Destin-Nation Costa Rica: Hitting the Beach in Central America

With coasts on both the Pacific and Caribbean, the Central American country of Costa Rica is home to more than 750 miles of shoreline. To the traveler, that translates into no shortage of gorgeous beaches, most backed by lush green tropical forests. Whether it's relaxing seclusion or seaside parties, Costa Rica has a beach for any travel type.

What's awesome about vacationing in Costa Rica is the affordability of lodging. Of course the luxury resorts are there if that's desired, but smaller, mom and pop run hotels offer prices that would be unheard of stateside. Rates are broken down by season, and visiting during the "green" season will promise the best prices. Christmas, New Year's and Easter...not so much. Just be prepared to spend a few extra dollars on air conditioning in some places.

In terms of transportation throughout the country, commuter planes are probably the best bet. Rental cars are an option, as are buses. But those options can unnecessarily waste hours, especially if coming from San Jose in the center of the country. Regional carriers like Sansa and Nature Air (the world's first carbon neutral airline) can get travelers on the beach quickly.

I love Costa Rican beaches...particularly in the northwest corner of the country. Tamarindo is a great one. Weather is mostly perfect, relatively inexpensive and enough people speak passable English to make hanging out easy. The downside is that there are so many "Gringo" expatriates that it's difficult to get a real local "flavor." Some of the Gringos seem to be in business there just to fleece their unititiated breathern...watch out spending dollars and receiving your change in colones.

In Costa Rica, just make sure you hold on to everything you bring. Your camera, laptop, backpack, even shoes. They will steal anything you have. If you go hiking in the jungle, you be held up by bandits and they will take everything. But on the up-side for all you dope heads, you can get all the coke you want for about 10 cents on the dollar. Just ask any kid on a bike and it will be delivered. Might be lite a line or two but that the cost of doing business. This country just hasn't figured out tourism brings cash. You can buy any cop for 50 bucks.

There are two beaches called Playa Negra in Costa Rica, one on the Pacific coast and one on the Caribbean side. I think the article is about the one in Guanacaste (Pacific coast), although it mistakenly states that Playa Negra is on the Caribbean coast.
