Adventure Activities in Cancun - Try if you dare
1. Swimming with Whale Sharks
There are not many travel destinations that can offer swimming amid the world's biggest fish. Isla Holbox is a small island located northwest of Cancun, attracting visitors for its fascinating flora and fauna. There are dolphins, manta rays, green turtles, flamingos and numerous other bird species, but the absolute highlight here is the yearly arrival of whale sharks – they find the warm Caribbean waters to be ideal feeding grounds. Without a doubt, one of the most adventurous and daring activities in Cancun is swimming or snorkeling with these peaceful giants. The whale sharks are in this region between June and August. Various operators in Cancun offer tours.
2. Diving in Cenotes
Cancun lures visitors for its marvelous beaches, but the high number of world-class diving spots along the Riviera Maya also makes it an attractive place for an adventure vacation. To top that off, daring divers also find the possibility to dive inland in the so-called cenotes – sinkholes filled with groundwater spread all over the Yucatán peninsula. Cenotes are filled with fresh clear water, and the visibility under water is excellent. Scuba Cancun offers diving excursions to the cenote Dos Ojos (Two Eyes), part of the Nohoch Nah Chich cave system, the world's largest underwater cave system, and to the cenote Chac Mool. Non-divers can also participate in these adventurous tours and explore the cenotes with a snorkel and a mask.

3. Scuba Diving in Cozumel
The island of Cozumel, located about 50 miles south of Cancun, was just a fishing village until the early 1960s, when French explorer Jacques Cousteau discovered it as a diving paradise. Cozumel is particularly famous for its good underwater visibility the whole year round and the spectacular marine life. Those tempted by scuba diving should definitely give it a try while staying in Cancun. Diving centers in Cozumel offer scuba diving and snorkeling tours. The possibility of wall diving and swimming through tunnels and canyons make diving here a great adventure activity in Cancun, even for experienced divers.
4. Snuba, Snuba Doo and Sea Trekking
Xel-Ha is a wonderful natural lagoon with crystal clear waters less than 80 miles south of Cancun. It is also an archeological site and is the location of a huge aquatic theme park, which offers a variety of fun activities for children and adults. There are still a lot of fish swimming in the bay, and the park's services make it possible for the whole family to discover this large aquarium on a sea trek or snuba dive. Sea trekking is walking underwater with a helmet that supplies air. Even non-swimmers can do it. Snuba is underwater snorkeling. Instead of breathing through a snorkel you're breathing through a tube that supplies air and allows you to submerge into the underwater world. Kids between four and seven years old can share this experience with Snuba Doo.

5. Go on a Canopy Tour
Selvática is an adventure park located in the middle of the Yucatan jungle south of Cancun, which offers various adventure activities off the beaches. The real adrenaline rush is the Extreme Canopy Adventure. You will glide through the air at dizzying heights on 12 long ziplines, the so-called "extremo circuit." After this white-knuckle experience, you will be taken to a nearby cenote, where you can swim or jump in from zip lines.
