Destin-Nation Mexico: Best Beaches South of the Border (PHOTOS)

There's a reason so many songs have been written about our southern neighbors. Mexico is home to nearly 114 million people, with 78% of the population living in urban areas such as Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey.
Yet, despite Mexico's widely urban population, the beach towns along the country's Pacific and Atlantic coasts are some of the most breathtaking in the world.
The Atlantic coastline offers the calmer waters of the Riviera Maya and Cozumel, with hundreds of beaches hovering along its shores. The more rugged Pacific Ocean side is home to the super luxe Cabo and as well as the surf meccas in Zihuatenejo and Sayulita.
The elephant in the room, though, is the current travel warning by the U.S government, which asks citizens to cancel non-essential travel to the country.
Nevertheless, violence has been kept, for the most part, to non-tourist areas. But, be sure to check with the State Department's website before randomly picking a destination.
Regardless, the country is an ideal beach destination for families, surfers, and beachgoers alike.
Bonus: Low season runs from May through November; rates are slashed, but the beach towns are more susceptible to hurricanes.
Tulum
Ask just about anyone what they think is the most incredible beach in Mexico, and you're sure to hear "Tulum." The beach, set below the Mayan ruins, has practically see-through water. It's a short beach, but it's a goodie.
Spend the morning walking the incredible collection of ruins (open from 8am to 5pm, not including night tours), pack a picnic and stay the afternoon enjoying the scenery.
Where to Stay: The town of Tulum is broken up into three parts: The hotel zone, archeological zone and the town zone. Save money and stay at the Posada Luna del Sur, a small personally-run hotel in downtown Tulum. The hotel strives to create a sense of place with white-washed walls, Mayan art and a dining area on the roof. It's a bargain, too: $70 per night in the low season. Be forewarned: no kids under 16 are allowed.
Or, head to Be Tulum, part of the Design Hotel Group. The 20-room hotel (with jungle, arena and ocean suites) sits on the beach (complete with a dining area overlooking the Ocean). Rates start at $342 for a jungle suite in low season and kids are OK.
Getting there: Tulum is 81 miles south of Cancun, which is home to a widely accessible international airport. Rent a car at the airport and explore neighboring beaches as well.

I live in Mazatlan and would point out that the picture is of Playa Norte- you can see the 7 mile long malecon (oceanside boardwalk) next to the water. Isla de la Piedra is lovely, and our favorite place to swim since the waves are gentle and you can go out for a long ways and not be over your head. The palapa restaurants are wonderful, and you can leave your things and go swim and they won't be disturbed. The water taxi ride is not $10 it is 20 pesos, about $2 USD for a round trip.
Mazatlan is in Sinaloa, a state that has had its share of violence, but we have lived here for four years and consider it the best place to live. It has a wonderful Centro Historico, and I have the good fortune to live in a wonderful 120 year old home there, six blocks from the beach, the Plazuela Machado, Olas Altas, and much more. It is a fascinating city. I have been blogging about it for four years at www.countdowntomexico.com if you'd like to know more about it!
I wanted to point out this post says the Tulum Beach is short. The beach within the Tulum Ruins is short, but there is a much better beach. Calmer, longer and FREE. Playa Maya is Tulums Public beach. It is located between the Ruins and the Hotel Zone of Tulum. Its amazing.

I live in Cozumel, not very far from Tulum and the crime we deal with is primerily theft. Yes there is crime in Mexico, but unless you are dealing drugs, stealing from the cartels, or even getting involved with them because you want to buy drugs, then you are a heck of alot safer there. I spend time in Atlanta and not a night goes by without a murder or two or more.
I walk my dogs in the middle of the night and feel perfectly safe and I am a single women. You need to research before you speak. Would you tell people not to visit the USA due to crime? Check out crimes against tourists in Miami!!!
very nice beaches but you want continuo breathing u know what i want to say, dont know, ok the news in the spanish chanel tell you that they have a lot of killing every were in mexico Cancun etc

June 05 2011 at 10:49 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI have had the opportunity to visit west coast mexico, puerto valleta, cabo san lucas, mazaltan. I prefer to be in Quintana Roo Mexico. Chetumual is the capital for Cancun, Tulum, Playa del Carmen, Cozumel, all of these places offer so much more, then west coast beaches in mexico. The sand never burns your feet in the Quintana Roo !! The sand is mixed with coral, which reflects the sun, not so tough to walk in when its extremely hot weather. The sand will burn your feet in west coast beaches , and for you that love to scuba dive, snorkel, parasail, etc... I love being around the second largest reef in the world. Quintana Roo, Cancun, Belize, Honduras, Costa Rica, all share the same reef, that offers a UNBELIVEABLE Scuba Diving Experience. The beaches in all of mexico are "great", I like the East Coast Beaches and the Mayan Atmosphere, and if you ever get a chance to go to ATLANTIS which offers a submarine (120 foot dive) to see The Great Wall in Cozumel. That is a memory you will hold on too!!!
