Malibu is the place that comes to mind when listening to Katy Perry songs. This city is a quintessential southern California hotspot and the happy hour restaurants and lounge bars do not disappoint. You can feast on sophisticated bites with fancy cocktails or you can brush the sand off your feet and go casual for cheap beer and quesadillas. Here is a list of the top stops for happy hour in Malibu.

1. Saddle Peak Lodge

You might want to check your calendar and make sure you're free every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday between 4pm and 6pm during your visit to Malibu. This happy hour restaurant mixes good food, refreshing drinks, and a magical atmosphere, all for a discounted price.

Saddle Peak Lodge is like stepping into a cozy cabin hidden deep on a mountainside, but the outside patio is like an enchanted forest complete with cobblestones, waterfalls, and flowing creeks. It is a great place to bring a date or a group of friends to gossip over gourmet comfort food and a glass of wine. With prices on the happy hour menu ranging from $7-$9 it's best to order a few items and share them. The wild game corn dogs, Thai-style buffalo carpaccio, and the irresistible fried mac 'n' cheese balls are fairly unique happy hour specials in Malibu and come highly recommended. Their wines by the glass are all priced half off, beer is $5 and specialty cocktails are $7.50.

2. Duke's Malibu

While the romance of the cool breeze and crashing waves might hypnotize certain patrons, spending the evening at Duke's is more like visiting your cool uncle's beach house. Its down-to-earth decor, casual happy hour menu and tropical cocktails make for a relaxing time at a very relaxing price.

Duke's has themed days during the week to lure in the locals. Mondays and Thursdays from 4pm to close are Aloha Hour, where happy hour specials include $3 Budweisers and Primo Island lagers. Tuesdays are fish taco nights, with $2.50 tacos and happy hour specials on the beer. Come back on Friday for $4 Mai Tais and Hawaiian Dancers cocktails.

Duke's Malibu, 21150 Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu, (310) 317-0777.

3. The Sunset Restaurant

It's not so easy to find upscale happy hour lounge bars in Malibu. Most fine-dining restaurants open late and serve full price drinks and menu items, but The Sunset Restaurant is an exception. The restaurant sits on the beach in Zuma, hence the name: you can watch the sun set over sea. Its all-white, beach-inspired interior makes the colorful food and cocktails stand out even more. Oh, and if you feel yourself overcome with romance at this happy hour restaurant, you can also meet with their wedding planners to plan your special day.

Monday through Thursday from 5pm to 7pm you can dine on $5 happy hour menu items like pork sliders, fish tacos and oysters Rockefeller. During Monday Night Football, happy hour specials run through the evening: beer is $4 and a glass of wine and well drinks are $5.

The Sunset Restaurant, 6800 Westward Beach Road, Malibu, (310) 589-1007.

4. Chart House

This is old school dining at its finest. Chart House was around before most of Malibu's celeb-filled hotspots were even thought of. Their happy hour specials have also stood the test of time. From 4:30PM to 6:30PM every Monday through Friday, you can indulge in $4 wines by the glass and domestic beers. A selection of specialty martinis and margaritas are $5 and $6.

Their appetizers are quite generous for a happy hour menu in Malibu. Feast on calamari, ahi tuna nachos and firecracker shrimp for $5. Hearty prime rib sliders piled with caramelized onions, melted Monterey Jack cheese and horseradish are a steal at $6. All of this and an unobstructed view of the Pacific ocean make Chart House a fun and romantic happy hour restaurant where you can eat and then take a stroll on the beach to work off those fish tacos.

Chart House, 18412 Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu, (310) 454-9321.

5. Charlie's

If you're looking for a great happy hour in Malibu as well as a chic spot to spend the evening, this is the best of both worlds. Charlie's mixes the laid-back, relaxed beach style with the fashionable, trendy sophistication that is Malibu. The owner, Charlie DiLorenzo, has an eye for food and fashion. Take note of her exquisite taste in interiors as her dining chairs are leopard printed and stamped with a gold plate that reads Dolce & Gabbana.

Charlie's happy hour takes a large leap forward by offering discounted drinks and a happy hour menu every night of the week from 5pm to 7pm. Yes, this includes Saturday and Sunday. Happy hour specials on drinks include $4 for pints and $8 for their house Chardonnay and Merlot. Try the $8 cocktails - the bartender's choice for the night. Their $10 nibbles are from the lounge bar menu and include pizza, sliders, and stuffed jalapenos.

Charlie's, 22821 Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu, (310) 456-3132.
