs to one of the five dining rooms for dinner. To see the magic shows, explore the castle to find stage magic and grand illusions in the Palace of Mystery, cabaret style magic in the Parlour of Prestidigitation, and sleight of hand close up miracles in the 22 seat Close-Up Gallery. The Magic Castle offers that special experience that brings out the child-like wonder in everyone from the staff and magicians to the members and guests.

On a recent night at the castle, one magician found himself stranded on stage in shredded clothes after a fight with an invisible tiger, while another made a bubble float and bounce in mid air. Magic feats are performed, jokes are told, members of the audience often find themselves being pulled into the act on stage.

For the people who think they can guess how the magicain performs each trick should be sure to catch a show in the Close-Up Gallery. Once inside the audience sits so close, that during tricks by magicians like the award-winning David Minkin, the audience can not stop gasping and shaking their heads in disbelief.

David Minkin has been performing at the castle for many years. According to Minkin, "The Castle is unique in that it is generally considered the home of the world's magic community. It is an extraordinary venue, and every week it features some of the most talented magicians from around the world. It is invitation-only, so you need an invitation from a member or a magician to attend."

When asked about performing in the Close-Up Gallery, Minkin replied, "The Close-Up Gallery is a special room for many reasons. Not only is it the most intimate room at the castle with only 22 seats, but it is also the most sought after place for magicians to perform. It has a rich history in terms of the names of prominent magicians who have performed in it. And this room, with its elegant decor and tiered seating, showcases close-up magic in a very classy way.
In the past, I've enjoyed working there with guys like David Acer, John Carney, and Richard Turner. It's always fun passing each other in the green room and talking about the shows, and the guests, and performing in general."

When asked to divulge how he performs his tricks Minkin, isn't likely to share his secrets, but he is willing to offer advice on how to visit this members-only club. "Write a nice letter or email to a Magic Castle magician letting them know how much it would mean to you to visit. If you demonstrate that you are going to be respectful of the club you have a good chance of getting in."

For accommodations close by, stay at the Magic Castle Hotel. Local attractions include the Walk of Fame, Grauman's Chinese Theatre, Madame Tussaud's Hollywood, Hollywood Bowl, and Yamashiro restaurant which has the some of the most spectacular city views of LA as well as a Thursday open air Farmer's Market in the spring and summer.

In 2009, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of The Magic Castle mansion, Jim Bentley recreated one of Harry Houdini's famous straightjacket escapes while suspended by a crane high over the rooftop. With any luck and a little magic, illusions will be performed at The Magic Castle for the next 100 years and beyond.

The Macallan Distillery Tour in Scotland

In Speyside, the lush countryside leading to The Macallan estate offers idyllic views of green fields, rolling hillsides, flocks of sheep, fields of cows, and picturesque towns. If these images sound like heaven, a trip to Scotland can sure feel that way.

The Macallan Tour: The Property

Pull up to the gates of The Macallan estate and loyal whisky drinkers may get giddy or even a little high. Breathe in a whiff of the angels' share, the whisky that evaporates into the air around the distillery. First, stop near Easter Elchies House to catch a glimpse of the most adorable Highland Cows in the field at The Macallan. With long flowing dark red hair, these animals are real beauties. On the property, barley fields lead to the River Spey, a favorite spot for salmon fishing. See gorgeous vistas at every turn. Both The Experience Tour and The Precious Tour begin at the distillery building.

The Macallan Tour: The Tour

At the entrance of the distillery, an exhibit on making whisky sets the tone. Then on to learn about how whisky is created while peering inside the mash tuns, the giant washbacks, and the gleaming whisky stills. Knowledgable guides talk about the transformation of the precious liquid from new spirit to single malt. The tour guide will also tell the story of the production, maturation, and marrying process as well as the story of how the casks contirbute to the aromas, natural flavors, and color of the whisky.

The Macallan Tour: The Nosing and Tasting Room

Next, it's time to taste the golden goodness. The VIP tour includes a tasting of a range of The Macallan. The nosing and tasting room is next to Master Whisky Maker Bob Dalgarno's lab. If the windows are open, be sure to look inside to see the samples from hundreds of casks that help Bob make sure that every bottle of Macallan has the same taste and natural color.

The Macallan Tour: The Shop

One more highlight, don't miss the gift shop. If you have been admiring some of the staff's black Macallan parkas, you can buy one. Also find, flasks, glasses, food items, and of course bottles of whisky.

The Macallan welcomes visitors for tours and tastings by appointment only. It is recommended to book in advance. Be sure the visit the Speyside Cooperage to see how casks are mended prior to being filled with new make spirit. To book a tour of Speyside, Rabbies offers tours of the area. Speyside is also home to the official Malt Whisky Trail with several other distilleries that offer tours including: Benromach, Gelnfiddich, The Glenlivet, Glen Moray, and more. A visit to Speyside to tour distilleries and see the countryside should be on the top of the list for whisky enthusiasts.

Here are some tips for planning a kid friendly trip that will turn your vacation into a fun experience for everyone.

Since kid friendly vacations shouldn't mean parent torture, some hotels offer discounts to families. Check for special hotel deals.
