A Day at the Beach with Celebrity Chef Rocco DiSpirito
Posted Aug 8th 2013 10:00 AM
We caught up with celebrity chef Rocco DiSpirito for the inside scoop on his Italian beach getaway. I am a: Chef
Your beach stay in 2 words: Italy, sunshine
What beach did you visit? Il Fornillo in Positano Italy
Who went with you? A big group of friends
Where did you stay? Rented a beautiful villa in the heart of Sorrento called Villa Lusso.
What's your must-do thing in this beach area? As little as possible, just do what the Italians do: wake early and let the natural beauty soak in over a coffee, then a passeggiata (long slow social walk) through town, followed by a big boisterous lunch of too much impossibly fresh seafood and plenty of Greco di Tufo wine, then a nap outside under a vineyard, then a slow wake and a light supper with friends where you laugh hysterically at almost anything. Rinse and repeat.
You'd never go to the beach without packing: Throwback sunglasses -- think 50's Sophia Loren movies -- and a great lightweight short sleeve white shirt you can wear all day and night.
What's your beach soundtrack? Italian conversation
You'd be crazy to leave here without eating the: Everything you lay your eyes on, especially the tomatoes, lemons, clams and other seafood.
Your Beach Day:
8 a.m.: Slowly rising thinking about where im going to have café e cornetto.
11 a.m.: Sleeping surfside.
1 p.m.: Lunch with everyone all together. Lots of food exploration and wine and laughter.
2:30 p.m.: Nap time Italian style: find a hammock, a chair under a vineyard or a nice tree to sleep under.
6 p.m.: Wake up and get ready for a long walk through town and gelato!
On a scale of 1 to 10, how badly do you want to go back to this beach? (1 = "Yuck, no thanks!" 10 = "Already have the next trip booked!"): 10 to the tenth power.
Rocco DiSpirito is a celebrity chef, New York Times best-selling author and host of Now Eat This! Italy, a series in which he travels to Sorrento, Italy to cook classic Italian dishes with Italian grandmothers. For more Italy coverage visit AOL Travel's Summer in Italy page.
