TripAdvisor – the same travel website that publishes an annual list of "Dirtiest Hotels" – has combed through traveler reviews and come out with a list of top beach destinations in the U.S. and around the world.

Part of the website's "Traveler's Choice Awards," the list is based on reviews submitted by the 20 million members who use the TripAdvisor website.

In the U.S., Florida took six of the Top 10 beach destinations: Panama City Beach took home the bronze, while Miami Beach, Sanibel Island and Clearwater fell just behind. Captiva Island took the number eight spot and Siesta Key rounded out the list.

Hawaii claimed two of the top beach destinations with Honolulu and Poipu, a small town full of resorts and high-end shopping on the southern side of the island of Kaua'i.

Cape May, N.J. was named the runner up on TripAdvisor's list. The U.S. beach destination that received top honors was Myrtle Beach, S.C.

"It's that time of year when travelers are dreaming of getaways to warm beach destinations," says Barbara Messing, chief marketing officer for TripAdvisor, in a statement. According to a recent poll done by the company, 68% of U.S. respondents are planning a beach vacation in 2011.

As for the list of beach destinations throughout the world, Providenciales in Turks and Caicos claimed the number one spot. The beach destinations that rounded out the top five were Boracay, Philippines; Palm/Eagle Beach, Aruba; Negril, Jamaica; and Tulum, Mexico.

Myrtle Beach and Cape May fell into the sixth and ninth spots, with Seven Mile Beach in Grand Cayman and Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic sandwiched in-between the U.S. beaches. Santa Teresa, Costa Rica finished the Top 10 list.

My favourite place to go in April is Pigeon Forge, gatlinburg and sevierville. In Tennessee. With vacation accommodation at a good price and great weather, it's ideal. There are mountains, shopping, reasonably priced meals and pleasant enough temprtatures to sit outside on the patio to eat your meals. The Flowers are blooming, the blossoms are everywhere. I don't know why is is not given the credit it deserves. We would like to hear of other areas that are just as fine.

Some of the comments about Myrtle Beach seem to be jaded to the "commenters" singular experiences which I am sure most readers can see through. We are full time residents in the Myrtle Beach area and have owned property here for almost 15 years (originally from the Midwest). We have raised our children here and after having lived in Florida, California, New Jersey (to name a few) - Myrtle Beach is by far one of the most unique and amazing places to completely experience life as it should be. You don't make Number 1 in the Country and 6th Internationally by accident! So those of you who feel differently, please stay where you are and leave those of us who know why Myrtle Beach is ranked No1 - experience the best beach in the Country without you!

What about Saipan? Often rated as having the best beaches in the world and when you add the cleanest air and most consistent tempature - the mainlain beaches don't stand a chance.

the people in myrtle are the worst.. southern hospitality my ass.. that only works if your poor and southern.. drive a benz there and you really get to see how those people treat people. they are all haters. everything closes to early too. no night life. they want people to come and visit and when they do they make rules and ordinances so they wont come back. (Bike Week). it all come down to if your poor and white go to myrtle, everyone else go to a clean beach in Florida.

Samoa Beach at Eureka, CA. No crowd, no traffic, just miles of empty beach.
