New Restaurant: Session Kitchen
With a sensory feast of music ranging from ambient to alt-country, colorful pop-art murals and eclectic munchies that draw inspiration from the culinary traditions of Louisiana, Cuba and France, to name a few, Session Kitchen has breathed new life onto Old South Pearl Street. The focus is on sharable small plates like pastrami duck ham and fried Brussels sprouts and handpicked craft beer and cocktails. Brought to you by the same folks behind the landmark Wynkoop Brewing Co., Session occupies the building formerly known as the Izakaya Den, which moved half a block up Pearl Street to a snazzy new location adjoining its landmark sister restaurant, Sushi Den.
Place to Bring a Little "Home" Home with You: I Heart Denver
The I Heart Denver Store in the Denver Pavilions at the southeast end of the 16th Street Mall takes the souvenir shop and hyperlocalizes it. Proprietor Samuel Schimek hand-picks art, apparel, and paper products from the city's top artists and designers. Grab a LoyalTee T-shirt emblazoned with local landmarks of past and present or an eye-grabbing map of Denver's neighborhoods from January Jones Prints to show that you indeed "heart" Denver.
Word on the Street
Peyton Manning. He might be national news, but Denver hasn't gone gaga for a Broncos quarterback like this since John Elway retired in 1999. Whether you are an NFL fan or not, Super Bowl speculation is hard to avoid in Denver this season.
Eric Peterson once walked Denver's Colfax Avenue, said to be the nation's longest urban street, from end to end, and lived to write about it. He has also written numerous travel guides covering Denver and Colorado and is the managing editor of Confluence Denver.
