State Parks Become Victim of Budget Slashing

Several states struggling to fight budget shortfalls are announcing plans to shutter parks, recreation areas and reserves in an effort to save a little money.

California alone plans to close 70 parks, ranging from the obscure (Zmudowski State Beach) to the fairly popular (Tomales Bay State Park - pictured).

Other states hanging out the "Closed for Business" sign include Arizona, Georgia, Oklahoma and Rhode Island. TreeHugger reports that Utah and Texas have also severely cut their parks' budgets, though avoided closures, while Florida has taken far more drastic measures.

Sunshine State legislators are looking into the possibility of privatizing more than 50 state parks, allowing corporations to run camping areas and add RV sites. Honeymoon Island, a beautiful castaway spot just off the coast, could become a major campsite.

Meanwhile, even states that are keeping their parks open are putting off the sort of repairs that would have been a priority in the past. Niagara Falls State Park in New York is in notably bad shape, and it seems unlikely a contractor will be arriving any time soon.

The silver lining to this particular cloud is that even after the closures there will be more than 6,000 operational parks in the U.S. Hopefully there will be some safety in numbers.

---as a result of too many parasites ( a lot of criminal illegal aliens ) on the unconstitutional and racially bigoted , unconstitutional , potpourri of social programs at the expense of the American taxpayer(raped by layered government agencies). Liberalism is a terminal cancer on every aspect of American society and the state parks are just the tip of the iceberg. When parasites approach the same numbers as producers, we get the economic depression that America has now and the just cave-in debt raising by the surrending neo-con republicans ( demo-rat-ic " lite" : party ) to the dominant liberal, racist, unconstitutional party: the demo-rats.

All of you need to ask the Obama administration about the recent news that his state Dept. gave a grant of 788 million dollars to Egypt to refurbish mosques so we could build good will among the Muslim community. How far would those millions have went to refurbish parks?

Funny how congress just gave itself a $3000 pay raise for cost of living and no where is that talked about. Shouldnt any raise they get be voted on by the people who pay their damn wages! None of them deserve a raise in fact they should get their salery and benefits cut just like they want to do to us. IF you dont pay any taxes you shouldnt be allowed to vote. Obamanation just bought thousands of votes with this last debt raise limit. He made out quite well now all the illegals can vote for him to get in office again and take away from Americans who pay the damn taxes....

Why not see how far you can get by placing a referendun on the national election ballet. Clearly stating that any Pay cuts must start from the top, and graduate down based on gross income. People will always be willing to give advise, but nothing is being done, because people are afraid they will lose the little they have.
When all the middle class are gone, where do you think the poor and old are going. So if those who have the money want to live you better learn how to grow food, drill a well, build a house, sew clothes, and all the things you pay other so little to do. Sweeping your streets is harder than it looks. Keep telling people what to do, and start fights all over the place. Wake up money is power in the wrong hands. It's all about greed, nothing about need. Decontrolling everything is not the answer. Simple laws that cover everyone from top to bottom. If it lives let live. If it hurts you defend yourself. First leave the area, if it follows than take action. If it trys to kill you defend yourself. Get a clue government by the people can only come when people all have the right to vote, and there vote is counted. Electorial college vote is nothing more than government changing the rules whenever it wants. Proven fact check every record. Read everything ever written and check each against the other. Computers have a delete button for a reason. Paper may get shreaded, but in time it can be glued back together. I am sure there are ways to recover some deletes, but there is little you can do if you don't have paper back up. We are all the problem, so why is everyone blaming it one someone else. Simple we all have different thoughts, and who wants to admit they are wrong. What an answer that is right ask yourself. Asking everyone is nothing more than getting closer to the right answer. Majority should be best answer. Correcting mistakes come with time. People are life forms. Plants, trees, animals, ever germs are life forms. This planet could be considered a life form, for all I know. It gives us life that I know. Sure some will say I am right, others will say it is just dirt and rock. My thoughts are my thoughts, and I think if you read all the different things written by all those who have special education in the different fields the true answer can be found on how better live with the planet. If you can live with the planet, I hope maybe one day you will be able to live with the people who inhabit it. Love does make the world go round, at least for me. Open your mind to the possibility that everything is possible, because even if you do not know, someone some day will find the answer. Dreams can come true if you work on following your dream.

There are 53 National Park's (Niagara Fall's, Yosemite, etc. ) and each has been around for at least 2 million year's, but was not recognized until 1899 - present (President's T. Roosevelt, Wilson, Taft, Coolidge, Harding, F.D. Roosevelt, Truman, and possibly Kennedy) had declared such a location to be a "National Park".

thank you, let the people take them back, then the governement will want them again to tax. they do not belong to Washington anyway, BUT it shows how sick they are, yep no tax reductions for the wealthy but cut the parks, those sick stupid parks.

Just a few points for a tax payer to ponder: 1) It is interesting to note the parks are for EVERYONE to enjoy yet they are the first to go. 2) there are hundreds of entitlement programs and agencies that benefit relatively few but are not touched. 3) Rarely if ever do you hear of state agencies cutting and consolidating their hundreds of agencies and departments.
