A seaside town in Southern Italy is considering a ban on women wearing miniskirts and other revealing outfits.

The ban, proposed by the mayor of Castellammare di Stabia, would also cover outfits that show too much cleavage and low-rise jeans.

Mayor Luigi Bobbio says the restrictions would "restore urban decorum and facilitate better civil co-existence" in the town near Naples.

He has asked the local council to approve a measure that includes fines of $35 to $696 for offenders.

The mayor's initiative is being backed by the local parish priest.

''I think it's the right decision,'' Don Paolo Cecere tells the Cronache di Napoli newspaper. ''It's also a way of combating the rise in sexual harassment."

Bobbio's plan also includes bans on blasphemous language and playing soccer in the town's public parks.

So we should allow sexual harassment to continue because women deserve it? I've been followed and catcalled on streets wearing jeans and a turtleneck, I've been the victim of sexual assault three times and every time I was wearing appropriate attire and behaving chastely. Clothing and behavior has nothing to do with sexual harassment and everything to do with the fact that it remains acceptable because, hey, if it happens to her, she asked for it.

"What the hell do residential rental rates in California have to do with sexual predators in a suburb of Napoli?"-----------

Perhaps they are lamenting the fact that the increased rents make it difficult if not impossible for most sexual predators to continue living in their area and are unable to afford to commute ? It's tough when you can't find a predator when you want one.

I've been everywhere and found Naples to be the dirtiest city on earth. I realize this small town is only near Naples. In Napoli, people throw their garbage out the tenement windows forming large piles. I had my picture taken next to one. A man tried to sell my traveling partner and I a Uzzi; another tried to trade his 12 year old daughter's body for a carton of American cigarettes. We declined.

Naples and surrounding area are slums; the least of their problems is mini-skirts.

Angie, you're a pig. Seriously. My boys have Asperger's and don't behave like this. They are intellectually well above average and place high in all of their classes. Plus they are gentlemen. I hope you walk in front of a bus or meet some other equally violent end.

If your boys are intellectually above average and behave well, they don't have Asperger's Syndrome. Give some thought to the chance that you are making excuses for them not being achievement-oriented. Also give some thought to the chance that you're a bad parent and your boys are trouble-makers. See how it takes all kinds?

What? Eliminate one more pleasure in life? Note that those who are leading the call for banning mini
skirts are the older ones who have always felt nervous
at viewing the most of beautiful women! Strangely,
young men in the main, scarcely look at them! That is because they are accustomed to the baring of the women's charms. In fact, if everybody went around
stark naked, nobody would even notice it after a while
and all kinds of sexually related crimes would drop down to near nothing! And THAT's the truth!Roland C. Woodaka
