Sen. Chuck Schumer: Amtrak Should Have 'No Ride' Lists
The Democrat called for a list akin to those of airlines' at a press conference Sunday following the release of intelligence learned from the raid on Osama bin Laden's Pakistan compound, Reuters reports.
The current "no-fly" lists cross-checks air travelers with international watch lists, as mandated by the September 11th Commission in 2004.
Schumer also said that he would push for additional funding for railway security, commuter and passenger train inspections and heavier monitoring at train stations around the nation.
"Circumstances demand we make adjustments by increasing funding to enhance rail safety and monitoring on commuter rail transit and screening who gets on Amtrak passenger trains, so that we can provide a greater level of security to the public," Schumer said.
Evidence was found inside bin Laden's compound that indicated al Qaeda was discussing attack options on a train inside the U.S. on the 10th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks.
Schumer also said at the press conference that additional attacks were considered on Christmas Day, New Year's Day and following Obama's State of the Union address.
In other Amtrak news, 15 states and Amtrak were awarded the $2 billion that Florida turned down for high-speed rail travel in March.
Nearly $800 million will go to increasing train speeds in heavily-trafficked areas, such as Amtrak's Northeast Corridor, the Associated Press reports. An additional $404 million will expand high-speed rail service in the Midwest; roughly $340 million will be allocated to better service in California, with hopes of creating high-speed service between San Francisco and Los Angeles.
