Harry Potter Exhibit Opens at New York City's Discovery Museum in April

The official opening of the exhibit is April 5, but a special "sneak peek" preview begins on Friday, when visitors can check out the 14,000-square-foot Harry Potter world, which opened in 2009 in Chicago, and has visited Boston, Toronto and Seattle. NYC was not a scheduled stop, but the popularity of the show has brought it to the Big Apple.
"New York is the perfect location for our last stop in North America," said Brad Globe, president, Warner Bros. Consumer Products in a statement. "We think fans will be thrilled to have one more opportunity to experience firsthand the magic of this incredible exhibition."
Fans of author J.K Rowling's magical world that have come to life in seven films so far – the final installment of the series is due to open this summer – can see authentic costumes and original props from the films.
Muggles, or regular humans, may not know all the lingo of the Harry Potter world, but recreations of the Great Hall, Hagrid's hut and the Gryffindor common room give a glimpse into the magical series.
Items like Harry's original wand and eyeglasses, the Marauder's Map, Gryffindor school uniforms as well as costumes worn at the Yule Ball will be on display. There are also interactive areas, such as a Quidditch section, where visitors can toss a Quaffle, pull Mandrakes in Herbology, and check out Buckbeak the Hippogriff and a giant Acromantula spider.
The exhibit is scheduled to run through September 5, 2011.
To see original movie sets, fans will have to wait until 2012 and make a trip to the UK, where the Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter is slated to open in 2012.
Earlier this month, Warner Bros. announced plans to open the attraction, located about 20 minutes outside of London at Leavesden Studios, where the films were largely shot.
