Summer's in full swing, and millions of Americans are plotting a beach escape -- for a day, a weekend or a luxurious longer stretch of sandy R&R.

We caught up with Christopher Gorham from USA's series Covert Affairs for the inside scoop on the actor's surprise beach party with his family.

I am a: Husband, father, son, actor and director.

Your beach stay in 2 words: Surprise party!

What beach did you visit? Laguna Beach, CA

Who went with you? My wife and three crazy adorable kids.

Where did you stay? Surf and Sand Resort.

What's your must-do thing in this beach area? Laguna's a great little beach town for a walk with an ice cream cone but the water's where I spend the bulk of my time.

You'd never go to the beach without packing: Towels, sunscreen and my camera. Some of my favorite family pictures are of us at the beach.

What's your beach soundtrack? It's one of the few places where I actively avoid soundtracks.

You'd be crazy to leave here without eating the: Ice cream!

Your beach day:

9 p.m.: I arrive at LAX, from working in Philadelphia, where a driver picks me up and tells me he's not taking me home. Before I can call the police, he also tells me that my wife, Anel, has arranged for him to take me to a secret location. Forty-five minutes later we arrive at The Surf and Sand Resort where Anel and the kids are waiting to celebrate my birthday with a surprise weekend away! Best. Birthday. Ever.

7 a.m.: My youngest is 4. We're up and about by 7, maybe splurging on a room service breakfast. Coffee tastes better when you're drinking it in your pajamas... at the beach.

9 a.m.: On the sand, in the waves, chasing kids and building castles.

Noon: Lunch by the pool and birthday cake.

2 p.m.: Back in the water. Well, near the water. My kids are still small enough to think twice about getting in more than waist deep.

5 p.m.: Showered and heading into downtown Laguna for a walk about and dinner. Katsuya has some sushi with our name on it. Not literally.

On a scale of 1 to 10, how badly do you want to go back to this beach? (1 = "Yuck, no thanks!" 10 = "Already have the next trip booked!"): 9 -- but only because I don't actually have the next trip booked and don't want to be caught in a lie in case I ever decide to run for office. I have no plans to run for office but apparently it's a fear of mine. Anel, my wife, and I have been vacationing in Laguna since 1999 and will continue to, I imagine, as long as they'll have us.

Christopher Gorham stars in USA's television drama Covert Affairs, which airs on Tuesdays at 9 p.m. EST. The show is about a young CIA agent who goes under cover and is aided by a blind CIA tech operative (Gorham). The new season premiers tonight.
