Hometown: San Jose's Almaden Valley
Population: 38,552

15-year-old figure skating sensation Polina Edmunds hails from Almaden Valley, a hilly, bucolic community just south of central San Jose, California. Edmunds's meteoric rise is at least partially attributable to the fact that she lives a stone's throw from world-class coaching and skating facilities in San Jose.

Where to follow in Polina's footsteps

Edmunds' mom, Nina, a Russian immigrant, had skates on her daughter when she was just 20 months old. Polina trains at Sharks Ice, where gold medal-winning figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi trained. The club is now selling Team Polina T-shirts and is hosting Polina viewing parties and an Olympic torch parade for the Archbishop Mitty High School sophomore.

Where to eat

Figure skaters aren't known for their decadent eating habits, but could Polina resist the Swedish pancakes, cinnamon French toast and other irresistible breakfast options at the Country Inn Café, a local favorite in Almaden Valley?

What else is there to do?

Almaden Vineyards claims to be California's oldest winery, and each September, this community pays homage to its winemaking roots at the Almaden Valley Arts & Wine Festival. Lovely Almaden Quicksilver County Park contains remnants of a historic mercury mine that dates back to the Gold Rush era, and has 34 miles of hiking trails and 10 miles of bike paths.

Where to stay

The Hotel Los Gatos is a Mediterranean style resort with a spa and a high-end Greek restaurant right on Main Street in nearby Los Gatos, a historic community known for its Victorian era homes and locally owned restaurants and shops.
