Best Places to Unplug

Hotel Hana-Maui, Maui, Hawaii
The road to the windward-side town of Hana includes 617 white-knuckle switchbacks and 56 one-lane bridges -- a deterrent to the tourist hordes crowding other beaches on this island paradise. But it's worth a hair-raising ride to get to the 1940s plantation-style buildings that make up the Hotel Hana-Maui. There's no need to watch TV or surf the Web here. The hotel boasts ocean views of mama whales teaching newborns how to breach during whale season. And it's not just technology you can strip away. So remote and quiet, Hotel Hana proudly lays claim to Hawaii's best nude beach.
Mary Jane's Farm, Moscow, Idaho
Organic ideals are not just about vegetables, they're a lifestyle at this Idaho bed and breakfast, located near the Washington border (Spokane is less than two hours away). It's all about getting back to the land on the 50-acre organic farm, where you can pick your vegetables for the evening's fresh-from-the-farm supper. At night you stay in a cozy, walled tent with comfy beds, but no electricity. Bathe outside and off-the-grid in a private fire-warmed tub, while staring at the stars under a great big Western sky.

Look at the rates at those places...check out www.seascapeinn.com instead; Just as nice a place and much more affordable for regular people. Its within 8 miles of Tiamo and you have access to the rest of Mangrove Cay while you're there, not stuck at just the one "resort". You can walk the beaches at high and low tides, snorkle, bonefish, any kind of fish or do nothing but relax on their beach...

such as, to the Tahiti and the surrounding island groups -- Austral Islands,
Society Islands, Marques Islands, etc. At first, I thought it was just another
media hype ! However, after three weeks down there cause after having
to change my plans to Australia/New Zealand after all of the rain, then the
flooding later -- was so glad and happy that I was there in the South Pacific.
It is NOT a media hype !!! the islands there are just as IF there have remained
unchanged for the last 50 years and relatively "cheap" if you know how to
shop around for a good exchange rate (Pacific Francs to US dollars) and
it helps if you know a little French as they only speak either French or the
Tahitian language, which is NOT that hard to learn.
NANA (good-bye in Tahitian) from Papeete, Tahiti BEN
You don't need electricity on 3-Mile Island...once there, you glow in the dark. Sorry, but I can't imagine a more appropriate place to avoid. Are you aware of the half life of radiation? No way, Jose.

February 05 2011 at 11:32 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyHa! You should come visit my family's lake cabin. No tv, no internet, no air conditioning, just lake living and fun! We spend our time outside, in the water, grilling out, in a hammock reading/napping or just talking to each other. At our house, you are forced to relax because there is nothing else to do. Best and cheapest vacation ever!

These Places are In the Jungle and Jungles are not Human Friendly..
Sounds great and all, but I can't get past the economic reality that these places SHOULD be CHEAPER than a regular hotel since they basically have no utility bills - BUT, without even bothering to look, I can guarantee a night in one of these "back to nature" retreats would cost a WHOLE lot more than even a high end hotel in just about any major city or beach town. In other words, you could go to a very nice hotel for less money and simply DON'T BRING YOUR FREAKING LAPTOP OR CELL PHONE with you! Unplug the room phone and TV and go sit on the balcony. Or, another option, for probably about the price of two nights in one of these places, you could go buy yourself a nice tent, a camp stove, sleeping bag, hiking boots, etc. and go camping in a national forest until you've used up all your vacation time.
February 05 2011 at 10:42 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyCheck out www.ladera.com for special offers and packages. Rates drop in late spring and again in summer when you can save nearly 40% off the peak winter rates. Check it out! It's definitely the travel experience of a lifetime.
February 05 2011 at 10:23 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyNice story Sarah. We went the same direction with the vacation rental we have in the Finger Lakes of NY. Guests leave saying how great it was to be in a luxury setting WITHOUT internet to distract them from enjoying their time in nature. Unlike others, I won't post the website to Sky Lodge, but anyone is welcome to look it up.
