Call it an expensive kiss. The doctoral student who breached security at Newark Liberty Airport in order to kiss his girlfriend goodbye, forcing the shut down of a terminal, has been fined by federal authorities.

The amount of the civil penalty was not disclosed.

The incident occurred January 3, when Haisong Jiang ducked under a rope at the airport and entered a restricted area because he wanted one more opportunity to lock lips with his girlfriend, who was heading to California.

As a result of the security breach, a terminal at Newark was shut down for six hours.

Jiang, who is from China, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge in March, and was also fined $658 by local authorities, in addition to having to serve 100 hours of community service.

According to the Transportation Security Administration, the federal fine ends the case against the Rutgers University student.

It is ridicules to shut down a terminal and/or airport when the guards can see what has happened and has the event in continuous visual sight. Such action is foolish and stupid. They had him in sight from the time he crossed the line until he connected with his girl friend. They could see he caused no danger to safety. I am a professional airline pilot with over thirty five years experience with a major carrier. I quite often see government security go way beyond what is necessary for the safety of our terminals. Common sense should be used both by those that set up the procedures and those that are involved.

If there is a terrorist threat, we must cavity search all the Iowa grandmothers and wave hello to the bearded men wearing heavy jackets in 110* heat. Homeland Security is a very poor joke. I say electrocute the guy and send his girlfriend to the Iran/Iraq border; at least that makes more sense than the idiotic twits who pulled off this silly theatre of fools.

It's time we stopped coddling these jerks . Everyone knows you don't break security at an Airport or anywhere else . He should have been put in prison by multiplying the number of people/passangers he inconvenienced times the number of hours they were inconvenienced . So 1000 people X 6 hours = 6000 hours . Even an idiot would have to stop and think . If you were one of the people/passangers inconvenienced by this jerk , you'd feel the same way .

In an earlier news item this morning, a young woman on a flight actually spit on a flight attendant and hit another before they could restrain her. The flight had to be diverted so they could remove this person from the flight but no charges were pressed against her. She should have had a large fine and community service as she actually caused a flight to be diverted She got nothing!

The last time I went through airport "security," I was horrified at how willingly Americans have come to accept practices that should have ceased at the fall of Nazi Germany.

It seems to me they are just trying to recoup the money they spent to bash that guy. Man what the government won't do these days.
