U.S. Olympian Hometown Spotlight: Nick Goepper's Lawrenceburg, Indiana
Hometown: Lawrenceburg, Indiana
The gold medal favorite in slopestyle, a new freestyle skiing discipline making its Winter Games debut in Sochi, hails from the Hidden Valley area of Lawrenceburg, a city on the Ohio River in Southeast Indiana nicknamed "Whisky City" after a Seagram's Distillery in town.
Where to follow in Nick's footsteps
Goepper cut his teeth at Perfect North Slopes, a small, family-run ski resort that's produced multiple X Games champions despite a vertical drop of just 400 feet. "You don't need a huge vertical drop to learn freestyle," says Tim Doll, the special events manager of the club, which will host a viewing party for Nick during Thursday night's broadcast of his slopestyle event.
Where to eat
When Goepper returns to Lawrenceburg, he reportedly likes to eat at Whiskys, a family owned restaurant located inside a former 19th-century button factory. Famous for their smoked ribs, Whiskys hasn't named a dish after Goepper. But that could change if he brings home gold.
What else is there to do in Lawrenceburg?
Auto racing fans flock to the Lawrenceburg Speedway for weekend races in the summer and just about everyone enjoys a nice stroll or bike ride along the levee above the Ohio River.
Where to stay
There's a huge selection of hotels in nearby Cincinnati, but if you want to stay local, try the Hollywood Casino, which has recently renovated rooms, a casino, multiple restaurants and a bar with 99 varieties of beer and 31 HD TVs.
