Long gone are the days when being an adventure traveler meant a long sojourn in an overseas airport. Nowadays, adventure travel is all about exploring the senses: what you can see, do, taste and touch while traveling, and it doesn't even have to be that adventurous. From shopping a massively colorful market in India to taste-testing in Macau, here are 5 overseas adventures for every type of traveler.

Wrigley Field
Try to ignore the Cub's losing streak and enjoy the history of this 1914-built stadium. Smaller than your average ballpark (it's the country's 10th smallest), Wrigley Field boasts outfield walls swarming in ivy and a hand-turned scoreboard. Soak-up the baseball nostalgia that has played host to the filming of movies like "A League of Their Own," "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," "Rookie of the Year," and countless TV shows. Take a photo underneath that iconic red marquee; hardcore fans can shell out for a daily tour that includes visits to the press box, clubhouses and dugouts.

Fenway Park
The oldest stadium currently in use, Fenway is modest and unassuming from the outside, and anything but inside. The stadium is now home to new solar panels; the Red Sox were the first team in the Major Leagues to try out this green initiative. Fans around the country come here to honor baseball's tradition. Book early for a tour and spy on players during batting practice, and plan ahead for 2012, the stadium's centennial, when Fenway will undoubtedly plan the season of a lifetime.

Camden Yards
Enjoy sweeping views of Baltimore's Inner Harbor from the recently renovated Camden Yards. After it's 1992 makeover, the stadium's wide walkways and spacious design were not only commended, but have been duplicated in several new parks. The retro-cool park was created around the base of a former railroad center and is just minutes from another baseball legend: the birthplace of Babe Ruth. While it's a newbie, the stadium has already seen some exciting games and milestones like Cal Ripken Jr.'s 2,131st game - breaking Lou Gehrig's former record- and Eddie Murray's 500th home run.

AT&T Park
In the past 9 years this park has been known as Pacific Bell Park and SBC Park before taking a namesake after AT&T. But who needs a name when it's located right smack on the edge of San Francisco Bay? Besides stellar views, the unique setting has been known to assist games in crucial times, like when balls soar over the 24-foot high right field wall, named in honor of Willie Mays and into the adjacent cove, named for Willie McCovey. The park is even a destination for non-sports fan; the stadium boasts free Wi-Fi and a 'make your own mascot store' featuring the San Francisco Giants' mascot, Lou Seal.

Citi Field
One of two new ballparks gifted to New Yorkers in recent years, Citi Field is not so much an homage to former Mets home Shea Stadium, as it is a mecca of fantastic ballpark food. Here, fans can enjoy plates of sushi, expertly made rum cocktails and even sweet treats from Manhattan burger sweetheart Shake Shack. Tai Pan Bakery, known for delicious and authentic Chinese treats, has an outpost here, as does Kozy Shack, who has an entire kiosk full of gluten-free meals. Fans can get their shop on at boutiques like the Mets Museum and Touch by Alyssa Milano, where cute baseball styles for women abound.
Las Vegas is hardly lacking in the night life department. Yet there are such a plethora of spots in this mecca of fun that figuring out where to spend time (and money) is half the battle. Put indecision aside and grab a drink or plate at these stellar newcomers and oldies but goodies that won't disappoint.

The Playboy Club
The iconic little bunny tails live on at The Playboy Club, Hef's namesake. But this spot has come a long way since the days of gentlemen smoking cigars. At today's Playboy Club, expect hip-hop music, VIP gaming tables and views from the top of The Palms.

Inside the Chandelier
The best thing about this Cosmopolitan stunner? It's still kind of a secret. Sandwiched on the middle floor of the new hotel's iconic chandelier centerpiece, the little bar is managed by an expert molecular mixologist who concocts sweet drinks with edible plants and freeze dried fruit. Try the Verbena cocktail, which includes an edible flower called the 'buzz button' that pops open, or the Madame Curry, a very spicy Thai-inspired drink. The bar also has TK# private gaming booths.

Pure Nightclub
With 30,000 feet of dancing space, pink strobe lights and a plush red VIP section, Pure couldn't be any sexier if it tried. Yet the staff here is more helpful and less ego-damaging than nearby nightclubs. The current sweetheart of the Vegas clubs scene, this Caesars venue is filled to the brim with sweaty dancers by midnight, so arrive early.

Dragon Noodle Co.
Hear that? It's your stomach and it's asking you to find a meal after your long night hopping through all those Vegas clubs. Stop in to Monte Carlo's Dragon Noodle Co. for the kitsch factor - it's loaded with paper lanterns and smiling cat figures. But stay for the surprisingly authentic menu of huge plates; try the Wok Tossed Garlic Eggplant and the Singapore Rice Noodles.

Sugar Factory
A brand new venture right inside Paris Las Vegas, Sugar Factory is one part candy store, two parts epic Las Vegas club. Comfort food staples get a sweet makeover with top menu items like Red Velvet Pancakes and Chocolate Pizza. For a tasty nightcap, the Chocolate Lounge features premiere chocolatiers and gourmet fondue to be paired with the champagne or dessert wine of your choice. Bringing home beauty secrets of a faraway destination doesn't require an expensive wellness vacation or a plastic surgery trip. Instead, national beauty secrets can be found everywhere from the local pharmacy to the farmer's market. What should be searched out and what should be left to the locals? Check out our top hits and misses below.
SKIP IT: Boots Products from the UK
Common sight: A woman from the U.S. flies across the pond and dumps out her purse, stuffing in as many Boots products in as possible before throwing down a credit card and strolling away pleased with herself. Ladies, take note. As fantastic as Boots is, these British items are available stateside...at Target.
TAKE IT: Sure, we have Nivea products back home but they don't hold a candle to the creamy formula of the German originals, which live in thin-but-hearty tins you can safely place in your purse or pocket. Before leaving the drugstore, also stock-up on Labello, a tube of no-frills gloss that moisturizes and protects lips from the sun; it's a favorite of thrifty Euro fashionistas.

SKIP IT: Brazilian Sand
Because masses of Brazilian people look amazing sitting on the beach, the rumor came about that it must be the sand. And thus, women around around the world flocked to Ipanema, shoveling up scoops of sand in hopes of turning it into some sort of miracle serum. It's all wrong.
TAKE IT: One Brazilian product that is practically miracle-worthy is the Brazil nut, which moisturizes and keeps users looking as fresh and young as those adorable ladies in Copacabana. Ditch the sand and make room for amazing Brazil nut based items from Nunaat Cosmetics. Try the Chocolat line amplified with cocoa butter, another fave of locals.

SKIP IT: Licorice Oil from India
Thought to be the cure for everything from obesity to dry skin, India's beloved licorice oil has a major savior complex, but hasn't been FDA approved for all of these purposes, so don't try to bring it into the States.
TAKE IT: Instead, go for a smaller and more useful beauty product made from similar natural oils from Indian company Lakme.Their simple Liplove lipsticks come in shades just a few darker than natural lip tone and are packed with intense SPF protection.

SKIP IT: Moroccan Argon Oil
This mixture created from the seeds of a very rare plant grown only in Northern Africa is the real deal. It's a fantastic moisturizer, age minimizer and smells plain amazing. But even a small bottle of this miracle elixir can put a serious dent in your savings account.
TAKE IT: More wallet-friendly options come from Morocco's Kajame, which has a line of products that incorporate argon oil with other natural ingredients. The Prickly Pear Exfoliator, for example, adds ground argon shell and prickly pear seed oil for a smooth exfoliating gel. Or, the Fountain of Youth creme combines shea butter, honey and beeswax to argon oil for a deliciously soft night cream.

SKIP IT: Olive Oil in Italy
A wunderkind in the kitchen, it's long been assumed that slathering skin in the sweet stuff will result in Sophia Loren-good looks. But skin will only retain the moisture for a few hours... possibly before breaking out from all the pore clogging oil.
TAKE IT: Pick up Italian beauty product Cléo. The line, which comes in soaps, creams and bath gels, is made from all natural items like yogurt, honey, vanilla and mint and is remarkable light and creamy.
Summer Vacation Ideas for Couples: Hide Away in Philly
While a bustling city isn't the first place you'd think of to get away from it all, there are quiet little corners of Philadelphia where you can be within minutes from everything you need and yet feel that much sought after intimacy. Rittenhouse Square is a popular but nearly idyllic neighborhood where colonial buildings, boutiques and cafes are the norm. If you're an art lover, look out for sculptures in the park, as well as local vendors selling homemade wares.

Where to Stay: Kimpton's Hotel Palomar is a sexy choice for a couples hideaway. Hosted wine hours, in-room yoga and spa sessions, stunning city views and a fun mini-bar assure you that you'll never have to leave the room if you don't want to. If you want to venture out for food, head downstairs to the design-friendly Square1682, the first Philly restaurant to get LEED certification.

Summer Vacation Ideas for the Family: Get Sun Some in San Diego
Splash around the waves with little ones in tow on San Diego's infamous Coronado Beach, a favorite of locals, visitors, and expert travelers alike. Because it's a city beach, you'll find people from all walks of life, including other families to get along with. After you've all gotten some Vitamin D, leave the sand and surf behind and explore the city. The most family-friendly part? The Gaslamp District where fun restaurants welcome little fingers and the San Diego Padres play baseball just steps away.

Where to Stay: The Marriott San Diego is just steps from the Gaslamp District, has spacious, comfy rooms and features a breakfast package so you don't have to pull the family out of bed in the morning and go find food. The large flatscreens, in-room Starbucks coffee and available wi-fi also help adults ease into the day.
Summer Vacation Ideas for Foodies: Eat Out in Las Vegas
The bright lights, the sounds of the slot machines - Vegas is like Disneyland for adults. But in recent years, Sin City has toned down its clubbing atmosphere and picked up the slack in food options. Amazing gems like Morels at the Palazzo are quiet and luxurious, with a 'Bloody Cart' where Bloody Mary cocktails are created tableside, and 70+ wines available by the glass or bottle. Down the Strip at Monte Carlo you can taste a sample of sweet Italian yumminess at d.vino, where an authentic cheese and salami bar is both delicious and unpretentious.

Where to Stay: There are many great lodging options in Las Vegas, but true foodies will want to shack up at City Center's Aria, which is right in the middle of all the action. Inside City Center itself you'll find many small cafes and restaurants, but the chic design and amazing center-Strip spot makes it a complete winner.
Summer Vacation Ideas for Adventure Lovers: Take to the Sky in Bucks County
This summer, adventure seekers all over will hop on a plane, strap on some hiking boots and take to Pennsylvania's Bucks County, an idyllic countryside where gorgeous hill after gorgeous hill convince you to keep walking. For a unique experience, leave the land for the sky and explore the area by hot air balloon. March Madness is here and what better way to celebrate than to annihilating good buddies at favorite Las Vegas sports books? Whether moaning in shock at how Virginia Tech was robbed of their spot, or shaking confident fists that Syracuse will take it all the way, here are our five favorite Vegas sports books where to sit back, enjoy a drink and catch the madness. And before heading to the book of choice, fill out a bracket and share it on Facebook - that way friends will know just who the winner is.

Lagasse's Stadium, The Palazzo
The sports book for people who don't like sports, Lagasse's new nook in the chic Palazzo is cozy and comfy - and serves some amazing food and drinks. Settle into the large couches and seats in the center of the lounge to concentrate on the game, but for a good meal, try one of the tables with killer a flat-screen TV view and a menu full of favorites like fish and chips, bbq chicken and $3 happy hour beers.

Cantor Race and Sports Book, Cosmopolitan
This newly opened Vegas sports book at the Cosmopolitan is already turning heads. While the sexy hotel's only betting station used to be located at popular bar and lounge Book & Stage, that venue has gone totally-music and guests can now enjoy lots of March Madness on the second floor. Two betting stations greet guests entering the venue, and once inside will find sports-specific arenas including e-Deck mobile gaming technology that allows users to place bets regardless of where they are across the resort.

Race and Sports Book, Aria
Another newcomer on the Strip, the Aria's sports book is intimate and sophisticated - perfect for a group getaway or a guy's night out. 90 high-def TV's flank three seating areas, nine betting windows and a VIP booth. While drinks keep flowing inside this Vegas sports book - and are free to those who have placed a wager - for a meal there's the Skybox Sports Grill next door where gourmet food comes on-the-go for busy game watchers.

Sports Book, Caesars Palace
Since Caesars Palace has hosted some of the most memorable sports events in Las Vegas history, it's fitting their sports book would be so popular. No wonder considering the requisite large screen TV's, betting stations and comfy seating, as well as a very smart staff and perks for Total Rewards members. The best perk? Its proximity to Bobby Flay's Mesa Grill, one of the best restaurants on the Strip. Period.

Race and Sports Book, Wynn Las Vegas
The 37 flatscreen TV's and comfy space for 125 in this uber-lux Vegas sports book isn't even the best part of the venue. That's saying something. Serious pampering is in order with cocktail service and even a food and drink menu from adjacent Zoozacrackers eater. For high-rollers they even offer a March Madness rate including two nights and seating for two at the College Basketball Championship viewing party.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Hotels in Miami Beach Florida: Favorite Stays for Singles, Design Lovers and Families

When you're ready to walk the famous Atlantic City Boardwalk, Harrah's has its own shuttle to partnering resorts closer to the taffy.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Cave Tubing in Belize: Everything You Need to Know

Jungle hiking, beach lounging, museum visiting - there are plenty of ways to get to know Belize, but none with the unique mix of excitement and relaxation that you get with cave tubing. Part lazy river, part jungle exploration, cave tubing is an adventure sport for adventure beginners; a theme park ride in the wild. You don't need a particular skill or a lot of courage, and all ages can give it a try. Here's everything you need to know to prepare for your cave tubing adventure.

Who is cave tubing for?

Cave tubing is a great activity for families, singles, or couples and groups are not a problem. As long as you have a guide and a tube, you're set to go off in search of your path and explore this unique and historical side of Belize. While you don't need to know how to swim, it's recommended.

How do we arrive at the caves?

Depending on where you start out, most cave tubing tour companies will drive you as far as they can and lead you to the water through 20- or 30-minute hikes. These walks go through the rainforest and you'll be able to view many species of amazing animals and plant life. Also note that you should always book an expert or tour company. Never go searching for the cave system or tubing on your own.

Who can help me cave tube?

There are plenty of adventure and tourism companies who would love to help you learn this exciting new sport - and it's definitely recommended that you go with them and not alone. The tour guides at cave-tubing.com are knowledgeable and have groups for both kids and adults. Their excursions with ATVs and off-roading are also a fan favorite. BelizeCruiseExcursions.com is another fan favorite with multiple knowledgeable group leaders who specialize in the Sibun River Cave Branches. Finally, Green Dragon Adventure Travel features horseback riding, extreme trekking through the jungle, and a very popular cave tubing excursion.

Where to try cave tubing?

Cutting through Mayan Mountains, Belize's Cave Branch River is a top-class waterway for cave tubing exploration. Through this path, visitors will wind around archaeological dig sites and the legendary Jaguar Paw, site of 1,000-year-old shards of pottery and clay statues, underwater waterfalls and a spiritual cove used by the Mayans to reflect on the afterlife.

A rougher river system of rapids fueled by downfalls of rains, the Sibun River is a more challenging tubing system, but a fantastic adventure. On this system, have your eyes peeled for extra-large stalactites that have been hanging from the cave ceilings for centuries.

What to expect?

The caves that Belize visitors tube through can be anywhere around 150,000 years old, dating back to the Mayan civilization. Since caves were a spiritual spot to the Mayans, they carved sculptures, left offerings and took pride in the appearances of these little nooks. You'll be surprised to be floating through a glittering cove of quartz. Bring a camera - but make sure it's waterproof.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Unique Summer Getaways: The Beaches of Rio de Janeiro

Looking for a unique summer getaway? When it's summer in the United States, countries south of the hemisphere are in the throes of winter. However, with average temperatures around 60-70 degrees Fahrenheit, it's a perfect time to see these normally smoldering cities. For a unique summer getaway that's filled with sun, sand and plenty of fun, hit up Rio de Janeiro and its three main beaches.

Ipanema Beach
The sexiest of Rio's beaches, Ipanema is famous for the scantily clad men and women who spend their time sunning here. If you love people-watching, you'll love the scene in Ipanema. In fact, their bathing suits are nicknamed "fio dental," or "dental floss." While the winter months will leave the beaches and hotels a little less packed, it's a perfect time to grab your own space, enjoy that 70 degree weather, and check out the shorts and t-shirts that come with a Brazilian winter.

Copacabana Beach
Fun and funky, Copacabana is where most Rio visitors head for summer getaways, and why shouldn't they? Copa is 4km of pristine sands and soft waves. And for the height of relaxation, don't worry about bringing anything to the beach except yourself; dozens of vendors strut the sands selling food, drinks, sun block, jewelry, sarongs, towels, and even bathing suits. So, walk on down to the beach, grab one of the beach loungers provided by the coastal hotels, and drown out your worries on this laid-back beach.

Leblon
A more affluent area than its neighboring beaches, you'll find malls, top-tier eateries, and pristine beaches in Leblon. It's also a great area to score a deal at a posh hotel, like the Marina All Suites, with their high-design suite rooms. When you've tired of Armani and sushi lunches, the beach at Leblon is quiet and peaceful. It's a great area to lay out and get some sun without worrying about families and sports fans.
If you're heading to Europe for the first time, it can be a little confusing. After all, there are so many activities to take in during such a short time. But for a real treat, save your money on all of those expensive restaurants within view of the landmarks of the great cities of the world and eat like a local. Europe is famous for a great variety of street food - all cheap and delicious. So, if you're looking for Europe travel tips, pass by those expensive eateries and don't miss these five bargain bites around the world.

Rome is all about the espresso bar.
Don't bring your box of Cheerios to Rome; if you want to eat breakfast like a Roman, head to an espresso bar. These tiny pastry shops are stocked with croissants, cookies, biscotti and other tasty bites as well as freshly brewed espresso. Make some time in your morning to sit down at the bar and have a sip, forgetting about that American Venti coffee on-the-go.

The most delicious street food in Paris is at the crepe stands.
France is full of some of the most beautiful people in the world, and by looking around you'd never know that they basically survive on the deliciously magical street food known as crepes. These yummy treats are like thin pancakes folded in half and stuffed with everything from ham and cheese to jam and whipped cream. A favorite is the Nutella flavor, a European hazelnut spread known for its near-chocolate texture and decadence. Crepe-making kiosks are all around the city, particularly Montmarte and other nightlife districts; perfect after a long night out.

You've got to try the Belgian waffles in Brussels.
Between the quirky art and stunning architecture of Brussels, you'll find tiny stalls making just one thing: waffles. These aren't your everyday freezer kind either. These waffles are super thick, super fluffy and topped with mounds of fruit, chocolate and whipped cream. With a paper plate and little fork, they make the perfect meal for walking around the Grand Place.

The best budget bites in London are fish & chips.
A full meal on the go, fish & chips is an English staple. This breaded fillet of fish seasoned with vinegar and salt on a paper plate piled high with chips (important Europe travel tip: Americans call them French fries, but they're chips in the UK) is filling and tasty. If you're on the go, grab a plate at the local corner shop in London, or get an order and enjoy an outdoor table by the River Thames.

In Prague, lift your spirits with great mulled wine.
While it's not a meal, nothing is quite as good in the wintertime as a cup of soothing mulled wine. If you happen to be in Prague around the holidays, stop by the Christmas Market in Old Town and find a stand selling this inexpensive beverage. Not only will it keep you warm while you peruse the adorable craft stands, but it's got a strong, sweet taste that's like nothing back in the States.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Five Unique New York City Walking Tours

With a myriad of themes - catering to everyone from foodies to history lovers and beer drinkers - there's something for everyone, and you'll learn all you can about New York by experiencing it. Here are five unique New York City walking tours to get you started.

The Official 'Gangs of New York' Walking Tour
Forget the glitz and glamor of The Big Apple; The Big Onion brings you to "Murder Alley," Paradise Square and other spots associated with New York's sordid gang history. While marching down Broadway and past City Hall, don't forget to snap pictures of the infamous locations immortalized by Martin Scorsese's film "Gangs of New York."
When: See dates and schedule here.
Where: Meet at the southeast corner of Broadway and Chambers Street, at City Hall Park.
Cost: $15 adults, $12 seniors.

The Luxury Chocolate Tour
New York is known for pretzels, hot dogs, and a myriad of other delicious street foods, but don't forget that the city has a sweet tooth for chocolate, too! The Luxury Chocolate Tour by Sweet Walks introduces you to five of the city's best European chocolatiers for two full hours of sampling some of the best goods the candy world has to offer.
When: Fridays and Saturdays at 12 p.m.
Where: Meet at Third Avenue in Midtown Manhattan (exact address given upon ticket purchase).

Historic Women of the Lower East Side Tour
There are plenty of city walking tours through the Lower East Side, a neighborhood with so much grit, so many yummy restaurants, and so much punk rock history that it's often named one of visitors' favorites. But only The Lower East Side History Project brings you on a tour that leads visitors through the birth of the suffrage movement and female-friendly establishments like the Visiting Nurse Service and Children's Aid. Led by an impassioned women's rights activist, even longtime city dwellers will learn a lot on this tour.
When: See dates and schedule here.
Greenwich Village Literary Pub Crawl
If walking isn't really your thing but drinking is, you'll fall head-over-heels for the Bakerloo Theatre Project's Greenwich Village Literary Pub Crawl. The walk will lead literature fans through several neighborhood pubs that gained infamy in the works or history of famous New York writers. As a bonus, at each stop the tour guides act out the little moment of history; in addition to the walking tour, you get a bit of theater.
When: 2 p.m. Saturdays.
Where: Meet at White Horse Tavern, 567 Hudson Street.
Cost: $20 adults, $15 students and seniors.

The Chinatown Food Tour
New York City's Chinatown is kind of an entity of its own. Tucked in a corner of lower Manhattan, you won't get much more authentic unless you take a cab to LaGuardia airport and fly to China! Just a few blocks away from Miami's beautiful beaches, you can take a walk down a side street and get completely lost in the exotic flavor of your own South Beach vacation. Espanola Way is just a small area of South Beach, barely more than a few blocks long, but it delivers big style so spicy you'll forget you're just a few hours from home. If you're looking for a South Beach vacation that's more about the eclectic side of Miami and less struggling to squeeze into that bathing suit, Espanola Way is the place to be.

Modeled somewhat after a quaint Mediterranean village, this South Beach bohemian enclave is anchored by the Art Deco Clay Hotel, a colorful 1930's building that formerly played home to Al Capone, the Desi Arnaz Rumba scene, and background to Miami Vice. The peach building is now home to cozy rooms and many walls full of local art and paintings reminiscent of its 30's heyday. The artistic atmosphere continues beyond the walls of the Clay Hotel and onto the street where local artisans sell music, jewelry, flowers and the fruits of their crafts from kiosks and on street corners. If it's handmade, you'll find it in this neighborhood where the patrons are extremely proud of their heritage and roots. Spanish dancing, Italian treats, Parisian dinner - it's all here.

For a bite to eat on your South Beach vacation, skip the long lines at the celeb-chef restaurants and try Milani Gelateria, a locally-owned gelato shop known to rival anything you'd find in Italy. Sweet flavors like hazelnut, melon and champagne and proudly "Made by Italians," as the store proclaims, and also made with lots of love; one bite and you'll know why this store is a favorite of the locals. For a full meal, A La Folie, reminiscent of a Parisian sidewalk cafe, has got you covered. The authentic French menu has favorites like sweet and savory crepes and thick French Onion Soup. Or, for a Spanish flair, Tapas y Tintas, with its 80 varieties of wine and sangrias, wide array of fresh seafood-inspired small plates, always makes for a good night.

For an after-lunch treat that's uniquely South Beach, stock up on handcrafted items at the Espanola Way Market, free yoga classes in Flamingo Park - weather dependent - and the neighborhood's most hidden treasure, Miami Beach Cinematheque and Gallery, a restored Gothic revival building highlighting the beach art films of the Miami Beach Film Society.
Before you've packed your bags and grabbed your essential car items, you need to figure out where you'll go on your road trip. The U.S. has several direct routes leading to and from major cities, and whether you're heading out with a buddy, a partner or the whole family, you'll find something to do. Below, find our recommendations for five great U.S. road trip ideas.

New York to Florida - Snowbird Route I-95
Looking to escape the bleak New York landscape and get some sun? Pop in the car and head down US I-95 for a drive through New Jersey, Maryland, the Carolinas, and a few other states before reaching The Sunshine State. This route is great for beginners since it's lined with enormous rest stops chock-full of restaurants, clean bathrooms and gas stations. Once you're past Maryland there's more space between the stops but the crown jewel of rest areas, South of the Border, a Mexican themed wonderland with souvenir shops, activities, food stands and even fireworks, lies just between North and South Carolina. You'll find plenty of towns and cities off I-95 for a good night's rest, too.

Los Angeles to San Diego - The Pacific Coast Highway
If you want a short road trip idea with scenery that can't be beat, take a drive from the bright lights of Los Angeles to the quaint Gaslamp District of San Diego. Right out of the city you'll meet the gorgeous waters and chic resorts of Orange County, followed by stunning mountain scenery, a few small vineyards and orange groves everywhere. Since you're never that far off from cities, there are countless places to stay, eat and shop and if you love the water, you can't pick a better way to view the coastline.
Miami to the Florida Keys - The Overseas Highway
Though it may not be the first route that comes to mind when you consider road trip ideas, the overwater highway connecting Florida to the Keys is an experience not to be missed. The Overseas Highway, a 127-mile section of US Highway 1, will take you from just outside of Miami down to Key Largo, Marathon Key and finally, Key West. A highlight of the drive is the Seven-Mile Bride, a floating highway connecting Knight's Key to Little Duck Key. For the best trip possible, check traffic reports and times of the year; during busier days the 4-hour journey across the Keys can take much, much longer.

Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon - US 93 and the Hoover Dam
It's almost unbelievable that just beyond the neon lights and glam casinos of Las Vegas Boulevard there lies one of the most amazing and favorite natural parks in the entire country, but it's true. Rent a car and zip out of Vegas using US 93 when you tire of the glitter. You'll need to switch off to I-40 to finally reach the West Rim, but this sparse desert highway, dotted with cacti, wild horses and far-away mountain-scapes is too good to miss. Before turning off of US 93, take a gander at the Hoover Dam, a modern marvel in its own right.

Classic USA - Route 66
Known as the "Main Street of America," Route 66 is what most people think of when they set out to take a trip and learn more about the U.S. As one of the original highways across the States, this road passes through Arizona, Texas, Oklahoma and others on the trip from Illinois to California. Of the quirky roadside stops dotting the highway, drivers can expect to find Chloride, an Arizona ghost town, a large shoe repair building shaped like a shoe in California, a Missouri Stonehenge and the old Idaho penitentiary. While the towns and attractions of Route 66 have seen better days, it's a great reminder of the American spirit that launched a million more innovative byways.
If you can't make it to the big destination of your dreams this year, don't worry, there are plenty of cheap travel destinations that will give you the same thrills and chills for much less. Whether you're looking for a foodie haven, an urban metropolis, or a beach bum paradise, you'll save big bucks with fantastic but often overlooked spots. So prepare to get away on just a little bit of moolah; here are our top 3 cheap travel destinations.

Brussels, Belgium
If you can't jet off to Paris this summer, think of its nearby neighbor, Brussels. This beautiful Belgian city has the same edge as Paris with funky art existing next to centuries old architecture, delicious restaurants with French flare, and a budding shopping community; French is even one of the most widely spoken languages in the city. But unlike Paris, Brussels and its quirky style are often overlooked by travelers searching for a romantic European city, making flights a little cheaper and hotels a little more cost efficient at this cheap travel destination.

Key West, Florida
Crystal waters, soft sands and stunning sunsets, you can find these glorious items at many beaches. However, Key West has a great mix of food and art that mimics the personality of epic beach escape, Aruba. Save some cash and stay in the States by heading down to the Florida Keys for some history, courtesy of Ernest Hemingway's former home, delicious meals, ala world famous pies, and total relaxation at luxurious resorts like the oceanfront Hyatt and Casa Marina.

Shawangunk Wine Trail, New York
Napa Valley, California has some of the world's best wineries and restaurants, and because of that, it can be really pricey to spend a week there. Alternatively, the Shawangunk Wine Trail of Upstate New York is a great cheap travel destination for oenophiles. It may not operate all year long, but it has some very quality wines and amazing lush hilly views - all just hours from the hustle and bustle of New York City. With 10+ vineyards and wineries, and a handful of adorable bed-and-breakfasts on the trail of Marlboro, New York, it's a fantastic cheap and fast escape.
So you're going on a road trip across the United States. Congratulations! There's very few ways to get to know the US better than being out on the open road, visiting the small towns and byways that make this country what it is. But before you get in the car, gas up and hit the highway, you should take care to make sure a few items are ready and waiting in the car with you. Here are our top five essentials for road trips across the USA.

Road Trip USA Essentials: Atlas and Map.
Even if you have applications and digital direction devices, a map is a great old standby for discovering new places and finding your way out of precarious situations. Best of all, you can score them at nearly every gas station and five-and-dime for just a few bucks, making them one of the least expensive items you'll have on you during the trip.

Road Trip USA Essentials: Garbage Bags.
Being in the car for even just a few days can get very, very messy. One road trip helpful essential you need to have on you is garbage bags, regardless of whether you've stuffed a few plastic grocery bags in your glove box, or brought a reusable canvas bag to dump out. You'll be surprised how fast small food wrappers, parking lot tickets and coffee cups pile up. It's even a safe bet to stick a roll of paper towels in there, too, just in case you need extra cleaning.

Road Trip USA Essentials: A Bottle of Water.
Besides the obvious reason of unplanned thirst, a bottle of water is super handy for road trips across the USA in case of messes, spills, and even dirty hands. After you've used up the bottle's contents, stash it in the car and refill it at fountains at rest stops and restaurants. There's plenty of free water at local establishments but ordering a bottle to-go could set you back a few unnecessary bucks.

Road Trip USA Essentials: A Blanket.
Roll up a thin fleece blanket and stick it in your trunk when you head off on your USA road trip. If you need to stop over unexpectedly to a new hotel or motel, a familiar blanket could be the difference between a good night's sleep and staying up all night. It's also handy for backseat passengers who need a little shut-eye after their leg of driving, or even for a particularly cold watch of highway. Also, in the case of an emergency, a blanket can be a warm lifesaver.

Road Trip USA Essentials: An Emergency Kit and Spare Tire.
This should go without saying, but going on your US road trip without an emergency kit is extremely dangerous and should be avoided. A flare, tire iron and jumper cables could literally save your life in a sticky situation. Also, while a donut tire is a good idea to pack, and can push you a few more miles after a flat to a gas station, you may find yourself in an area where there isn't a gas station or repair shop for hours. Having a spare instead of a donut is a safer option; the tire can be changed and you can be on your way in no time.
Washington DC is full of suits, legislation and good old political history - but, that's not all. Because all of these affluent politicos need somewhere fabulous to eat, DC is chock full of great restaurants. Cheeky boutiques, romantic venues full of candlelight, plates of comfort food; here are 5 of our favorite Washington DC restaurants.

Firefly
This Washington DC restaurant located in Kimpton's Hotel Madera gives home cooking a funky twist. Chef Daniel Bortnick combines fresh local ingredients with a variety of spices for Firefly's funky menu. Order a few sharable plates from the "picnic" menu like shrimp + grits, cheese plates and deviled eggs with garlic chips. Or, order your own plate of signature meals like the roasted organic chicken or mini pot roast. Be sure to order a drink off the whimsical menu, with names like Fairy Godmother, Opal and Lavender Lemon Drop, as well as red and white wines.

Dino
Dino's rustic Italian menu is almost too much to take in; you won't know where to start. And luckily, you won't have to pick. The Cleveland Park eatery offers a robust 3-course Italian meal for under $40, including a big list of pasta dishes, cold and hot antipasto and even small plates of favorites like olives and duck liver.

Buzz
This adorable bakery is known for its quick treats; their cupcakes, scones and brownies are infamous in DC. However, they also offer a tasty breakfast menu that shouldn't be missed. Whether you grab a savory brioche on the go or have a seat for a gourmet coffee, tea or pastry-themed cocktail and fluffy Amish scrambled eggs, don't forget to let loose and have fun in this artisanal Washington DC restaurant.

Urbana
Located in another Kimpton hotel, the Hotel Palomar, this Washington DC restaurant has a fun menu offered with the same whimsy as its brother restaurant, Firefly. Urbana's lunch menu has great list of pizzas like Bianco, with red onions and pistachios and Affumicato, full of smokey blue cheeses. For late risers, their fabulous brunch features $16 bottomless BYOB: Build Your Own Bellini with sparkling wine or non-alcoholic cider.

Liberty Tree
Washington DC restaurant menus don't get much more home-cooked than this New England transplant. Chef Graig Glufling has created a menu of all your comforting favorites: Maple Brined Pork Chop, Roasted Cod and a list of brick oven pizzas. For a light meal, try one of Liberty Tree's acclaimed sandwiches -- the lobster roll is a favorite, or a small plate of hand-cut fries, goat cheese with fig jam or oven roasted olives with bread.
There are plenty of romantic vacation spots beckoning when you're planning a trip for two, but what if you're itching to spice the trip up? Adventure vacations are becoming more and more common these days and with fantastic under-discovered destinations becoming easier to get to, you've got your pick of vacation. Here are four great destination ideas for adventure vacations for couples that you can book right now.

Adventure Vacations for Couples: Costa Rica
Because of its eco-travel initiatives and new patch of resorts, Costa Rica has been gaining popularity with couples. But besides all the pool and relaxation time, there's adventure galore for active couples. Try a nature hike through the Escallonia Cloud Forest, a foggy rainforest that's home to dozens of types of hummingbirds and beautiful big orchids. Or, animal lovers will enjoy Tortuguero National Park, where endangered giant sea turtles commune.

Adventure Vacations for Couples: Hawaii
Many a romantic couple have taken refuge on the beautiful, lush islands of Hawaii, but there are plenty of stellar peaks for adventurous couples to climb. Big Island volcano tours are popular, held regularly, and usually consist of an itinerary of visiting the Thurston Lava Tube, walking around the Halema'uma'u and Kilauea Iki craters, and catching views of the closest safe lava flows; a perfect adventure vacation for couples.

Adventure Vacations for Couples: Grand Canyon
While it's one of our most stunning natural landscapes, many Americans have never visited the Grand Canyon. Strap on some backpacks and spend time getting to know your loved one and this great nation. There are many tour companies that can accompany private or large groups through gems like the Tonto trails, steep canyon walls and the Colorado River. The hike is equally difficult whether you chose the North Rim or the South Rim, but with proximity to Las Vegas, the North Rim is somewhat easier to reach, and within distance of some amazing Native American reservations where more experienced hikers can pick up a guide and head out on their own.

Adventure Vacations for Couples: Medellin, Colombia
Adventure vacations aren't always about hiking or surfing; sometimes they're just about being in a totally different place from your homeland. For an urban couples adventure that will take you out of town, try the not-yet-mainstream Medellin, Colombia. With numerous large malls, 17 theatres and arts institutions and a dozen museums, you won't want for activities in Medellin. Plus the city has an intricate system of cable cars and a metrorail transit system that makes it a very easy place for even beginners to get around.
