It is a persistent misconception that Cuba's rigid socialist government already provides a solid amount of social aid to its citizens, and travel to the island is challenging for those with U.S. passports. There are ways to travel legally to Cuba as a US citizen, and volunteers from the states can attest that voluntourism to Cuba is increasingly popular.

When a girlfriend and I decided to do a road trip from Milan to Cinque Terre and Tuscany, I envisioned rolling hills, wildflowers, and thought the biggest issue would be deciding who needed to be the designated driver between tons of wine tastings. We had heard the common travel folklore that driving in a foreign country - especially Italy - was a nightmare and we were warned against driving in Rome so planned against it. Plus we had seen that clip from "European Vacation" enough times to avoid any traffic circle debacles.

I had also driven a rental car last year in South Africa (where traffic flows on the left side of the road), so I figured Italy couldn't be that tough of a road trip destination.

See me in that picture? I don't look too freaked out, do I? You can barely tell how tightly my knuckles were clenching the steering wheel...

Last year our friends at Gadling posted eight rules for renting a car in a foreign country, but I think there's more to consider than just those pointers. Here are five more tips I took away from renting a car in Italy:

1. Language Barriers Can Make it Harder Than You Think
In Italy, a STOP sign says just that - seriously (and surprisingly). But most of the other important info was conveyed in Italian, much of it abbreviated, which can be hard to interpret from a pocket dictionary while you're cruising down the A7 at 100kmph. If you aren't fluent in the language of the country you'll be driving in, try to study up a few key words (i.e. "exit," "toll," "right" and "left") before you hit the roads.

2. Co-Pilots Make the Ride Much Smoother
Reading Italian street names (embedded onto the sides of buildings, rather than on easily visible signs as in the U.S.), keeping an eye out for gutsy pedestrians darting in the street, or being able to dig some spare euros out to pay a toll at a moment's notice was one of the key advantages during my road trip through Tuscany and Liguria. Solo road trips are more advisable for the super ambitious (or bilingual) types.

3. Situate Yourself
Even with a car equipped with GPS, or with a companion along for the ride to help out with directions, it's still worth it to deeply study a city map and situate yourself before setting out on a journey. In most Italian cities, for example, the historical city centers are off-limits to drivers without special permits. Clueless road trippers caught in one of those zones can face fines. Roads are much more enjoyable in Italy outside of cities, so figuring out the quickest way to get out of those urban hubs is a good idea.

4. Prepare to Pay A LOT More for Gas
Renting a car might seem like an affordable option, especially for travelers who want to see a great deal of the countryside (train tickets can run upwards of €100 or more). But keep in mind that the cost of fuel is high in many foreign countries, especially Europe. In fact, we paid more than €70 on fuel to refill our Mercedes A160 rental, which was on top of the cost of renting, taxes and fees.

5. Keep an Eye on Your Stuff!
Last but not least, I'd like to point out that even in a locked rental car, or even inside a car rental office, it's best to keep close track of your belongings. I speak from experience: my credit cards, purse and digital camera were stolen while I was inside the Hertz rental car office in Florence, leaning over the counter to talk to an agent with my back turned to my luggage. On the bright side, it was a very convenient place to get robbed, what with the security cameras and customer service reps and phones on site. Plus, I did get to speak with a very handsome Italian police officer afterward ... but lesson learned: Somebody might be an experienced traveler, or perhaps a travel writer (ahem); whether in a rental car or the rental car office itself, be sure to safeguard personal items.
With summer travel season just around the corner, AOL Travel wants to know what your plans are, your pet peeves, do you go on cruises or family vacays, or stick around for "staycays" - and how global or economic events might be impacting your summer vacations. Come on now, have your say.

2011 has already been an interesting year for travelers (think sleepy air traffic controllers, potential national parks shutdowns and giant holes in airplanes). We asked our Facebook fans where they'll be going this summer, and received a mixed reaction - plenty of enthusiasm and excited travelers, but also some financial worry and international concern sprinkled throughout.

Economic factors aren't playing along in favor of consumers looking for a bargain vacation this summer, as airlines have continued to add on fuel surcharges and baggage fee increases. Gasoline prices in the United States are on the rise as well.

For example, Conrad K. told us on Facebook that his budget won't allow for big travel plans this year: "Staying home - can't afford the gas!!!," he commented.

There are also some destination-specific considerations applicable in the summer of 2011. Repercussions from the disaster in Japan are likely to continue into the summer months, and might restrict some travel plans in Asia.

The political upheavals in North Africa and the Middle East continue to have an effect on summer travel this year as well. While popular destinations (such as Bahrain or the pyramids in Egypt) have claimed that tourism is back to business as usual, a decline in visitors to those regions might not be surprising.

Still, plenty of comments on our Facebook wall reveal readers who are ready to vacation abroad this summer. Debbie H. is excited about her trip to Europe: "Carnival cruise on the magic to Italy and Spain cannot wait!"

Tarcious P. is Caribbean-bound: "DOMINICA nature island of the Caribbean [sic].. Best choice [sic] ever...;)"

Summer is still prime time to get out for family travel, beach vacations, road trips and more. According to our Facebook page, many of you are looking at Hawaii, New York, and Niagara Falls for summer escapes.

What are you planning for the upcoming season? Will you be spending as much money this year on travel as you have in previous years? Are you packing up for an international adventure, or staying stateside? Take a look at our travelers' poll and give us the stats on where you'll be going - and if some of the global and economic events of the past few months will have an impact on your vacation plans into the next season.
AOL Travel writer David Parker Brown found this video from Nate Bolt, who was able to snap 2,459 photos and condense a 10 and a half hour long flight from San Francisco International Airport to Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport into two minutes.

The video captures the scenery viewable from the right side of an Airbus A340, from takeoff and landing, as well as some rare sights from the 5,500 mile flight path, like Canadian tundra and the Northern Lights.

Air passengers know the drill: before a flight takes off, a request is broadcast on the loudspeaker system with the "please turn off electronic devices until the pilot signals that it is safe to use them" spiel.

Bolt didn't ignore the warning.

According to Bolt's YouTube page, "The photos during take-off and landing are all computer models and totally rendered because I would never use an electronic device during times which the FAA prohibits them. I did get lucky and have a whole row to myself to setup the tripod and gear."

Bolt writes that the photos were shot with multiple cameras: a Canon 5D2, along with a time-lapse controller, and "a 16mm - 35mm, mixed with some iPhone shots."

He requested permission from the Air France staff who were on board in order to set up his equipment and document the ride. Bolt also was fortunate to have some patience from passengers in neighboring seats, who dealt with the clicking of a camera every few seconds.

While it might not be the "real" thing from start to finish, Bolt's efforts make for a catchy clip. It's a reminder of what's going on out there while everyone is snoozing with the airplane shades pulled down, and it's worth a watch:
April is a great time to plan a vacation - in many locations, the weather is mild if not warm, and it isn't yet peak season, so big crowds and high prices are easy to avoid. For some lucky travelers, spring break or the Good Friday/Easter holiday even allows for some real time off to take a trip. But while those occasions do provide the vacation days, it's important to consider that Easter (especially in predominately Catholic countries) can have a big impact on crowds, costs, and travel plans.

As the billboard advertisement and the Banksy art were simultaneously removed, an altercation erupted between the CBS Outdoor crew who were taking it down and employees from Norm's 76, the gas station and car wash below. At that point, a crowd protesting the destruction of the piece had congregated and police were called to the scene.

TMZ reported last night that employees from the gas station had even offered to buy the large piece for $10,000, but were refused. The graffiti was instead crumpled, folded up, and taken off the premises.

The removal of the installation on Sunset Boulevard at North Laurel Ave. comes amid strong Oscar buzz for the British street artist, who generated plenty of attention and a new set of fans with his 2010 documentary "Exit Through the Gift Shop."

The piece in question featured a bizarro Mickey Mouse character hacked on top of a sexy advertisement for The Light Group, a Las Vegas management company. It was located across the street from the Director's Guild of America headquarters, leading some to wonder if the graffiti was a gesture intended for his fellow Academy Award nominees.

A spokesman for The Light Group tells a local television station that CBS outdoor advertising took down the poster without asking.

"We're extremely [expletive]. It's our billboard that got tagged, it's not their billboard. CBS clearly has ZERO appreciation for art," says a spokesman from the company. "We were flattered Banksy tagged on our ad - it was epic," he adds.

In the end, CBS returned the poster to The Light Group. The company has not yet said whether it would put the graffiti art back on public display.

Banksy work has popped up in other Los Angeles locations recently, and fans had been stopping by Norm's 76 on Tuesday and Wednesday after it became clear that the graffiti was his. It's been estimated that the "Livin' the Dream" billboard piece would have been worth six figures, had it not been damaged during the hasty removal.
British tourist James Esbester was located today, after an extensive five day search of Kahurangi National Park (pictured) on the South Island of New Zealand.

When Smith was removed from the plane (after he was already seated), he ranted angrily at the airline: "So, @SouthwestAir, go f**k yourself. I broke no regulation, offered no "safety risk" (what, was I gonna roll on a fellow passenger?).."

Although @SouthwestAir responded directly (and publicly) to Smith during the frenzy, it appeared to be too late to placate the disgruntled star, who claims to this day that he has never been given an official explanation from the airline as to why he was taken off the flight from Oakland to Burbank.
"The @SouthwestAir Diet. How it works: you're publicly shamed into a slimmer figure. Crying the weight right off has never been easier!" he tweeted on February 13, 2010.

But after endless media coverage, plenty of late-night show jokes and wisecracks from Smith himself, there has been a silver lining to the debacle: major weight loss.

12 months after the disagreement, Smith spoke to Joy Behar and admitted that the embarrassment over the flight scenario proved to be a key role in his losing 65 pounds.

"I was in my seat, buckled up, my armrests were down, and they still pulled me off the plane. And because I look like I do, they were like, 'Well, fat people should buy two seats, shouldn't they? And the whole Thin World was like 'Yea they should!'.... and it wasn't even the case. They pulled me off the plane, even though I was fitting in it, for a reason that still, to this day they haven't made clear."

The admission from Smith begs the question - does "air travel shame" sometimes serve as a catalyst for heavier plane passengers to lose weight?

Former flight attendant Beth Blair attests to the power of strapping into airline seats, and how it can influence people to shape up.
"When I was a flight attendant I met a lady who instead of watching the scale, determined her weight loss success by her seat belt extension (she carried her own)," Blair says.

"She traveled frequently and was so embarrassed by her size, especially when on the plane. I was working the flight when she discovered she no longer need the extension (she started hitting the flight attendant call button out of excitement). It was quite an exciting moment."

Neshon Davis, a Cost Accounting Representative at Herbalife International, has also experienced in-flight humiliation and a subsequent weight loss.

"I discovered that I could not fit in the seat comfortably, and then I realized the seatbelt did not fit me; it simply would not go around my waist. I was so embarrassed that I wanted to cry, but I didn't want anyone to know. So I put my sweater over my lap and hoped no one would notice," she says.

"Upon my return home, feeling ashamed of my airplane experience I decided to do something about my weight."

She became involved with Herbalife products, went down in eight clothing sizes, and now even works for the weight loss supplement company.

Although not all air travelers have the same level of caché as Kevin Smith, in his recent television interview with Joy Behar he made it clear that being heavy on an airplane means being judged by those around you.

"Because I was heavier... you know, you're profiled," Smith stated.

"I was just a consumer that a company f-ed with."

And while the debate rages on regarding airline policies and etiquette with regard to overweight passengers, it certainly appears that Smith has made the most of the situation - and is able to laugh it off a little bit too.
Violent clashes near the Thai and Cambodian border continued today over a dispute regarding a World Heritage-designated temple. The artillery fighting, situated in Northern Cambodia in the Dângrêk Mountains, has resulted in several deaths and dozens of injuries on both sides of the border.

The 11th century Preah Vihear temple (pictured below) has reportedly been damaged by the crossfire, which began on Friday. The temple has been a source of tension between Thai nationalists and Cambodians since the 1960s, when courts ruled that Preah Vihear is officially located on Cambodian soil - albeit only several hundred feet from the border with Thailand.

UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova has voiced concern over the fighting. She issued a statement, "calling upon both sides to exercise restraint for the sake of the preservation of the Temple of Preah Vihear and open direct channels of communication at the highest levels to defuse the tension."

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen has said that the recent violence came to a head after an incident in which Cambodian soldiers fired on Thai military members who had crossed the border to locate the body of a fellow Thai soldier. Hun Sen has requested assistance from the United Nations, claiming that action from the U.N. Security Council will be crucial to diffuse the situation.

Thai officials, on the other hand, have been quick to disregard the Cambodian accusations as "propoganda."

Although a cease-fire was reportedly agreed upon on Monday, artillery has continued on a daily basis for four days. According to the AP, at least seven people have died and as many as 70 have been injured in the border clashes.

So far, there have been no warnings issued for travelers in the area, which is not usually heavily touristed.
