Dallas, a city often heralded for big hair, J.R. Ewing and the Cowboys, continues to reinvent itself. New bike lanes, food trucks and art installations are enlivening downtown streets. Restaurants, shopping and outdoor parks are popping up in unexpected places -- on riverbanks, on old train tracks, across freeways. Even dogs have a new place to hang out.

New Restaurant: CBD Provisions

Downtown's swankiest new restaurant is CBD Provisions, an all-day spot with an open kitchen, a big bar up front, exposed brick walls and a lively mix of locals and visitors who all seem to be celebrating something. Impeccably sourced ingredients and heritage pork are the things here (especially the pig head carnitas), though CBD's craft cocktails and house-made strozzapreti pasta with mushrooms and a coddled egg will make you swoon.

Newly Hip Hood: Arts District

A couple of years ago, few would have predicted that downtown would be the hot place to hang out, but two new projects now have the city buzzing. The year-old Perot Museum of Nature and Science has already drawn more than a million visitors. And the adjacent Arts District welcomed a dazzling new restaurant to the 5-acre Klyde Warren Park, a green space hemmed with trees and fountains that straddles Woodall Rogers expressway like a roof.

Word on the Street

A couple of things may never change. The perennial Cowboys debate rages on: is Tony Romo a stud or a dud? One topic we can all agree on: our major highways are a mess. Many are deep in the throes of a billion-dollar expansion project. Follow author M. Scott Peck's advice and stick to the roads less traveled.
