Think mountains of lobster with long seaside views, colonial homes and New England charm-that's what you'll get when you escape the crowds of Maine's Mid Coast this spring, and instead head to Southport Island. Settled in the 1600s, the island is just off of Boothbay Harbor, and is a quintessential New England fishing village.

LOVED OUR MAINE EXPERIENCE IN OCTOBER OF YESTERYEAR. MUCH AS WE WOULD LOVE TO GO BACK THERE, OUR AGES PREVENT IT. NEITHER OF US CAN TRAVEL WITH ANY SENSE OF COURAGE OR COMFORT.
WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE MAGIC CARPET? NOW THAT WOULD BE A REAL WILD RIDE. WE LIVE IN OUR DREAMS AND MEMORIES. MAINE IS RIGHT THERE UP FRONT. TOO BAD WE DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT THE "ISLAND" AT THAT TIME. IT SOUNDS PERFECT FOR THOSE OF US WHO ARE STRUGGLING TO RELATE TO HISTORY . OUR INTENT WAS TO EAT LOBSTER AND SEE THE LEAVES TURN. WHEN YOU LIVE IN CALIFORNIA, DECIDUOUS TREES ARE NOT THAT COMMON. AND LOBSTER FROM MAINE IS ALSO RARE. WE WERE TOLD THAT WE COULD EAT LOBSTER EVERYDAY AND IT WAS AFFORDABLE. THAT WAS ENOUGH FOR US TO PACK THE CAR AND GO. WE WENT BY WAY OF WILAIMSBURG, NEW YORK, WASHINGTON D.C., NEW YORK CITY , ALL OF NEW ENGLAND, NIAGARA FALLS, CHICAGO AND MANY HISTORICAL POINTS EN ROUTE. WHAT A GREAT TRIP THAT WAS. FORTUNATELY WE HAVE THOSE MEMORIES AND A LITTLE MORE HISTORY AWARENESS. DIDN'T HAVE TIME FOR PHILADELPHIA OR IT WOULD HAVE BEEN A MORE COMPLETE HISTORY LESSON. TODAY IS THE FOURTH OF JULY AND WE ARE REMEMBERING SOME OF THE THINGS WE LEARNED ABOUT. NOTHING LIKE BEING THERE TO SEE FOR YOURSELF.

IT WAS A RESIDENT FROM ENGLND WHO ADVISED US THAT WE WERE MISSING THE REAL REASON FOR LIVING IN AMERICA .WE WERE SO INSPIRED AND SO GLAD WE MADE THE TRIP. EVERY AMERICAN SHOULD HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO SEE AMERICAN HISTORY AS WE DID. YOU CAN'T HELP BUT HAVE MORE APPRECIATION FOR EVERY DAY IN OUR COUNTRY. BOOKS JUST CAN'T DO IT.
