Best Photo Opportunities in Edmonton
What are the best backdrops for your digital photo album? We asked Edmonton photographers Jessica Fern Facette and Jonathan Luckhurst to suggest their favourite Edmonton photo ops for tourists. Facette was listed as one of Canada's top 30 inspiring wedding photographers in Wedding Bells Magazine for her fresh and whimsical style, while Luckhurst's ethereal film images of people and landscapes are featured in his book SILHOUETTES. Here is what they said.
Tips from the Pros
"Of all the places I have photographed in Edmonton, I would suggest the old trolley tracks as you come off the south side of High Level Bridge," says Jonathan Luckhurst. "You can capture the graffiti tunnel and the backdrop of trees and vegetation is beautiful. The trolley runs in the summer, though, so don't get run over!"
Jessica Fern Facette's favorite place to take photos is at Churchill Square during the summer festival season. "There is so much to capture," she says. "There is the Gay Pride Parade (mid-June), The Edmonton International Street Performers Festival (July), Cariwest (August) A Taste of Edmonton (July), The Works Art and Design Festival (June)."
Looking for more great Edmonton Photo Ops? Check out the suggestions below.
1. The Romantic Photo: Ezio Farone Park
The open green space just south of Jasper Avenue was named for an Edmonton police officer killed in the line of duty. His name lives on in the popular picnic destination overlooking the North Saskatchewan River and the High Level Bridge, which has incredible south facing views of the city. Beat the sun out of bed and photograph the sunrise (or the swarms of joggers huffing and puffing their way up the steep flight of stairs leading up from the swanky Royal Glenora Club). Or, take advantage of the diffused evening light when you arrive to shoot Edmonton's colourful sunsets.

2. The Quirky Photo: High Level Bridge Street Car
Lomography fans are sure to go analog crazy while riding the vintage High Level Bridge Streetcar. Hop on at the Jasper Plaza stop (north of 100 Ave. between 109 St. & 110 St.) and get ready to shoot your way across the High Level Bridge, passing through the graffiti tunnel and over to the Old Strathcona Farmer's Market. Make sure to get a shot of the conductors in their snazzy uniforms.

There are two locations for you to choose from-the South Terminus (Old Strathcona) at Gateway Boulevard & 84 Ave and the North Terminus (Jasper Plaza), north of 100 Ave. between 109 St. & 110 St.

3. The Family Fun Photo: The Midway at Fort Edmonton Park
The best photo op in Edmonton for families has to be the vintage Ferris wheel at Fort Edmonton Park. The historical site is North America's largest interactive historic park covering the history of Edmonton dating back 150 years. Pile the family into the Ferris Wheel buckets at the 1920's Midway and stop to say "cheese" before moving over to a group shot on the beautiful hand-carved carousel horses. If you're really ambitious, you can opt for a professional portrait upstairs in the Ernest Brown Studio building. They'll dress you up to look like a Billy the Kid or a damsel in distress.

4. The Scenic Photo: Connors Hill
Did someone say toboggan? That's what you should bring with you if you are planning to visit Connors Hill, located adjacent to the Muttart Conservatory on the Southside of the river. The steep slope is home to the Edmonton Ski Club and is the best place for sledding in the city. Its high vantage point overlooking the Edmonton skyline means you can capture what Edmonton is famous for-outdoor recreation in an urban setting. The hill also overlooks Gallagher Park where the Edmonton Folk Music Festival takes place every August. Bring a tripod for night shooting.
