Europe's first high-speed international trains to use solar panel generated electricity were introduced Monday. The trains link the cities of Paris and Amsterdam.

Solar power is used in a 3.6 kilometer (about 2 mile) stretch of tunnel crossing Antwerp, Belgium. 16,000 solar panels were installed on the tunnel's roof and cover an area of 50,000 square meters (about 12 acres.)

The project costs about $22.8 million.

The panels produce 3,300 megawatts per hour of electricity, or the average annual consumption of nearly 1,000 families, reports Agence France Presse.

They will not only power the high-speed rail, but also support inter-city trains while providing enough electricity to charge the train station, according to The Daily Mail.

The electricity produced feeds into the line's infrastructure, for lighting, signals and in-train power points, Frederic Sacre, spokesman for Infrabel, which runs the rail network, told AFP.

47.3 million kilograms of carbon dioxide emissions are expected to be eliminated by the project over the next 20 years.

The first "green train" left Antwerp on Monday for the Dutch border.

This article is about generation of electricity using solar energy
Solar power has great potential.
There are many competing technologies, including 14 types of photovoltaic cells, such as thin
film, monocrystalline silicon, polycrystalline silicon, and amorphous cells, as well as multiple
types of concentrating solar power. It is too early to know which technology
will become dominant.

Well I guess someone has to decide whether it is generating 3.3 megawatts or 3,300 megawatts. There is a great difference in the amount. One would be in the millions of watts and the other in the trillions of watts. Or 3,300,000 (3.3 megawatts) or 3,300,000,000,000 (3,300 megawatts).

If Europe is able to develop such advanced technology, it should be possible in the US of A. Unfortunately, there are too many interests controlling our government, Mr. Obama need to remember what Eleonor Roosevelt said: "The world belongs to those who can achieve their dreams...." One man can't do it all, so rather than huffing and puffing about politics, lets get together and push this country into progress rather than rhetoric.

Whatever! But it runs the trains. I was born there a long time ago and feel i'm missing out on a lot. We all are. They switched from wooden shoes to Nikes and just DO it.

If you check the web site of the company that built this, you'll find out it generates 3.3MW-hrs per year. Since 1 MW-hr sells wholesale for about $100 these days, they spent $20M to generate about $330 worth of electricity a day.

We are so behind in the United States and I will fall short of saying stupid, but does anyone in any "planning commision" ever think about the future and what is needed?

We americans think we are so advanced but Europe is kicking our ass! Advancement in the US is figuring out ways to cut taxes for rich people.

Leave no billionaire behind.
