The average cost for domestic airfare increased nearly 11% in the last year, with New Jersey claiming airports with both the least expensive and most expensive airfare.
According to a new report released by the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS), flying out of Newark Liberty International Airport will cost you: the airport was ranked as the most expensive in the nation for the third quarter of last year, with an average cost of more than $468.
Surprisingly, the cheapest airport to fly out of also landed in New Jersey. Atlantic City International Airport has the lowest average fare at just $153.
The largest jump overall was found at Charleston International Airport, where average fares soared 27.2% compared to the same time in 2009. Other airports that saw huge increases are Burlington International in Vermont (23.8%), Newark Liberty (23.3%), Minneapolis-St. Paul International (21.6%), and Bishop International in Flint, Michigan (27.6%).
With an average airfare of $451, Charleston International also fell just behind Newark as one of the most expensive airports to fly in and out of. Alabama's Huntsville International ($449), George Bush Intercontinental in Houston, Texas ($439) and Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky ($436) were not far behind.
Besides Atlantic City, airports rounding out the list of top five cheapest are Long Beach Airport ($238), Orlando International ($242), Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood International ($245), and Southwest Florida International in Ft. Myers ($251).
