Everyone has a different definition of a romantic getaway. In Virginia, you can find the kind of escape to suit your tastes no matter what. You'll find mountains, beaches, natural beauty, American history, and anywhere you go, you'll be met with that famous southern hospitality. Here are some ideas for romantic getaways in Virginia.

If you love the ocean, the best romantic getaways in Virginia can be found at Virginia Beach. In the summertime, this town is packed with tourists, but come in the off-season and you'll find you have the whole beach to yourself -- what's more romantic than that? Young lovers on a budget will love Angie's Guest Cottage, while those who want to splurge on a romantic getaway in Virginia Beach should reserve a room at the Hilton Virginia Beach Oceanfront, where you'll enjoy stunning views from your luxurious resort room.

If you prefer mountains, you'll find plenty of romance in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. Romantic getaways here range from private mountain cabins and campsites in and around the Shenandoah National Park to large four season resorts. If you want a quiet weekend with nature, find a cabin in Luray, VA, and enjoy hiking in the park and a tour of the stunning Luray Caverns. Come in October to witness the fireworks of Fall -- some of the country's best leaf-peeping is in Virginia.

If a resort sounds nicer to you than roughing it in the woods, check out Massanutten Resort just outside of Harrisonburg. This four season resort has more activities than you can possibly cram into a week-long vacation, but for your romantic getaway in Virginia, you'll especially love the couples massage at the Massanutten Spa and the Winemaker's Dinner, offered every Thursday night. If you can't make the dinner, try a winery tour instead -- they're available all over, every day.

If your idea of a romantic getaway in Virginia is something active, try a canoe trip with your sweetie on one of Virginia's many scenic rivers. We recommend the New River in southwest Virginia for some of the best scenery (but you might also hit some tricky rapids!). For a romantic Virginia getaway in the winter, how about spending your days on the ski slopes and your nights cuddled up by a fire? Massanutten has decent skiing, but you'll find more trails at Wintergreen Resort.

Want to take in some culture on your romantic getaway? In Virginia, you can't throw a rock without hitting a historical site. Some of the best historical tourism is in the Historic Triangle of Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown. Plan to give yourself a whole day to stroll around Colonial Williamsburg, immersing yourselves in the lifestyles of early America. Perhaps the best souvenir shopping in all of Virginia is at the Jamestown Glasshouse, where you can watch glassblowers make various items before your eyes, and then decorate your home with lovely handmade souvenirs from your romantic getaway in Virginia.
