Seven Unbelievably Scenic Cruises
TEXT SIZE:
A A ASome of the earth's most picturesque scenery is best seen by sea. Cruise ships can often reach areas far off the beaten track, and offer a unique perspective on Mother Nature's grandeur. From the fjords of Norway to the isolated sounds of New Zealand, the view is incredible from the deck of a cruise ship.
If you're wondering which cruises offer stunning views, we've put together a sampling of some of the most breathtaking. Here are our picks for the top seven scenic cruises:
Penobscot Bay, Maine
Following in the tradition of 19-century tall ships, cruises in Maine are powered by the wind. Thirteen traditional sailing schooners make up the Maine Windjammer Association, and each vessel offers its own unique cruise experience. Cruises depart and end in Penobscot Bay, a protected body of water filled with hundreds of islands and surrounded by miles of rugged Maine coast. No cruise is the same, as destinations are based on weather and the captain's whim. Trips range from weekend getaways to week-long journeys, and cost around $160 per person per day.

We have been fortunate that we were able to cruise in the third decade of our 40 year marriage. I would have to say that Celebrity cruises were our best experience, and among the best was visiting Scandanavia and
St. Petersburg before 9/11 when travel was less stressful !

Love the beautiful photos - do you have any pic's/info for the Hawaiian Islands? We'll be on vacation there in June and may be able to take some time to explore the outer islands. Also have a question for comment(s): What is the procedure for cruise ships "out to sea" in the unfortunate event of a Tsunami, similar to the one off Japan? Thanks!

If you can ever afford to do a cruise in Alaska, I encourage you to do so. I don't like snow, but the scenery was absolutely breathtaking. The ship somehow got into one of the straights and we got to watch as one of the glaciers was dropping large portions of ice. We sailed around icebergs. Just beautiful.

NOW, IN RETIREMENT, WE HAVE CRUISED IN MANY PARTS OF THE WORLD. WE ENJOYED EVERY CRUISE EXCEPT ONE ON HOLLAND AMERICAN TO HAWAII. OUR SHIP HAD NO STABILIZERS WORKING AND SEVERAL PEOPLE BROKE BONES. THEY HAD TO SLOW DOWN TO A CRAWL WHEN THE POOL WAS FILLED OR THE WATER WOULD COMPLETELY SPLASH OUT. THE BULKHEADS WERE EVEN BOWING AND THEN SNAPPING BACK. IT SOUNDED LIKE GUNS BEING FIRED AT NIGHT. ONE NIGHT I WAS THROWN OUT OF MY BED....BARELY MISSED HITTING MY HEAD ON THE NIGHTSTAND AND LANDED ON MY KNEES. BY THE TIME WE GOT TO HAWAIII I COULD NOT EVEN WALK. WE SAW NOTHING BUT THE SHIP AND DOCK ANYWHERE IN HAWAII AS A RESULT. 2 MONTHS AFTER RETURNING TO FLORIDA I HAD TO HAVE A KNEE REPLACED. NOW THE OTHER ONE NEEDS REPLACEMENT. FOR A CRUISE WE WERE SUPPOSED TO ENJOY, IT HAS COST US OVER $50,000 IN MEDICAL COSTS AND A YEAR OF OUR LIVES. YEAH HAL PAID OUR CRUISE COST BACK.....BUT NOT THE AIRLINE OR THE COST TO ME PHYSICALLY. THIS YEAR WE WENT ON A PANAMA CANAL CRUISE ROUND TRIP ON ANOTHER LINE...AND LOVED IT. SMOOTHEST CRUISE WE HAVE BEEN ON. LOVE PRINCESS CRUISES !

We flew to Tahiti, spent a week there, cruised for two weeks on the Aranui (a cargo-passenger ship that goes every three weeks through the Tuamoto atolls and to most of the Marquesas, with onshore visits everywhere), then had a week on Moorea.
The people were so warmly welcoming, and the whole month was wonderful. I just wish I could do it all over again.
My husband and I took an Alaskan cruise in August of 2009 and it was a beautiful cruise, I recomend it to every one. It was a once in a life time experance.
March 12 2011 at 3:49 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI am a New Englander at heart, but if you love the tropics you need to see the French Polynesian Islands. You don't need a cruise to do it. Just book a package and fly there. All of the islands are amazing and different in their own way. I believe French Polynesia is the most beautiful place on the planet.
