London Rioters Interrupt Tourists' Fancy Dinner, Get Scared Off By Restaurant Staff

A Los Angeles couple visiting London headed out for a nice dinner at The Ledbury on Monday evening only to be served up a bit of chaos as rioters broke in to the Michelin two-star restaurant and kitchen staff defended the diners with rolling pins.

Writing under the name NakedSushi, the female tourist recounted being mugged during a candlelit dinner:

"Around the fourth dish of the tasting course, there were loud bangs outside. The restaurant staff was yelling at us to get away from the windows. Before I knew it, the front door, a solid piece of glass shattered and people came crashing in with hoodies, masks, and random weapons.... He told me to take off my rings and grabbed my hand, trying to yank them off. His friend tried to help too, but the rings wouldn't come off and I just yelled at him that I'd take them off myself...."

The blog went on to tell a tale of heroism, almost definitely worthy of three Michelin stars:

"The kitchen staff at the Ledbury went beyond their call of duty by rushing up from the kitchen with rolling pins, fry baskets, and other dangerous kitchen tools and scared off the looters. Then they provided well-needed glasses of alcohol including champagne and whisky. When word came that the looters were coming back a second time, they ushered us into the bathrooms and told us to lock the doors. A few minutes later, they led us into the wine cellar and told us to lock ourselves in there."

The Naked Sushette, of course, also documented the event on Twitter and had some choice words for her attackers that might not be appropriate to reprint.

In the end, the dinner was a bit of a disaster. The blogger had her ring stolen and broken glass got all over the food. At least the couple walked away with a story.

The riots, which began over the weekend after London police shot a suspected drug dealer in the capital's Tottenham neighborhood, have many UK tourism professionals concerned: Pictures of double-decker buses on fire put people off.

A spokesperson for London & Partners, the firm responsible for promoting the capital, told the Daily Mail that "It is currently too early to anticipate the effect on tourism but we are monitoring the situation and we will work with the industry to respond to specific issues as they arise."

Problem Solved:

Find hoodie. Look both ways. Stab Hoodie in face. Say "He was looting me". One Less Hoodie. Rinse and Repeat.

Wow the food in London can't be that bad that they would go and riot over it ;-) (j/k) Good for the restaurant staff to go after the rioters, if the Londoners themsevles would go after them, then this would all stop. Imagine a neighborhood watch group out with baseball bats chasing hooligans down the street. I hope it never gets to that, but people may have to defend themselves in order for this to end. And to the idiots in here who are talking about victims of capitalism or Mexicans. This has nothing to do with any of that. If you want border wars you don't have to leave America and if you want victims of capitalism, there are 50 American states you can choose from where there are hundreds of thousands of victims, so get over it and stick to the topic of the article.

I think a quick way to break the riots would be not to release anyone caught looting or committing violence. Every person arrested is locked up in jail with no immediate release. This is made public by the authorities along with the information that no one will be released until after all riots cease. After they cease, I would take my time releasing those arrested. After being in jail for one-to-three weeks with hardened criminals, most will never take part in a riot again. If there is not enough room in the jails for them, keep them out in the open on a British military base in the country, males and females separated. After sleeping out in the open for weeks with no showers, port-a-potties, and a meal occasionally, with plenty of bugs and mosquitoes for company weeks on end, most will not riot again.

Oh, the poor, suppressed victims of capitalism! Any excuse to cause mayhem. The fact is, they have more rights & chances than anyone. Schools bend over backwards to meet their demands & stoop low enough so they can graduate, but they still cry "victim!"

What Channel are you watching? WhiteGuilt#5 or something? No reason to lie and make yourself look stupid. Any of the vids on BBC and CNN clearly show persons of color crashing in windows and pushing carts of loot. Sure there are white folks in there as with their black and Asian brethren as well. This is all just opportunistic rioting by the ghetto. Same as Rodney King over here in the US. Shouldn't be allowed no matter what color.

This is the UK, where they have no 2nd amendment OR right to bear arms. These are cooks, and if you've ever worked in a restaurant you know - don't enter a cooks kitchen uninvited. We have knives and fire and we're adept at using both.

In the US in 2009 over 16,000 people died from firearms. In the UK in the same year it was 15. Not 15K - just 15. This means either gun control laws work, or the British couldn't hit the broad side of a barn.

I would like to know what hole you pulled those numbers out of. NO source I can find lists stats more recent than 2008 and very few have anything after 2007.
A report by Scotland Yard states that gun crime INCREASED by 110% from 1999 to 2006.
A UN survey (2007) reports that overall crime is HIGHER in the UK than US (85 crimes per 1000 residents vs 80 in US) especially burglary, robbery, rape & assault (especially against the elderly)
How many times are guns used to STOP crime in the UK? I don't know but I'll wager it's bloody seldom because the honest citizens don't have guns...but the bad guys do. In the US that number is over 2 MILLION times per year. (DOJ survey on gun ownership, 1994)

The second amendment was based on the fact that the British may reinvade America to take it back not the right to go and shoot your neighbor, kill your family, etc. The Brits don't have that, and don't need it. Can you imagine if these morons were all running around the streets with guns rioting?

Gracecfl, while protection against the British was one of the many arguments for 2nd Amendment, it was certainly not the only one, nor was it the most important.
I don't know if you are an American or not, but I would suggest you read the Federalist Papers and Jefferson's letters if you wish to truly be informed on this subject. If you don't wish to be informed, that is certainly your right, but I would like to kindly request that you not pretend you know what you're talking about.
