The Puyehue-Cordon Caulle volcanic complex located west of the Chile-Argentina border began erupting on Saturday and by Monday had delayed flights and canceled hundreds of others for the rest of the week, the Associated Press reports.

Winds caused ash from the eruption to spew roughly 6 miles into the sky towards the Atlantic Ocean, over Argentina and Chile.

All flights between Buenos Aires and the Andean resort towns of Bariloche, Esquel and Chapelco were canceled through June 12. Seven other airports in Argentina are closed through Thursday, leaving much of southern Patagonia to fend for itself.

Aerolineas Argentinas canceled night flights from Buenos Aires to Santiago and Mendoza as a precaution. LAN airlines canceled some 35 flights from Chile to southern Argentina as a precaution.

Flights were canceled until Tuesday morning at the Ezeiza International Airport in Buenos Aires, an official told CNN.

In related news, the Argentine ski resort towns of San Carlos de Bariloche and Villa la Angostura were coated in volcanic dust, a mere two weeks before for the start of the winter ski season. A trade group told the AP that it's unclear how this will affect the local economy, but for now, tourists have been asked not to come to the resorts.

UPDATE:
Aerolineas Argentinas and Austral, two Argentine carriers, have canceled all flights within the country until further notice, the AP reports. Flights have also been suspended through Wednesday between Buenos Aires and cities in the U.S., Europe and South America. Flights from Chile with flight paths over Argentina were also suspended.
