Delta Air Lines has launched what it says is the industry's first social media "Ticket Window," allowing passengers to book directly from Facebook.

While many carriers use Facebook and Twitter to promote deals, Delta users can now complete a full travel booking on Facebook without having to navigate to the airline's website.

Delta says it plans to expand the Ticket Window to other sites including online banner ads, from which customers could do direct bookings.

The airline also launched a redesigned website and homepage, in what it says is a continued effort to interact directly with customers on the Web.

"Our customers are spending more time online and are looking for new ways to connect with us," says Bob Kupbens, Delta's vice president – eCommerce. "We are now delivering technology where our customers are – from our own website to our Facebook page to Internet news sites and beyond."

The carrier says in the coming weeks it also plans to launch a new iPhone application.
