FAA Proposes Fines on American Eagle, Continental

The Federal Aviation Administration has proposed fines against two airlines -- American and Continental -- for operating aircraft that were not in compliance with Federal Aviation Regulations.

In the case of American, a $330,000 civil penalty was proposed against the carrier's regional subsidiary, American Eagle, for operating an Embraer 135 regional jet on 12 flights while it needed repairs.

The FAA alleges American Eagle mechanics failed to note broken passenger seats and armrests on two aircraft during a Dec. 18, 2008 inspection and did not follow the approved maintenance manual instructions during those inspections.

FAA inspectors discovered seats on two aircraft that would not raise and stow into the upright and locked position for takeoffs and landings.

Inspectors also found damaged center armrests that would not stow in the upright and locked position.

The FAA alleged that American Eagle continued to use one of the aircraft before it was repaired; the other did not fly until the work was completed.

The FAA also proposed a $275,000 civil penalty against Continental Airlines for operating two Boeing 737-900ER aircraft on 73 flights with landing gear wheel-tire assemblies designed for other 737 versions.

The FAA alleged Continental mechanics failed to follow the maintenance manual when they installed the assemblies and released them for service on Nov. 7 and 19, 2009.

The carriers have 30 days to respond.

By the way, for those interested, if you sometimes post comments on Pop Eater (and their related popsugar) and AOL news sites, one of the absolute worst being politics daily, they will censor what you say, and not just for vulgarities. If the comment is not PC enough and disagrees with what they think, they will not post it. I found it ironic in that the place I tested this idea with popeater was on the article on Muslim censorship, via threats of violence (surprise, surprise), of South Park. So just be aware that Pop Eater is into censorship big time. Two of their favorite protectorates are Muslims and illegal aliens, but any PC, liberal cause will do, such as shielding liberal politicians from criticism. And, for the record, the sexual molesters at the TSA seem to have been added to the protected list. Politics daily will also follow suit and censor an absolutely true, non-vulgar comment simply because they disagree with it and it is not PC enough. I have been repeatedly testing the popeater and Politics Daily comments section and they also censor any negative comments about themselves, such as this. Apparently they are ashamed of what they are doing and trying to hide it. In some, popeater was censoring comments while allowing others to use profane vulgarities. How inconsistent and hypocritical. The latest confirmatory test was 12/27/10 (started keeping track around 6/10).

Won't these fines simply result in higher airfares?

The airline industry is one where small fortunes are made from formerly large ones.

the wrong type of landing gear on a 737, big mistake, that real nice to know when it wants to stop it will snap off, I'm sure there where some welding on the wings that needed to be done also, but there not going to tell us that

These American Eagle flights are a joke. Between the fuel fumes in the passenger cabin, and I swear NON of American Airlines seats have any padding in them what's so ever, especially the Eagle puddle jumper flights to the Keys. The American Eagle planes should be considered high risk flying health hazards in the sky. I haven't flown AA in over 5 years, and I refuse to fly on any American Airline flights. Flying junkers in the sky.

I flew 11-02-2010 on a continental commuter, the flight was overbooked,my seatback was not able to come to the upright position , there was others oin this aircraft as well. I said nothing as I wanted to make my flight. I returned on 11-23-2010 and once again the same situation. I am Ia FAA licensed Airframe and powerplant tech so I do know a bit about regs. This time I did call the flight attendant and nearly got bumped as we were crowded again! I apologised to passengers most of whom dont even know this is a safety issue. Seems the feds are so concerned with grandma and grandpa in their wheelchairs and models in lingerie at the full body scanners and patdowns to worry about how the carriers risk us to worry.I offer all to a fed if contacted. This was the in the flight attendant job description in the name of passenger safety, why was it not wrote up in a discrepancy.

Question...Who gets the Money from the FINE ?? Another Question ...Does Fining really Help The Airlines or The User ? ...I suggest Using FINES to be given to Upgrade The Airplanes in Question Not into Some CEO's Pocket or Commission which is more likely the real reason behind such Fines...Its about TIME Americans Begin Helping Build into the System what is Right and Decent for Everyone....
