9 Fantastic Small Food Towns (PHOTOS)
TEXT SIZE:
A A ARestaurants in New York, Chicago, San Francisco, and Los Angeles have all won awards, been lauded by critics time and again, and often serve as landmarks in many travelers' memories. But what about those towns people pass by on their road trips to San Francisco or flights over the country?
There are small towns all across the U.S. that you could easily pass by not knowing what you're missing. Places like Evanston, Ill., Danville, Calif., and Ithaca, N.Y. are serving food to rival that of any award-winning meal in neighboring cities. From holes-in-the-wall to fine dining hidden treasures and from "down home" Southern cooking to delicious sushi, the options are manifold.
On a future weekend excursion, check out one of these nine towns that should prove surprisingly tasty.

Asheville, N.C.
Asheville, N.C., has been acclaimed in recent years for being a pioneer in locally-grown, seasonal, eco-friendly cuisine. About a ten hour drive from New York City, some of Asheville’s best restaurants include Corner Kitchen, Fig, and Table. Asheville has plenty of other draws, too, with the Biltmore Estate nearby, a thriving music scene, and outdoor activities.

Weaver D's Soul Food is the finest I've ever had anywhere. East-West Bistro, The Five and Ten, Speakeasy, and so many other fabulous restaurants make this a comparable stop to Lawrence, KS and others on your list.
Btw, Tellers, Wheatfields Bakery, Freestate Brewing Company and La Prima Tazza are just amazing places in Lawrence, KS.
I live in West TN foodie hell right now. Gotta get back to the amazing goodness...
Thanks for the piece.

April 19 2011 at 9:00 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThis seems legit enough, but Evanston? A "small town"? Please. As a fellow Illinoisian, I can tell you---as can pretty much anyone with a map--that Evanston is a great place, but small? I don't think so. Also, as a Chicago suburb, albeit a great one, it doesn't count. There are many worthwhile places to visit, but it's hardly anywhere you'd miss or not consider if you're in the area. I'd like to read more about places that are farther afield from big cities, AOL Travel. Not a "miss" entirely, but not a "hit" either.
