Discover Something New at Home in Houston

One implosion at a time, Houston is losing some of its most memorable landmarks, including the much-lauded Eighth Wonder of the World (otherwise known as the Astrodome).
For life-long Houstonians, it's a kick in the gut, a source of passionate water cooler conversations and a hot political topic, so it's comforting to know we can take solace in new restaurants and bars that are mixing creative quirk with talent and vision.
New Restaurant: Caracol
Houston's great melting pot continues to bubble, but roads seem to lead back to Mexican-inspired cuisine. James Beard award winning chef Hugo Ortega wows presidents and foodies at his namesake restaurant on Westheimer, and now his new restaurant Caracol promises to do the same with Mexican coastal cuisine. Ceviches, wood-roasted whole fish and a smattering of non-seafood dishes are on the menu.
Newly Hip Hood: Downtown's Market Square
A resurgence of new bars in downtown's Market Square is giving locals plenty of reasons to stay out after quitting time. Houstonians are happy to raise a glass for a good cause, and The Original OKRA Charity Saloon on Congress is an excellent spot for drinking with meaning, since all proceeds from the bar are donated to a different local charity each month. There's more good news (and drinks) nearby at Captain Foxheart's Bad News Bar on Main Street, a casual and lively place to enjoy a drink or two.
Word On The Street
There were Super Bowl dreams for the Houston Texans when football season started in September. Key injuries, a quarterback flip-flop and now, a fired coach, have left fans hoping week after week for a win, even though it's all about moral victories now. Well, that, and top a draft pick.
Heather Staible is a fourth-generation Houstonian who still gets chills every February when the horseback trail riders saunter into town for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. She thinks Tex-Mex cures all ills and believes the Astrodome still has plenty of wonder.
