Royal Wedding: Keeping Up With Kate and William's Honeymoon
There's been speculation about a staycation in England, a Caribbean getaway and an East African retreat. Rumors swirled about a honeymoon down under, or a romantic tryst off the African coast. Oh yea, and now there is Jordan.
Wherever the royal couple chooses, it seems that any of the prospective getaways would be a fine choice for newlyweds. Here's the lowdown on six destinations Kate and William might enjoy.
Kenya: It's not surprising that speculation has Kate and Will taking their honeymoon in Kenya. The East African country is where Will popped the question back in October. And, if it's privacy the couple is looking for, Kenya might just be a great place to find it. As the Prince told People magazine, "Africa's the perfect place to come. The locals haven't a clue who I am, and I love that."
Isles of Scilly: If it's nostalgia the Prince is looking for, then the rumors of a honeymoon in the Scilly Isles make sense. Young William once vacationed on the islands, off Great Britain's southwest peninsula, with his parents and brother. The Scilly Isles are reportedly on a "shortlist" of domestic honeymoon spots. According to the Daily Mail, the couple is being encouraged to take the staycation approach to their honeymoon, as it might be seen as poor form for them to take an expensive trip when so many Britons are pinching their pennies.
Mustique: Perhaps the happy couple will choose to take a different repeat vacation, in this case to the Caribbean island of Mustique. Part of the Grenadines islands, Mustique is a 1,400 acre private island owned and operated by the Mustique Company. The island is billed as "unquestionably one of the most exclusive islands in the world," which might be a great draw for the royal couple after spending so much time in the limelight. And they would know whether it's exclusive or not: they paid a visit back in 2008. And, according to the Today show's royal wedding watch, Kate's family has scoped the island out as well.
Australia: We admit that the Australia rumors are based in some fact. In March, while touring cyclone damaged towns in Queensland, Prince William hinted that he might want to bring his new bride back to the country. While addressing crowds in the city of Cairns, William himself speculated: ""I will have to come back; maybe we'll have a honeymoon in Cairns?" The Telegraph reported. He also professed to a love of scuba diving and a desire to dive the Great Barrier Reef, adding that the Aussie weather was much preferable to that back home.
Seychelles: Another addition to the repeat vacation theme is the Seychelles, an African island nation in the Indian Ocean where Kate and William vacationed in 2007. The supposed honeymoon would take them back to the North Island of Desroches, the site of a reported reconciliation between the two after a short split. In terms of maintaining privacy, the island has only one airstrip, so keeping tabs on people's comings and goings should be easy. And the coral reef that circles the island would be perfect for scuba-loving Wills.
Jordan: Jordan might likely be near and dear to the Middletons' hearts as the family lived in the capital, Amman, for a time in the 1980s. According to The Telegraph, Kate and William are believed to have booked a private tour of southern Jordan, which would include a visit to the Dead Sea and Petra. (You might recognize the ancient city of Petra's treasury as the Temple of the Holy Grail from Indiana Jones.) The couple is also expected to spend the night in a luxury tented camp and call on their friends King Abdullah and Queen Rania. While this option seems to be the most thought out, a royal aide had to burst everyone's bubble telling The Telegraph that no official honeymoon announcement would be made until after the wedding.
