Man Convicted for Real 'Snakes on a Plane'

A notorious wildlife smuggler, known as the "Lizard King," has been sentenced to six months in prison in Malaysia after being nabbed smuggling 95 live boa constrictors in his luggage.

Anson Wong, 52, a Malaysian national, pleased guilty to wildlife smuggling, and was also fined about $60,000.

The live snakes were discovered at the airport in Kuala Lumpur when Wong's carry-on bag busted open on a luggage conveyor belt.

Wong had flown from Penang to Kuala Lumpur with the bag full of snakes – there were also two viper snakes and a turtle – and was connecting to a flight to Indonesia when he was caught.

Officials are investigating how Wong was able to get the snakes on the first flight.

Meanwhile, Malaysian prosecutors are appealing the sentence handed down this week, saying Wong should get a stiffer penalty to dissuade other would-be wildlife traffickers. The maximum jail term is seven years.

"We are disappointed. The sentence is too lenient for someone who is smuggling out protected species," prosecutor Abdul Majid Hamzah, told The Associated Press. "We cannot take this lightly as it reflects very badly on Malaysia."

Wong previously served jail time for wildlife trafficking of reptiles in the U.S., authorities say.

Illegally importing these HUGE reptiles is a terrible thing to do. People buy them up and treasure them until they get too large to control...especially in Florida. Then, out to the 'glades they go. They've taken over the natural species there and are a threat to not only the natural species, but humans as well. Have you seen the photo of the gigantic snake either eating or being eaten by a croc or aligator? The sanke was so huge it burst out the side of the croc (or whatever). It was seen from a helo that was able to land on water and several photos were taken...VERY NASTY STUFF!! OK all you "Gross lovers", jump on the 'net and check it out...This is what happens when an imported "pet" grows to 20-25' and is no longer desireable to reside in a house. If they have "Safe Havens" for dropping off babies who aren't wanted by their birth mothers annonymously, why not one for snakes and other reptiles?

Why the big deal abour grammer? Everybody seems to know what the writer meant and providing information about the subject is the real goal of any writer.

Its Freudian. People who collect snakes have a phallus fixation. And no friends.

as a kid growing up in seattle washington, found a small garter snake that had a good sized cut in his side, i guess from the lawn mower. we feed him meal worms (they sold them for fishing). you could tell he knew we were helping, didn't bite anyone, stayed around for awhile. sad that so many people don't realize animals have feelings, most are smarter than we think........

ONLY seven years????????? He should get longer. WE are having big problems with species that are brought in ilegally and get out into the wild. Look at Florida and other states that are having a big problem with Boa constrictors. THis is not a simple crime this could effect and entire eco system and the people that live there. They should make an example of him by giving him at least ten years in prison.
