Oh no they didn't! The FAA announced on Wednesday that all planes carrying Michelle Obama and Vice President Biden are to be handled by an air traffic supervisor not a controller, the Associated Press reports.

Following several S-turns, the plane carrying the first ladies aborted their landing. There was not the proper space between their plane and that of a loaded cargo flight that had just taken off.

The new rules now apply to approaches and departures handled by the Potomac Terminal Radar Approach Control (which handled the First Lady's landing Tuesday) and takeoffs and landings at Andrews Air Force base where the presidential fleet resides.

The Associated Press reports that all flights carrying the president are already handled by a supervisor.

The haters are out in force today. The only thing missing are the white sheets. FCS the wives of the president and vice president were on that plane. The five miles is a safety precaution. I for one could not stand G.W but, I would not wish ill will on his person or family. Get a life haters. The election is over! You lost! You will get your chance in the 2012. GBA

Pretty funny since most supervisors in the FAA are people who didn't like working trafficor couldn't get seniority so they bid for a sups job. Trust me on this one, you want a controller working your plane, not a supervisor !! Retired 25+ years in Miami

"Close call?" Pfft.
Who the fk cares? Self important elitist women. I suppose they requested special seat covers too so their precious flesh didn't touched places the Great unwashed had been.

Controllers work the position day in and day out with thousand of planes a year. In the system thousand of planes a day. Supervisors "watch" these controllers work. They may actually talk to an aircraft for 8 hours out of a month. I want my family with contoller that works the position 100 hours a month. If the controller sent someone around then good call. They didn't think it was safe enough and wanted to be safer. Thank you.

President Obama's family, including wife, Michelle and daughters Malia and Sacha are a great example to the rest of the country, but their status as "first family" does not,I think, entitle them to protections not available to the rest of the nation.
Assigning a superviisory air traffic controller to Mrs. Obama's flights seems elitism in its clearest definition.
I don't like it. The FAA has failed in almost all of its resposibilities for years and this is a blatant error to add to the list!

Hi PETE

Wow, the first lady and the VP. get to have FAA rules changed over night for something that happens all the time according to the FAA. The plane was not in danger, is what the FAA was quoted, But the families of Continental Flight 3407 have been waging a battle for 2 years to help make the skies safer for all of us and just keep running into bureaucratic roadblocks. Another slap in the face of the working class.

The planes came within 3 mile of each other, how much room does she need.

Three mile separation is all that is needed between heavy aircraft. What is it she is actually complaining about, that's not even considered a near miss?

Thanks Matthew, I know a lot of Air Traffic Controllers and for my money and safety, I want the controller, NOT the Supervisor working my plane. As the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) would say, "safety was not compromised at any time".
