5 Best Photo Opportunities in Omaha
Lee Van Grack
1. The Romantic Photo: The Old Market District
During the Christmas season, the entire Old Market District of Omaha is lit up with Christmas lights, and very often enhanced by freshly fallen snow. If you're making a trip to the Old Market, you can reserve a horse-drawn carriage ride for two around the district. Reserve these rides with M & J Carriage Service and get ready to shoot photos until your memory card (or battery) runs out. My husband and I took a carriage ride like this to celebrate our engagement and it is a beautiful and romantic way to spend an evening.
The Old Market is located in the heart of Omaha, between 10th and 14th streets, and bordered by Leavenworth Street to the south and Farnum Street to the north. It is filled with art galleries, shops and restaurants and boasts a lively nightlife.
2. The Quirky Photo: Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo
The best quirky spot for photos in town would be at Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo. They have gorilla statues and large lion statues that make perfect backdrops for family shots. In fact, there are multiple places at the zoo where you can take a funny family photo. The rain forest has vines, bridges and waterfalls; it's a fantastic place for families to take fun and funny photos. The zoo is one of the best in the country, with its desert dome, the rain forest, the butterfly menagerie and the skyfari, where you take a chairlift over the safari section of the zoo. That's another place where photo ops are plentiful!
Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo is at 3701 S. 10th Street, just off the I-80 freeway. Entrance to the zoo is $11.50 for adults and $7.75 for children. The zoo is open year-round expect for Thanksgiving and Christmas day.
3. The Family Fun Photo: Omaha Children's Museum
At the Omaha Children's Museum, your kids will find plenty to see and do, and you'll delight in the photo opportunities that abound as they learn and play at the same time. There is a creative arts center where your kids can dress up and put on stage performances, and the "Imagination Playground" area where kids ages 0 to 5 can roam through a series of play areas including a pretend farm and a funny firehouse. There's even Sandy's Splish Splash Garden, where kids can get wet on those hot summer days. This is a great fun activity center filled with great family photo ops.
The Omaha Children's Museum is $8 for adults and kids alike and is open year-round except for Mondays and most holidays. The museum is located at 500 S. 20th Street.
4. The Scenic Photo: Lauritzen Gardens
The beautiful botanical garden Lauritzen Gardens provides yet another amazing photo opportunity in Omaha. Going in early spring, before summer hits and it is too hot to spend hours outside, is the best time to visit. The gardens here not only teem with gorgeous flowers of all types but also have a model railroad, where you can see trains chugging along throughout the day. There are ongoing exhibits as well as special events all year round, and there is a children's garden where kids can work hands-on in the dirt. This place is beautiful during the day and even better at sunset and is worth visiting to get a few beautiful photos.
Open all year round, the Lauritzen Gardens are located just off I-80 North at 100 Bancroft Street.
5. The Classic Photo: The NCAA Men's College World Series
A classic thing to do in Omaha for fantastic photo opportunities is the NCAA Men's College World Series. You would have to plan your trip strategically to be in Omaha while the College World Series is going on, but it is absolutely worth it to make the trip. The series is held annually (since 1950) every June at Johnny Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, which in and of itself is a classic Omaha location, but visiting during the College World Series is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that you can only have in Nebraska. Be sure to shoot a photo in front of the Road to the Omaha sculpture by artist John Lajba; even if you've never played baseball, it's a classic shot.
The "Blatt" is at 1202 Bert Murphy Avenue.
