Looking for something a little wilder than your normal beach vacation? Maybe it's time to add a splash of sexy to your usual lukewarm adventures. Like, say, at the hottest beach party scene in the Greek Isles. Or a topless pool in Las Vegas. We've picked our favorite beaches and pools perfect for shedding your inhibitions - and more. Just be sure to pack extra sunscreen.

Go: Negril, Jamaica
Less frenetic than its Montego Bay sister, Negril's West End is known for its chill, but fun environment. You can let (relatively) loose at all-inclusives like Breezes or Couples -- the Red Stripe and rum punch flow freely, but over intoxication is frowned upon. Or choose to kick back at a low-key resort like the Rockhouse Hotel, where the reggae is on rotation and the days are unplanned. Either way, there are different degrees of fun to be had, but all still deliver a healthy dose of island flavor.

Avoid: Nassau, Bahamas
The legal age for drinking and gambling is 18 on this island, inspiring reckless behavior for virgin Texas Hold'em players, who may find success with Lady Luck and find themselves flashing newfound cash. Crime rates have risen to record highs in the last few years, with more incidents against tourists than ever before. Increased complaints of muggings have been filed with Bahamian police and the government tourism board has acknowledged the problems. In November of 2009, 29 cruise ship passengers were robbed while on the island, creating an even greater need to exercise caution, even in paradise.

Go: Fort Lauderdale, Florida
This East Coast city was dubbed "Fort Liquordale" until 1985, when the mayor went on ABC's Good Morning America and told college students they were no longer welcome to come tear up the town. Now many areas of Fort Lauderdale draw an upscale crowd due to new hotels like the W Fort Lauderdale, trendy restaurants like Johnny V, and first-rate shopping on Las Olas Boulevard. And while there are still beach-bum spots along the ocean, the vibe has definitely changed for the better.

Avoid: Daytona Beach, Florida
When Fort Lauderdale officials put the kibosh on the decades-long, out-of-control Spring Break scene, the party moved four hours north to Daytona. The city quickly became a hit and has since been a constant newsmaker and cautionary tale, especially last year when six rapes were reported in one week. Plus, there are hotels that advertise rooms for "triples" and "quads," obviously courting a crowd uninterested in decent digs. And anywhere Girls Gone Wild producers like to hang out, we'd suggest bypassing.

Go: Riviera Maya, Mexico
Less than an hour south from Cancun, this newly developed area is beachy keen without trying too hard to compete with its party-hearty neighbor. Great for families and couples on vacation, there are plenty of resorts, both all-inclusive (Azul Sensatori) and a la carte (Fairmont Mayakoba) as well as smaller hotels like the affordable Deseo.

Avoid: Cancun, Mexico
Despite the government push to rid the city of its Spring Break image, accidents aplenty occur in this sunny spot, lending to its continuous bad rep. The legal drinking age in Mexico is 18, which is said to be rarely enforced. No doubt the relaxed rules have led to judgment laps in otherwise trustworthy teens. Cheap tequila is plentiful at debauchery encouraging establishments, which has led to violence. Last year, a 21-year old from New Jersey was beaten into a coma and found by a security guard near his hotel's pool.

Go: Maui, Hawaii
More laid back than Oahu's Waikiki Beach, Maui is an island that attracts a gentler group of travelers, especially in the coastal Kapalua and Lahaina areas. Here people are interested in authentic luaus and restaurants that serve innovative dishes with ingredients from local farms. Whale watching excursions are especially fun this time of year, and those intent on getting their first surf lesson have a wealth of areas to choose from including super laid-back Paia town. The granola crowd will feel at home as will young couples and easy-going families.

Avoid: Las Vegas, Nevada
MTV is celebrating 25 seasons of its Real World reality series by returning to Las Vegas for another show, this time at the Hard Rock Hotel. Coincidentally, the network will also host a 2011 Spring Break event at the Palms. If the televised antics are any measure, where teeny-bikini clad girls and obviously intoxicated gents gyrate on stages, imagine what goes on behind the camera. Those who are old enough to remember the first Real World in 1992 may want to stay away.

Go: Charleston, South Carolina
Myrtle Beach has long commanded (un)wanted attention from the Spring Break crowd, but the intrepid traveler should head to Charleston for a slice of Southern comfort. The pace here is decidedly slower, hijinks aren't tolerated, and the focus is generally on good food and fun. And quiet beaches are just 15 minutes from the historic city. Though the Atlantic Ocean might be too chilly for swimming this time of year, you can still spend the days walking the strands, collecting sand dollars, bike riding, and hanging out in peace. That's what we call a Spring Break.

Avoid: South Padre Island, Texas
Though relatively calm during other parts of the year, Spring Break seems to dramatically change SPI's mood. The city has issued repeat warnings to college students about the dangers of binge drinking (a study published by the Journal of American College Health reported that during spring break, the average male reported drinking 18 drinks per day and the average woman consumed 10). In 2010, a local resident flagged down police when a young drunk man entered her house while her two children were still sleeping in their beds. Another issue is the proximity to the drug-plagued Mexican border towns like Matamoros. A U.S. State Department warning discourages travel to those areas, which have been in the news for gang related violence, which has affected innocent bystanders.
Are you still "staycationing" or calling a long weekend at your inlaws' house a "getaway?" There's a world of decadence waiting outside your door, from renting private celebrity homes to commanding glitzy yachts. That is, if you can afford their six-figure price tags. The pampering at these ten destinations is top-class and the perks are (100) grand, but don't despair if they're out of reach. Today's guests mimic the days when previous visitors like Queen Victoria enjoyed sketching and painting the grounds and mountains. Spend your days fishing on lochs, clay shooting, hiking, or cruising the famous Loch Ness before returning to the castle for a steaming cup of tea or maybe a wee dram of whisky. Even more mind-blowing is the new 20-Hand Massage -- imagine ten therapists massaging you and your friend simultaneously from head to toe! The next day, go on a private helicopter island tour and later that night, relax on a private sunset catamaran cruise.
The island of St. Barths is practically synonymous with the word "glam." During the winter months, the Hollywood gliterrati come to the Caribbean paradise to pick up a tan, and the heavy tab on staying in spiffy spots like the 16,000 square-foot Villa Rockstar at theEden Rock hotel. Cameron Diaz, Derek Jeter, and Tom Hanks have all stayed at the hotel, but the beachside villa's guest roster is a bit more hush-hush, though there have been whispers of Usher and the Rolling Stones stopping by. Perhaps they wanted to get a glimpse at the villas four suites and two guest cabins, or the bathroom tiled in 100 percent pure white gold. It's more likely that they were drawn to the on-site recording studio. While we like the idea of becoming the next American Idol, the studio comes with an extra charge. So, for our $100,000, we'll have to make do with the butler, private pool, and Jacuzzi.

Ah, the dog days of August. Where has the time gone? That getaway you promised yourself? Didn't happen. That long weekend of lolling around in the sun? Perhaps you spent it catching up on work instead. Thankfully there are a few weeks left to get in a last summer-beach fling before the back-to-school, back-to-work grind starts up. August is a peak vacation month for many U.S. beach areas, and that can mean that premium rates are in effect. But we've found 10 under-the-radar hotels and resorts around the country that are offering rooms for less than $150 a night that are right beside the strand.

But you better book fast. Seems like there are lots of procrastinators out there -- not that we're pointing any fingers.
Dating back to 1921, the Georgianne is an intimate inn that's as steeped in history as a glass of ice-cold sweet tea. Which, by the way, is the perfect thing to sip after a leisurely bike ride along the three-mile-long beach. Life on this barrier island, just 30 minutes from Savannah, remains tranquil, unlike other popular southern beach towns. Although there are plenty of motels and B&B's to choose from, the Georgianne is newly renovated and still retains its idyllic charm.
This small but much-loved hotel commands big attention on Mustang Island. The rep is built from visitors who came to check out "the" hangout spot in the island's main town and end up becoming repeat guests. It's nothing fancy, for sure, but the basic rooms are the perfect place to relax after a long day on the sand, or after taking part in the rollicking scene at the beach bar.
Hotels on Maui are traditionally pretty pricey, which makes this quiet, condo-style property located between the Kaanapali and Kapalua resort areas in West Maui a gem. In addition to its roomy quarters, the washer/dryers and full-size kitchens are perfect for families (and a great way to keep meal costs down). To get the full effect of the location, book an ocean view room with a balcony. There you can see the neighboring island of Molokai on a clear day and bask in the true spirit of the island.
Gloria Estefan and her husband own this boutique hotel less than three hours from the glitz and glam of Miami. While emulating a distinct Miami Beach look with its porthole windows and Art Deco shapes, the vibe around these parts is more laid-back -- great for those not interested in the city scene. The hotel's restaurant, Oriente, serves delicious Cuban cuisine as a homage to its owners' roots. And while this generally quiet town isn't known for its thumping night scene, the resort has a DJ spinning poolside during the day and then moves him inside at night, turning the place into a nightclub. Naturally, Estefan's hits are on heavy rotation.
And millions of dollars in renovations means that Bally's, one of the largest in the city with 1,750 rooms, is now a hot spot getaway. Normally this super sleek oceanfront resort just above the bustle of South Beach would cost a grip during the winter high season. But, it's a bargain for those who don't mind the steamy August through October weather. Rooms are a great size and mimic the colors of the sea scene outside with their brown, cream, and turquoise touches. And they come kitted with an iPod docking station, flat screen TV, and free WiFi. Outside, take a refreshing dip in the bathwater-warm ocean, lounge by the pool, or enjoy a potent Miami Vice at the Tiki Bar. But if you're like us, you'll find yourself relaxing atop an opium bed in one of the free cabanas -- a true rarity in these parts.
www.karismahotels.com
This resort calls itself a "gourmet all-inclusive" and it's easy to see why. Not only are all your meals and drinks included, there's 24-hour room service should you care for a midnight snack, and the six restaurants have a la carte options instead of just one bland buffet. There's something to do for every age range -- the toy-stocked kids club appeals to tykes under five and rock climbing and trampolining are at the Breeze Teen Club for hard-to-please adolescents. Regroup together on the beach beds roomy enough for a family of four and then spread out at night inside a roomy ocean-view suite. The all-inclusive price is right, $152 per adult, per night, with children under age 13 staying, playing and eating free. Bonus: adults get a $100 credit towards a 50-minute massage at the Vassa spa.
www.omnihotels.com
Less than three hours from Boston and Portland, Maine, this 365-room historic haven has been a getaway for presidents and celebrities since 1902. People flock here looking for good old-fashioned R&R due to its low-key location near the White Mountain National Forest. Kids are VIPs here and receive a free backpack at check-in with a flashlight and a canteen. Plus, milk and cookies await in the room the first night. Tons of free fun is at your fingertips like the Barn Buddies Equestrian Program, where kids help groom Zeus, the resort's 3,100-pound Belgian Draft horse. Adrenaline-inducing hikes and moose tracking earn the reward of make-your-own root beer floats and ice cream sundaes. And in the evening, everyone can relax around the campfire, S'mores kit in hand, ready for a night of storytelling. The Omni's Fun-4-Summer package begins at $139 per night for a deluxe room and includes free breakfast for children under 12. Plus the fourth night is free with a three-night booking.
Lots of resorts tout themselves as "all-inclusive," then charge extra for everything from an afternoon on the tennis court to after-dinner drinks. So we went on the hunt and found 10 resorts where you can lock your cash away and never have to see a bill. All of the prices listed include meals, drinks from soda to liquor, tax, and gratuities. Even better: Prices at these one-rate-for-all resorts go as low as $87 per person, per night, plus some throw in usually pricey extras like cooking lessons and spa treatments.

Club Med is considered the first all-inclusive chain in the world, and this Florida hotel 30 minutes from West Palm Beach is one of the few genuinely wallet-free resorts in the States. Guests spend days sunning by the five pools or hopping over to the public beach (20 minutes away). And don't forget to take a turn on the flying trapeze (a Club Med signature). When you need to refuel, the resort has two restaurants to choose from, plus a full bar.

If you are looking for something more intimate than a sprawling, oversized resort but still want a cash-free trip, book the Grand Pineapple. The low-key 65-room boutique property on Negril's famous Seven Mile Beach has one restaurant and one freshwater pool and is tailor made for couples looking to get away from it all without breaking bank. The rooms are housed in 14 pastel cottages and have either beach or garden views (some even have balconies or terraces) and are pretty basic. But who needs fancy with prices like these?

The D.R. is known for its cheap sleeps, and this one-price-includes-all escape directly on Bavaro Beach is no exception. When not playing in the ocean's turquoise-blue waters, guests fill up on Caribbean, Mexican and steakhouse cuisine and top-shelf drinks at the five restaurants. At night, the stage at La Pergola is alive with a band playing merengue and salsa, so you can put the steps you learned at the free classes to good use. The only time you'll need cash is at the casino, but with all the money you've saved you won't mind a bit if lady luck isn't on your side.

St. Lucia's quiet south coast is away from the tourist track, but there is plenty to do right on the resort's 85 acres. And unlike many of this island's hotels, which are a hair-raising drive up and through the island's mountainous terrain, Coconut Bay is only minutes (and a free transfer) from the main Hewanorra airport. Unless you book island excursions, most of your vacation will be spent playing in the three swimming pools, exploring the hiking trail or bellying up to the swim-up bar. The Atlantic Ocean is at your feet, but it's is pretty rollicking so you are better of heading to the onsite water park's lazy river and waterslides. Evening brings Caribbean nights and a live steeplan band.

There aren't a ton of activities at this small cottage hotel, so go here if the most strenuous thing you want to do all day is lifting your arm to signal for another cocktail. And that's just the way they like it on Antigua, which claims to have 365 beaches (one for each day of the year). If you are feeling adventurous, take a drive past mango groves and old sugar mills to the historic Nelson's Dockyard National Park and museum. The village-like area's marina is rife with dinghies and tall ships and shops sell naval memorabilia. Back at the resort you can raise your glass at sunset and watch as another boat sails by.

The Spice Island is pretty well seasoned when it comes to providing an upscale vacation experience and LaSource offers a great deal. The rate is a bit higher than others on this list, but that's because it includes extras not seen anywhere else. Book a tee time at the nine-hole golf course for no extra charge, plus you can head to the spa for a gratis treatment every full day of your stay The water sports available are impressive as well. Certified guests can take a free SCUBA dive per day (non-certified can do a "try dive") and even waterskiing is on the oversized activities menu. Gourmet meals are served at the four dining spots and premium-liquor is poured from the happy-go-lucky barkeeps.

This resort is on one of the prettiest beaches in the Caribbean, where the sand is blindingly white and trade winds provide the breeze pushing dozens of windsurfers around in the sea. Tamarijn's oceanfront rooms are island casual and have balconies or patios, but most guests at this family-friendly spot spend their time outside in the sun (be sure to pack lots of sunscreen). Nine restaurants serve everything from burgers to grilled Mahi Mahi and glasses stay full for as long as you want. When the sun sets, take the free shuttle to the nearby Alhambra Casino or head over to Tamarijn's sister property, the Divi, to dance the night away. On an island that's notoriously pricey due to its hurricane-free position, this is a bargain and even more of a steal if you are bringing the kids. Two children 17 and under can stay, play and eat free, bringing the price down to $82 per person for a family of four.

The Real Deal: Ten All-Inclusive Summer Resorts

There are few swimmable beaches in this part of Mexico due to the Sea of Cortez's undertows, but luckily the Meliá has a piece of coastal property that's safe for snorkeling. Still, pool culture reigns supreme and the recently remodeled resort boasts the area's largest (there's also a 10-person oceanfront Jacuzzi). When you are ready to get out of the water, take a turn on the rock climbing wall or the beach zip-line. There are also four restaurants and three bars serving unlimited guacamole and margaritas, so you'll never go hungry or thirsty.

Eco-friendly doesn't mean spare at the Paradisus, a 2,400-acre luxury resort area in the middle of a nature preserve. All rooms are suites and come with a stocked mini bar in case you don't get your fill at the nine restaurants serving everything from Asian to Mexican cuisine. Tennis, kayaking, and even sushi-making classes are among the on-site activities, and the beach is a short walk away. The resort is family-friendly and has a kids club, in-room game consoles, plus there's a milk-and-cookies turndown service. If you are leaving the kids at home, book the adults-only Royal Service section. This is a hotel within the resort and very adult with its own butlers, restaurant, and a private pool with sexy Bali beds.

Fashion Designer Hotels

Some of the world's most famous designers have added hotelier to their résumé. And they aren't just slapping their name on the door. They are hands on, designing everything from the bedding to the bathrobes to the bellman's uniforms themselves. The properties are an extension of what the designers send down the runways, so fashion devotees know exactly what to expect. Rooms at Giorgio Armani's brand-new hotel in Dubai are sleek and classic, Christian Lacroix fills his Parisian hotels with bright patterns and trompe l'oeil, while Donatella Versace's Australian resort has her signature gold accents and over-the-top opulence. But you don't have to subscribe to Vogue to appreciate high design at these hotels - form never impedes on function. And while the price at times compares with haute couture hostelry, there are some that offer rates that are more ready-to-wear.

Fashion Designer Hotels

This June, ten rooms designed by the legendary Diane von Furstenberg will be unveiled at this classic British institution. This is DVF's first interior design project, but she was the natural choice for the hotel's renovation as she's been a frequent guest since the 70s (her 2009 cruise collection was also based on the hotel's Art Deco design). "Claridge's is the most glamorous hotel in the world. I regard it as my home away from home," she's said. Now, in addition to her famous jersey wrap dress, she'll be known for using bold prints and colors to put a 21st century spin on the iconic Mayfair hotel. www.claridges.co.uk

Bold Donatella Versace was a pioneer in designer-owned hotels when she opened her first resort in 2000. Fronting a powder-white 18-mile long beach on Australia's Gold Coast, the palatial property is dedicated to Italian splendor. Everything gleams from the cutlery to the marble flooring. Hallways showcase the late Gianni Versace's artwork while rooms are decorated in rich colors. The onsite Versace boutique also means easy access to the label's latest designs. After gawking at the opulence, guests can play golf or take a private yacht cruise, while drinking in the fabulous life. The designer's second property, Palazzo Versace Dubai, will open in 2011 in a 1.8 million square-foot palace. www.palazzoversace.com

Scotland isn't quite where we'd expect an Italian fashion house to open its first property, but there's no question why Missoni entered into the hotel game. Their Missoni Home label is full of funky fabrics and furnishings and the signature sassy stripes and waves make many appearances at this hotel in the city's Old Town. Black and white patterns are balanced with bright turquoise, yellow and green in the bedroom while bathrooms are stocked with the label's robes and towels (all available for purchase). Rooms also have floor-to-ceiling windows offering view of the historic Royal Mile and Edinburgh Castle. Free mini-bar treats, WiFi and breakfast make the reasonable rates an even better deal. www.hotelmissoni.com

It's no surprise that Oscar de la Renta was asked to design 15 deluxe villas at the 15,000-acre Puntacana Resort & Club. He's a DR native and long-time resident of this beach town. The exclusive hotel-within-a-hotel has a pool area and restaurant open only to villa guests and the legendary designer's impeccable taste is evident in the simple but sophisticated rooms. Meaning you won't find the garish tropical prints found at other Caribbean hotels. Instead, the suites are designed in soothing whites, beiges and yellows that do not compete with the views of the sparking Caribbean Sea. www.puntacana.com

Christian Lacroix already showcases his eccentric style at Paris' Hotel Bellechasse and Hotel Petit Moulin, and now his over-the-top imagination is on display at his third property, the Hotel Notre Dame. The 26-room guesthouse is in a 400-year old building near the River Seine that is just steps away from the Notre Dame. The rainbow palette of the rooms almost overshadows the front-and-center views of the Gothic cathedral. Playful themes like "The Angels," "Divine Garden," and "Spouses" feature exposed beams, textured "cowhide" wallpaper and animal prints. There's even a wall-to-wall carpet that resembles medieval paving stones. And while some rooms are outright outlandish, the rates, especially during the low and shoulder tourist season, are blissfully not. www.hotelnotredameparis.com

Beloved fashion designer Todd Oldham put his signature touch on everything from the pillows to the bathrobes in this Art Deco building. After a complete renovation, Oldham and a partner reopened the space in 1998 as The Tiffany Hotel, its original name. While the moniker has changed, Tiffany blue touches remain on hand-blown glass lamps, satin-ribboned pillows and airbrushed tiles. The Hotel also opened an oceanfront annex in January 2010 in a former apartment building right on Ocean Drive. For these rooms Oldham left the blue outside in the ocean and designed the interiors with deep reds and corals. www.thehotelofsouthbeach.com

Creative Director Rossella Jardini of the Italian design house Moschino stayed close to home and transformed a grand 1840's neoclassical train station in the heart of Milan into a whimsical boutique hotel. Features of the original 19th century architecture remain, including the wide windows that frame city views in The Prestige rooms. The 65 cheeky rooms include suites like "Life is a Bed of Roses" with its scarlet red rose petals blanketing the light fixtures and bedspread and the "Sleeping In a Ballgown" room featuring a bed designed with a huge, regal dress flowing atop it. Even the hotel's Clandestino Milano restaurant is unique. Be sure to order the Italian sushi. www.maisonmoschino.com

Haute hat designer and Galway native Philip Treacy recently infused his signature avant-garde flair into this modern hotel. The guestrooms are outfitted with Louis XVI-style chairs and Venetian-plaster moldings, plus special touches like conch-shell pillows. A jewel-toned catwalk-like carpet leads to lounges such as the Grand Salon where a thousand red Swarovski crystals accent the Cocktail Bar. Andy Warhol's pink camouflage print chairs accent the Ladies Lounge, while the Gentlemens Lounge sports blue walls and purple velvet sofas as textured as the designer's millinery creations. www.theghotel.ie

The highly anticipated opening of Armani's first hotel, delayed several times, is finally here with a grand opening on April 22. Located on 37 floors of the Burj Khalifa tower, the world's tallest building, the 160-rooms were designed by Giorgio Armani himself. Expect them to a muted color palette, minimal furnishings and lots of touches from the Armani Casa collection. The hotel also houses eight restaurants, the Privéa nightclub and the world's first in-hotel Armani Spa. Shopping is a big part of the Armani experience, of course, and you can pick up gourmet chocolates from the Dolci sweet shop, buds at the Fiori floral shop, and naturally some of Giorgio's latest fashions. A second hotel is also scheduled to open later this year in Milan. www.armanihotels.com

This 200-acre eco-park one hour south of Cancun is said to be "part Disney, part National Geographic adventure." The natural playground transports you back in time to the mysterious Mayan world and gives you a glimpse of how they worked and played. It's a surreal experience to snorkel through tunnels in the 1,600 foot underground river, swim with dolphins, snuba and sea trek, all amidst genuine ruins. There are also plenty of chances to see animals in their natural habitat, including the jaguars living on the aptly named Jaguar Island that you can view through telescopes. When night falls there are shows with traditional dancing, songs, and an ancient Mayan "basketball" game. www.xcaret.com

Lego's first U.S. park is thirty minutes north of San Diego and is constructed mostly out of, yes, Lego blocks. There are more than 50 rides, shows and interactive attractions involving pirates, castles, and even Egyptian temples. The best part is that the 2010 season kicks off in June with a new five-acre water park. Cool features include the Build-A-Raft River where you customize your own raft made of soft LEGO bricks before floating down a lazy river and the family raft slide that's 11-feet wide and 300-feet long. www.legoland.com

Racing fanatics will love the Formula One park when it opens this year in Dubai, where they can channel their inner Jeff Gordon or Danica Patrick on one of the two dozen rides. Less than an hour away in Abu Dhabi, Ferrari World (which also opens later this year) will have a GT Rollercoaster that pits two F430 Spider drivers against each other on separate tracks. Intended to simulate real racing conditions, speeds will reach 60mph, which might be child's play compared to the F1 rollercoaster, already being dubbed the fastest in the world at a mind blowing 125mph. www.f1x.ae; www.ferrariworldabudhabi.com

No matter what your religious beliefs are you will be intrigued by this Buddhist-centered theme park that goes all out. It opens with a gigantic Buddhist sage sculpture that rises 12 stories above a swimming pool, flanked with waterfalls gushing from the beard. The mouth of a giant golden dragon leads to a neon shrine while a boat ride guides visitors through Naraka, Buddhism's version of Hell. But it's not all that serious: bumper cars, a Ferris wheel, and the Tien Dong Beach man-made beach are the park's more secular pursuits. www.suoitien.com

At first glance, this park is merely a 19th century Adirondack camping experience with quaint exposed wooden beams and a dramatic floor-to-ceiling fireplace, but the 38,000 square-foot White Water Bay indoor water park brings it squarely into the 21st century. While most water parks are slaves to the weather (especially in the Northeast), this one is open year-round and maintains a toasty 80-degree temperature, perfect for slipping into your bathing suit and going white water rafting and body boarding. You won't be able to pull the kids away from the multi-level Tall Timbers Treehouse with its 160 interactive elements, like a giant wooden bucket that spills water onto unsuspecting guests below. www.sixflagsgreatescapelodge.com

Techies and sci-fi lovers need to put this out-of-this-world adventure at the top of their list. Dedicated to the power of the imagination, the huge action-packed park features several IMAX-on-steroids experiences. "Arthur, The 4D Adventure" is the newest creation made with film director Luc Besson (The Fifth Element, The Transporter) that thrusts you into the make-believe world of the Minimoys and a race against time. Other must-dos are "The Future is Wild", a virtual reality interactive safari using expedition vehicles, binoculars and a sensory bracelet. "Cosmic Collisions" is an awesome 3D journey through time and space and "Fly Me to the Moon" recreates the incredible adventure of the Apollo 11 flight. The sites aren't all virtual, though. Go inside La Gyrotour, the 148-foot spiraling observatory, for a 360° view of the entire park and the rolling hills of the surrounding French countryside. www.uk.futuroscope.com

Hello Kitty and friends have captured the hearts of children and adults since 1974, so why shouldn't there be a theme park dedicated to "Kitty-chan"? The most faithful fans make the trek to Kyushu island in southern Japan to pay homage and experience rides like the Time Machine of Dreams that involves 3-D and scented seats. The Boat Ride reminds guests it's a (not-so-small) Japanese world after all plus there's a carousel, Ferris wheel, and tea-cup ride all made from characters like My Melody and Keroppi (not to mention parades, musicals and the Kitty Castle). And of course, there's shopping galore to stock up your toys...er, collection. www.sanrio.co.jp

This aquarium like no other, in northern Australia, is home to seven saltwater crocodiles, known as "salties," that weigh up to 2,000 pounds. You can get up close to the crocs by petting the babies, helping with feedings, or swimming next to juveniles (a glass window separates you). But the Cage of Death is the main attraction. The 9-foot tall acrylic box can hold two people and is submerged into one of the four croc tanks for an encounter that's been described as the ultimate adrenaline rush. There are also plenty of exhibits for those who prefer to stay dry, including the chance to meet resident movie star Burt. The infamous croc nearly made Linda Koslowski's character lunch in the 1986 movie, "Crocodile Dundee." www.crocosauruscove.com

There's not one but four of these theme parks, devoted to those who wear Timberlands for both style and function and think Caterpillars are backhoes, not insects. Lovers of all things rugged can choose between the parks in Kent, Devon, Durham and Yorkshire (that's the newest and biggest) that are owned by the UK's largest excavating company. Make like Bob the Builder and jump onto giant diggers and backhoe rides made from converted heavy machinery or take a turn on the Spindizzy -- a modified Tilt-a-Whirl where you sit in the bucket of a giant excavator and get tossed about. New for this season are scale model Landrovers that kids can drive around a grass course. www.diggerland.com

If you thought it was impossible to find an affordable beach resort on notoriously pricey Maui, thing again. Rooms at this 11-acre resort are decorated in just-kitschy-enough Hawaiian prints, and if that's not enough to set the mood you can attend the hotel's free daily Hawaiian cultural programs. Guests of all ages can have a blast studying ukulele playing, hula dancing, pineapple cutting and lei making. Plus every sunset brings the blowing of the conch shell, signaling the start of the nightly hula show showcasing the graceful art form that made Hawaii famous.
Does it get any more retro than spending the night in a vintage Airstream trailer? And even better, one parked steps away from sandy dunes and the Pacific Ocean? This Airstream International CCD 28 (yes, the same silver bullet that Matthew McConaughey drives) has simple, clean décor and sleeps up to six people. It's not exactly rouging it: there is a full kitchen, an LCD TV with surround sound, and air conditioning. But we bet you'll spend most of your time lounging on one of the beach chairs and splashing around in the ocean. From $149 per night; www.hotelairstream.com

The key to this restored 36-room grand hotel on Boston's North Shore is its poetic history -- literally -- as Ralph Waldo Emerson was the New England inn's most famous guest in the early 1900s. Whether you book a romantic balconied suite or a family-friendly rental cottage, you'll have such awesome views of the Atlantic Ocean that you may be inspired to break out the old journal and let the prose flow as gently as the sea. From $179 per night; www.emersoninnbythesea.com

Quite different than the mega-resorts that line the cliffs of Negril, these multi-colored cottages with whimsical names like "Tiki Tiki" were made for low-key travelers who embrace the country's laid-back vibe. The place is awash with funky accoutrements you wouldn't expect in a West Indian setting like minaret-shaped window, domes, Mayan-inspired weavings, and glass bottles embedded in plaster walls. This spirit of adventure comes thanks to the hotel's creator, theatre-set designer Sally Henzell. And to encourage "stress free living", Jake's is blissfully without TVs or phones.
Surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, Nova Scotia offers a coastal experience for a fraction of the price of a stay in Cape Cod. The White Point Beach Resort, built in 1928 as a private hunting and fishing lodge, is a family-friendly playground with two lakes, a boat house for canoeing and paddle boats, over half a mile of white sand beach, and a nine-hole golf course. You can embrace the fun summer-camp atmosphere even more when the sun goes down and the bonfire is lit for marshmallow roasting. Don't blame us if you are inspired to sneak off and short sheet the bed. From $99 per night; www.whitepoint.com

Not only does the hotel publicly display four volumes of the National Audubon Society's Birds of America, but it also hosts an impressive flock of bird related art, including work by Grainger McKoy, Gunter Granget, and John James Audubon himself. For an up-close-and-personal wildlife experience, the 3,400-acre Pine Island Audubon Sanctuary is practically next door. Rent a kayak off the Sanderling's dock and witness hundreds of varieties of birds that call the sanctuary home. You might even catch a glimpse of river otters, bobcats, or even red wolves. Just be back in time for dinner, served in a restored 1899 United States Lifesaving Station.
This beachfront casino in Gulfport boasts views of the baby-blue water of the Gulf of Mexico that can't be beat. The 560-room hotel and its 83,000-square-foot casino are also the biggest around, so of course they brought in one of the biggest chef personalities in the country. Emeril Lagasse opened the Gulf Coast Fish House, the only eatery in Mississippi featuring his legendary coastal-Creole cuisine, to pay tribute to his wife's birthplace.
There are many gems along the long road from Miami that winds down through the Florida Keys. But Hawk's Cay, smack dab in the middle of the stretch, is the only one in the U.S. with an on-site dolphin research facility and educational programs. You can feed and even swim with the resort's bottlenose dolphins and learn about the mammals without ever feeling like you're stuck in a dreary science class. The family-centric resort goes out of its way to tend to little tykes and grownups can drop the kids off at Camp Hawk and escape to the serene, adults-only pool.
Heading south-of-the-border usually means tacos, guacamole, an abundance of salt-rimmed margarita glasses and morning-after regret. But those looking for a healthful, blissful vacation without all the excess of party cities like Cancun and Los Cabos will love the chill, barefoot-in-the-sand vibe of this tiny wellness resort. Vegetarian cuisine is always on the menu, but seafood is naturally abundant as well. The resort has 45 thatch-roof cabanas directly on the beach and when you rise and greet the day sans hangover you'll be ready to tackle classes inside the open-air yoga pavilions. It's been a busy season at this Wildlife Conservation Society park, where you can see tots of all sizes-from sea lions to big cats-this spring and summer. Now on exhibit in the Congo Gorilla Forest area is a colorful and chatty baby Wolf's Guenon monkey that was born in December 2009 to parents Jordan and Gigi. Also be sure to check out the colony of teeny Kihansi Spray Toads that debuted in February. The reptile was almost made extinct when a recent dam was built in Tanzania, but thankfully, the colony that moved to the zoo is thriving. You may need to bring a magnifying glass-the newborn toads are smaller than the head of a Q-tip.
At 2 a.m. on Valentine's Day, the San Diego Zoo's 13-member African elephant herd announced the arrival of a newborn male calf with triumphant trumpeting that could be heard all around the park. The baby elephant isn't the only new addition: A baby Malayan tapir named Tembikai is also a part of the family at the San Diego Zoo. The adorable snouted mammal, whose name means watermelon in Malay, weighed 13 pounds at birth. Mom and baby will finally meet the public this spring.
It was a happy day on March 1 when a new baby bonobo ape entered the world (staff and volunteers kept a respectful distance but monitored the event via surveillance camera). The little tyke, the fourth child of mother Susie, is the 11th offspring since the zoo received its first bonobos in 1990. Fifteen of the country's 85 live at this zoo, which participates in the Species Survival Plan for the rare and endangered ape, which shares more than 98% of the same DNA as humans.
Andean bear cubs don't leave the den until they are three months old, so the twins born here in January will make their long-awaited public debut in May or June. Newborn cubs weigh only up to 18 ounces at birth, and are usually hairless, toothless, and blind. At four-to-six weeks of age they finally open their eyes and begin taking steps. Anxious zoo-goers awaiting the chance to sneak a peek at the adorable duo don't have to wait that long-the zoo has added a special bear web camera to record their antics.
Three rare golden-red maned wolf pups-brothers Santiago and Diego, along with sister Cayenne-were born on Christmas Eve 2009 at this Denver institution, marking the first time since 1985 that the zoo has heard the pitter-patter of little wolf pup paws. All three can now be seen frolicking in the zoo's Feline Building. Also on display is an endangered Grevy's zebra, named Lakota, that was born in November 2009. Lakota is extremely shy and is usually found close by his mother, Topaz.
All eyes are on Miri, a17-year old Bornean orangutan that is part of the zoo's colony of Indonesian orangutans (the largest such group in North America). That's because she is expecting her second baby any day now, with a projected due date sometime in March or April (the gestation period ranges from 235- to 270-days). Miri's first offspring, Satu, is five years old and was the first Bornean orangutan born at Zoo Atlanta. Experts predict that without these targeted conservation efforts this endangered species could be extinct in as little as 10 years.
A 130-pound, 5-foot-10-inch male Masai giraffe made a dramatic entry into the world in January, dropping six feet to the ground as his mother gave birth while standing up. After checking out the lanky not-so-little-one, head to the zoo's Gorilla Forest to get a glimpse of a baby girl born on February 6 to Mia Moja, a Western Lowland gorilla. According to the World Wildlife Fund, there are only 100,000 western lowland gorillas left in the wild, making them a critically endangered species. A naming contest for both giraffe and gorilla is expected soon.
A newborn red-flanked duiker is now on exhibit with his mother in the zoo's Africa Rainforest area. The tiny duiker, which does not yet have a name, is part of the antelope species and will weigh just 20 to 26 pounds at full maturity. Mother duikers protect their calves from predators by hiding them in brush piles and only bring them out to nurse, so spotting the baby will be a game for visitors.
This zoo, just minutes away from Minnesota's enormous Mall of America, is now home to a tiny female White-Cheeked Gibbon. The zoo's animal care staff is now nurturing the little one, since her mother has shown little interest since she was born. She weighed just 18 ounces at birth and is said to make sounds resembling Star Wars' R2-D2. Zookeepers organize twice-daily 30-minute family reunions in hopes that the mother, Tia, and father, Bailey, will begin to bond with their offspring. The long-armed ape, the first female born in North America since 2006, will make her public debut in the spring.
If you like a side of history with your travel, you'll get it at these inns and hotels that all have an intriguing past. Some are as tame as a former convent while others have scandalous previous lives like, say, serving as the den of iniquity for an infamous Colombian drug lord. Renovations have transformed them all into visitor-friendly places with comfortable rooms that may distract from some dubious beginnings. But you can't completely wipe away the fingerprints of criminals or the memories of a Titanic survivor.
There are nine narrow suites housed inside these 100-year old railway cars that went out of passenger service in 1929. Black-and-white pics of the old Yountville station cover the walls like a mini-museum dedicated to the time of 20th century railroad barons. The cars sit along actual train tracks, but fear not, the only movement you'll feel is the spinning after one two many glasses of Napa' best vintages. Rooms are narrow, but wide enough to hold a king bed as well as a private sitting area and an ample-sized bathroom. Flat-screen TVs and free Internet access provide the entertainment.

Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar, amusingly-named one of Forbes' richest men in the world in 1989, was the owner of two three-story mansions on the coast of the Yucatán Peninsula. Conscious aside, the man had taste, and this was party central for celebrities and gangsters alike who flitted around the massive property with the reckless abandon that the 80s were known for. Escobar died in 1993 and the buildings were abandoned until 1996 when nearby hotelier Melissa Perlman, of the eco-chic Amansala, began transforming it into an eight-room haven for the boho crowd. The super spacious suites with names like King Pin and King Big Daddy give a gentle nod to the past, but are now outfitted in cool, calm colors while the helipad Escobar once used for quick getaways is used for yoga sessions. And as a precautionary measure to rid the mansion of bad mojo, Perlman summoned Tibetan monk Palden Gyatso to bless the site.

Bostonians used to avoid this Beacon Hill building at all costs. That's because it was the Charles Street Jail, a lockup that held the city's most notorious criminals (Malcolm X was once a "guest"). But now it's the place to be seen since it was converted into the hottest spot for those in the know. Visitors check into one of the 298 former cells that were beautified with rose and taupe instead of dingy grey and have wrought-iron windows that let the light shine in. At night you can drink cocktails with names like Jesse James and Doing Thyme inside the brick walls of Alibi bar or order veal and ricotta sliders and striped bass at the Clink restaurant. But cute names aren't the only reference to the Liberty's beginnings. The jail's rotunda remains intact and is still lined with the catwalks formerly patrolled by officers. Unlike the past, service is top-notch. Ask for a nail file and no one will bat an eye.

Built in the Conquistador era, this 1651 building was constructed as a sanctuary for the Carmelite Sisters in Old San Juan. The convent had been a holy residence for more then two centuries when the last nun left in 1903. The building was then a dance hall and even a homeless shelter. In 1962 there was a divine intervention that turned this hideaway from the sins of mankind into a hotel where celebs like Rita Hayworth and George Hamilton fancied a stay. Today it is a luxury property with 58 rooms and a recently opened tapas bar offering small bites for those who love to eat but take their vows against gluttony very seriously.

Downtown Nashville's Union Station was considered a showpiece of Gothic Revival architecture when it opened in 1900 and drew the likes of Mae West and Al Capone to get a glimpse. The station's 65-foot vaulted lobby ceiling, Italian marble flooring, intricate Tiffany-style stained glass, and limestone fireplace are as impressive today as they were more than 100 years ago. The fifth-floor balcony offers a great view of the ornate lobby and guests can take a self-guided audio tour that details the station's history. And while the hiss of locomotives is long gone, the turn-of-the century elegance continues in the 137 rooms.

The 101-room Augustine is a regal pressence near Prague Castle in the city's historic Malá Strana district. The seven 13th century cloistered buildings were once home to monks of the St. Thomas Monastery (several practicing friars still live in a separate part of the complex). You won't find basic, spare quarters, though. Guestrooms feature accessories inspired by early 20th century Czech cubism like timber chairs. The glass-roofed restaurant is surrounded by 19th-century Baroque frescoes, but the place isn't at all puritanical. So don't feel guilty about downing a Pilsner Urquell at the cellar Brewery Bar. Once upon a time, monks fermented beer there for profit, so we're sure they'd give you their blessing today.

Originally built in 1908 as the American Seaman's Friend Society Sailors' Home and Institute, this Georgian-style building was designed with cabin-like rooms, perhaps so the sailors would feel right at home. In 1912, the building was used to shelter Titanic survivors who lived there until the end of the investigation into the ship's sinking. The YMCA bought the hotel in 1944 and in the 80s and 90s it was a doss-house for the down-and-out. Restored in 2008, the revamped hotel is still a refuge, but now for smart travelers who appreciate the $99 and under rates. The 200 rooms duplicate ships quarters-space is sparse and calling the bed a berth wouldn't be an exaggeration. But the perks are big and include flat-screen TVs, free WiFi, and iPod docking stations, making up for the Jane's only drawback-communal bathrooms.

Sleeping inside an airplane has never been as comfortable as at the Vliegtuigsuite, a modern luxury room inside a Cold War-ear East German government plane at Amsterdam's Teuge Airport. Unlike that seat in coach, there's more than enough space here for two, and it's been rehabbed into a mega-suite with a king-sized bed, sauna, and a media center with three flat-screen TVs, WiFi, and a Blu-Ray player. A hostess is at your beck and call 24-hours a day should you need a midnight snack or cocktail. The bonus: unlike today's flights, if you want to go and hang out in the cockpit, it's all yours. After all, you are the captain of this fantastic voyage.

The ornate, 16th century private residence of Pope Julius II is set in the tranquil, olive-and-wine nirvana of Tuscany. From 1503 to 1513, this grandiose pope (the same one who commissioned Michaelangelo to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel) transformed his own residence into a decadent villa with paintings by Raphael. The home passed through various family ties and today Marquis Giuseppe Ricci Paracciani and his wife Princess Eleonora Massimo have made their home a country hotel filled with tapestries, canopied beds, and antique furniture. The simple décor is authentic to its medieval Middle Ages past, but the in-house spa offers hydromassage baths and local sea-salt scrubs that are in tune with 21st century pampering sensibilities.
