Royal Caribbean says foul play is suspected in the death of a 32-year-old Polish musician crew member found dead in Cozumel.

The body of Monika Markiewicz, who worked aboard the world's largest cruise ship, the 5,400 passenger Allure of the Seas, was recovered from the ocean off the southern part of the Mexican resort island, says Francisco Alor, attorney general of Quintana Roo state, where Cozumel is located.

Royal spokeswoman Cynthia Martinez says the woman had left the ship on Friday and did not return. Her body was recovered by Mexican authorities on Saturday.

"Tragically, we recently became aware that the crew member was a victim of a violent crime while ashore in a remote area in Cozumel," Royal Caribbean says in a statement. "We are working closely with law enforcement on their investigation, and will provide any assistance we can to catch and prosecute those responsible to the fullest extent of the law."

The cruise line says it is "actively providing support and assistance to the crew member's family and friends, as well as her fellow crew members."

Alor says an autopsy determined the cause of death was drowning, but that Markiewicz also suffered a blow to the head. Police are investigating the death as a possible homicide.

Cozumel is a popular port for cruise ships on western Caribbean cuises. Reports of violence involving tourists on the island are rare.

The death of the Royal Caribbean crew member comes only a few weeks after several ships, including the Disney Wonder, pulled out of Mazatlan over concerns of violence in that city. Most of the ships, but not the Wonder, have since returned after officials promised beefed up security.

Another cruise incident happening on an Island that isn't save to visit. Unfortunately someone was murdered this time. So much going on in Mexico. Regardless what part of Mexico it is it is still not safe with all the violence that is going on. You have to be careful with these Islands that these cruise ships are going to lately. Muggings going on. Now murder. Makes you wonder. You pay a lot of money for a cruise and if things like this keep happening I would think twice.

I used to go diving in Cozumel. I haven't been there in years. I saw bouncers in Carlos and Charlies take a couple at toss them on the sidewalk in the middle of an afternoon one day. The young mad had "too many" of their "Sex on the Beach" shooters and test tube drinks. They grabbed him and threw him out and he hit his head. I was upstairs and looked out the window down on the street and saw blood coming from his head. They tossed his girlfriend on top of him. She had a sundress on and it was up above her waist. No one seemed to care. It was my last time to the corrupt town. All they try to do is sell you bogus timeshares. A harrassing vacation at it's best. Stay out of Mexico entirely.

@ Norma Jean @Sam
I'm sorry you had a bad experience, but your comment is incredibly ignorant and racist. I am American, and have encountered countless rude and impertinant people in my own country. Does that mean EVERY American is like that? Of course not, shame on you.

Regardless of whether this is an accident or a homicide, it is extremely unfortunate for everyone involved. If it is the latter, the guilty party should be held accountable for their actions. However it is unfair to discriminate against millions of people and group every citizen in Mexico as if they were the same person.

Maybe "The Lord" does not approve of cruise ships? All praise the lord! Let's travel using donkeys like Mary and Joseph did!

And again, some nut job drops the Jesus bomb in a discussion having nothing to do with religion. (Talk about taking the Lord's name in vain.) I guess it's better than the idiots that make everything about race or religion--but only barely.

My condolences to the family, friends and coworkers. I hope that they catch the guilty party soon.
