Cruise Ships Return to Mazatlan

Some of the cruise lines that bypassed Mazatlán, Mexico last week because of concerns over violence, have returned to the port this week after the city increased security at the cruise terminal, in tourist areas and excursion sites.

So far, Norwegian Star and Carnival Spirit have resumed visits, but Disney has not, reports the Seatrade Insider.

"We made a commitment to more security so ships are back. If all goes well, they will [continue coming]," port director Alfonso Gil Diaz tells the trade publication.

Among the worrisome incidents that alarmed cruise lines were three reported robberies involving passengers or crew and the shooting of a Canadian, not from a cruise ship, who got caught in gang crossfire in the city.

Disney Cruise Line spokeswoman Christi Erwin tells AOL Travel News the line is sticking with its decision not to call at Mazatlan, through April. She says no decision has been made on whether the Disney Wonder will visit the city on fall Mexican Riviera cruises.

This week, a high-level delegation of Mexican federal, state and local authorities met with Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association leaders in Mazatlán.

"We had meetings with local officials and they committed to providing for additional security in all the main tourist areas and shore excursion sites. We also had our shipboard security team go ashore this morning and verify all those additional security measures were being implemented," Carnival spokesman Tim Gallagher said.
