Prince William and Kate Middleton's third wedding anniversary is Tuesday, April 29. Don't worry if you forgot to send the royal couple a gift though; they're all set (but probably appreciate your thought). If their anniversary has you dreaming of castles and courts, and wishing we had stateside options to visit, good news: the United States is home to one genuine royal palace as well as some worthy imitators.

Iolani Palace, Honolulu, Hawaii

It's a fun party question: where's the only honest-to-god royal palace in the United States? The answer's obvious (at least once you've heard it): Hawaii. Iolani Palace in Honolulu was the official residence of Hawaii's monarchy from 1882 until 1893 when Queen Liliuokalani was forced to say aloha (it also means goodbye) to the throne.

Nemours Mansion and Gardens, Wilmington, Delaware

It's a mansion built by the wealthy DuPont family rather than a castle. But what's more royal than an ornate building constructed by the rich and powerful? The real draw of the Nemours Mansion, however, is the sprawling expanse of intricate, exotic, and well-kept gardens that surround the estate.

Governor's Palace, Williamsburg, Virginia

While the governor of colonial Williamsburg wasn't royal, his boss was. Adornments throughout the Governor's Palace, tenants included Patrick Henry and Thomas Jefferson, reflect its residents' royal overlords.

Castello di Amorosa, Calistoga, California

Arguably the best castle on this list, the 13th-century, Tuscan-style Castello di Amorosa is also a winery.

Old Louisiana Capitol Building, Baton Rouge, Louisiana

Not to be confused with the currently functioning state capitol building, Louisiana's Old State Capitol Building in Baton Rouge is the majestic former residence of the state legislature.

Biltmore, Asheville, North Carolina

Built in the late 19th century, this mansion is striking not only for its architecture but also for its natural surroundings. A walk around the Biltmore's lush gardens and cascading mountains would leave any visitor confusing the Vanderbilt family, the estate's original owners, for kings and queens.

Manresa Castle, Port Townsend, Washington

Completed in 1892 as the home of Charles and Kate Eisenbeis, this Prussian-style castle is luxurious (Port Townsend's only hotel with an elevator, restaurant and lounge!) and offers romantic accommodations. Also, ghosts supposedly haunt the premises.

Rosecliff, Newport, Rhode Island

Now a museum, this mansion in Newport, Rhode Island housed the king of West Egg society life in the 1974 film version of The Great Gatsby.

Boldt Castle, Thousand Islands, New York

Left unfinished for 70 years after the death of the hotelier who'd ordered its construction, this castle in the Thousands Islands region on the U.S.-Canada border in New York is open for tours.

Bishop's Palace, Galveston, Texas

This Victorian-style mansion will leave visitors wondering if they're in Texas or somehow landed in England (well, as long as they ignore the locals' accents).

Thanks for the suggestion John. We limited our selection though to ones in the United States.
