Scuba Diver Has Close Encounter With Shark Off Maine

A scuba diver is glad he had his camera with him. Scott MacNichol, 30, used the camera to fend off a porbeagle shark, and he has the scary video to prove it. The coldwater shark bared its teeth as it apparently mistook the camera for food, MacNichol says. The incident happened off the eastern tip of Maine, near Eastport.
A commercial diver, MacNichol estimates the shark was 8 feet long and weighed about 300 pounds.
MacNichol was filming the ocean floor as part of an environmental assessment for Cooke Aquaculture. He says he saw the shark swimming above him as he shot footage of empty salmon pens, and then the animal came at him.
In the video, teeth fill the frame before the creature swims away.
"He took a couple of bites at the camera. When he did that I was pretty much petrified," MacNichol says. "If you watch the video, you can hear me screaming underwater."
Porbeagle sharks look like mako or great white sharks, and typically dine on herring and mackerel. Shark attacks are rare in New England, though sightings of great whites off Cape Cod this summer caused officials to temporarily close some beaches.

They are wild animals with the ability to kill in seconds, and while we can anticipate a certain behavior by them under certain conditions, we cannot accurately predict their every move. Many factors dictate whether they will attack...how hungry they are, how threatened they feel....and probably a whole bunch of other stuff that we as humans just have no idea is going on inside them. Even shark behavior "experts" have been attacked, so come on all you arm chair shark experts...don't try to convince me that you know what a shark is going to do. Likewise, to say that every shark is a maneater seeking out humans is a naive statement as well. Some don't even have the physical capacity to kill a human. Bottom line...they are wild animals, driven by instincts and behavior patterns that we can observe but not fully understand and predict. When you're in the water with them, they call the shots. Your behavior can sway their behavior a bit, but if something triggers them to attack...game on!

October 29 2010 at 1:31 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWhat part of "You look like a sea lion in that black wetsuit!" don't you understand, diver dumb? I've been scuba diving for about 20 years now, and I never once had a shark come close to me. I have always worn a bright yellow wetsuit with no black straps or equipment. Where other people in my various dive parties have been hassled by them, I never have. Sharks are attracted to dark skinned, swimming things. Duh! It's the color of their food you know. Hello? So keep wearing that suit, shark bait, and we'll see what color you are when you exit the next shark's colon.

October 29 2010 at 10:26 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplySharks do not attack swimmers/surfers/divers on purpose. These creatures are less dangerous than your household toaster (which by the way is responsible for more deaths worldwide than shark attacks) if the animals are respected. Although shark attacks are very uncommon in the northeast all divers should be aware of what to do in the event that a shark comes into their dive area. If you act like a meal you may be treated like one.
Now before you begin with your harassing comments I live what I preach and have been on numerous dives observing Reef/Nurse/Lemon/Tiger sharks. These animals are absolutely beautiful and we need to stop viewing them as the monsters of the ocean and begin protecting them. We need to stop shark fishing. If you follow the news you will see that they estimate that over 90% of the shark population has been killed in parts of Asia. These practices are moving closer to home and the next point of attack for these fishermen is the Bahamas. Take some time and view the petition below

kathy.... You are writing to no one. If you have a complaint to or about AOL, you need to email them. You're wasting your time on this board.
