The Denver jail hosted a would-be air terrorist last night who turned out to be a telecommunications executive just trying to fly home from Denver International Airport to Salt Lake City.

Sergei Berejnoi, 49, of Sandy, Utah will be posting bail today, set at $15,000, for missing his flight, causing a scene and causing a plane to be called back to the gate so his luggage could be procured and searched.

"He was irate enough to have the gate agents call the police department and have him arrested," said Denver Police spokesman Sonny Jackson, especially after his angry comments alluded to a bomb inside his luggage.

Skywest Flight 6694 had already left the gate just after 7 p.m. when Berejnoi arrived and tried to board the flight. Angry with the possibility of having to spend the night in Denver, he made a scene and started claiming the luggage he had checked contained explosives.

"We checked the luggage and there was nothing in there of any consequence," said Jackson.

The airplane left, once again, without Berejnoi and the detainee had to spend the night in Denver anyway – in a jail cell.

Berejnoi, the owner of owner and president of Mission Tel Inc., a low-cost international long-distance telephone company, is charged with endangering public transportation. The crime is punishable by up to 12 years in jail and a $750,000 fine.

Some executive he is...He knew he was late so why didn't he ask for the next available flight and if none was available with this airline, with another airline to booth.

Why does everything think he's not possibly a born and raised U.S. citizen. There are lots of citizens who are not named John Smith!

I don't understand why his bail is only $15K.
He can bond out for $1,500 or just put up the $15K.
And, he could easily be a serious flight risk and just skip the country.

I doubt that he'd get anywhere near the maximum possible penalty, but 6 months and $10K sounds appropriate. Plus, he needs to reimburse SWA and the Denver airport, and compensate any passengers that he screwed over with his stupidity.

Throw him in jail and check his immigration status. If he's here illegally, deport him after he does his time!! As the Gunny R. Lee Ermy would say, "stupid jack wagon!!"..

What an idiot.
He had to realize that stunt would land him in jail.

If his luggage had already made it onto the plane, he must have been sitting in the bar getting drunk.

Does anyone know the country of origin of the name Sergei Berejnoi?

Well if he's owner of and president of a telecom company then he's got the cash to charter a jet to take him home rather than pulling a stupid stunt like that.. Look's like from now on he will be flying charter.. no other airline will accept him
