Happy hour in St. Louis isn't just a time of day or an excuse for cocktails in a local bar: it's an institution. Home of the world-famous Anheuser-Busch Brewery, as well as microbrewery powerhouse Schlafly, the city has long had a strong alcohol pedigree. So prepare yourself before heading out to explore St. Louis' lounge bars and happy hour restaurants. Here are six favorite spots for happy hour in St. Louis.

Chimichanga Mexican Restaurant

The brightly colored exterior of Chimichanga's is as quirky as its name and may seem out of place to a visitor. But this Tex-Mex staple fits perfectly into the vibrant South Grand corridor of St. Louis' lounge bars and happy hour restaurants. Chimi's, as it is affectionately known, churns out great Tex-Mex classics, and on Monday nights the joint loads up for one of St. Louis' happy hour steals: $.99 tacos and $1.50 margaritas until closing time. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays, the happy hour menu offers $2 bottles of domestic beer and margaritas. On summer nights, head out to the patio where you can clear your head in the fresh air or pick another one of the happy hour specials from the full outdoor bar.

Happy hour menu: Mon-Wed 11AM-10PM.
Best deals: $.99 tacos and $1.50 margaritas on Mondays

BARcelona Tapas Restaurant

During happy hour in St. Louis, locals with any sort of Hispanic connection flock to this suburban tapas bar. The cost of ordering lots of small plates can add up, so take advantage of happy hour specials such as $2 calamari, burgers and slider plates. You can wash all this down with half-price sangria pitchers, selected cocktails, and domestic and Corona bottled beers.

Note: the happy hour menu is only offered on the bar side of the restaurant, so make sure you're sitting there to get the specials. And be prepared to get friendly with your fellow diners and drinkers: this is one of the most popular local bars in St. Louis.

Happy hour menu: Mon-Fri 4PM-7PM.
Best deals: Half-price sangria pitchers and $2 calamari, burgers and sliders

Modesto Tapas Bar and Restaurant

Modesto is a well-known St. Louis local bar located in an historic Italian neighborhood known as The Hill. But step inside and the atmosphere transforms into something like a Spanish fiesta. Like its suburban sibling BARcelona, Modesto's menu is full of delicious small plates, such as "Ostra Frita" (fried oyster with chimichurri) and "Albóndiga" (a typical veal and pork meatball). These two dishes, along with many others, form part of the bar's happy hour menu and range in price from $.25 to $1.50. You can also get great happy hour specials on drinks including sangria (of course) and Spanish bottled beers. On Tuesday nights this can be one of the busiest local bars in St. Louis, since the happy hour menu is available all night.

Happy hour menu: Mon, Wed-Fri 5PM-7PM; Tue 5PM-close.
Best deal: Tapas starting at $.25
